HT4260 Can I use a Netgear Universal WN3000RP Wi-Fi Range Extender?

Can I use a Netgear Universal WN3000RP Wi-Fi Range Extender with my Airport Express to extend the range?
If so, is there anything that I need to do in order to configure my computer for it to work properly?
Are there any disadvanges to doing this (speed, signal strength)?
Thanks.

You always want to stay with the same manufacturer if possible for your wireless needs to insure compatibility. If you have a recent version AirPort Express now, using another Express to "extend" the wireless signal will usually work well if there are not too many obstructions for the signal to overcome.
We cannot say if the Netgear device might work for you or not.....it was not compatible with Apple when we tried a sample a few months ago.....but with wireless, you never really know.
Let's just say that the product may not be as "universal" as the title might suggest. There are likely some footnotes in the Netgear materials that their product will not work with devices that use "proprietary" settings, as Apple does.
If you try the Netgear device, let us know how it works for you.

  • Can I use my 2010 AirPort Extreme as a range extender with a new AirPort Extreme?

I want to use an existing AirPort Extreme (2010 model) with a new AirPort Extreme to extend the range and signal strength into a shop. They are different designations, one n and the other ac. Are they compatible. I need to know before I buy the new router.

The new AirPort Extreme will provide an ac,n,g,b compatible wireless signal.
The existing AirPort Extreme can be configured to extend the n,g,b signal, but it cannot extend the ac signal.

  • How can I use my Netgear R7000 AC router to store my i devices' backups?

    Hello
I just purchased a netgear r7000 AC router.
I have connected an external HD to the USB 3.0 port.
How can I use this HD to do my i devices backups instead of using iCloud?
    Thanks

You would have to backup using iTunes, not iCloud.  You might then be able to create a junction link to your new folder location as explained here: http://www.copytrans.net/support/how-to-change-itunes-backup-location/.  I haven't personally tried this but it looks like it should work, at least for a local drive.  Not sure about a network drive.
Edit: now that I look at the wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS_junction_point), it says this only works on local drives, not networked drives.  If that's the case I doubt that this would be possible.

  • Can i use my netgear stora with a macbook pro?

thinking of purchasing a mac book pro 15",would i be able to use my netgear stora with it?
if i can ,is it easy to set up.
big jump for me moving from microsoft to apple ,trying to find out as much as i can ,

Yes, it has a NEXXTECH PS/2 adapter to UPS which I connect to my old laptop (emachines). Is it compatible with Apple?
If that Nexxtech adapter converts to USB, it probably will work fine for alpa and numerics.
What sometimes happens is a Mac does not recognize a keyboard, so it will ask you to type some specific characters, like z and m and . If you get lucky, it will recognize the layout and assign the keys correctly and all will work. Command and Option may take some playing around to get them straight. Some shortcut combinations may never work properly.

  • HT4260 Can I use a new airport express to extend a network?

If I am using an AirPort Extreme as my main wifi, but it is in bridge mode because I already have another router setup in dhcp on my network, can I use an airport express to extend my network, but use it hard wired?

can I use an airport express to extend my network, but use it hard wired?
Yes, assuming that you are asking about a new Express, or the 802.11n version.
This is very easy to do with the Mountain Lion operating system that you have.
(The "roaming network" link above assumes that you are using the Leopard or Snow Leopard operating system...although the general information there is good).
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express.
Power up the AirPort Express and wait a full minute
Click the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and look for the heading of New AirPort Base Station. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express there
AirPort Setup will open automatically and take a minute to analyze your network and then announce that the Express will be setup to "extend" your AirPort Extreme network
Enter a device name for the Express and click Next
AirPort Setup will take another minute to configure the Express
When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done
    That's it.

  • Can I use a NETGEAR WRG614v6 as a wireless extender for my AE?

My modem is connected up to my AExpress but the signal is weak around some parts of the house. I have an old NETGEAR WRG614v6 router and was wondering wether i could use this as a wireless extender or repeater and have it just plugged into the power, no DSL cables in it, just sharing the AE's signal. Is this possible to do or am I better off buying another AE or even an extreme? I've searched all forums possible to try and help me and even tried YouTube but had no luck so far. Can anyone help or tell me how to do this?
    Cheers, Stathi.

According to wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WirelessDistributionSystem) your netgear doesn't support WDS, which is needed to extend a network
Your cheapest bet would be to buy another AX and extend it that way...

I'm either really stupid, or my HH is not performing as I would expect.
The firewall doesn't seem to want to trun off, port forwarding appears to be intermittent, DMZ doesn't seem to work as documented.
Is it possible to switch back to my old router ? I realise that I need to keep the infinity modem thingy in place.
    Any thoughts >

  • Can I use the WAN port on my AirPortExpress to extend my WiFi from my Time Capsule?

OK folks, here's what I want to do.  I have a Time Capsule not only supplying WiFi, but also connected to the ethernet in my home.  What I want to do is use the ethernet to connect my AirPort Express and extend the WiFi signal.  I've tried various settings configurations and the closest I get is a duplicate network.  This causes problems for Home Sharing of iTunes accounts to my 2 Apple TV's, one that is connected to ethernet and the other WiFi.  Plus, it seems to confuse our iPhones and another WiFi computer from time to time.
So can this even be done, is there another option I'm missing? We are trying to use this in a room for the AirPlay feature and the original WiFi signal drops pretty regularly, so moving it closer to the TC is a last resort.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi - if what you want to do is have the Express produce a wireless network with a new name then you need to configure it in the following way - it should be set to connect via ethernet in bridge mode and set to "create a wireless network" with a new name and password of your choice - if you need specific steps let me know.

  • Can I use the airport card in my macro to extend a network?

I've looked into extending a wireless network using an airport express, etc, but I was wondering if I could use an airport card in my Mac Pro to do this as well?
I realize I should be able to 'share' as a hotspot, but would prefer to extend an existing (or new) network instead.
cable modem----> airport or TC -----> Ethernet ----> Mac Pro -----> internal airport card (extends wifi network on airport or TC)
    Thanks,

System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing ...
can allow you to declare that your Mac Pro now includes simple Router functions that offers WiFi service to nearby devices. It has some limitations, but DOES offer DHCP to those devices.
When configured in this fashion, the Address assigned to the port on your Mac Pro is not a meaningful indicator of whether it is working properly -- that will be a self-assigned IP address in the range 169.254.xxx.yyy. The important address is the one provided to the WiFi devices, which is often 192.168.1.1.
Only the base channels 1 to 11 will be offered. Only WEP encrytion is offered. So if you already have lots of nearby Routers, this option is not that helpful.

  • Can I use the airport express as a repeater/range expander but without being connected to the modem with the ethernet cable?

I have a mac pro (2010 mid) to set up the airport

My 2003 Airport Extreme I guess does not provide this "enable extension of other Wireless Device" option in Airport Untility under "Wireless",  because it is too old?
Correct. You will need one of the "square" AirPort Extreme versions if you want to do this.
Another question, do I need to buy a new Airport Extreme to be able to extend my Wi-Fi signal with the New Airport Express I just bought?
Yes, or another new AirPort Express. But, you cannot connect a hard drive to an AirPort Express. You can with an AirPort Extreme in case you were planning to add a hard drive.
One last question, I believe I understood that if I have the new Airport Extreme and use it with my Airport Express to extend the Wi-Fi Signal, I will be able to do this without my DSL Ethernet cable connected to the Airport Express?
The DSL cable will need to be connected to the AirPort that you designate as the "main" router on the network....assuming that you want to be able to connect to the Internet.
The other AirPort will connect using wireless only....assuming that it is located where it can get a good wireless signal.

  • HT3546 can you use your wireless modem and a airport to extend wifi or do you need two airports?

    please help

If you require a wireless connection, then you would need a second AirPort to accomplish this. The first AirPort would connect to the existing wireless modem via Ethernet. It would be configured as a bridge and also configured to be extended by the second AirPort. You can use any combination of 802.11n AirPort models for either of the AirPort to configure an extended network. Finally, you will want to disable the wireless radio in your wireless modem to prevent Wi-Fi interference between the two wireless networks.

  • Can I use my extreme as a wifi range extender? my dsl is a westel madem/wifi combo.

can I use my airport exteme as a wifi range extender? my dsl is a westel modem/wifi combo.

You can use the AirPort Extreme to extend the wireless network if the network has been created by another Apple router.
The AirPort Extreme would not be compatible for the purpose of extending the wireless from the Westell gateway using wireless only.
If you could connect the AirPort Extreme to the Westell device using an Ethernet connection, you have some other options. Post back if you need more info on this type of setup.

  • Can i use airport extreme as wifi range extender in conjunction with a Linksys AE4500 router

can i use airport extreme base station as wifi range extender in conjunction with a Linksys AE4500 router

If you are trying to "extend" using wireless only......Apple tells us that their "extend a wireless network" feature is designed to only work with other Apple routers.
So, in order to use your AirPort Extreme as an extender, you would need to have another Apple router.....an AirPort Express, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Extreme as the main base station.
I haven't tested the specific Linksys model that you have, but have owned and worked with several other Linksys models, none of which were compatible with Apple for the purpose that you ask about....so I would have to say that it is extremely unlikely that your model would be compatible with the AirPort Extreme.

  • Using AirPort Express as a WiFi Range Extender

I have a Westell Versalink 327 W combination DSL Modem and Wireless Router downstairs hooked up to an iMac via ethernet cable. Can I use the AirPort Express as a WiFi Range Extender upstairs? Any issues I should be aware of?

I suggest that you check with DLink on this as using the same manufacturer will always give you the best chance at compatibility.
    Maybe this would do it:

  • Can I use any USB-Ethernet adapter, or do I need to buy the Apple part?

I'm about to get an Air and do the migration from my old PowerBook.  Can I use the Netgear USB-Ethernet adapter for the Air, or do I need to buy a new Apple part?

Little update for the usb to ethernet adapter is in order. Both adapters are producing Gigabit ethernet max. Keep in mind that new macbook air has the usb 3 version ports at 5 Gigabit internal speed where Thunderbolt has 10 Gigabit per chanel internal capacity. In ether case more than suficient to provide Gigabit ethernet output. Nither one will push more than that out to the ethernet. In my case the decission was made by availability. I wanted the thunderbolt adapter for the sake of keeping up with the technology but there was none on the shelf.
    Just my two cents
