HT1620 Is this worth doing for a phone I don't use for purchases or online banking?

I don't do online banking or anything financial on my 4S.  Do I need this security?

I suspect you do have financial data and valuable data stored on your phone.  You probably have a contract with it, and probably pay for calls made to certain telephone numbers, for instance.  What happens when your phone starts calling pay-per-call, international, or more SMS or data traffic than you're contracted for?  You then either get to pay for that activity, or you spend time and hassles untangling the bills.
Do you have email addresses, or telephone numbers, or calendar data, or do you have email accounts?   Do you tweet or post to Facebook?  Those activities can be valuable to you, to your contacts, and variously to the authors of malware.
Can your phone be used to delete some or all of your email?   That's going to be annoying, if nothing else.
Is your phone number part of two-factor authentication for a password reset for some other online service, or for authenticating credit card purchases?  That could get expensive.
Please keep your computers current, and your iOS current.  If not for yourself, then for those your phones or your computers can be used to contact.
Thanks!

  • Is this worth doing?

    I am working on a GUI for a CDC platform. I'm wondering about the wisdom of doing the following:
    private int ptr;
    private int syncPtr;
    * Point at the item to be drawn.
    * Happens seldom, called only from AWT thread.
    * @param p pointer to the string to draw
    public void setPtr(int p) {
    ptr = p;
    synchronized (this) { syncPtr = p; }
    * Paint: happens very frequently, called only from AWT thread.
    * @param g graphics context
    public void paint(Graphics g) {
    g.drawString(... model.get(ptr));
    * The model has changed: redraw if necessary.
    * Called from a thread other than AWT.
    * @param idx the index of the changed model element
    public void notifyChanged(int idx) {
    synchronized (this) {
    if (idx != syncPtr) { return; }
    Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getSystemEventQueue().postEvent(
    new Runnable() { public void run() { repaint(); } });
    Right? The common operation, drawing, requires no synchronization (because the variable ptr is accessed only from the AWT thread), but syncPtr obeys the "all access to a variable touched by more than one thread must be synchronized" rule.
    ... and, before you go all off on me, recall that this is CDC: it is quite possible that the JVM will not be Sun's. I have personal experience with slow synchronzation on such platforms: I'm not making that up. I'm also fairly certain that I can't depend on "transient" working at all.
    Thoughts?
    -bmeike

    1) quote: repaint() itself posts an UPDATE event to
    the event queue
    I noticed that too. The reason I did it this way is
    that repaint() examines non-transient member
    variables before it posts the event. I believe
    that, unless I call repaint() by posting an event,
    I'm breaking the single-thread rule. Do you have a
    way to get around that?I'm not a GUI expert. If you need to modify variables and then have the changes repainted, and your changes are in the event thread, then can't you call paint() directly? This would seem a very common thing to do - and something folks in the Swing forums would be better positioned to help with.
    2) quote: Make ptr volatile to ensure it is visible
    to the drawing thread
    I agree, completely, that this is the right approach.
    As I said, in my original posting, though,
    "transient" is buggy in my JVM (as it was in Sun's,
    until 1.4, I believe).Define "buggy". Unless the VM causes incorrect code execution when you declare a field volatile then you should still declare it volatile. Some CDC/CLDC VMs might ignore volatile completely - which would be wrong if they have a JIT that might optimize access to the volatile variable. Most bugs relating to volatile in earlier JDKs relate to multiprocessor visibility/ordering issues which I would not expect to apply in your case.
    Ultimately if you require synchronization for correctness and that synchronization is too slow for you, then you have a dilemma.

  • I had to perform a master reset on my HTC one, before doing so the phone was backed up using the backup assistant app. Now there is no restore button I can find to get my contacts back. How do I restore my contacts?

    I had to perform a Master Reset on my HTC One while trying to work through an issue. This was done with a Verizon rep on the phone and we performed a backup using backup assistant. Now I am not able to restore my contacts because I do not have a "restore" soft button when I open the backup assistant app. How do I restore my contacts?

    Have you updated the dreaded Backup Assistant program?  I think you need to do this first before you can restore.

  • Hello.  My 1st Generation Apple TV with HDMI cable does not turn on.  Its a used model purchased on eBay.  I've checked and ensured that the electrical plug works.  Is there anyway to manually check to see if the unit turns on or do I have a defective uni

    Hope I'm using this forum right.  I purchased a 1st Generation Apple TV on eBay.  Unfortunately, I cannot get it to turn on.  I have another Apple TV (1st Generation) that works flawlessly on another TV.  So I tried to use the new unit on this TV with same electrical cord and HDMI cable.  No luck.  It would not turn on.  So I do not know if I have a defective unit or if there's another method of turning on the Apple TV.  Again:
    1.  I double checked and it was on the correct HDMI setting (the other Apple TV worked on it) and used the same cable
    2.  I double checked that the electrical was correct - again, the other Apple TV worked correct.
    Any suggestions on fixing this would be most appreciated.
    Thank you

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    A good indication would be the status light to begin with, it should flash rapidly on start up and then settle down (assuming the status light is working-they have a habit of fading)
    The other thing you could try is cycling the resolutions in case the previous user has left it on a setting that your TV doesn't support.
    Press and hold both the 'menu' and '+' on the Apple Remote for about 6 seconds.
    Press '+'or '-' on the Apple Remote to cycle through the display resolutions.
    Pause a couple of seconds after each press for the Apple TV to accept your selection.
    When Apple TV reaches an acceptable display resolution and “If you can see the Apple logo, select OK” appears on your TV screen, press 'select' .
    If that doesn't help, I fear the Apple TV is defective.

  • Satellite C640-i4010 - warranty for purchase from online store

    Hi there,
    I had to purchase a laptop Satellite C640-i4010 from flipkart.com.
    Site states that 1 year carry-in warranty will be provided.
    Then i talked to toshiba customer care but the executive told me that toshiba has not authorised any online reseller.
    Flipkart .com personels every time say that they have agrement with toshiba but that is confidential and i have believe their verbal assurance.
    I am confused now. No one is able to solve my dillema.
    Please help

    Hi
    This is user to user forum so I doubt that someone here can provide any other details to you about this online store
    But fact is that you can purchase a additional warranty directly from Toshiba and i would recommend doing that.
    All information can be found on different Toshiba warranty pages (this depends on your home area).
    If you are from USA then I recommend checking the Toshiba US warranty page:
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp
    If you are from Europe I recommend checking Toshiba European warranty page:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com -> Peripherals & Services
    If you are from Asia check Toshiba Asian page:
    http://pc.toshiba-asia.com
    Here is also a Toshiba india page:

    Edited by: darvesth on Mar 19, 2013 4:08 AM

    thank you darvest, i follow your step before.
    but i added any steps after that.
    1. include saaj-impl-1.13.jar and saaj-api.jar in project adapter
    2. add parameter "SOAPConstants.SOAP_1_2_PROTOCOL" in line code, MessageFactory mf= MessageFactory.newInstance()
    -> MessageFactory mf= MessageFactory.newInstance(SOAPConstants.SOAP_1_2_PROTOCOL);
    so, my problem already resolve..
    i hope this solution usefull to resolve our problem, darvest.

  • Dirsync - does it have to be done at forest level?

    Hi,
    Scenario:
    Single Forest
    3 Domains (DomainA, DomainB, DomainC)
    Each domain has a separate Azure Tenant, the key is not to have user "bleed" between tenants thus only users in DomainA are in AzureTenantA, users in DomanB in AzureTenantB etc.  As I understand it the only way to achieve this
    is to install a DirSync server per domain but at Forest level and then apply filters to stop the sync'ing of the all the users within the entire Forest into the Azure tenants.
    Which brings me to the question in the title of this thread, does DirSync have to be done at the forest level?
    Cheers
    Rob

    Thanks for the reply Vivian.
    With a bit of testing I've got this working now.
    I built a test Active Directory on-premise with a single root domain forest with two tree domains like so:
    The plan is to only sync the users from DomainA into AAD.
    I've installed DirSync onto the DC in DomainA and configured a service account within this domain. This service account needs adding to the Enterprise Admins group in the root forest domain.  I also had to add the account to the domain admins group
    within DomainA as well.
    On configuring DirSync I hit a "constraint violation" error, this was resolved by giving delegated access with "Replication permissions" to the service account created by DirSync (usually MSOL_xxxx) to  DomainA.  This allowed
    the configuration of DirSync to run.
    If I now run a full sync the AAD is populated with users from DomainA, DomainB and Forest.  This isn't what I wanted.....so off to DirSync FIM Synchronization service.
    In here I opened the "Active Directory Connector" within the Management Agents.  Select "Configure Connector Filter" -> "User" and add two new filters based on "UserPrincipalName" with an "Contains"
    operator for the two domain I don't need (DomainB and Forest).
    Forced a Sync and hey presto I have only DomainA users in AAD.
    Hopefully this information will be helpful to others.

  • Ios 8.1 phone contacts don't sync to MacBook Pro 10.6.8 using iTunes 11.3.1

    As noted in the header, any new contacts entered into my iPhone 5s will not sync to my MacBook Pro via iTunes when I try to sync via wifi or direct usb connection. What's up with that? New contacts that I enter directly into the laptop will sync to the iPhone, not visa versa. Anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

  • HT4623 updated to ios7 on Sunday - I am having major problems with my phone since - keeps freezing - updated itunes first then backed up my phone to my laptop.  Is it worth it at this stage doing a restore?

    I updated my iphone 5 to ios7 on Sunday and have been having m?ajor problems with my phone since.  It keeps freezing and I have to constantly press the home and on/off switch to get it to restart.  I had updated my itunes and backed up the phone before doing the update.  I'm getting very frustrated at this stage as the phone is practically useless.   Is it worth doing a restore?  Bearing in mind that I just tried to do that and got a message to turn off the 'find phone' feature in settings and when I tried to get into settings the phone froze again.

    I don't have a good answer for you but reading these forums, it seems that network drives can often cause problems with iTunes like you describe.

    Traded in my iPhone for a different brand of phone. I had no idea that I had to sign out of iMessage before doing this. Now, my old phone is gone and my new phone cannot receive texts from people who have iphones and had me as a contact before. They try to send an iMessage and I have no way to receive an iMessgae now. On some server somwhere my AppleID still tells people they should send me iMessages. What is the solution to this issue? Deleting my AppleID would work to solve this issue, but I cannot ever delete the ID? What can Apple do for this?

    If you did not erase your apps and data before getting rid of your old phone, try using Find My Phone and erasing everything remotely. See if this works.

  • THE IPHONE CANNOT BE SYNCED BECAUSE THIS COMPUTER IS NO LONGER AUTHORIZED FOR PURCHASED ITEMS THAT ARE ON THIS PHONE

    Hi I have a macbook pro (late 2011) running on Yosemite  and an iPhone 5s running iOS 8.1.2 and I have never had a problem until tonight. I wanted to sync my iPhone to add mew music but upon syncing I keep getting a pop up message saying "THE IPHONE "  " COULD NOT BE SYNCED BECAUSE THIS COMPUTER IS NO LONGER AUTHORIZED FOR PURCHASED ITEMS ON THIS PHONE" and tells me to go to the store tab on the top and to authorize this computer and every time I do it says computer is already authorized. I will also mention that my iTunes account is the only account that is used on my Mac and it is the only account I've used on my iPhone. Ive synced them plenty of time with no problems. I have never came across this message before and now my iPhone won't sync. I have been online for an hour now looking for solutions but I haven't found any that successfully worked. Ive rebooted both my Mac and iPhone with no success. ow for some reason when I plug my iPhone in it does not even charge but my Mac reads it and it shows up in the iTunes store so I tried syncing it again 1 more time snap it just gets stuck on step 1. I must also say state that is did successfully back up but absolutely will not sync. Can anybody please help me out without resetting my iPhone. Thanks

    Thanks Gail but ive tried that as well as logging oht and back into my accounts on my iphone and mac but I still get that message. I actually found a solution by unckecking my synced music playlist and clicking sync to remove it and then reclicked on my playlist to sync and it actually synced notmally and I got all of my new songs so I wanted to test it again so I clicked on sync again and the message once again popped up until I did the un-syncing and re-syncing again. I guess I will keep doing that in the future even though its annoying but its better than resetting my iphone.

  • What is apple doing to fix the bugs from IOS 7.1.2 update? this update has ruined my phone

    What is Apple doing to fix the bugs from IOS 7.1.2 update??? This update has ruined my phone! Why would you put out a update you know is going to ruin someones phone? Whats being done? I have tried everything to fix my phone which was just fine before Apples IOS 7.1.2 update!!!

    I have also experienced issues with my iphone5 since updating to ios 7.1.2, prior to this update my phone was working perfectly fine and I know I didnt cause any damage to the phone because I baby my iphone as if it was my child. Ever since I updated to 7.1.2 my phone shutts itself down while I am using it, it can be while using whatsapp, browsing the internet or using apps, more than anything it fails while using the internet. The screen will either start to flicker or vertical lines will pop up and then the phone will fade to black, after this happens the phone will get really hot and to turn it back on I have to wait 5-10 minutes and hold down the power and home keys at the same time for about 15 seconds for it to turn back on, I have to wait 5-10 minutes because if I dont when I boot it back up it immediately shutts down again. This is a constant all day thing and for now i get by just making phone calls and sending regular text but I try to keep the action down to a minimum to prevent missing a phone call. I tried clearing the phone and rebooting it to original setting but this didnt fix it. After reading and speaking with several techs they tell me that ios 7.1.2 rolled out some performance adjustments one particular that affects the amp levels that the battery works at and supposedly the iphone 5 cant handle it, they explained that the phone for certain activities is asking for more or less power and the phone panics into safe mode and shutts itself down. My battery life is fine so I havent changed the battery like someone had suggested. In the diagnostic data it gives a panic.ips error. Id really like to know if there is any possible way to roll back to 7.1.1 through jailbreak or any other way, I was perfectly happy with this phone and didnt plan on buying another one for atleast 1-2 more years. If anyone can help me out this would be greatly appreciated, if not I hope apple is working to fix this.
