Why wont apple let you disable or unregister from gamecenter?! Iv done everything I can but games log into it reactivated its notifications aswell. It auto logs me back in...I want apple to let you unregister completely why not?? I have disabled all notifications from Gamecenter romoved all games listed, i deleted my email adress registered, i changed my user name...and loged out but games reactivate it, I also noticed it still keeps a record of your previous score and when reactivated relists all games on your handset again aswell.

I feel the same way -- I would REALLY like to remove this misbegotten piece of junk completely. I would SETTLE for being able to disable it -- although there are instructions for "disabling" it, it doesn't STAY disabled. I have followed the instructions, removed my email address (although it still uses my email address as the login and won't allow me to ACTUALLY remove it), made my profile private, then signed out... And the next time the device is powered back on, the account is logged in again and insisting on trying to connect to every game I play. So I deny access, "disable" it, sign out, etc, again... ad infinitum, ad nauseum.
When the rest of my family switched to android, I stubbornly stayed with my beloved iOS devices and my Macs, but this annoyance -- which WILL NOT go away -- almost makes me think I should reconsider. I HATE Game Center, and want it off my devices.

In Address Book, why does Apple let you create custom fields in the Template cards but not have them available for importing?

I open Address Book, go into Preferences, select Template and under the Names field (friend, assistant, father, etc) I add a custom field called "Principal".
I also add two more custom fields in the Email area.
Quit Address Book then relaunch. Add a new contact and the new custom fields, Principal, etc. are there. All good so far.
I have a Now Contact file with about 200 contacts in it. I export all fields as a Text file, Tab delimited. No problems there. With Address Book launched, select Import, pick the text file, leave Text Encoding on Automatic and click Open.
The window that shows the fields for Address Book and fields for the text file side by side opens. This is where you match up the correct fields for importing. If I go to one of the fields from the text file that I created a custom field for, click under the Address Book heading on the Do not import, scroll thru the Apple choices of fields, none of the custom fields show up. Only the original Apple ones are there. Why does Apple let you create them in the Template area but not have them available for importing? Does anyone have suggestions on getting around this?

While most likely not of interest to you, Spotlight can also tell you where the files it finds are located
Hover the mouse pointer over the name, and press Command-Option and the path to the file will be displayed.
As for opening a terminal session in the directory where a file is located, there is Applescripts that do just that as well as specific features in Lion/Mountain Lion terminal:

Why does apple let you install the update if it's just going to fail?

I got the 3GS maybe a month ago. I had issues running updates on my old iphone (the original) and used to have to go into apple's genius bar in order to do updates. I was sort of hoping that the updates would run fine on the 3GS, but 3.1.2 failed for me.
Anyways, it gave me some error code and I followed the link to kb article TS1275: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1275
From there I discovered that port 443 wasn't open on my computer and that was probably the problem. So I opened it up and I'm trying to run the update again (although so far nothing is happening).
My question is this: why would itunes let me try to run the update at all if I didn't meet the prerequisites? Since the update is obviously going to fail if port 443 is closed, why doesn't it verify that I have the port open before it tries to update?
I'm just a little peeved that I have to drive an hour to go see the geniuses (yet again).

Like create our own personalized questions, instead of their pre- determined questions. I mean, we can setup a 2step verification(terrible concept, tbh), but we cannot for whatever reason set detailedly specific questions and answers for our Apple account managed via our AppleID. Just curious asto why with all of the internet security issues lately .

When I said 'valid' answers, I meant actual words that could be remembered. I've posted on here previosuly that you should use 'fake' answers. For example, don't put in the real answer to 'What was the model of your first car?' If you've ever posted a picture of your first car on Facebook, you've just given someone a chance to get itno your account via social engineering.
So, use a weird word, like 'banana' to answer that question.
Was your favorite movie really 'Gone With the Wind'? Don't put that. Instead, put 'Paper Airplane'.
And so on.
What I meant by 'valid' was people putting in things like 'adsfhjsflkhsdflhk' as the question and then 'sdjkfghlkajh' as the answer. Or something equally dumb, as I've seen/heard before as 'What is 2+2' and the answer was... '4'. Or 'What is my maiden name/", and the answer actually being a truthful answer.
Might as well just post your Apple ID, password and credit card details online in every chat forum you can find.
I never debated that Two-Step verification was better. What I did was attempt to actually answer the question posed by the OP.

Is it the same iTunes account or different? There really is no reason that they should be different if the only thing that changed is the computer.
The iDevice is not a backup device, copy the content from the old computer to the new computer.
IF there really are two different iTunes accounts, the new computer will need to be authorized for the old account.

About the downgrade method of life hacker, if you're really not good in those things you might actually ruin your pc like my friend who tried it, she lost her wifi on her notebook, i had to help her find the installer of the driver again. this happened after she tried to install that libusb that is needed to run the application for exit recovery mode and other stuff.
Yes iOS 4.1 is out but contacts disappearing? And who knows what more problems it brings. I was even peeking around the iphone 4 forums it seems that they are not doing well either.
Anyway mine is all fine except that im afraid to use wifi or any apps that needs internet connection because everytime i do, my 3gs gets very very hot. I have already done the basic solution suggested by apple (factory reset, start from new iphone) but its still the same.
And another thing, the multitasking is getting annoying, you have to manually close all apps in the 'multitasking background' everytime you decide to quit an app. I guess they should put a 'Disable multitasking' or something like that.

If you are having problems it is NOT from 4.0; there is something else wrong with your phone. There are plenty of troubleshooting tips in the forum if you look.

NO YOU DO NOT. Those apps in the ribbon are not multitasking, they are suspended. You can ignore them and they won't hurt battery life or memory, unless they are streaming apps like Pandora.
It's amazing. For 3 years people screamed about the fact that the iPhone didn't support multitasking. Now they scream because the phone DOES multitasking. You can't win.

I'm really surprised that you were told to just wait for an update. Are you using a particular piece of software that causes this? If "application X" causes the issue then maybe they are right and you need an update to run the software normally. But let's assume that's not it unless you say differently.
Here's a couple things:
1) I get that you are upset, but don't freak out. It's not going to make the rep on the phone help you anymore.
2) Is there a mac store near you? If so, make a genius bar appt. and go there.
3) If not call Apple and tell them your problem. Calmly. Not in a "you guys won't help me!" way. Tell them you want to send it in (because you have no store close to you. If you do have a store close to you see #2) so they can fix it. Firmly but politely let them know that this is a real problem. Don't ask for a NEW computer. The fact is, you don't need a NEW computer, you need yours fixed.
4) If they do not help you then ask to speak to a supervisor and repeat.
It's very important that you stop asking for a new computer. That isn't how it works. Anywhere. You just need yours fixed. If there really is a software upgrade needed ask them to explain it to you so you understand the problem. But most importantly stay calm.

If you still have your old card listed on your account then try selecting the 'none' option and remove it and then try entering the card's details from scratch. If that doesn't work then what is the full error message that you are getting, and the card is registered to the same name and address (including format and spacing) that you have on your iTunes account ?

If it then works on your computer's iTunes but not your phone then try logging out of your account on the phone by tapping on the id in Settings > iTunes & App Stores and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' the account on it

so there is the huge virus that is spreading to myspace users via apple's quicktime. I understand that things have vulnerabilities but why is apple letting a social networking site distribute its patches? Its causing a whole brew haha haha on myspace with an anti quicktime backlash, everyone is removing quicktime for fear of catching a virus....
