HT1657 Once you download a movie do you have to have internet connection to view it?

Once your rent a movie and it downloads do you have to have internet connection to view it?

Welcome to the Apple Community.
From my own personal experience, I have found that when I turn off the Wi-Fi on my Wi-Fi only iPad, I am still able to play rented movies on it. I have tried this perhaps four or five times and in each case, this has been the result. I have also noted that other users have had the same experience as I.
However saying that I have noted a small number of users that have stated they are unable to view rented movies without an Internet connection. This knowledge base article from Apple, also suggests that an Internet connection is required.

Once you download a movie from iTunes do you have to have a wifi connection to watch it?

As long as the film has been fully downloaded to the iPad's Videos app then you should be able to watch it whilst offline

Please be aware of the movie rental's time limitation that you have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and once you start watching it, you have 24 hours to finish watching it. You may watch it as many times as you like during those 24 hours. It may be helpful to make sure the download completes successfully before you begin watching the movie.
Once the download is complete you can watch it without an Internet connection. However, an Internet connection to the iTunes Store is required to authorize playback or activate the 24 hours time-limit of movie rentals. This means, only during the starting of the movie. Once you have started playing the movie rental, internet connection is not required. You can play anywhere without internet connection.
For more information on movie rentals, you can visit:

Note: 24 hours time limit is for United States customer only, while 48 hours for other countries.

  • I have an IPad and want to download a movie.  I keep getting the message "There is not enough available storage to download your movie.  You can manage your storage in Settings".  I look in the settings and it says I have 5GB available?

I have been trying to download a movie to my IPad.  I have never had trouble before but the last two times I get an error message that says "Cannot Download" There is not enough storage to download your movie.  You can manage your storage in Settings.
When I go to my settings it says I have 5GB remaining storage and 5GB storage used.  I have deleted a lot of my music and games but am still having trouble.  Has anyone experienced this before?

5GB is typically not enough space to download a movie.  Often, movies take from 3 - 5 GB to begin with.  The only option you have is to delete more things from your iPad.  You can remove unused Apps, pictures, music, text message (messages with pictures can take up a lot of space), email messages, books, magazines etc.

how do you download a movie on the computer  (itunes) that is already on your apple tv

Silver AppleTV1 should be configured for syncing to iTunes, then right click on the AppleTV device in the sidebar and choose Transfer Purchases.
If it's a black AppleTV go to iTunes Store Movies section, and choose Purchased from the Quicklinks on the right - here you can download to iTunes from the internet (the AppleTV does not store the movie).

  • HT1657 If I download a movie today, but will not be watching it for a few weeks (i.e. when overseas) - when does the 'activation' period start?  Do I have 48 hours from the download date or when I first watch the movie?

If I download a movie today, but will not be watching it for a few weeks (i.e. when overseas) - when does the 'activation' period start?  Do I have 48 hours from the download date or when I first watch the movie?

You have 30 days from when you download it, but when you then start watching it you have 48 hours (24 if your account is US based) to finish watching it before it expires.

  • I've downloaded a movie on my iphone 4. How can i view it on my pc or a friend's ipad ? Thanks

I've downloaded a movie on my iphone 4. How can i view it on my pc or a friend's ipad ? Thanks

If you bought it via iTunes on your phone, right click on your phone in the device list and choose "transfer purchases". After that locate the movie in the iTunes library on your PC, double click to view it.
Since purchases are linked to your account, you can't do that on another device that is not authorized with your iTunes account.
