Hello,
I needed to do a hard reset on my iPhone 3GS and it's taking me too much time. It's taking almost 3 hours by now!!!!
I did it by going to "Settings, General, Reset, Erase All Content and Settings", confirm it and then the iPhone turns off, gets the screen black with only the animated circle going on. And it's been there since then.
Is this a symptom of something bad? Should I do the hard reset by another way?

Hello Ali Syed,
It sounds like your phone is stuck at the spinning gear icon on the screen after Erasing all Content and Settings on your device. I would start by resetting the device with this process:
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
From: Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

If the issue persists you may need to put the phone into recovery mode, and then restore it with iTunes as a new device:
If you can't update or restore your iOS device

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Take care,

    I recommend that you
Create a NEW account/ID for her using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before. Make sure you specify a birthdate that results in being at least 13 years old
Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card
Use the new ID on her iPod but only for:
    Settings>Messages>Send and Receive
    Settings>FaceTime
    Settings>GameCenter
    and Settings>iCloud
Continue to use the same/common Apple ID for Settings>iTunes and App stores so you can share purchases.

    Yes ... from your iPhone.
Hopefully you have them backed up somewhere.

  • My 32gb Touch was stolen but have content stored in iTunes.  Can I sync all content including notes, calendar, apps, etc to the iPhone 3GS?

My 32gb iPod Touch was stolen but have content stored in iTunes.
Can I sync all content including notes, calendar, apps, etc to the iPhone 3GS 16gb?
And, will the data that was stored on the iPod Touch be recovered?!  Obviously I will have to unclick some of my photos and music for example in order to fit content onto the iPhone

If you had synced the ipod to the itunes yes
connect your iphone to itunes and then under devices u'll see iphone right click and u'll see restore backup

  • Restore vs Erase All Content and Settings

I have bought a new iPhone 6 and am going to sell my old iPhone 4.  I have restored my old iPhone but I did not go through the 'Erase All Content and Settings' option before doing so.
What I would like to know is this:  Is Restoring the phone through iTunes as secure a way of deleting the content as the 'Erase All Content and Settings' option?
    Many thanks.

    Hi ..
    Yes it's secure.
You can do this directly on the iPhone without iTunes.
Tap Setttings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
If you have not done so, create a backup prior to erasing all content using iTunes >  Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iCloud or iTunes
That way you have a backup just in case for the iPhone 6.

  • HT5661 i have an iphone 3 i am selling .. if i go to erase all content and settings .. will the apps still be on the phone .. i've never been able to add apps to this phone and don't want to lose them

how do i prepare my iphone 3 to sell ..
i've never been able to download new apps so i don't want to lose the apps that are on there
am i to reset all settings? or erase all content and settings? or reset network settings?

Only the apps that are part of iOS will remain on the phone.
If you're going to sell it, use "Erase All Content and Settings".
If you're selling it, what difference does it make to you if the apps get erased? You don't have the legal right to transfer any apps you bought to anyone else.  Not to mention the fact that you stated you have never been able to download new apps...
Why don't you just re-post the question in your native language.  There are so many contradictions in your post that i don't believe you're conveying the questions you think you are.

i have selected the Erase all contents and settings option in my ipod touch 4. till then i was not able to turn it on and even it was not detectable on itunes. what should i do now?

I am confused. You said till you Erases all contents and setting yu could not turn it and iTunes did not see it.  How could you Erase all Contents and Setting if you could not turn it on?

  • I have an iPod running iOS 5.1.1 and am trying to erase all content and settings

But whenever I try I get a box saying that I have 6 failed passcode attempts, and to wait for X time. The trouble is the device has never had a passcode on it, so I'm not sure how there were 6 failed attempts. I have tried putting a passcode on and then entereing it, but that failed as well. How do I erase all content if this keeps happening?

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

  • Erase all contents on my iPhone

I have begun to erase all contents on my phone as part of the network unlock process but I started this almost 24 hours ago and it still has not completed. There has been a spiraling wheel in the middle of the screen since it begun. Can anyone advise me on what to do?

    Hello Stephiworld,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you are trying to restore the phone to its factory defaults but the process is stalled or the phone is totally unresponsive.
If the phone will respond to the Sleep/Wake button, I would turn it off the normal way, then turn it back on.
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
When it turns back on try the Erase All Content and Settings option again.
If the iPhone is completely unresponsive and will not turn off normally, I would reset the device with this process from the above article:
If your device stops responding, you can reset it by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    Cheers,

  • I have reset my ipad using General Reset Erase All Content and Settings. And now it will not boot. All i see on screen is the Apple logo. What do i do?

I have reset my ipad using General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. And now it will not boot. All i see on screen is the Apple logo. What do i do?

When you restore, you can restore to factory settings or to a backup. Restoring to factory settings removes everything and takes you back to out of the box status and you start all over again. Restoring from your backup will replace all of your app data, bookmarks, email settings and things like that. You still may need to sync all of your purchased apps and music, photos and so on back to the iPad.
I assume you want to restore from your backup to put all of you data back on the device so connect the iPad to your computer, launch iTunes, right click on the device name on the left side under the devices heading and select restore from backup. After you restore from your backup, make sure that you sync all of your other content with iTunes.

  • I have an iPhone 4 that I need to reset completely. If I erase all content and settings, will it no longer be registered under my phone number?

I have an iPhone 4 that I need to reset completely. If I erase all content and settings, will it no longer be registered under my phone number?

Yes, the phone will still be connected to your Verizon account. In order to remove it from your Verizon account, you will either need to activate another phone on that number or disconnect the number.

  • HT4623 I cannot update my iPhone 4.  I have reset and erased all content and my phoine still does not have a "software update" under the general settings.  What now?

I cannot update my iPhone 4.  I have erased all content and reset the phone, however, there is still no "software update" under the general settings on my phone.  I keep trying to download the update through iTunes and it quits everytime without success.  Any suggestions?

READ the entire article from which the question was posted.
It clearly states that the "Update Software" option ONLY applies to iOS 5 and later.

  • Is resetting your iPod touch 5g through settings - general - erase all content the same thing as restoring your iPod when it's plugged in?

My iPod was randomly restarting itself but I think I fixed it by completely resetting the iPod through the settings

No. Restoring via iTunes reinstalls the entire iOS while Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content only deletes all user information.

  • I wish to reset my ipad.  However, when I selectGeneral Reset Erase all content and Settings, I am prompted for a a Restrictions Passcode (which I have never set).  I have now entered random codes 11 times and the ipad not reset. How do I get past this?

I wish to reset my ipad (as advised by the Apple Store) to attempt to resolve an issue with a non-responsive part of the screen..  However, when I select General>Reset>Erase all content and Settings, I am prompted for a a Restrictions Passcode (which I have never set).  I have now entered random codes 11 times and the ipad has not reset. How do I get past this?  I am now at the point where I have to wait 60 mins before I can enter another random passcode.  I just want the ipad to clear down, erase everything so I can start again.

The other option is to force iPad into Recovery Mode.
