The Powerline adapters mentioned by edex67 are your only hope if you cannot run an Ethernet cable.
Even if the home and office are on the same electrical circuit, you won't really know how well the Powerline adapters might work until you actually try them out at your location.
For that reason, it would be a good idea to understand the store's return policy before you buy.

I start the AIR in Target Disc mode, then start the iMac and run the Migration Assistant and follow the instructions as outlined here. The iMac just churns and never does come up with the AIR's hard drive.
Both machines are running Mountain Lion and all software is up to date.
Ideas?Which are you migrating FROM and which TO? The FROM computer should be booted into TDM.

I need to get internet to both the house and my office, which is in a separate building approx 20m from the house. I was advised by Apple to buy an Airport Express, set it up on one or other building, and connect wirelessly to the other. Tried that, but couldn't get a reliable signal.
I was then advised to buy another Airport Express and use it as an expander in the other building. Trouble is, i can't get a reliable wireless signal between the two Expresses, so it keeps dropping the connection, and is slow when it is connected.
I rang Apple again and was told that i could try a third Airport Express between the two existing ones, but that is impossible as there is only outdoors between the two.
It would be very difficult and expensive to get an ethernet cable between the two buildings (have to cut through concrete etc), and I see from the discussion forums that an Airport Extreme has the same wireless signal as an Express, so replacing one of the Expresses with an Extreme seems unlikely to resolve the problem. I used an ethernet cable between my iMac and Time Capsule for the initial backup. Now that initial backup is concluded, can I assume I can simply unplug the Time Capsule from my computer without any glitches and Time Capsule will then run wirelessly. Is this assumption correct?

Yes, if the computer will be able to receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
I did not disable wireless. So I assume the backups are occurring both with the ethernet and wirelessly.
It is inot possible to have both an "active" Ethernet and "active" wireless signal simultaneously. If an Ethernet connection is established, your computer will default to the Ethernet connection. If the Ethernet cable is unplugged, the computer will revert to the wireless connection.
I also show 2 wireless networks available through Airport. Shouldn't there only be one now?
You have a simultaneous dual band Time Capsule. That means that it will always be providing both a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz network.
I named my new network the same name as the old network. This enabled all of our devices to continue with their connection without entering the new network and/or passwords; however, I am afraid this may pose problems in the future somehow. Any input on this issue as well?
Things should be fine. Devices will connect to the best signal.....either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz....based on their capabilties and location in relation to the Time Capsule. -
Can this be done? Airport extreme connected wireless in extend mode to connect a wireless Mac Pro with an ethernet cable from the extended airport extreme.
This will work.....IF....you also have an Apple AirPort router configured to provide your wireless network.
In other words, you need to have two Apple AirPort routers to extend a wireless network.
When the AirPort Extreme is configured to "extend" the wireless of the "main" AirPort, it will provide more wireless coverage and the Ethernet ports are enabled, so you could connect your Mac Pro to any of the Ethernet ports and use that as a network and Internet connection. -

I am trying to connect my new Yamaha amp to my 5 year old "g" airport express to access Internet radio via ethernet cable, my internet runs from a adsl modem to a 5 gen airport extreme "n" then wireless to the express, both hooked up together ok but can not get the Internet working through the Ethernet cable, I have also tried other devices on the same ethernet cable with no success. Do I Need to upgrade to a new generation airport express for this to work??

Yes. The older Express does not have the Ethernet feature that you need. -

It will work one time and the next nothing internet related will load. I have to actually shut the iPad down and then restart it. It works then but the next time I have the same problem. It sees my wifi connection. It like it won't use it. What's going on?
Your mistake was entering your WiFi address. Forget the network, then let the phone find it on its own. Your router should then assign an IP address. It's a good idea to reboot the router before doing this to assure that all services in it are working.

trying to connect time capsule to macbook air with the ethernet cable in the WAN port but the airport utility doesn't detect it but when i put it in the LAN one it does but it doesn't let me configure
any ideas?Isn't it fun trying to do things without an ethernet cable direct to the computer.. Apple sell a usb to ethernet adapter cable fairly cheap.. makes life a lot easier having something to do hard connections.. or as hard as usb can manage.
Since you have to access the TC by wireless .. press and hold the reset button on the TC for about 10sec until front led flashes rapidly.. don't worry about the ethernet cable.. leave it disconnected.
Now click on the airport symbol and join another network. The TC should revert to its home name.. which will be a combo of Time Capsule and its MAC address. There is no wireless security and you can do the setup. -
ipad is connected to the computer however doesn't show up in the menu, I'm trying to restore it but am concerned that it will restore the iphone and not the ipad. any suggestions?

This is a pretty basic question, but I'm not really sure what the correct answer is.
I use a Time Capsule as my WiFi unit in my house (I have a cable internet connection---cable comes out of the wall and goes into a cable modem, and then from there, an ethernet cable goes from the cable modem into my Time Capsule).
I was told by an Apple expert that I can probably get a faster internet connection if I use an ethernet cable to connect my iMac to my Time Capsule (as opposed to using it via WiFi, as I am currently doing). I have two questions regarding this:
1) Is it true that my speed will increase?
2) How do I connect the two together? Do I just use a spare ethernet cable and plug that into the rear of my Time Capsule, and then the other end into my iMac?
I want to keep the WiFi part working, because I have other Apple devices that use WiFi (iPhone, iPad, AppleTV).

The expert is only providing half of the story. He forgot to tell you that your Internet connection speed is determined by the plan that you have with your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
This is the bottleneck on your (and my) network since your wireless connection speed capability is already much higher than your ISP can ever hope to deliver.
For example, let's say that your plan with your provider supplies 20 Mbps. Your wireless network will typically handle much higher speeds...anywhere from 100-250+ Mbps.
Yes, an Ethernet connection has yet higher speed potential than a wireless connection, but if your wireless connection speed potential is already much faster than your Internet connection can deliver, having even higher speed potential with an Ethernet connection will do nothing for your performance.
In other words, your Time Capsule (or any other router) cannot take the signal that your Internet Provider supplies and make it go faster, whether it is using wireless or Ethernet connections.
Your Internet connection speed will only be as fast as your plan allows. If you need a faster Internet connection, you will need to speak to your ISP about a faster plan.
2) How do I connect the two together? Do I just use a spare ethernet cable and plug that into the rear of my Time Capsule, and then the other end into my iMac?
Yes, that is correct. Be sure to turn off the wireless on your iMac as well since you no longer need that connection. -
imessage on my iMac has created two iMessage account both asking for Apple ID....and no option to - (delete) one of the two duplicate accounts....how can I delete one of them it just bothers me due to sign in issues....when signed into one it signs out the other and goes inactive I just wanted to delete one of them so this issue doesn't happen....why doesn't it give the option to delete ONLY these two accounts
1. Don't confuse "Apple ID" with iTunes Account ID. You can have many Apple IDs but only one iTunes account active at a time.
2. If you "changed" your iTunes account ID, you actually have 2 accounts - one under the old name plus the new name.
3. You can't merge the accounts - they remain separate. Apps purcahsed under the old account name will update ONLY WHEN THE PHONE IS SIGNED IN TO THE OLD ACCOUNT NAME and visa versa.
4. Likewise, you can sync only the apps, music, media purchased under the account the phone AND iTunes are signed in to.
