HT1414 How can I get my contacts back after update 5.1.1? I've tried everything

After updating my Iphone 4 to the 5.1.1 version all my contacts are now gone. Ive tried restore and all the tricks everyone suggests. What else can I do?

Not a good idea to depend on an iPhone or any cell phone alone for such important data as contacts.
Contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book app on your computer.
Contacts can also be synced over the air with an email account that supports this, and there are a number of free accounts that do including an Apple iCloud account, a Gmail account, a Yahoo account, and a Hotmail account. If you have tried all the tricks everyone suggests and your contacts are not available anywhere else, they are gone.

You can restore the phone and when prompted to restore choose from icloud account. BUT MAKE SURE there is 1.) an icloud backup for your phone. 2.) you are using the same apple id.

Tried updating my phone. Got the same error everyone else has. And before some smart aleck asks, no I haven't hacked my phone at all. Just contacts and songs have been added.
Got the error, and had to restore. Now everything's gone. Pictures, contacts, everything. Please tell me there's a way to get it back. Most of those contacts weren't in my Outlook. And my old phone's been recycled so I can't get the info off that either.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound like a smart-you know what, but what in the world were you thinking of updating the iPhone with no backup? At the very least having your contacts on your desktop program (Outlook) would be a good backup. If I read your post correctly, you manually entered your contact information on your iPhone, you have no copy of that data anywhere else, and completely wiped out your iPhone with a restore.
If I understood the situation correctly, then no, there is no way to get your contacts back.
I would highly recommend you enter them on the computer, not the iPhone. Sync them over to the iPhone, making the iPhone the SECOND place where you have all your contacts.

What do you mean by " Restore " hee ? Do you mean you wiped your device ?
By default all of our Contacts or Address book is stored in our device memory ! If you have a previous backup of your device or used BlackBerry Protect then you can restore it from there .
So can you confirm if have any such backups ? If you don't have it then I doubt you'll ever able to recover those.

May I confirm whether you used iTunes (while the iphone was plugged into the computer) to perform the update, or if the update was performed "wirelessly" through the device's settings?
Regardless, your solution should lie within your last backup (typically performed automatically when the phone is "sync'd" with itunes on the computer).

After upgrading to io6 my contacts have all disapeared. The dropdown menu for restoring to a previose backup only has today's backup. I tried to restore from info page on itunes and didn't work as only backup to restore to was today. My icloud contacts is also empty. I am curently horified. This is the first apple phone i have owned and I am shocked that thios could happen. At no time did I ever click ok when there was a warning that all my contacts will be eresed from everywhere permanently.

TY for the reply - I only have one pc. I checked icloud online via my computer and there are no contacts there. I have tried turning i cloud on and off. I looked in the backup folder for earlier backups and the folder only has today's date in it. My messges are still there but they don't show names anymore - just numbers.

You don't download iTunes by connecting your phone to iTunes and yes of course, by syncing your phone with your husbands computer, of course you will have lost all your stuff and you will have his.
When you connect to iTunes, you sync.
To get back all your things, then you need to sync your phone to the computer that you used originally to set your phone up - if this is your computer, then connect your phone to that and sync it with iTunes on that and you will get your stuff back, but when you connect to iTunes you sync and don't download.
Ringtones should download automatically to your phone and if not, if you are getting them on your computer, then download them to your computer with your iTunes on and double click to get the MP3 file to open in iTunes and then sync your phone to your computer and you will get the ringtone on your phone.

Do you have copies of them in the Tones section of your computer's iTunes library or on your backup of your downloads/library so that you can sync them back to your phone? If you haven't then you could try contacting iTunes Support and see if they will grant you a redownload
