HT1386 Questions on syncing Iphone to Itunes. It erased my contacts! Help!

My daughter tried to sync her new 8gb Iphone 4 to Itunes but there was too much data and somehow it erased all of her contacts and text messages. And installed zero music. We tried to restore it back but it was not successfull. Can anyone help with this problem and let us know how to get back her contacts?

when you're in itunes, select the name of your phone. then, choose 'info' from the top options like summary, info, apps, etc. here, uncheck syncing of your mail and probably contacts, then apply in the bottom right corner
now your computer will no longer give your phone that information when you plug it in
you can also disable autosync for good measure, so your phone doesn't just automatically sync everytime you plug it in
edit > preferences > devices > check the box next to 'prevent ipads, iphones, and ipods from syncing automatically' then click 'ok'

Hard drive crashed and had to replace drive and logic board on my MacBook pro. After Install tried to sync with my iPhone and a dialog box pops up stating "this iPhone synced with another iTunes library, erase and sync?". I checked the manually manage music and videos box because I don't want all my wife's pics and music on my iPhone. How do I Sync without erasing what I have on my iPhone???

Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?

What is selected under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes?
If you have chosen selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres - if Pulp Fiction is available under the Albums section to be selected as an Album to be transferred to your iPhone, is it selected?
If so, when you select Albums via the iPod on your iPhone, the album is not available there to select?
You can always create an iTunes playlist with these songs placing the songs in your preferred order.

You need to do as provided. If no change after restoring as a new iPhone or not from the backup, the iPhone has a hardware problem.

Hi Steve, Thanks for that. When I conect the phone it comes up with iphoto and starts to sync and then when that is finnished the itunes window shows my phone syncing at the top of the screen. The only button that says iphone which is on top right only asks if I want to eject and then disapears when sync finnishes. I can not see any other way of showing a side bar view and i can not access any way of controling the sycn service. It seems to be syncing calander but not my contacts. Have I missed something?

Are you the original owner of this phone? If so sign in with the Apple ID and password you used when you first set it up.
Or did you buy is phone used? Contact the person you bought it from and have him/her correct the problem or refund your money.
You have encountered activation Lock that prevents stolen or lost phones from being activated. As stated the only way around this problem is to have the original owner clear the phone for your use.

The warning is correct, take it seriously. If you have a new computer, you need to transfer the iPhone files to it from your old computer. See these links:

I have been through the recent responses to the question about how to sync; I'm not computer literate and I got hung up on the first step: how do you connect the iPad to iTunes to start the process? If I can understand this, I will try to follow the steps suggested and use the "transfer" feature and hope for the best. Also, If there is a site where the syncing procedure is discussed step by step, I would appreciate it.

Apple doesn't support WiFi syncing at this time - why? Send Steve an email and perhaps he'll tell you. (Unless he's too busy answering stupid questions about the iPhone 4 antenna.) Seriously? None of us knows why but I'd guess that among other things, Apple hasn't gotten WiFi syncing perfected to the point where it is a) easy for even noobs, b) reliable, c) secure, and d) doesn't corrupt the iPad if syncing fails
Seriously - look at all the questions and problems people have with syncing. Then look at all the questions and problems people have with WiFi. Combine, shake and "oh no"!
