If you registered your computer after June 11th, you were entitled to a free upgrade to Mountain Lion. See http://www.apple.com/osx/uptodate/.
If you went ahead an purchased ML before recieving your redemption code then you're just out $20. Not a big deal - you should have been instructed on how to get a redemption code for the OS X update.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Apple MacBook Air 11 inch, 13 inch, or Dell XPS 14 with i7 and nvidia graphics card?

I am a college student looking for either a MacBook Air 11 inch or a MacBook Air 13 inch. I was looking at the Dell XPS 14 with i7 processor and nvidia graphics card. It is similar in price to an Apple MacBook Air 11 inch. I will mainly use the laptop for browsing, a bit of Minecraft, watching videos (netflix/downloading movies), presentations, and documents. I would also need it to be lightweight because I will be carrying it around campus. I cannot choose between these three.....any ideas? I have an iPhone 5 and iPad with retina display (that is what I use currently and it is not working out). I just saw the WWDC14 and I saw how all my devices could connect to the Mac flawlessly.
    Please let me know,
    Thanks

I recommend the macbook 13" retina. Yes, it is expensive, but if you pair it with 8GB of memory, you should be futureproof for the next 5 years minimum. Why not the air.
Currently the air sports thunderbolt 1, This is super outdated. Macbook pro has thunderbolt 2 which allows you to daisy chain monitors via display port 1.2. Macbook Air sports display port 1.1a which only allows daisy chaining amoungst thunderbolt monitors which are expensive. $1000 minimum per a monitor where as you could pickup a daisy chainable displayport 1.2 dell monitor for $200. The only reason I am severely regretting my 13" Air.
The screen, yes, in a few years all screens will sport retina resolutions. It makes a big difference when reading and typing for long periods of time. Text is more clear. Also, 11" is way too small. If you want something that small, get an Ipad Air.
Battery life, 9 hours should still be enough to get you through the day. I go to school and I could only top out at 7 hours usage at most.
Gaming, Although I dont recommend gaming on any laptop because laptops aren't meant so much for gaming. Mostly because the heat generated from it kills the life of your laptop. It is up to 20% faster than the air.
Weight, half a pound off the 13" AIR is not a big deal. Actually the retina is smaller in height and width, so better center of balance when using it on your lap and the black bezel is less distracting.
Processor, its 10% faster in overall processing speeds generally.
Dont forget to purchase 2 year extended warranty. Buy that from bhphoto for 180 bucks. No tax and its way cheaper than apple.
If you still want the air after that, consider getting the 13". It comes with sd card slot, it is handy when you run out of space. And its 10% faster than the 11" even though they have the same processor. The processor's performance is based on the thermal threshold of the computer. The hotter it gets, the slower the computer gets to cool the processor down.
If you choose the Macbook Pro 13" RETINA(Not the $999 version with the DVD Drive), if you can, wait till late october when they update the computer with better hardware. Well... if you can.

  • HT1338 Can I use windows xp on OS x mountain Lion?

Can I install Windows XP on OS X Mountain Lion?

Installing WinXP on Lion or above without BootCamp
It is possible to install WinXP onto Lion or Mountain Lion.  Bootcamp does not work thanks to Apple removing support, but the important drivers you need can be found on the net (details below – but the drivers you need will depend on your hardware). WinXP when installed will display at a low resolution on your screen but with the drivers you can fix that and get Wifi connectivity.
When I did it, by far the most time consuming part was to get my XP upgraded to SP3.  The solution to one nasty problem with SP3 upgrade is given below.
    PREPARATION
Obtain the following files using your browser in OSX before attempting WinXP install.
    1.  Service Pack 3 file (if your WinXP is Service Pack 2).  Obtain from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24
If the file has moved to a different page search on Microsoft's site for it.
(Note: I downloaded the SP3 driver written as a CD disk ISO image and used the FreeISOBurner software to make a CD from which I could make the install.)
    2.  Search and find drivers for the Intel graphics of your Macbook Pro
(search for  'Intel® HD Graphics Driver for Windows XP')
    3.  Find drivers for WIFI.  Mid 2011 MBP uses Broadcom. BCM43xx
    Wiki drivers site has them.
    4.  Make sure you have Win XP installation CD and the 25 character licence key.
Give yourself some time without too many urgent deadlines etc.
    PART A
Partition your hard disk in OSX using Disk Utility.  One should be FAT32 format and set to your size needs for Windows XP.
Restart computer and hold down C key to boot from Windows XP installation CD
Install WinXP following instructions.  At least one restart required.  Hold down option key when power is down to select the windows drive for booting
Once finished WinXP set up, restart and boot into OSX pressing and holding the option key when power is down.
    PART B
From OSX, open a finder window and locate the Windows drive
Open the folder 'Windows Drive'\Documents and Settings\'Your windows account name'\Desktop
Transfer the files you will need from your OSX into the Windows desktop
    Service pack 3
    Intel Graphics Drivers
    Wifi Drivers
(Note.  This is where it helps to use FAT32 format for Windows.  If you choose to format using NTFS when installing Windows then OSX can read but not write to that drive.  If you use NTFS you will need to transer the files to FAT32 formatted memory stick or CD)
    PART C
Reboot the computer into Win XP by holding down option key when restarting
Install the Intel graphics drivers.  Reboot to XP
Install the Wifi drivers.  Reboot to XP
Have a go at bringing your XP up to date.  This can be a long task depending on which version of installation disk you own: XP, XP with SP1, XP with SP2 or XP with SP3.  In my case I started from XP SP2.  Unfortunately the Windows Update mechanism in the XP SP2 system is now blocked by Microsoft so you can't update using the web.  This is where you need the SP3 installation.
    There are many possible headaches:
One error message is 'Setup requires a minimum of 4 additional megabytes of free space' when running the SP3 installation.  If this is the case then go to this page:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-windows_update/er ror-there-is-not-enough-disk-space-on/3109444d-2249-4e66-973c-bd662635dc77
It appears that the BootDir register is not set during some installations (mine included).  Follow the clear instructions from David Mitchell to fix the registers (Thanks David!)
    PART D
Once you have Win XP SP3 going then you're Wifi should work and you should be able to complete the update process using the Windows update mechanism.  You can then find other drivers you may need such as LAN drivers etc.

  • HT1338 can a mac 10.5.8 upgrade to mountain lion

can a mac 10.5.8 upgrade to mountain lion?

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
OS 10.6 Snow Leopard is once again available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

  • Can't update software because Macbook Air won't restart properly

I own a late 2010 Macbook Air and have recently bought OS X Mountain Lion.
After going through steps to update the most recent version of OS X Mountain Lion, I find that my mac fails to startup properly and beeps once
before taking several attemps to restart. When it eventually does, the software doesn't update.
Other updates install without a problem, it's just when they require restarting.
Please explain small details as I have little knowledge when it comes to this topic.

  • HT1338 Can i get siri on macbook air ?

    Hi
I recently purchased  OIs Lion Version 10.8  €17.99 very slow to download said errors . The only reAson i bought it was to get SIRI on my Macbook air. I need somthing like noteability on my mac so i can dictate and it will type/text and read aload back to me. Any ideas please? My i phone 4 will not support it, any help appreciated.

Siri only runs on an iPhone, not a Mac. You will need an iPhone 4S or later for Siri.
There is a work around that includes enhanced voice search  >   https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google-search/id284815942?mt=8
And check out Dragon Dictation for iPhone  > https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google-search/id284815942?mt=8
If your Mac is running slow, check to see how much free space there is on the startup disk.
Click the Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About this Mac > More Info > System Report then select Storage on the left under Hardware.
You'll see Available and Capacity. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

  • Can I buy a new MacBook Air and install Lion 10.7?

I am about to buy a new MacBook Air 13" and want to install Lion 10.7 on it.  This is for a particular reason related to some of my apps being fine with Lion but not yet updated for 10.8.
So can I buy a MacBook Air which has 10.8 installed, and then erase te drive and install 10.7.4 from a DVD (which I already have here)?
    Thanks.

You possibly have an option. If you are wanting to buy a "stock" model, as opposed to a "build to order" model, then you might be able to find a MacBook Air at a retailer, like Best Buy", who may have older stock with Lion installed. I'm not sure how long a retailer might have old stock. I suppose it depends on their policies and turnover. Any that are in stock are elligible for a free Mountain Lion upgrade, such that you would have the ability to run either, at your discretion.
Once I got my new MBA, one ofthe very first things I did was to create a clone backup. That way, I could more easily revert if ever I wanted to.

  • Wifi Problems [Macbook air 2012 Mountain Lion]

I have a new (barely 2 weeks old) Macbook Air fresh from Shanghai.  It is running the most current OSX 10.8.2 with the newest update.  All apps are up to date.  It has 8gb ram and a core i7 processor.
The wifi is extremely slow (I am seeing rates from a couple kb to maybe 100kb/s).  The wifi icon in the upper bar displays full strength for my home wifi (WPA2 secured running N-band).  However, if I go more than a 10 feet from the router the signal appears to drop off dramatically (speeds become lethargic, nearly 0kb/s) although the icon still displays full strenth.  The only way I can get half-decent speeds is by physically sitting in my closet with the router.  Clearly, this is not ideal and hopefully is not the norm for a brand new system like this that is meant to be an ultraportable.
Another symptom I have noted is that when the macbook is connected to the network, the speed of all other wifi-connected devices also drops off - though not as dramatically.
The wifi connection problem appears to be not just with my home network as it is also unbearable with any wifi network I've tried EXCEPT the apple store (so of course the apple genius wasn't convinced).
I have tried many things to fix this including:
    bluetooth is turned off
    no other devices are connected
    reset router
reset wifi setting on computer and turn on/off
    reseting NVRAM
changing network (I have tried 2 home networks, starbucks, a portable hotspot, and my school's wifi)
So far, as I mentioned before, the only way to get above 20 kb/s is to sit inside my closet.  This network works perfectly with 3+ other computers and any cell phones/printers/etc that have been hooked up to it, many of which are many rooms/walls away.  Also, even sitting next to the router, speeds are still 10x slower than other devices.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!

         O
I had the excact same issue, I have now restored to OSX 10.8.1 rather than update to 10.8.2? downside is I cannot use iPhoto because it requires 10.8.2 to install
Strange thing is when i updated to 10.8.2 and logged in as a guest user i had no internet problems, but as soon as I switched back to my account login the wifi issues came back?
I even spent 2 hours on the phone to my internet service provider thinking it was my router giving up.
It was only through luck that i picked up on the fact that it didnt cause issues before i updated, but only after the update did the issue raise its head.
Im a loyal apple user,  I also sell apple products through a reseller bar inside the store I work, but im starting to loose faith.
Lets hope this is a bigger issue than just a handful of users, that way apple may get a fix out for this
