No, do you? The OP asked if the drive can be connected.  It can but there may be limitations. Saying you cannot connect an NTFS drive is not correct, it is only partly correct. I know you know that.
Have a nice day.

    Luis,
Just to clarify one point…in order for Streamclip to convert the MTS I believe a plug-in like the AVCCAM QuickTime importer from Panasonic needs to be installed. (Credit David McClain over at the FCS boards for that info.)

  • Can I just plug in my PC formatted Hard Drives (Vista) to my new MacBook Pro?

I am a new Macbook Pro owner.  Have existing PC (Vista OS) workstation and Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion OS.  All my photos are on PC formatted external hard drives.  I have Adobe Lightroom loaded on both PC and MAC and would like to access the PC formatted external hard drive from either PC or MAC.
Do I need to download any special application to allow my MacbookPro to connect, read, and write to these drives?  (I haven't tried to plug them in yet - afraid to damage them)
Do I need to reformat my external drives to a Mac format to make them run better?
thanks in advance for the help.

What's done is done and your probably full(ish) drives in NTFS format will remain as they are. When you add a new one to the collection, might want to investigate formatting it in ExFAT format instead. OS X will happily write on it as will Windoze. And you have the advantage over the ancient Fat32 format that you can create and store files over 4GB in size safely and without data corruption.

  • I threw out 24 time machine backups from an external hard drive into my desktop trash and now I can't empty my trash.

I threw out 24 time machine backups from an external hard drive into my IMac desktop trash and now I can't empty my trash.

Since you didn't mention what type of error message you were seeing, I'm going to guess on what is happening.
I'm guessing that since you threw away Time Machine backups, that Time Machine is probably active on your Mac. There is a chance then that the files you tossed are marked as in use. You can't delete files that are in use.
Try turning Time Machine off, then restart your Mac. Then try deleting them again.
Once done, turn Time Machine back on.

  • Can I use my old external hard drive?

I have my old external hard drive from my old PC computer. Is there a way to convert my files on my hard drive without deleting them. Or do I just need to get a new hard drive?

Depending on how old the hard drive is, it may be fine. If it's a USB hard drive and formatted correctly, then you may be able to use some of the files if they're cross-platform. For example, Microsoft Word and Excel files will work on both Windows and Mac.
Best to just plug it in and see what happens. If your iMac can't read the drive format, then you can either get a new drive or re-format the old one (which will erase all your old files). But if the drive shows up on the desktop, then you may be able to use the old files.
If the drive doesn't show up, you could use a Windows computer to put the files on a CD-R or something to transfer them to your new computer.
Lots of options, really depends on how things are formatted.

  • How do I replace my old external hard drive with a new larger external hard drive and move my music so itunes can find it?

How do I move music from an old external hard drive to a new external hard drive and have itunes find it?

If you have a time machine back up of your current drive you can do this
Shut down your computer, install the new drive. While the computer is off plug in the external hard drive that you have your time machine back up on. Hold Option key while the computer turnes on, let go of the option key once you get a grey screen. Shortly after you'll see  a list of bootable drives, select the one that has your time machine back up on it and boot into that drive.
From there go into disk utility, format your new drive too, osx extended journaled ( I think, double check that, its been awhile since ive had to do this), hit format
Exit disk utility and then you can use time machine to copy all your exisit data to the new hhd and then your pretty much done.
There is also a program called Carbon Cloner that will do esentially the same thing however I've never uesed it.

Depending on which email client software you use
the files should be in 'your home folder' library, esp.
if you use Mail application.... ~/Library/Mail
Since you don't specify what mail application,
that would most be associated with the file.
I notice there are some items to the right of your post
where it says "more like this' so that may be worth a
look to see if similar issues were answered. Also, the
Help viewer in your system is a searchable database.
Seems that google also brings up fair information, too.
Do you have a complete bootable clone of your entire
Mac system on an externally enclosed hard disk drive?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Can't unlock a folder on my external hard drive.

1.) I have an old Seagate drive that just now will not let me access some data that is stored there. When I try to access the Seagate the Mac says "You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can not save changes to the disk. Back up the data and reformat the disk". I have a locked folder with my itunes library there that now I can not unlock. When I do folder info and try to change the access it will not let me after I put in the pass word. Can I copy to a new drive and unlock the folder there and access my music?
2.) What is the best external Hard Drive for my iMac?
I am looking for a 500 GB to 1TB Firewire 800 external Hard drive to store my itunes music, Pictures and Logic 8 files. I will want to use the drive to access these files in real time not to just backup and store. Any help ASAP would be great.

Sure sounds like the drive is in windows format (NTFS) which is probably why you can read and copy the data, but can not write to it.
    see > http://www.macworld.com/article/51972/2006/07/ww_drives.html
The Seagate drive will work find with your iMac if you backup the data on it to either a windows system or your iMac, then reset the Partition Map Scheme and Format using Disk Utility and then copy the data back to it..

Most all of the newer name brand drive will work just fine, Seagate/Maxtor, WD, Lacie and OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Models. Again most will need the Partitioned set to GUID Partition Table and Formatted to Mac OS X Extended for Time Machine, backup clones and files larger than 4GB.
Most newer drives are shipped MS-DOS Fat-32 which both the OS X and windows systems can read and write to, but again there is a 4GB file limitation that could give you a problem with large Logic 8 files.
The OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro's and Lacie's are highly recommended by folks in the forum.

  • Can I put my library on an external hard drive and use it between two computers?

Can I put my library on an external hard drive and use it between two computers? I have two MBP; I will refer to one as computer A and to the other as computer B. I would like to be able to plug in my external hard drive, boot up iTunes, and if there were any changes made to the library previous to its last time accessed on this compluter, they show up on that computer, regardless of being imported on the other.
A hypothetical example: I import three albums called 1, 2, and 3 on computer A over a week or so. I take the external hard drive and plug it into computer B. The entire library which was visible on A, is visible on B, including albums 1, 2, and 3.
Is this possible? If so, what files need to be copied onto the external? I'm trying some different combinations, trial and error basically. Hopefully someone knows and can answer before I mess up my library. I also want to do this to free up space on my computer. All importing will be done from disc.

iTunes/Preferences/Advanced : point your iTunes to the new location of the Library.
Set "Share on local network" in the Sharing tab, and you or everyone on the local network can play your music.
You make a backup first of the Library.
Move the follwing to the new location:
    /Users/your username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
    have fun.

I want to take files from my PC (using a Seagate external hard drive) then plug this Seagate External hard drive into my Mac Book Pro and move the files from the Seagate External Hard drive onto my Time Capsule. I do not want to put these files on my Mac. How do I do this? Where do I put these files on my Time Capsule? Will it affect the functioning of my Time Capsule?

Mixing files with data is not always great idea.
    See info here.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.

  • How can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open?

how can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open? I just wan't to make a backup to my pictures not my entire computer so how does Time Machine work on that?

you could also clone the drive or volume, or just some of the user folders. look for carbon copy cloner, then enable the "use checksum to insure file integrity."
you can have multiple iPhoto Library catalogues in different locations.
Continue to use TimeMachine and make sure it has 350% or more capacity than your system and data.

I have so many photos on my Mac I only have 1G of memory left.  How can I move the photos to the external hard drive that is plugged into my iMac.

1GB? It's a miracle your Mac is running at all!
This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Mac

I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Machine, there are only about 5 backups recorded on the ext. hard drive. There were many more before. Any idea what happened and if I have to buy a new back up hard drive?

    Hallo  Kieth ,
I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles, descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
Thanks for your interest and advice.

  • Can I install a program on an External Hard Drive?

I have an 500 GB external hard drive that I attach to my MBP to store movies and my aperture picture libraries. When I first got it, I created three Mac OS Extended (journaled) partitions, one for movies, one for pictures and the other one for “extras”. I’d like to install Adobe Photoshop on my external hard drive, so I’d like to know if there is a way to make any one of my three partitions operate as if they were a system partition. Can I install an application in an external hard drive? Can I run an application from an external hard drive? Which formatting solution could help me achieve what I want? Is this even possible? Any suggestions?

There are many applications that are happy to be installed on a partition other than the boot partition. However, if the Adobe Photoshop installer does no present you with that option I wouldn't. You could always copy it across post-installation to see if it will work. Updating my present issues.
