HT4623 I do not have the "Software Upgrade" window in my Settings, General.  Alternative way to upgrade?

I have an IPad 2.  I tried to use Netflix and it told me that I needed to have iOS 6.1.2.  Turns out I do not have the one before that either.  I never got an alert as I did on my iphone 4s.   When I ask the how to question, apple support tells me to go to Settings, General, Software update.  Problem is I do not have software update available as a choice.  Are there alternative ways to upgrade?  Thanks.  I did notice on other discussion boards that other Netflix users are pulling their hair out since the upgrade to 6.1.2.

Settings>General>Software Update is only available in IOS 5 and above.
If you are using IOS 4, you need to connect to iTune (computer) to update software.

No. You don't. You can only update over the air if you're already running iOS 5 or higher.
If you actually read the article you linked from, you'll see a section on how to update using iTunes.

IOS 4 will not update over the air (WiFi etc). You need to plug it to iTunes. After that you can do future updates over the air.

  • HT4623 I do not have the software update option to update my iPad to ios5, is there any other way to update?

I can not seem to update my iPad. To use certain apps I need ios5, however I do not have the software update option to do so. Is it possible to update my iPad any other way?

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

I don't have the software update option in my settings. How can I update my phone so I can download apps?

Are you referring to updating the iOS? Software update for the phone has nothing to do with downloading apps. The only time the OTA software update for the phone iOS was after iOS 5. If you are looking to update applications, then go to the App store and select updates.

I do not have a "Software Update" option on my "General Page" - How do I update my phone?

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.
