If you didn't make a back-up of your purchases to restore from then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. I just got a new computer today and I backed up all my songs from old computer onto an external hard drive. When I sent my songs over onto my new computer and freshly downloaded iTunes, the songs that I actually purchased from the iTunes store won't play. It says that the item cannot be located.

More than likely iTunes was set to read the media on the external drive. If this is the case and the drive is not connected when attempting to play music, you will receive these alerts. The other possibly is that iTunes is not directed to where you placed the media on the computer. Here are the best troubleshooting articles that direct you on how to correct this issue.

Can't access any songs after reinstallation of iTunes

Not very good with computers or anything, so please be gentle.
I got stuck with the whole Version 5 bug and had to re-install my iTunes software in order to be able to use it. I got through that okay, but now I have another huge problem.
Every time I try to listen to one of the songs that I bought off at the music store before I had to reinstall iTunes, a message pops up saying that I'm not authorized to play that song on this computer (which seems impossible, as I downloaded the song on this computer in the first place, but you know, whatever). It tells me to log on in order to authorize the playing of the song and when I do, it redirects me to a screen in the Music Store that tells me to "please downoad version 5," which obviously I really do not want to do as that's what screwed up my iTunes in the first place. Then when I try to go back to the song to actually play it, thinking I must have authorized it by now, it tells me the song STILL isn't authorized.
I've tried this with more than one song and none of them work. I've also tried to use the music files I coped for back-up, just in case something went wrong during reinstallation, but those songs won't play either. I could redownload them all but that would be too much money for songs I already paid for in the first place.
Am I doing something wrong, or does Steve Jobs just hate me?
Pleeeeease help. I really, really want my music back. ;(\
Oh, and if it helps the problem any, my Ipod is a mini and my iTunes is version 4.6, I think. Not sure if that information is necessary but I thought I'd mention it anyway.
EDIT: Okay, I checked what Apple actually has to say about this whole authorization thing. IT says the problem is probably that I have too many computers authorized to play the song, but I know that absolutely cannot be the case, as I only use one computer with my iTunes.
Is there a way to check how many computer iTunes thinks the song is registered with? because maybe it thinks there's more then five when there's really only one.

You've probably already got things figured out by now, but since I just saw your post, and the same thing happened to me, I figured I'd tell you how I fixed it just in case. My instructions are kind of long, but I wrote them up for me this way in case it happens again.
1.     If you just authorize again, like it asks you to do, you will probably use up 2 of the 5 authorizations that youre allowed. (Youre only allowed to play your purchased music on 5 computers. If you get a 6th computer, you have to de-authorize one of the others. If you sell your computer, you should de-authorize it first while you still have access to it or you wont be able to.)
2.     Quit out of the error box, without authorizing.
3.     Click on Music Store in your Source column.
4.     Click once on your account name; under the eye, to the right of Account.
5.     A box comes up asking you to enter your password for your apple id.
6.     Enter your password, then click on View Account.
7.     The screen that comes up will tell you how many computers you currently have authorized to play your purchased music.
8.     If it says: Computer Authorizations: One machine is authorized to play music purchased with this account, then something is wrong because it obviously isnt letting your one machine play music.
9.     So, you need to go ahead and de-authorize your machine and reauthorize it to keep it from using up 2 authorizations.
10.     Click on Advanced on the top menu bar of Itunes, and then De-authorize Computer.
11.     Make sure the top radio button is selected, next to De-authorize Computer for Music Store Account.
12.     Click OK.
13.     Then go back and repeat steps 3-7, to look again to see how many computers you have authorized. It should now say 0.
14.     Then, try to play one of your songs that was purchased. You can always click on the Purchased Music link in the Source column to find all of your purchased music.
15.     The same box will come up asking you to authorize your machine. Go ahead and do it now because now it will only cause one computer to be authorized.
16.     You only have to do this on one of your purchased songs. All the rest of the purchased music will work after that.

I emptied trash with itunes in it accidentally and now can't play any songs on itunes what can i do?

so i needed to clear disk space so i could use imovie more, so i put a load of stuff in trash and emptied it, but somehow i stupidly put itunes there too, so now when on itunes i can't play any songs because it keeps asking me to "Locate" it, which i can't do because it doesn't exist anymore arrrggh! i can't use any of my songs on imovie either, it's very frustrating. If there is any way at all that i could recover the songs so i could play them on itunes then that would be great-

If you don't have a back up, you have lost your music.
If you have iTunes Store purchases, you can go into iTunes Store and redownload previous purchases.

I can't import any songs into iTunes.

I can't import any songs into iTunes. I can drag and drop but nothing will happen. Songs show up when a search is done but songs cannot be played or located in iTunes. I think this has something to do with the recent update because I have songs imported into iTunes from December.

I found the problem. I have VMware fusion that is hosting Window XP on the iMac. When the fusion is running the CD player is not seen in OS. By quitting Fusion I can now insert a CD and the disk icon appears on the OS screen. Now I can bring up iTunes and import the audio and continue as before. The one exception is I cannot bring in a photo of the album cover as before I have to drag the photo out of iPhoto and onto the desk top. Then I can drag it into the artwork patch in the iTunes/ info window.

I'm getting really annoyed that i can't purchase any songs as it keeps saying my card has been declined, ive checked and rechecked details, checked balances, everything is fine, and i still have 78p left from my itunes voucher. Does anyone know what to do?

Well, 78p is 1p too short for a track ...
As for the card, have you checked with your bank that it is ok? If it's been declined but you have funds, then either Apple or your bank is at fault - so try the bank first (marginally easier to get in touch with)

Can't import any songs

I can't import any songs to Itunes. The only ones in my playlist are the ones I bought from Itunes store. My IE keeps shuting down and sends a report to Microsoft.

I understand that you are not able to sync a few songs you purchased from iTunes to your iPhone and other devices. There may be an issue with the file, but if you have the Apple ID and password used to purchase the songs, you can redownload them. You can even download the song directly to your iPhone. Can't see any songs/etc on Nano even though iTunes says it has!

I had a problem with my nano today so I followed the instructions on this website for troubleshooting and restored my nano back to factory settings, reinstalled the latest copy of iTunes and then copied songs back onto my nano.
Now whenever I connect my nano, it keeps asking me to register it (which I've already done). Then when I click on Finish, it then automatically 'updates' and according to iTunes it says that it has loads of tunes on it. As soon as I disconnect however, I can't see any songs, playlists etc on my nano.
Another thing is that before disconnecting I tried to change the update setting to manual. After disconnecting and reconnecting however, it's somehow changed it back to automatic.
What's wrong? Can anyone help me please?

Put it into disk mode first:

Then change the drive letter as in the last article.
Once you've done that, eject the iPod and reset it.

Then you can reconnect it, and you should be able to take care of it in iTunes. You just might have to restore it once more, once you get the drive letter changed.
