HT3275 Time Capsule Partition Issues

I just bought a 1TB portable Hard Drive (Lacie).  After formatting for MAC and partitioning the hard drive to allow for backup and to move over large files from my solid state internal hard drive, I kept getting an error telling me that I don't have the reuired amount of space to perform a full backup.  So I read partition it, and it tells me yet again that the backup is too large for the back up disk.  The backup requires 500.12 just keeps getting larger and larger.  I've remoatted it twice now making sure all data has been removed, and it still does the same thing.

There is a bug in the latest lion update.. which is 10.7.5
If so you should load the supplement.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1599
It is impossible for the backup to keep increasing beyond the size of the drive when you haven't done an initial backup..
You could also try a reset of TM.. which is growing less and less reliable of late.

Read and follow A4.. loading the widget A1 might also be useful.
Or get a third party backup software.. which is maybe a lot more reliable.

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
    https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.

  • Time Capsule connectivity issues with cable modem

I have Comcast internet service (coming through a Linksys CM100 modem, no router) plugged directly to a 2TB dual-band TimeCapsule. In the past this has been working, and the TimeCapsule has been providing internet access to three Macs, as well as backing them up. I also have an AirPort Extreme base station (not the dual-band one but not the 2003-era UFO-shaped one either) that has been connected to the TimeCapsule over house ethernet to provide wireless through the rest of the house. Last night my connection kept dropping out. I could connect to one wifi network and it would not work, then I would connect to the other and it would work for a while before stopping. I have disconnected everything and then replugged only the cable modem and my TimeCapsule. When ethernet is plugged directly into my iMac from the modem, I get an internet connection without issue. When I plug it into the TimeCapsule, it reports an internet connectivity error. It says it gets no IP address, and no DHCP setting that I provide it with alleviates this message.
I'd be gratful for any suggestions on how to fix this issue. I don't really want to wipe the TimeCapsule completely, as it contains our backups to last July.

Because cable modems associate and "remember" the device with which they have established a connection, they need a complete reset whenever you change the device that is immediately connected to them.
Push the reset button, If present, on your modem
    Power off the modem
Pull the battery if it is easily accessible
Power off everything else on the network, order if not important
    Wait at least 15 minutes
Make sure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the Time Capsule
Power up the modem and let it run 2-3 minutes by itself
Power up the Time Capsule the same way
Power up each of your other devices about a minute apart
Check for proper operation the network.

  • Time Capsule & partition

We got a new Time Capsule and I'm stumped on how to partition it so half is for Time Machine for backup and the other for extra storage. When I open disk utility it only sees the backup and not the Time Capsule itself. I see the drive for our Mini and the cd/dvd drive but the only other thing listed as a drive is the backup that I ran the first time when we got the Time Capsule. I must have over looked something in setting up the TC or I should have partitioned it in the setup. Thanks for any help.

Smokerz, thank you for your reply. Let me see if I got this straight. I would need to physically pull the drive from the TC and hook it to a Mac Pro via usb or with a firewire or put it in the Mac Pro to partition it? I can't hook it to my Mini with usb or firewire without pulling the drive? Thanks

  • Time capsule partition without deleting the data?

I have a Time Capsule already with data and would like to set a limited space for backups. Is it possible to partition a Time Capsule (or create an image) without deleting the data it already has? Can anyone provide a step-by-step or tutorial?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

  • Time Capsule download issues with Windows 7

    Hello together
My problem is as follows: upload to Time Capsule with two PCs running on Windows 7 (both 32 and 64 bit) and a Mac Book Pro is working without any problems occuring. TC and the two PCs are in the same workgroup and PCs are connected via WIFI in private mode.
Download from TC to Mac Book Pro works without problems. But in contrast to that, when downloading with the two Windows7-based PCs the connecting is breaking off all the time and the message "Network error" will be displayed. In order to get a new connection to TC the power plug must be unplugged and replugged again. Do you have any advice what to do? Thanks very much in advance.

Are you using SMB compatible names for the TC and wireless.. short, no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.. If not do so?
I also recommend using fixed channels and maybe fixed mode. Lock up as much as possible as the PC does not deal as well as the Mac with the auto band, channel and mode switches.
I am not sure what you mean by this..
PCs are connected via WIFI in private mode.
    Please explain a bit more.
Windows wireless drivers are often terrible.. many people have fixed issues by using a more recent driver direct from the wireless card manufacturer.. this is important.. not windows default driver,, not computer manufacturer supplied one.. eg intel card then get latest intel driver from intel.
Are you running bonjour for windows on the PC's??
Try using static IP address which also might help.. windows did have issues with dhcp in the past.

  • Time Capsule Partitioning or HD space questions

I recently purchased a 1TB Time Capsule about a week ago and I have my Macbook and Mac Mini backing up to the Time Capsule currently. Macbook hard drive is 320GB and Mac Mini is 120 GB.
Now that those are backing up to the Time Capsule I want to start moving files (tv shows, music, etc.) to the Time Capsule from my MY Book 500GB. I know I can create a folder and start from there on the Time Capsule Drive but how do I know how much space i have to work with? My backups will keep filling up until it reaches the limits of the drive capacity as always, but since it isn't partitioned what will happen when i want to add more files (shows and music) to the folder on the Time Capsule? Won't it just read DISK FULL at the point where the backups have taken over the hard drive?
Wouldn't a quick and easy way be to parition the drive say to 35% Macbook 35% Mini 30% misc files?
I know I can hook up my MY Book 500GB external and store files there but I kind of want to phase the external drive out of my network setup and have the TC be my main hub of information.
Anyone have any solutions or Ideas for me.

    Welcome to the discussions!
+Wouldn't a quick and easy way be to parition the drive say to 35% Macbook 35% Mini 30% misc files?+
The problem here is that it would neither be quick nor easy to partition the TC drive because you must remove it and place it in an enclosure to do so. On top of that, this will void the warranty.
Suggest that you look at Disk Utility to create a "disk image" on your TC disk. You can create as many images as you like and reserve a set amount of space for each image. Time Machine will leave these images alone when it starts to look for more space for its backups.

  • HT3275 Time Capsule. Intermittently get failure message

    Using Time Capsule for backup.
My Mac Pro running OS 10.6.8 doesn't have a problem.
With my MacBook Pro running OS 10.7.5 I intermittenly get the message:
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The backup disc image "/Volumes/Data/TomsLaptop.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).
The disc image Time Machine Backups is mounted. It contains the folder Backups.backupdb, which contains the folder TomsLaptop and this contains the backup folders according to date and time as well as an alias called Latest.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

a simple reboot of the TC is usually enough to fix it.

I am getting an error while backing up with Time Capsule.
The message: "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/XXXXXXXX’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use."
    What does it mean?

It means you are more than likely running Mountain Lion (or Lion).
And your Networking has now reached the limits of ML.. ie wet string.
Reboot the whole network.. start in order modem.. tc.. clients. With 2min gap between.

  • MacBook Pro and Time Capsule connection issue

I have an issue where all the devices in my house can connect and work with my Time Capsule, except for my MacBook Pro. Everything has worked in the past(including my MBP), but last weekend my Time Capsule died, I went to an Apple store and got a refurb unit.
After setting up the new unit, every device can attach and use it, except for my MBP. It appears to attach, but says that I don't have an internet connection. When I look at the attached clients on the Time Capsule, it shows all the devices by name, except mine is shown by MAC address.
I have the wifi settings set the same as the other computers, etc., which do work. I can take my MBP to other places that have wifi, and it works just fine. It also doesn't work if I plug it into one of the LAN connections(Ethernet) on the Time Capsule. The other computers will work on wifi or the direct connection.
After taking my computer to another place and using their wifi, mine worked when I brought it back home. This lasted for a few days, then it just stopped again this morning.
I have restarted, shutdown, etc., the Time Capsule and my MBP many, many times.
Time Capsule 512MB original unit, firmware(7.6)
    MacBook Pro 17", 9 months, 10.7.2
Other devices: two iMacs, 3 iPhones, 2 iPads 2's, and an Apple TV.
Anyone else having similar issues, any suggestions?

  • Time Capsule connection issues

I connected my time capsule to a new internet at my college. The internet works, and the green light is solid. My computer and iPhone 5 say however, "No Airport base stations have been found. Airport Utility will continue searching." I have backed up this same computer, but in August 2012 when I lived somewhere else. Any suggestions?

You haven't given us enough info.
When you plug into your college system you must double NAT.. because the college will only give you one private IP address. The TC must be on a different IP address range. If the computer still cannot find the TC
    1. do a full factory reset and start over.
    2. Ensure IPv6 is set to link local only on the computer.
    3. Use all short names on the TC. no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Not the names the airport utility will suggest.
    4. Use WPA2 Personal security with a password of 10-20 characters pure alphanumeric.
    5. Manually mount the TC in the computer using Finder. Go, Connect to Server.
Type in AFP://TCname.local or AFP://10.0.1.1 (Where TCname is the new short name.. local is correct default domain or the actual IP address.. 10.0.1.1. is default.)
The computer will attempt to discover the network resource. When the password is requested store it in the keychain.
    6. Reset TM in the computer.
    A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    7. If the iphone still doesn't work set fixed channels for 2.4ghz and try 11, 6, 1 in that order. Maybe 8 as well if your college is saturated with people running their own wireless AP. I would go further and set the 5ghz to a different name to 2.4ghz and attempt to use that. There are more channels available and less interference issues.
The college probably has rules against using your own AP for precisely this reason.

  • Dual Band Time Capsule - networking issues

I upgraded from an original Time Capsule that had been running successfully on the 5Ghz band with firmware 7.4.1.
I changed my original TC out and setup everything from scratch so that the DB TC was connected to my cable modem and provided the DHCP leases. Set it to provide N only services on 5Ghz and b/g on 2.4 (I tried the automatic and the manual settings during troubleshooting). Guest networking was turned on and was serving up on the 2.4Ghz channel.
Next I moved my original TC to another room, extended the new DB TC on the 5Ghz network and everything seemed fine.
But then I noticed that whenever I started to run a TM backup (over airport or wireless) that eventually my original TC would seem to go deaf. I could not access the internet through it. However, Airport utility could still see it. On further examination I realized it had lost its IPv4 DHCP address and was only displaying an IPv6 address in the Airport Utility.
After many isolation steps and no success, I decided to move the old TC into the same room as the new DB, connect them via ethernet and turn off the wireless on my old TC altogether to prevent interference. That seemed to work. Until a TM backup was kicked off (btw - all backups right now are to the original TC not the new DB).
Finally, I disconnected the original TC altogether and just let the DB TC run everything (but still I was not backing up to it). Now the new TC by itself seems to stop allowing access to the internet. Internal network is fine. What is really odd, is that rebooting the DB TC sometimes doesn't seem to help. However, reseting the cable modem does (for a little while).
I switched back to my original TC now and everything is working flawlessly again including being able to run TM backups to it and no loss of internet access.
Any ideas? I have already exchanged it once. I have reloaded firmware (7.4.1). I have set up everything from scratch. And still it is really flaky.
    Thanks in advance.

5 GHz signals are capable of faster speeds, but you always have to give up something to gain something else. In the case of 5 GHz, in order to gain higher speed, you must give up distance and penetration power with 5 GHz.
Bottom line...5 GHz signals are significantly weaker than 2.4 GHz signals. Your Mac is looking for the strongest, best quality signal, so it connects to the stronger 2.4 GHz band at the upstairs location.
For most of us, 5 GHz is pretty much of a line-of-sight deal. If your Mac has a clear look at the Time Capsule, and it is relatively close to the Time Capsule,  it will likely connect to 5 GHz.
Otherwise, if the signal must pass through a few walls, or a ceiling (which is much thicker than a wall) the Mac is very likely going to connect at 2.4 GHz.
If you take the Mac downstairs and give it a clear look at the Time Capsule from 10-15 feet or so,  does it connect at 5 GHz?

    Restarting is restarting.
It will make no difference whether you do this using AirPort Utility or manually.

Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit
Click the Base Station menu item at the very top of the screen....in the line as the Apple icon....

  • HT3275 time capsule and ? ? ? on my desktop instead of Apps!

I added hardware to my laptop and then restored with my time capsule back up.  However instead of having Word icon it has question mark?!? same for my printer and powerpoint! How do I get this apps to work again?

The brute-force approach is to drag the question-mark icons out of the Dock, then open the Applications folder (and subfolder, if necessary) and drag the application icons to the Dock.
If you can't find the applications in the Applications folder, then you may have configured Time Machine to exclude those.  In that case you'll have to reinstall them.

Ah, that's a new wrinkle to me.  I haven't tested the Server product, but there are a number of differences.  As far as I can tell, the firmware update solved this for most, but not all, users of standard OSX.
Are you still on Snow Leopard server?  It's quite different from later versions, I understand.
Have you tried selecting the base station, then Base Station > Restart via Aiport Utility's menubar?  That still disconnects everyone, but might work by itself.
Otherwise, sorry, but I'm out of my comfort zone.
Hopefully one of the networking gurus will have an idea or two.
