HT204135 Printer sharing between OS X 10.8 and OS X 10.4.11 ain't working no more since the upgrade from Lion 10.7.

Hi,
I'm running a 2012 iMac Intel with OS X 10.8., and on this Mac everything just runs fast, fine and smooth.
But we still run also several older iMac G5 that share the printer which is connected to the new Intel iMac.
With OS X Lion 10.7., printer sharing worked just fine, but since the upgrade to 10.8., the old G5 iMac's don't list
nor find the shared printer any longer.
Thanks for any hints and clues how to eventually solve this problem,
Jan

  • File Sharing between Snow Leopard MacBook Pro and Mac OS 8.6 Powerbook 1400

well ok, for some this might sound ridicule. Why should I still be using a 13 year old PowerBook. Let me tell you, this is writing/typing heaven, Zen-like; no distractions at all, no twitter, no internet (although possible), no emails just pure you and your text and if you spin down the HDD, absolute silence. as said before pure Zen writing heaven. and on top of that you're typing on the best keyboard ever on a laptop.
As you might see I love my vintage masterpiece of a laptop and use it on a regular basis. Just one Problem.
Since I Installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro 17" I just haven't been able to establish a connection between the two machines.
I have to admit, I'm not that versed with OS 8.6 but with 10.5 I had absolutely no problems accessing the shared folders on my MacBook Pro and vice versa.
My first thought was to activate Appletalk on the ethernet on my Macbook, which I failed to find anywhere. The Apple Discussions Forums revealed that Appletalk has been dropped with the introduction of Snow Leopard but all the entries where regarding printing issues with shared printers, I didn't find anything about actual file sharing and thus did not get any clues how to share files between my two machines.
My PowerBook 1400cs/166 runs on 8.6 and I use a Global Village Platinum PCMCIA card (modem and Ethernet combi card). this setup worked perfectly with 10.5 but I have not been able to make establish a connection since running 10.6 on my MBP.
I am really desperate since I heavily depend on being able to exchange files between those two machines through an ethernet connection.
So I kindly ask anyone who might be able to help me to please consider posting any solutions or at least ideas which could help me with my problem. I really would greatly appreciate any effort whatsoever.
Thank you very much for your time.
    EDIT:
What I forgot to mention: strangely enough, when I enable Internet Sharing on my MacBook Pro (through Airport) to Ethernet, my PowerBook 1400 can connect to the internet without any problems.

First of all let me thank you very much. It actually works (partially).
There seems to be a problem though. While I can connect perfectly from my MBP 10.6 to my PowerBook 1400, the other way round doesn't work.
My MBP does not show up in the Network browser of OS 8.6 but I could life with that.
The problem is that if I try to connect to my MBP from my PB1400 by entering the IP directly a alert message appears reading that the "User Authentication Method required by this server can't be found, please check the AppleShare folder in the Extensions folder and try again".
Do you have any clues what I'm doing wrong or where the problem may lie?
    PS.
Even if you may not be able to further help me with this problem, I ow you a great deal of gratitude and am very thankful for your help so far. At least I can exchange files between the two machines and that's what I needed in the first place.

  • Can not print with HP LaserJet 6L since the upgrade to Mavericks.

Can not print with HP LaserJet 6L since the upgrade to Mavericks. Any alternative driver for this printer?

I have an HP LaserJet 5P and had the same problem. My LaserJet is connected to a D-Link ethernet print server, then to an Airport Express to support wireless printing.
As recommended in earlier posts, I first downloaded the Gutenprint HP drivers at Sourceforge, version 5.2.9 That did not work. Then found the reference to the Apple kb here: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl907
Downloaded these drivers. When setting up the printer, I got the autoselect option for Generic Postscript Printer and used that. Printer worked, but printed out garbage. I then deleted the printer, and this time selected the HP LaserJet 5P CUPS + Gutenprint v.5.2.9 THAT WORKED! I don't know if was the combination of downloading the drivers from Sourceforge and the Apple kb, or just the Apple kb that solved the problem, but I'm glad this is now sorted.
I was a bit surprised when I hit this snag to begin with because the last upgrade I did from Lion to Mountain Lion, I did not have this issue. It was seamless.

I have not directly myself. One of the reps put me on hold while they said they spoke to finical services. He said they would not turn off my phone while he (the rep) looked into the problem. He couldn't give me a phone # to call him back the next day and told me he would call me instead on my home land line phone #. But what I got the next day was a text message that started with" DO NOT RESPOND" to this text message and it said that I was past due on my account, and that it was due immediately. signed out again with only his first name and no phone # again. Thing is he promised he could help in my first conversation with him, where I had started with "can I speak with a supervisor as I did not want to have to repeat the whole spiel again as he was going to be my third time". He said he was authorized to take care of all & any problems and I did not need a supervisor. I took him at his word and said OK. Turns out like I said earlier…I wasted 2 hours on the phone. Can't find him as I don't know what call center and no last name. I should have gotten that up info front. Hindsight is 20/20.

  • Problems with file/print sharing between macs

I just recently created a network between my mac pro and my imac. I discovered that the only way that I could share files/printers between the two is if I shut off the firewall on both machines. If I let the firewall 'allow only essential services ie, file and printer sharing, the machines would see each other and the printers, but would not allow either to connect. Any suggestions?

    Thanks a lot Frank.
The firewall has always been disabled, since I baught my iBook.
There's two issues, the irc app and the videocam app.
Guess the videoapp is an easier issue. The port is 2000-2002
The irc application is I think a little more complicated, it has two settings in the prefs file (the app is IRCLE):
    1. In the DCC prefs I flagged the "ADSL, Airport, IPNetRouter and have flagged the auto configure for the Public IP Number (151.51.138.131).
    2. There is also a Firewall prefs. I haven't done anything with this. There's an areal called "Ident Settings (OS X only)". There one can flag the "Run Ident on a different port than the usual 113" If one flags that, then you can choose the port (it says it must to be 1024 or greater). "Note: you may need to change your firewall rules to make ident work this way, redirect incoming ident data for TCP port 133 to the port set above"
    Does this make any sense?
    Thanks a lot again, really,
    Emmanuel

  • File and Printer Sharing between Windows 7 RC and XP

I was wondering if any one has successfully networked Windows 7 with XP? I have several machines on a home network, only this one on Windows 7, all the others are XP Pro. While I can browse and access files on the XP machines from Windows 7, I am unable to access files on this machine from any of the XP machines on the network. Also have been as of yet unable to print from this machine to a shared printer on one of the XP machines. When I try to add the neworked printer to this machine, I get an access denied error. There must be some prmisions settings I am missing some where.
Any help would be apriciated. If this queston has already be ansewared in another post, I apologize as I did search unsucsesfuly for the solution.

Quote from "Jimbo45" on Windows 7 forum...
    http://www.sevenforums.com/network-internet/4602-xp-7-printer-sharing.html
I've posted on this before but to share Printers attached to XP computers with either X-64 or X-32 versions of W7 is SIMPLE. These instructions are for the Printer attached to the XP machine (but works in reverse as well).
("Stand alone" Network printers can be done slightly similarly BTW).
assume the computers are call XPMACHINE and W7MACHINE.
    1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.
    2) On the Network Browsing on your W7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share.
Now on the W7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).
    3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the W7 machine into thinking it's running the printer.
    4) Create NEW port==>Local port
    5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER
    6) Now W7 will load a driver and you'll be able to print on the XP machine.
    Simple
(For a "Network stand alone printer") at 4) chose TCPIP port
and at 5) enter the IP address.
If the printer is on the W7 machine and you want to print on the XP machine then do the same instructions on the XP machine --
port name in this case will be \\W7MACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER
It worked fine for me, I wonder why Microsoft don´t give this method as default?

  • File sharing between OS 10.3.9 and 10.5.6

I have an eMac running 10.3.9, and an AirPort router, but the eMac no longer connects to my iMac running 10.5.6. It worked until I installed Leopard on my iMac. Now when I try to connect in the usual way, in order to transfer files, the eMac just thinks and thinks and times out. Are these systems just incompatible? Or do I need to tweak my Sharing or Network settings somehow. I mean, they are both system 10, after all. It's not like I'm trying to connect up with 9. Thanks for any help.

I just answered another very similar question but I don't know how to cross reference that post so I'll just duplicate the info here.
I am going through the same thing. The issue is that the underlying way in which the Macs find each other has changed. The network code truly is incompatible between 10.3.9 and 10.4.11 and higher. But you can cope, so long as you know the IP address within your LAN.
On the 10.5.6 machine, go to the Finder and open the "Go" menu up there in the top menu bar. Select Connect to Server and type in the IP address of the machine you need to connect to.
In the Finder preferences, make sure that Computer is one of things that shows up in the left hand panel. Click it. On Computer, you'll find Network and clicking on that should now show the machine you just entered. You'll get prompted for your password.
Notice that if the IP addresses happen to get shuffled around by the router, you'll have to set up the connection again.
At least, "it worked for me". I got access to my 10.3.9 machine from the 10.5.6 machine and can see all the files. (Can't yet figure out how to do remote printing to a non-network printer attached to the 10.3.9 machine though. It would probably be easier to walk upstairs...)
    Best of luck.

  • File sharing between PC XP SP 2 and Mac OS X 10.4.2

I would like to share file between my two Macs and a windows PC via AirPort. I can access from the PC to the Mac but not vice versa. I followed the instructions at www.efelix.co.uk/tech/3001.html but every time I try to get access to the PC with "connect to server" the system shows me error code -35.
    Any solutions?
    Thanks in advance!

My home network is similar, but I can't figure out what to do next in order to transfer files between the Macs and the PC.
I've disabled firewall (Windows) and internet security (TrendMicro), and confirmed IP and Submask Numbers. Still no success.
Here's more details of what I have:
AirPort Extreme Base Station connected to DSL modem.
eMac and three iBooks, connected wirelessly to ABS.
Filesharing is on for these Macintosh computers.
-This works fine for transferring files and for internet access.-
    Just bought eMachines T6520 running Windows XP Home;
connected via ethernet cable to ABS.
-This PC works fine for internet access.-
WHAT IS THE KEY TO GETTING THE Macs to see the PC, and the PC to see the Macs?

  • Sharing between OS 10.4.11 and OS10.5.5 works one way only

    This is strange:
I have two macs connected via ethernet.
My Intel MacPro using 10.5.5 and an iMac G4 PPC running 10.4.11.
    - I can connect from the iMac to the MacPro, see all folders and copy files without any problems.
    - I can establish a screen sharing connection from the MacPro to the iMac without problems.
    - I also can connect to the iMac from the MacPro.
BUT when I want to open the remote public folder on the iMac from the MacPro I get the error message "Der Vorgang konnte nicht abgeschlossen werden, das das Originalobjekt für ... nicht gefunden wurde."
Sorry for the German. Translated this means something like "the request could not be processed because the original object for (username) could not be found."
    And then I get disconnected.
Any idea why and how to connect ?
    Thanks
    Martin

    Ok, I found it.
I had both SMB and AFP connections enabled on both machines. On my MacPro however there was a problem with the afpfs.kext. I repaired permissions and everything is now working.
Strange - I read several times that repairing permissions is hardly ever needed under OS X 10.5. Seems not to be true...

  • Trying to do home sharing between OSX 10.5.6 and Windows 7.

My main music collection is on my Windows 7 machine since I have about 2.5 terabytes of storage on this machine. When I open iTunes 9.0 from my mac and go to Home Sharing I can see my home computer and I can connect to it. I can also see my wife Vista machine and connect to it. From my home PC I can see my wifes Vista machine and can connect to it but with my Mac I'm only able to see it, if I click on it to connect I get the "The shared library "my library" is not responding (-3259). I also get this error when I try to connect to the Mac from my wifes Vista machine. I enabled music sharing in iTunes on the mac, enabled file sharing and also ensured the firewall is allowing all incoming connections. I disabled the firewall on the home pc and also opened up port 3689 on my router as that's what the error message suggests.
Any other advice you could provide?

BDAqua wrote: Does OSX boot at all, or not?
Yes, it does. Right to where I am supposed to log in, but since the USB is not working (either mouse or keyboard), I'm stuck. I have to shut down and restart and boot into windows.

  • The "Print what you like" bookmarklet doesn't work since the upgrade. When you click it, nothing happens.

I use a program called "print what you like", and I have a bookmarklet installed for it. So when I'm on a page I want to use the program on, I click the bookmarklet and a sidebar window opens allowing me to modify the web page, etc. to how I want it before I print it. Now, when I'm on a page I want to use it on, when I click the bookmarklet, nothing happens. Some small text briefly appears about javascript??? but then disappears. So now I can't use the program.

Do you have javascript enabled in Firefox? To use bookmarklets, that is necessary.

  • HP printer shared between Mac & PC

After searching the forums I am having to post.
I have a Deskjet 5550 connected to the mac.
I cannot get the printer to print from the PC.
I know they see each other as I am able to access the PC files from my MAC.
I am in the process of making the switch so if you wouldn't mind dummy up any suggestions.
I must be missing a major step??

Major step - on the PC, use a color postscript driver (Apple Color LaserWriter is good). This sends postscript from PC to Mac - the Mac print queue expects postscript input.

  • Home Sharing between iOS 4.3.1 and OSX 10.4.11

I can't get home sharing to work between my iPad1 running iOS 4.3.1 and my iMac
running OS X 10.4.11 and using iTunes 9.2. Home sharing is set up on my iMac and I can run Remote from my iPad. I've entered my Apple ID info in the iPod portion of Settings on the
iPad. But when I go to the iPod app on my iPad, when I tap on "Library" nothing
happens. I don't see my iMac iTunes library come up under "Shared Libraries".
As a matter of fact nothing at all happens or comes up when I tap on "Library".
Does Home Sharing work with iTunes 9? Do you need iTunes 10? And can you only
get iTunes 10 with OSX 10.5?

Wanted to add my .02 experience.
New iPad 2, iOs 4.3.1 (got it and did that yesterday).
One mac running 10.6.5, iTunes 10.2.1 - home share, and iPad2 Remote - works fine.  Remote sees that home share immediately and it is working well.
One mac running 10.5.7, iTunes 10.2.2.... Remote cannot handle it.  Not only do I not see the home share "share" on the iPad, but when I try do do the manual route of 'Add a Library', the errors are bizarre!  It starts by taking a loooong time to spin and shows simply "Looking for" as the message on the iPad.  Then it fails, and says "Not found".  That's it!  I don't think it is the router, as the 10.5 mac is on the same subnet though it is not wireless.  I checked firewall stuff - it's not on.  And since it works perfectly on the 10.6 mac, I know home sharing and the way I set things up works.
Stumped on this.  Since I don't know if there are any logs to see on the iPad, I have no idea how to approach this one.  But it clearly does not work with 10.5, at least for me.

  • Internet sharing between OS X 10.4 and XP

I am trying to share a dial-up connection on my PowerBook G4 running 10.4 with a Dell running XP over ethernet. I realize this scenario has been discussed by others on this forum, and I have read those posts (a whole bunch of them, anyway). But the steps don't seem to be working.
What I have in Network preferences on my Mac (all manual settings):
    IP Address: 192.168.2.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: (blank or 192.168.2.1—same results either way)
    DNS Servers: blank
    TCP/IP Properties on my Dell:
    - Obtain an IP address automatically
    - Obtain DNS server address automatically
    which automatically yields:
    Address Type: Assigned by DHCP
    IP Address: 192.168.2.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1
    DHCP Server: 192.168.2.1
    DNS Server: 192.168.2.1
    Mac firewall is temporarily OFF
It all looks right to me ... but it doesn't work. The Mac's internet access works fine, of course. But on the Windows computer nothing will open in a browser. If I ping, for example, apple.com I get:
Pinging apple.com [17.254.3.183] with 32 bytes of data:
    Request timed out. (repeats)
From the ping results, it appears that somehow the DNS name is getting resolved into an IP address, but that's as far as it gets for the Windows machine. Typing an IP address into the Windows browser brings up nothing but an error (cannot find server). Other interesting facts: File networking works both ways; I can access both computer's shares from both computers. From the Windows computer I can ping the Mac, but if I try to ping itself (192.168.2.2) it doesn't work. On the Mac I can ping both the Windows computer and the Mac itself (192.168.2.1) successfully.
I had previously set this up the other way around: the Windows computer was sharing its dial-up connection with the Mac over ethernet. And perversely that setup was a cakewalk. It worked like a charm and never gave me any trouble. But now my Windows modem has apparently died, and so I thought I'd just try it the other way around. No dice. What is wrong?
I am using OS X Tiger 10.4.8, and Windows XP Professional.
