HT1766 Can the backup file for a IPAD be stored and accessed on an external drive?

Can the backup file for a IPAD be stored on an external drive to free up space on a computer?

There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.

    This has nothing to do with iTunes as iTunes provides no way to move or relocate the backup files.
    A search of google or the fourms would reveal ways to create a folder link to relocate the physical location where the files are stored.

  • Can I save files from my pc onto iCloud and access them from my iPhone?

    Hi, I'm new to iCloud. Just set it up on my iPhone and PC. Can I save files on my pc onto iCloud so I can access them from both my iPhone and PC?

    StoneMountainGirl,
    No. You can only music to your iPhone from one computer at a time.  If you try to load music onto it from a 2nd computer, it will erase the current content on the iPhone and replace it with whats in the iTunes library you are connected to,

  • Where can I find the backup files in iTunes for my iPhone, I want a copy

    Where can I find the backup files in iTunes for my iPhone, I want to copy the backup files for all app's and phone numbers, I'm using Windows XP
    I just need to know where its hiding, a link that shows an address where would sure help

    First you'll need to make sure your XP is set up to view hidden files and folders.
    1. Open My Computer from the desktop or Start menu.
    2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected.
    5. Click OK.
    Now you should be able to track down your backup file at the location in the following document:

    Of course, I have backed up to CD and/or external drive.
    I'm wondering if you're attempting to maintain your library on your external HDD? If iTunes has been directed to use a location on your external hard drive as your iTunes Music Folder location (you can check this in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced tab) you MUST ensure that the hard drive is connected to the computer and mounted in the Finder prior to launching iTunes. If it isn't, it can cause this error to appear. This is probably one of the most common reasons this error begins to appear.
    It seemed my purchased songs were the first to DISAPPEAR and I had to rebuy.(Nice scam in the bug?)
    So... why not restore them from your backup? If, for some reason, this wasn't an option, you could have also recovered them from any iPod or iPhone they were currently synced to (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848), or, you can also email iTunes Store support and request a "regrant," which is a once-per-account exception they might be able to offer you and allow you to download missing purchases again.
    I am now convinced this a HUGE BUG in 7.7.1. and possibly the previous version or two.
    I'm not so sure... I've never run across this particular error (my library is stored on my internal hard drive, but copied to an external for backup purposes with an application other than iTunes or Finder. I don't think Apple will provide acknowledgment to issues experienced only by very small numbers of people... I'm one of those, perhaps foolish, individuals who allows my computer to download updates immediately, rather than waiting for fear of problems, and again, I've never had this error.

  • I can't find the backup file.

    Hi all,
    I have a simple question to ask to this forum.
    I have a Compaq 6910p. I just re-installed XP pro (with SP3).
    After I completed installation, I run HP Backup and Recovery Manager, to make a copy of entire partiton c: (I have 3 partition).
    1st question:
    When program started, I noted that software do not offer the choose to copy the backup file in a cd/DVD support and then I decided to make the disk as destination of the backup file.
    Why program not offer other choose for destination file? Is it normal?
    2nd question:
    After completed the backup, I searched it on the disk the backup file to copy it on a DVD  , but I not found it. Where is it?
    Thanks for help

    You should be able to verify the backup location by accessing the change settings option in the following document.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/set-up-or-change-automatic-backup-settings
    If you navigate to the location indicated in the settings and it's still not there, try enabling view hidden files and folders to ensure it isn't hidden to protect it.
    The backup may be too large to fit it onto a single disk. The only way I know to get a Windows Backup to span multiple disks is to use Windows Backup and set the DVD drive (which it wouldn't let you at the time) as the destination. It spans the backup across multiple disks at the time it is created in a unique way.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    I have seen previous versions mentioned in a pop up message before on iCloud.com, but I'm not really sure at all how it would help, as I couldn't get it to do anything.
    The best advice I have at this time is to back up your work on your iOS device by regularly saving it to iTunes, if anything goes wrong you can then either load it into the numbers app again on the device or recover it via iTunes on your computer.
    My syncs are immediate, I never get chance to see if it works in the background, sorry.

  • Trying to use a new, larger external hard drive for my Time Machine backup.  However, every time I start the backup, it gets started then fails.  And, I can't delete the few files that did save on the external.  Sort of a catch 22.  Any ideas?

    Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

    Don't you just love changes in interfaces?
    I found the answer to my question.
    When you attach a device (iPhone, iPad) to your Mac, in iTunes 12 in appears as a tiny icon in the second "row" of the iTunes display. Click the icon and the familiar iTunes display for the device appears. From there, on the Summary screen, you can see the dates of the backups of the device (iCloud and backup to the computer). You can also use the button to backup to the computer.

    You may have to do this several times.
    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
  • I am trying to get space on an external hard drive which has some old time machine back up files that I do not need but can not eliminate, even by going into the time machine, clicking on the backup file to be eliminated and using the drop down eliminate
    I am trying to get space on an external hard drive which has some old time machine back up files that I do not need but can not eliminate, even by going into the time machine, clicking on the backup file to be eliminated and using the drop down menu with the gear box symbol to eliminate
    I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
    You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
    See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
    You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
    The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.
  • Recently backing up my ipad onto my macbook, which is the backup server for all of my gadgets.  This includes all my photos and tons of music.  The macbook said it could not backup the ipad because there was insufficient disc space to do so. What now?
    I have a macbook operating OSX10.6.7.  Recently backing up my ipad which had lots of photos from a recent vacation.  I use this laptop as the backup server for all of my gadgets so it has thousands of photos and tons of music.  It just told me that it couldn't back up the ipad bc there wasn't enough disc space.  I was afraid that this would happen eventually.  What next?  Newer laptop with more space?  I'm not sure what files I could sacrifice to free up more space as most of these are important.
    What size hard drive do you have in your MacBook? The cheapest options are, a larger internal hard drive, or an external drive. Or you could get a cheap desktop PC and network to it for storage. I've got one that lives in the hall with 3 Terabytes (That's 3000gb) of storage.
  • Is it possible to check the previous backups on a certain backup file for the iPhone.
    Is it possible to check the previous backups on a certain backup file for the iPhone. I need to backup and restore the files which were used in the second week of January, but now I am only able to see the latest iteration of the backup. I am assuming that the iPhone backup rewrites on the same set of files. I may be mistaken. Is there any work around to see the old backups? Any kind of help would be seriously appreciated.
    You can use zoom: Settings>General>Accessibility.
