Bare in mind that Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device. Unless you have the same music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.

As for you own music, you may have to use a third party software. A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

Log into iTunes using the account the Purchase was made with... Click on Buy... and a notice will come up saying you already have it... do you wish to download it again... Click Yes... -
I am having a very hard time. First I finally got all of my music back into iTunes and then moved them all to my external hard drive. I set up iTunes to automatically put and get music from the external hard drive and whenever I open the drive al of the music is there. Now, I bought a new computer and went ahead and got iTunes all set up then tried to add folder to import from the external hard drive but all the music folders are empty! They show the names of the artists and the albums but there is nothing inside. Please help!!
If you've just moved the drive between systems then see Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows just in case that reveals the missing files. Apply to a single album folder first as a test. Otherwise, if you've not done too much with the drive since things went missing, an undelete tool might recover the lost media. FreeRecover looks promising... Select the drive, use the options to get file paths and check file integrity, then, presumably, you can restore anything that has been deleted that looks recoverable. Backup to another drive when you're done.

My Imac has been recalled by Apple to replace the Seagte 1TB hard drive. I was told to back up my computer and I have a 500gb external hard drive. The computers memory is 4gb. why is my 500 gb external hard drive not enough space?
Your backup drive has half the capacity of the internal drive. Depending on how much of the iMac's drive is full, the external drive may or may not be sufficient.
It is like trying to pour the contents of a gallon milk carton into a half gallon pitcher. You may be able to pour the entire contents into the pitcher - but not if the milk carton is more than half full. -
Title! I'm a starting up aspiring dj/musician. Thank you!
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Longer answers if for any reason you do not think all library files are inside your iTunes folder (changed preferences settings at some point):
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
2011 ilounge article: Transferring your iTunes library - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/ - An article with good background information (similar to the links above), particularly if you are not sure your media files are all grouped for quick answer above. Unfortunately under the single term "transferring library" it describes two very different moves; relocating just your media (not really transferring your library and not recommended unless you really need this configuration), and relocating media+database (really your whole "library"). Make sure you understand the difference before electing to move only media. -

I downloaded new songs and now it wont let me put them on my ipod unless i erase all of the songs and just put the ones in my library. I think there are something like 140 or less songs in the library and there are almost 300 on my ipod. What gives?
Hook up your iPod, there should be a selection somewhere that allows you to sync the iTunes purchased content ONLY back into your iTunes from the iPod.
Non-iTunes purchased content needs a third party utility, look at iLounge or elsewhere for it.
As always maintan a backup of your content on external medium, cd/dvd/external drive as Apple will not redownload content.
You bought it, your responsible for it's preservation. -
my hard drive is ready to die and want to move my itunes to an external hard then back to a new computer, will i have a problem syncing my ipod up to the new computer and in the process loosing all my music?
To be honest your post is rambling and difficult to read due to the lack of proper punctuation I only read it part way however...
The first thing to do is a proper backup. Your system has Time Machine built into it, here is the Time Machine Tutorial. Look that over, get yourself an external HD to use as a TM drive and backup properly! This will backup all of OS X however it will NOT backup MS Windows!
If you think your HD is failing then run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode and if it reports errors you can post them here.

I'm currently running Lion OSX, and I've already tried repairing the disk multiple times. At this point I really just want to rescue as much of my files as possible.
Thanks! Is there any critical data on the external drive? If not, partition it so there is enough room for the operating system and a recovery tool that you buy from the store on one partition, and enough to completely recover the contents of the internal drive. Partitioning is described here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61301
In the options section of the partition tab, be sure to select GUID for both partitions after selecting them. Once done, install the operating system on the first partition, and then install the recovery tool on it. Finally run the recovery tool to exttact the info to the second partition. -
i wiped my computer out yesterday and i want to keep the songs i have on my ipod and load more on there. how do i get the songs that are on my ipod back in my itunes library so i can keep those on my ipod and put more on it? I didnt purchase the music from itunes, they came from old cds i had and now dont have them anymore.

how do i do the music sync?
The music sync is how you got the music from the computer to the ipod in the first place.
You cannot sync it from the ipod to the computer as I explained in the previous post, unless it is itunes purchased music. -
I got a new laptop and I wanted to put my songs that are on my ipod onto my iTunes without losing the songs that weren't purchased. I have no way of getting onto my old laptop to get the songs if I lose them so I was wondering if there was any other way.

I want to copy the songs list onto word so I have a list of music in my itunes. Don't know how. Any ideas? Copy & Paste I get little MP3 icons.
VikiHello Uffda ND
You should still be able to print out the list in iTunes 11 by going to File > Print and then choose the option that suits you and you should be good.

hello,
if i back up my itunes library to an external hard drive and then add subsequent music and want to back up the newly added music a few days later, can i do it without backing up the entire library again? or do i need to back up the entire library each and every time i back up to the external hard drive?Just copy Users/yourusername/Music/iTunes (containing your library-files) to your external drive as well as that (extaernal) folder that contains all your audio-tracks.

Why iTunes can't let us copy the songs that is from our iPod to our PC?
I do not know why iTunes can't let us copy the songs that is from our iPod to our PC.
They should be in iTunes or on your backup.
If for some reason they are not on your computer and you have failed to maintain regular backups, see this post by Zevoneer -> http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11646661
