If you bought the machine new yourself, and did not enter a password when configuring it, leave the field blank.
If you bought it used, then you need to reset the password, as described here:

  • When i try to play Music or a video the volume comes up with full bars and a stop sign, how do i get back my volume?

When i try to play a music or video or anything the volume bars come up full but with a stop sign underneath, i don't know how to get back my sound.

The way that usually works best is to move the entire iTunes folder folder from the current location to X:\iTunes where X: is the letter of the external drive.
If you moved the iTunes Media folder "by hand" instead of using iTunes to relocate the media folder then:
Move the main iTunes folder to X:\iTunes
Move iTunes Media inside it as X:\iTunes\iTunes Media
Press and hold down the shift key as you click the icon to start iTunes
Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library.
(If iTunes opens normally/with an empty library close it and go back to step 3)
Click choose and open X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl.
If you still have a problem try my script FindTracks.

After Loading Lion I now get 5 windows w/ a graphic of a Red Stop sign with an ! mark and the following text message:
    "DAVE Networking

71 - Too many levels of remote in path."
I have uninstalled DAVE and used Clean App to remove trace elements of program, however I still get the message and am unable to eliminate the error messages.  When I click OK the message goes away briefly and then comes back up.
    Any solutions would be great.

    Dave,
Thanks....What I did was load the free eval version of Dave 9.0 and then used the uninstaller which must have deleted the kernel giving me the problem.
    Thanks for the response.

  • Booting the compute: It wants to start then the screen get a big red stop sign and will not finish booting

I turn on the computere.  It starts to boot I get the apple logo in the center of the screen.  Then I get a red stop sign in the middle of the screen.  The small wheel is still turing but the computer will not start.

Start your iMac with the original DVD that came with the computer then run disk utility on the hard drive to repair it, also repair your permissions.

  • How do I get rid of the "stop sign" next to some of my music and enable them to play?

I just downloaded songs to my iphone and now all the new songs and some old ones have the stop sign next to them. How can I either turn off iCloud (which is what I'm assuming is the problem) or just become able to play the songs. Whenever I try to play them, they get skipped over.

hey i had this problem and it really annoyed me, i decided to play about and i have sorted it out, for now anyway lol.
late reply but i literally just sorted the problem out for my phone.
what i did i connected my phone to my pc, went on itunes then into my phone.
where there is the info about your device and you can select the tick box options to sync automatically, manually ect there is an option that says 'Convert higher bit rate to ??? kbs AAC' i ticked that box and i used 256 kbs for better quality songs but any of the 3 options should work. itunes then converts all your songs then they should work.
    well mine did anyway
    hope this helps

The computer (top / back of monitor) gets really hot within minutes.

    How old is the iMac?
With no backup, you have probably lost all your data.
Sounds like serious hardware problem for which you are going to have to take it to Apple for an estimate of repairs.

Thank you very much for your reply. I did what you advised command-I and at the bottom where it says Sharing and Permissions I am listed and "everyone" to read and write. I see no place to change anything to unlock the desktop to move the files around. Could you help some more?

    Hello jwpg,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing after restoring an iCloud backup.  I recommend the following articles for an issue like this:

  • Mac won't start, gives me the kernel stop-sign

Ok, this is my big big problem..
One day, i was just doing nothing on my dear computer, starting up firefox or something, then suddenly everything stopped. I couldn't do anything. I forced-restarted the computer with the boot-button. When im trying to start it over again, i get to the white startup-screen with the apple-icon in the middle, with the loading-circle underneath it. After a while, the apple-icon changes to a grey stop sign (picture of it further down).
    So, what have i tried?
Trying to boot with CD, says i can't install Mac OS, but i can go into the Disk utility, Verify Disk / Repair Disk:
    Verifying volume "Macintosh HD"
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid node structure
    Invalid B-tree node size

Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I have time machine on my external hdd, but when pressing the time machine-button after trying to start with CD, nothing happens.
When starting the computer holding down SHIFT-button, i get a white screen with black text, and a square saying 'You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again." The black text in the foreground says:

Ok, so i cant boot the computer with the shift key, just gives me bad error message. Nothing particular is happening while booting with the X-button and i've tried to reset PRAM.
I really don't know what to do... and my computer is from 2009, has worked pretty good (until now), and i dont have any warranty...
    EDIT:
I've also tried to boot it with holding down cmd-s, and i just get a repeated message saying alot of stuff...

    Something like that.....

There is this Apple Knowledge Base article, which describes your issue:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1892?viewlocale=en_US
However, it sounds as though you have tried most of what's there. If it won't allow you to reinstall the OS, then there is definitely something amiss with your hard drive.
Sometimes a third-party disk utility (such as Drive Genius) can repair a drive when Apple's own Disk Utility cannot.
    Good luck with it.

  • Can't boot on my external hard drive on another Mac (stop sign)

    Hi,
My system is placed on an external SSD connected to my iMac.
I've just bought a brand new Mac Mini and I wish to boot it using my SSD.
When I pick it up in the startup alternatives list (maintening the "Alt" key pressed during the boot), I just get a gray screen with a stop sign at the middle. Then the Mini shuts down.
Isn't it possible at all to use the same boot disk on my iMac and on my Mini ? (I don't intend to use it constantly on both, I was just hoping to migrate flawlessly using the same System disk).
    Note :
    - when I plug it back to my iMac, the iMac boots up normally
    - if I boot my Mac Mini using the internal hard drive, I can access to all the content of my SSD. I performed a full disk check on it using the Disk Utility and everything's fine. I just can't boot with it.
    - of course, both of the systems (iMac/SSD and Mac Mini internal HDD) are up-to-date (10.8.2)
    Thanks for your help.

Most likely, the new mini can't boot with the iMac's components. See Don't install a version of Mac OS X earlier than what came with your Mac and Computer-specific Mac OS X releases for details.

  • MacBook Pro unable to boot up [Stop Sign], after rEFIt Installation

I was trying to install Windows on my MacBook Pro, Intel Based.
    Followed this tutorial, http://riactant.wordpress.com/2009/02/25/install-windows-on-boot-camp-using-exte rnal-usb-optical-drive/
Downloaded and installed rEFIt and rebooted my MacBook Twice.
After rebooting twice, my MacBook no longer boots up.
It will stay at the apple logo until it turns into a stop sign, a circle with a slash across.
I have searched desperately for a method but came to no conclusion.
When i did command + s, It keeps saying "Searching for root device", or something along that line.
When I tried to boot from my Installation disc while holding down C.
I went into Disk Utility and my Mac HD was renamed to disk0s2.
I am very afraid that my data will be lost, all my freelance invoices and work will be gone.
I am unable to go into safe mode.
I am VERY sure this happened immediately after I installed rEFIt.
If only there's a way for me to somehow restore to the moment before I installed this software.

If you've never backed anything up because you weren't expecting to need backups, you would have lost all your data sooner or later no matter what else you did. Fooling unnecessarily with rEFIt just brought it about a little sooner.
Replace your hard drive before messing around with it any more. Once you get a new drive installed and your machine back up and running, mount the old one in an external enclosure and see whether data recovery software can salvage any of your files.
    Data Rescue: http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
    FileSalvage: http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id= 1
Both utilities are offered in demo versions that will show you what the full version could recover before you have to pay for anything.

  • Stop sign in the start process of process chain

    Hi Team,
We are seeing a 'stop sign' in the Start process of a 'Process Chain'.  Normally there's a green tick. Any idea why ?  We did manually post a day's data.
    Thanks,
    R T

option 1. right click and display all jobs. If you see two released jobs, delete one of them. Also check the validity on the user-id of the scheduled job.
option 2. activate & schedule the pc again. If it still shows red stop. right click & get more info from the message long text. May be the start process is deleted somehow.

  • Help with stop sign on screen - please!

My hard drive has packed up and I have a new one which I have formatted on another G5.
When I start up now I get a folder with a flashing question mark in it.
If I insert my copy of panther then the disk spins and the screen goes to the apple grey screen, but then comes up with a stop sign and I can't proceed any further.
I have tried holding down C when booting up and also alt which brings up a blue screen which shows the osx disc but then it just goes to the stop sign when I proceed.
Please help, why won't the operating system load on?
Because the old hard drive is broken, I only have internet at work.

Hi Kevin, and a warm welcome to the forums!
While you may get help or a solution here, It's quite acceptable to start a new topic of your own, certainly feel free to start a new topic to attract more helpers to your particular situation, here's a link if as is often the case, it's hard to find out where to do it...
    http://discussions.apple.com/post!default.jspa?forumID=596
Or the iMac G5 forum where I don't hang out, but many hood helpers there...
    http://discussions.apple.com/post!default.jspa?forumID=134
The we are hanging here is a Kernel Panic, usually in your situation a wrong Install Disc, bad Disc, or bad Reader.
Do you have another Mac with Firewire around?

  • MacBook Pro not booting after stop sign appears

    Hi,
On Friday I was browsing twitter whilst running photoshop CS5 on my MacBook Pro 13", when safari crashed on me. I tried to close safari normally, but it wasn't responding.
After trying the various ways of closing the program, I was forced to just leave it and hope for the best. I opened photoshop to try and burn some time whilst waiting for safari to respond - unfortunately photoshop proceeded to crash as well. Shortly after CS5 crashing, I stopped being able to input from the keyboard or trackpad clicks. At this point, not even the finder would open , and after some quick research I decided the only thing left to do was to power down the MBP by holding down the power button for a few seconds.
Once it had powered down I left it for a good amount of time (maybe 20-25 mins) and turned it back on again. Everything seemed to be working just fine with the reboot - untill the grey apple logo was replaced with a 'stop sign' above the loading wheel. This sign stays there for hours and nothing happens, and I can't even boot in safe mode either .
One last thing - I bought this MBP from my cousin, and it has had several problems before (such as replacing the hard drive in the apple store) and is under warranty untill october.

Can you boot to the Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting)? If so, use Disk Utility to both verify and repair permissions and verify and, if needed, repair the hard drive. If the hard drive can't be repaired, and you're still under warranty, or even if you can't boot into the Recovery partition, make an appointment at your local Apple Store and have them take a look at it. If your cousin didn't transfer the warranty to you (which, the last time I did it, was an arduous task) then have he/her take it in.
Good luck - let us know if you can get to the Recovery partition...
    Clinton
