HT1338 Im trying to update to current OSX currently installed is 10.6.8

I seem to have migrated an old OS onto my laptop and am now trying to update the operating system. How do I get to the OSX mountain lion from the 10.6.8 version currently installed. sort of  techno-challenged

Where my picture says "Download" you will see a price to buy Mountain Lion. Click on that button and enter your AppleID password to purchase Mountain Lion. It will then download into your Applications folder. It is about 4GB, so it may take some time.
Given that you are self-admittedly "techno-challenged," do you know that some of your programs will not work with Mountain Lion, even though they work just fine with Snow Leopard?

Either try redownloading or try downloading the standalone updater: OS X Lion Update 10.7.4 (Client Combo).
Such errors may be caused by glitches in your Internet connection or because of hard drive problems. I suggest you try the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Reset your iPad by holding the home and on/off buttons together for 6 or 7 seconds till the Apple logo appears.  Then update your apps one at a time.  Do not start the next app until the current one downloads and finishes installing.

There are many people suffering from this problem right now (including me). It appears to be a server issue. Just wait and try checking for updates again tomorrow.
Some things I have heard indicate that this may be a regional problem, though what parts of the world are affected I don't know yet. A few people have been helped by deleting the following preference file (paste the path into the Go -> Go to Folder window in the Finder to locate it), though most have not:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
Note that if you are trying to download iTunes 10.7, that can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576
Also, note that there is no reason to be anxious to get it, as the only thing added in iTunes 10.7 is compatibility with iOS 6, which will not be available until the 19th, and the new iPhone, which will not be available until later as well. The new iTunes that was announced is iTunes 11, which is also not yet available.

I have found other threads with this problem. The problem is that you are using your iTunes account on another user at the same time you want to update software. Just close iTunes from that user. See > https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4577180?start=0&tstart=0

im trying to update my software from 10.4.11 but its not letting me. what should i do?

You are at the max version of Tiger OS 10.4.11. There are no additional updates.
If you want to go to a higher version of Mac OS X, that's an upgrade, that requires a purchase.

  • I Have mac osx 10.5.8 and have tried to update to mac osx snow leopard 10.6.3, but I constantly get the install failed message. What could be the problem?

My imac is currently running mac os x 10.5.8. I've tried to install mac osx snow leopard 10.6.3, but have been unsuccesful because the disc fails to install.
    What could be the problem?

You should boot from the Installer DVD by holding down the C key during start up until the Apple logo and spinning cog wheel appears. Allow plenty of time for the installer to appear - it can take several minutes when booting from a disc.
I suggest not doing this unless the Apple recommended method (starting by double-clicking on the
Install Mac OS X icon while booted up normally) fails.
There are several reasons for this:
The Apple method performs a check of the DVD's integrity before starting up from it. This can't be done if you start up directly from the DVD.
The Apple method "phones home" using the current OS's network settings to check for updates to the incompatible items database included on the DVD & writes a lot of pre-install data (the 'Mac OS X Install Data' stuff) to the HD before restarting automatically from the DVD to finish the installation. This may not work as expected if you start up directly from the DVD.
The pre-install data on the HD speeds up the installation process (because running the OS from the HD to build the data is faster than doing that while running from a DVD).
The Apple method makes it possible to "gracefully" cancel the installation before the automatic restart occurs without leaving the existing OS on the HD in a corrupted, "half-installed" state unable to restart the Mac. This sometimes happens if the installation process hangs & one has to force-restart the Mac to recover. As long as this occurs during the "pre-install phase" before the restart, the existing OS should remain untouched & intact.
Also note that the Snow Leopard installer is quite a bit more sophisticated than the previous ones like for Leopard or Tiger. It automatically performs the equivalent of Disk Utility's Verify Disk step before beginning the installation & performs more checks during the installation process (including checking the pre-install data for errors). It is usually not necessary to remove the "Mac OS X Install Data" folder after a failed installation, which may just cause the process to take longer on subsequent attempts, but if nothing else helps it is certainly something worth trying.

  • HT1338 When trying to update,

I get to the Security and can't get past. I keep getting error in the Name and Password window. I tried Apple ID name and the password for my account. Is there a different Name and Password I need for the Updates?

I finally figured it out. Yes it was the admin account. I realized that I have set it up with no password so NO need for a password in that window; just click OK and proceed. Sometimes the old brain gets mixed up with all the passwords and pin numbers.
    thx anyway

  • HT1338 10.6.8 updates download but won't install

I run OSX 10.6.8 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 MacbookPro 8,1 and for the life of me I cannot get the 14+ software updates to install.
The technology should be invisible, that's the whole reason I abandoned Windows for Mac (so I could just do things and be insulated from technical b.s. I'm not qualified to troubleshoot in the first place.)
There are as I said at least 14 discrete software updates available according to Software Update. Everyone of them has been downloaded, and demands a restart post-install.
Yet when I click "Install 14 items" the computer throws a Macbook Pro EFI Firmware Update in my face, prompts me to reboot, and thus the loop completes and repeats.
    Any suggestions please?
p.s. - Yes, I've run the disk utility and verified and repaired the disk permissions as well as verified the disk itself.
I'm at wit's end. Any help is appreciated.

First off, I would never install all 14 at once, especially since restarts are required. Tedious as it may be, I would install them one by one. Running all of them at once will make your computer choke on them and probably make a big mess.
Do you really need all 14? Just because SU offers them, doesn't mean you have to get them all. And just because it looks like Apple is making it possible to install all 14 in a row, doesn't mean that's a good idea. In fact it's rather crazy.
And, it seems you need the firmware update to proceed. So why not get that done. Just be sure there's no likelihood of a power interruption. Run the MBP from the AC adaptor or be sure the battery is in excellent shape.
Personally, I never run updates from software update. I only use it to see what's needed and then I get the standalones from Apple downloads. I also run "serious" updates booted in Safe Mode. Less chance of a conflict with some third party item.

  • I am trying to update my ipad 2 and saying error with back up, if I continue I will lose all content. What do I do?

Does anybody know what I can do to update my ipad without losing all my data. I am trying to update my current version to the 5.1 version and it keeps giving a error message stating that "an error has occured with the back up and if I continue I will lose all content. Will I be able to get my stuff back such as games, music, aps, etc back after I finish or will they be lost forever. Can somebody please help me I am lost and not sure where to get support on this issue.
    Thank you so much
    Alicia

If you continue and you lose everything, you will be able to download most of the content again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID. You can read this about downloading past purchases.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
But before you continue and lose everything, try this.
Eject your iPad, quit iTunes and restart your computer. Then launch iTunes and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices. See if you have mutliple iPad backups showing in there. If you have multiple backups, delete all but one of them. Also check the box at the bottom that turns off auto sync .... Prevent iPods ......Click OK and Then quit iTunes.
Connect the iPad again and launch iTunes. Right click on your iPad name on the left side of iTunes and select backup. See if the iTunes will create a backup. If it does, after it finishes, click on the Summary Pane on the right and click on check for update. Try to update again.
If it all goes OK, after you update the iOS you can back to Edit>Preferences>Devices and turn on atuo sync again - assuming that is how you want to sync.

  • I am trying to update my macbook from osx10.6.8 to the free update but it says it can't update my computer even though it fits the standards. Any one have this problem?

I am trying to update my macbook osx 10.6.8 to the free update and it says it cant update it. Anyone else have this problem and if so have you found a solution?

The point in reference, regarding an offer of something 'free' could be any kind of upgrade to software, a newer version of browser, an adobe flash player, a supported version of OS X from the Mac App Store, etc. With an Apple ID one can access the online stores from OS X 10.6.8.
So, one has to be specific, and also detail the computer configuration and specifications so as to help confirm what kind(s) of upgrade may actually work with the hardware vintage of the computer. The Model number, build series year, is it an Early, Mid, or Late (year) model?
These factor in hardware differences and what kinds of OS X version or other software may or may not work in the computer. Also, an upgrade of RAM may be needed for some software upgrade or system upgrade, to work correctly. While your computer may be unable to upgrade to Mavericks 10.9.2.
If too old, it may do OK with Mountain Lion 10.8.5, or maybe Lion 10.7.5. Some users with an older Mac prefer 10.6.8 if it works well and they have applications that run on there; older applications may not run on Mavericks 10.9.2... Or maybe the Mac won't like it. Make a backup before upgrades.

  • Trying to update "Pages" from App Store. An old email address shows up and am unable to delete.

I am able to purchase a new app from Apple App store using my current email address and password. I am not able to update a previously purchased app (for instance "Pages") that I purchased some time ago when I had a different email address. When I try to update Pages a "grey out"  edition of my old email address is sitting in the id box and I am not able to delete it or get it out of the box and use my newer (2 years) email address. I have even tried to update my current email address with a new password which has absolutely no effect when I try to update Pages. Anyboday have an idea on how to get the old email address out of the id box?

Delete Pages and then download it from the desired Apple ID. This may require repurchasing it.
