HT1766 Can itunes backup ipad/iphones to a different hard drive in windows?

I currently have a 100GB hard drive I use for my windows operating system, and itunes uses this location to backup my various iphones, and ipads. However I don't have enough hard disk space to manage the backups. Is it possible to direct itunes to backup and ipad to an external hard drive?

Yes. See this previous discussion. Some Googling is still required.

  • Can I store 80 000 pics from different hard drives on iPhoto on a Mac Mini?

I have some 300 GB of photos and short iPhone-videos on a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and a number of different hard drives. I think I have approximately 80 000 items.
    1.   I would love to have all this stored in one single place, can I buy a Mac Mini and just move everything to iPhoto on it?
    2.   Can I connect this Mac Mini to my Samsung TV and view the pics there?
    3.   Or should I use my Apple TV to connect the Mac Mini to my Samsung TV?
Or does anyone of you suggest any better solutions?

  • Can i backup iPad/iPhone to device via internet?

My MybookLiveDual is connected to internet via router at home. Can i backup selected files on my iPad remotely to the device via internet? I would like to do this while traveling if possible.

Of course you can backup iPhone to device via Internet just simply using iCloud. Indeed, iCloud provides easy way to backup iPhone.Go to Settings>iCloud and then scroll down to Backup. Here you can turn backups on and initiate a new backup immediately. If this is your first iCloud backup it might take a while to complete. Once the backup is complete, though, your iPhone will automatically backup when idle for an extended period of time and on an active wi-fi network. Of course, it is also simple to restore to other devices from iCloud after resetting your phone and choose "backup from iCloud".

  • How can I backup my files from a dead hard drive?

When I startup my mac I get a blinking question mark on a folder.
I assume I have to replace my hard drive but there are files that I absolutely cannot lose on there!
I know my files are there so how can I get to them?
I've tried holding C on bootup and nothing happened, and when I hold Option and click my boot drive, I still get the blinking question mark.
I need my files! Please help! Thank you.
    -Ryan

The blinking folder doesn't necessarily mean the drive is dead but it does mean the computer cannot find a valid system to boot from. There are lots of reasons this can happen and in some cases the data can be retrieved and sometimes it cannot. You'll need a valid boot disk - holding the option key merely tells the computer you want to choose the startup drive. If you only have one startup drive and it isn't functioning, you aren't going to get anywhere.
Since you appear to have no backup (or at least a recent one) you have a couple choices. You can try starting up the computer with the restore DVD that came with the computer (hold the C key as your restart), attempt to repair the drive, and reinstall the operating system. Under no circumstances should you reformat or repartition the drive. That will destroy the data - at least in terms of recovering it inexpensively. (If after booting with the restore disc you see no hard drive, that would indicate the drive is dead.)
Unfortunately, the restore DVD doesn't let you access the Finder and data which is why I always have a clone external drive I can use to boot up the computer and access the internal drive. If you have no internal drive you can get one at virtually any big box store today - it doesn't have to have a Made for Mac symbol on it. Connect it to the computer, restart with your restore disc, and then install the operating system on the external drive. Then restart with the external drive by holding the option key as you restart. If the internal drive mounts to the desktop you can copy your files. If it doesn't mount you can attempt repairing the drive with Disk Utility.
Assuming the drive is functional, a third possibility is a piece of software called Data Recovery. This is one of the tools in my arsenal and I've had pretty good luck with it retrieving files from drives that were badly corrupted. The program must be run either from a bootable DVD or another bootable drive and it requires a drive to put the data on. I keep a copy on my external hard drive (and you can download the program.)
    Good luck

  • Can I backup two Apple computers to one hard drive with time machine?

I have a 2007-vintage MacBook Pro running iOSX 10.6.8 and an iMac  running 10.5.8 -- Can I use a single external hard drive along with Time Machine to backup both of these computers without any problems?  The hard drive has already been backing up the iMac for a few weeks now and the SeaGate drive had to be reformatted to do that. How will I be able to separate the information saved on the hard drive to know which computer is which? (i.e., how "smart" is Time Machine's file structuring when it makes a backup?)

Do you mean you want to connect a USB drive to the TC?  If so, it will recognize a disk formatted in FAT32, but not ExFAT or NTFS.
If you mean you want a Windoze-like partition on the TC's internal HD, that's a bit trickier, since it can't be partitioned.  But you could create a disk image on it via Disk Utility, formatted MS-DOS (FAT) aka FAT32, or ExFAT  (I'm not entirely sure if ExFAT would work in a disk image there, but it might.)

  • Can iTunes be backed up on an external hard drive?

I got a new 5th Generation iPod. I have to upgrade my iTunes version 6.0.1.3 to versi. I have read on these forums how some have lost their music in iTunes after upgrading to version 7. I was wondering if I can save a copy of my iTunes onto an external hard drive before upgrading to version 7? If I was to lose all of my music could I get it all back from the external hard drive?

    Hi, eddie from pataskala ohio.
We love pro-active thinking here at the Apple Discussions and you're off to a great start.
Even though upgrading iTunes shouldn't affect your Library, one of the funny things about computers is that sometime, somehow, somewhere when you least expect it , they can do some not so funny things, like losing data that they're not supposed to. Which is why it's a good idea to have a back up copy of any data (such as your music) that you value in reserve ... just in case.
The most straightforward way, is to go to the iTunes Edit menu > Preferences > Advanced tab > General sub-tab and make sure your iTunes Music folder is assigned to its default location: C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\My Music\iTunes .
Next make sure all your music is stored in that folder by using the iTunes Advanced menu > Consolidate Library option.
Now you can copy the entire iTunes folder - the iTunes Music folder and the iTunes library files in particular - to your external drive.
If anything does go wrong with the upgrade, you'll be all set to recreate your Library.

  • How can I backup my photographs to a seperate hard drive (not with time machine)

I am in high school, now a senior and i am very into photography so a lot of my memory space is comprised of pictures adn my hard drive is filling up (Ive had my computer for about 5 years now and there's about 9.44 gb available). I have an external hard drive that  I use for time machine back ups, I went out and bought a second hard drive and i want to put my photography on there so i can erase some of the older ones off my computer but i will still have them on my hard drive. How do I do that?

iPhoto: How to move the Library to an EHD
Move iPhoto Library to External Drive
First... Make sure the EHD is Formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled)...
See here  >  Format, Erase, or Reformat a drive
    From here  >  http://pondini.org/OSX/DU.html
    Quit iPhoto if open.
Open your Pictures folder and select the iPhoto Library.
Drag the iPhoto Library to the External Hard Drive.
    Note:
Make sure everything is working to your satisfaction Before Deleting anything.

  • HT201210 How do I backup iphone on a different hard drive?

    Hi!
I want to update my iphone but I need to back it up before updating. Fine.  But it keeps backing up to my C drive and I don't have room for it.  My preference is set for a drive other than C.  So, I'm not sure why it keeps trying to backing up in C?  I need a back up for my back up?
    Thanks in advance,
    Lissa

    oh... that really *****...
My C drive is only has 5GB free, total 40GB.  It's a really old computer.  Anyways, everything is stored on an external hard drive.  I hope they'll change that someday.
    Thanks for the info!

  • There is not enough disk space to download new messages. How can I backup my old emails onto my hard drive to create room for new message?

When trying to download new email messages I receive an error "There is not enough disk space to download new messages. Try deleting old mail, emptying the Trash folder, and compacting your mail folders, and then try again." I have emptied my trash, removed all the junk, deleted about 1gig worth of email and im still having problems.
I have a ton of folders that I store all of my emails in, so that I can easily find older emails. This email has been working fine for me for about the pass 5-6 years and now I have problems. I would like to be able to back up my emails onto my hard drive so that I have them on hand. What is the best way to go about this? Because of my file structure I am not able to see all of my messages on one screen. Is there a way to select emails from a certain year?
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

''Try deleting old mail, emptying the Trash folder, and'' '''compacting your mail folders'''
If you did not compact the folders after marking the messages for deletion, you have not deleted anything.

  • Can I install Mountain Lion on a different hard drive when it's already installed on one hard drive?

I have a Mac Pro with two 2TB hard drives installed, one I use for storage, and one as my startup disk (also store things on there as well). I just installed two new 2TB drives and have set up a RAID 0 with them. I want to use the RAID drive as my start up disk, but I'm not sure if I can install Mountain Lion on the new RAID drive while it is still on the original start up drive. I also don't want to lose or erase any information from my current start up drive. Can anyone offer me guidance??

Firstly, you need to partition and format the SSD. You need to be able to boot the computer from another drive that has a bootable OS X system installed or a Snow Leopard DVD installer that works on the computer.
    Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Can you boot a MacBookPro from an external hard drive with Windows XP?

I'm planning on getting a MacBookPro with a 512GB Solid State drive.
Is there any chance I would be able to find a way to boot from an external drive that has Windows XP installed.
Why would I want to do that you ask? I want to travel with my Mac, but have access to certain programs(AutoCad2010 & 3dMax)that are supplied on my Employer supplied computer without carting it around too... it's a "brick." I know there are Mac versions of AutoCad and 3Dmax, but my employer won't supply me with them. (They are not smart enough to recognize the productivity benifits of Macs.) I thought it would be great to take the Hard drive, put it in a USB or Firewire case and just boot up from that. Probably just a crazy idea, but maybe some clever person knows a way?

Windows XP will neither install nor run on an external drive. However, your boot volume is more than large enough to accommodate a Boot Camp partition in which to run Windows. Or you can purchase Parallels or VM Fusion to run Windows in a virtual machine. Problem solved.

  • HT1766 Can I backup my iPhone to my iMac at home AND my Windows Laptop at work ?

New to iPhone.  I have it backed up to my iMac at home but would like to back it up to my Windows 7 Laptop at work.  Any problems in doing that ? Should I create another Apple ID for the Windows 7 Laptop ?
    Thanks,
    RJ

You can only sync to one itunes account.  IF you try to backup/sync to your work PC it will erase everything on your phone and you'll have nothing to backup to.
    Stick to your MAC.
If you need to backup look into icloud http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766

  • Can I transfer iPad/iPhone apps to an external drive?

I maintain the apps for my five grandchildren's iPads. They are constantly asking me to search through all the apps we have purchased in the past, transferring old favorites back to their iPads. They love to browse through the apps in my iTunes account on my computer. However, these apps are now taking up over 80 GB of precious storage. I know that they could simply download the ones I have paid for; but they often cannot remember the names and must view the list on my computer. (Also I have learned, the hard way, that when I give them my password I pay for in-app purchases.) Is it possible to transfer the apps to an external drive that would show up when I connect their iPads to my computer? I desperately need the space. Thanks!!!

  • Time Machine: Can I backup to more than 1 external hard drive?

would anyone know about this: i have a TM at home in boston which i use when i am there; however, now i am in taiwan where i will have a second TM to use here: apart from naming the two TMs differently on the laptop (macbookpro, tiger), is there anything i should look out for? with many thanks, steven totosy

Other users have successfully backed up their Mac to more than one Time Machine drive. As you stated, name them differently. You also need to switch TM drives, but that's only once after you've arrived at your new location. Note that after extended absences, TM may not want to continue with a backup and force you to create a new backup. I don't recall how much time has passed, but someone has stated 10 days, but I cannot confirm that.
