HT4628 macbook pro no wifi = lame duck?

I bought a Macbook pro today and I was eager to use it...no way to get wifi connection....a quick search on google and it became very clear that this has been a huge problem for years ... I lost 5 hours today trying to make things work and will have to go to the apple store tomorrow....this is a really poor performance. Now, does anyone have an advice that goes beyond the numerous to do lists that are offered by apple support? I have been trying ALL of them at least three or four times today. none of it worked.

Hi melophage and BobtheFisherman,
Thank you for your help and advice. i went to the shop today where I had bought the MacBook. It connected easily with their wifi. But the guy ran some tests on it and said it didnt respond the way it should. Assumingly, my laptop has a hardware problem and they took it back. i will have to wait for a few days until I get a new one as they didnt have it in stock at their shop, but thats ok. I dont like the idea of starting off with a brandnew laptop and encountering these  kind of problems right from the beginning.
What I find quite remarkable is that from all the posts I have been reading on that issue so far, I couldn' t figure out what is at the root of all those problems with macbook pro and wifi. I mean: what causes the malfunction that definitely seems to affect lets say a robust minority of macbook pro users in one way or another ( with one remedy or another - or none). I have ben using a macbook (2009) that didnt have this kind of problem even once.
Actually, I am still inclined to thinking it may be a hardware quality problem.
Anyway, thanx to both of you for your support!

How can I connect my iphone 4 to my Macbook pro via wifi? Both devices are using the same wifi... I need your help.... Thanks a lot!

you do NOT do this via Bluetooth.  If you have iOS 5, you can synch via WiFi.  If not, you sync via USB

  • Is there any way of sharing my Macbook Pro's Wifi connection to iPhone 4 (Not Using iPhone as hotspot for laptop the other way around)

So a nasty smash destroyed both Front & Back of my iPhone 4, and since having them replaced the Wifi signal has been really weak.
I have seen other posts about screen replacement having to be done by going through the antenna, so something could be missing, or done incorrectly during the screen repair. Will definately be taking it back to the shop and finding out if It was put back together properly.
In the meantime I was wondering if it is possible to share my Macbook Pro's Wifi (always full signal in my house) directly to my iPhone either using USB cable or through bluetooth. It's not been too much of a problem but it would be nice to use my iPhone in bedroom using the Macbooks good signal.
Note: The replacement front screen on iPhone has a small gap >1mm between the screen and centre metal casing on the left side just above the Silent/Loud Switch, which can be noticed by light leaking through the gap. The metal casing also still has a small dent between the volume down buttons and silent/loud switch, again nothing drastic 1mm maximum

Here is the start of the setup:
Click on the Wi-Fi Options button and provide the needed info:
Click on the OK button. Now check the Internet Sharing box to turn it all on. If the port box you checked is no longer checked, then uncheck Internet Sharing, check the port box again, then check the Internet Sharing box again.

  • I have a problem with using MacBook Pro as wifi router when connected to ethernet

I have a problem with using MacBook Pro as wifi router when connected to ethernet. The Airport icon changes to show a laptop inside, my iPad shows connected (I think) but Safari will not operate. I tried pinging my iPad, it seems to see the iPad, but no connection to Safari or to other apps such as Good on the iPad. I have read many posting and tried repeatedly via Sharing in Systems Preferences, but no luck. Suggestions to fix, or is this a Lion problem?

Usually this is a problem related to the domain name server address. If you open Network preferences, select your Ethernet port then click on the Advanced button then on the DNS tab. You will likely see an entry like 10.0.1.1 already listed. Click on the Add [-] button and enter 208.67.222.222 then click on the OK button and then on the Apply button.  See if this helps.
if it does not help then repeat the above but with the Airport port.

  • Macbook Pro- weak wifi solutions ?

New Macbook Pro weak wifi ??
I am also experiencing weak & varied signal strength on my Macbook Pro. I recently switched from a Macbook & have noticed side by side that the macbook has better internet connectivity & signal strength. I have thought about buying the Apple Time Capsule Router ( & back-up) or Airport Extreme. I am curious if I can expect better signal strength & distance.... This is really annoying as I loved my Macbook for many reasons & have handed it off to one of my sons.. Any info about the signal strength & distance I may expect to get ??

    Hi
I've had a similar problem - see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7278377#7278377 . Things continued to get worse, so that sometimes I was losing the signal for several hours at a time: meanwhile my nearby G4 iMac continued to connect with never a hiccup.
In the end replacing the original airport card with a Sonnet Aria Extreme N Mini PCIe 802.11n card has (touching wood, crossing fingers and taking all similar necessary precautions) completely sorted it. No other changes - I'm still using the 11g base station. However, mine was a first revision MBP with an 802.11g card: I guess yours has an 11n card already.

  • Can't connect MacBook Pro to wifi

I am now attempting to post this problem for the third time -suffice to say that my satisfaction with apple is plummeting like a stone!!!
Cannot get new MacBook Pro to connect reliably to wifi at home. All other devices connecting in same location in house with no problem at all so have eliminated problems with physical location of router, which is also relatively new.  Tried to run network diagnostics but refuses to run when problem occurs.  Restarting router clears problem but it reoccurs within ten minutes, also, restarting MacBook clears it but then reoccurs in ten minutes.
***now 4th attempt as boards keep rejecting this message.

Just in case anyone comes by this thread looking for answers, I found out what the problem was: channel interference on my Virginmedia router. The day after I took my macbook to be checked out all my other devices started to have similar problems and after a crash self-taught cause in wifi network technology I changed the channel my router was operating on from one which was very crowded to one which has very little competition on it. Problem solved for all remaining devices, then the macbook came home and has worked like a dream ever since.
I downloaded an app called inSSIDer from the app store, website for info here: http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider-for-mac/
which shows you which channels all your local users are using so you can pick a quieter spot on the airwaves - I found some good instructions for how to do this on the Virginmedia website, but you would have to find how your router works.
I think, but I can't be sure, that the problem started over the last couple of months because some new BT WIFI services arrived in the area - they seem to keep popping up in my list of available wifi services all of a sudden and I don't remember them being there before - but I could be wrong.

  • MacBook Pro loses wifi connection upon wake since I bought a new AirPort Express

Hi. I've been using Apple devices and computers since february 2008 and had no problems until now. I currently own an early 2011 13" MacBook Pro and a PC running Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10. Until early February, I used a 2nd gen AirPort Extreme to connect to wifi upstairs, being connected via Ethernet to my ISP's modem located downstairs which provides a weak wifi signal (of course my ISP says it's impossible since their modem is the best on the market), not even compatible with Apple's wifi systems (all other French ISPs modems are compatible with it), that's why I had to get a 30 ft ethernet cable running down the stairs. My connection was lost everytime I went upstairs/downstairs so I bought a new Airport Express to replace my ISP's modem wifi signal and I'm using my AirPort Extreme to extend the wifi network upstairs. Now all my devices and computers have a strong wifi signal anywhere in my house with only one downside: My MacBook Pro (and only it) loses the wifi connection upon wake after sleep and I have to disconnect/reconnect it manually. I didn't bother installing Windows on it as I removed the Superdrive to setup a DIY Fusion Drive a few months ago so I can no longer boot optical medias and I can't know if it's a hardware or software problem. Again, everything was working all right on it until I changed my Wifi network configuration a month ago when I bought my Airport Express.
    Can anyone help me ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Well this isn't making sence.
What is the model # on your extreme?

  • 2008 MacBook Pro with wifi connectivity issues

    Hello all,
My MacBook Pro has stopped connecting to my wireless internet at my house. Works fine when connected to the Ethernet, but no luck with wireless. My iPad, iPhone, and wife's MacBook Pro have no issues picking up the signal. When I attempted the network diagnostics, the wifi will not turn on. The button that enables you to TURN ON WIFI does not respond. I made a trip to the local apple store where they reset the wireless and it worked fine in the store. Took it home and same problem still existed.   Diagnostic report at the apple store showed no problems with wireless card.
Any thoughts, comments, or wisdom would be appreciated!

Apple released a firmware update for your MBP model to enable it to charge properly with the new-style adapters, after failures to do so were widely reported. Here's an article about the problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3499
And here's a link to the update:

As with all firmware updates, it's essential to follow the installation instructions to the letter.

  • Macbook pro crashing wifi

Since updating to mavericks, my 2011 macbook pro has had regular total crashes (where the system becomes totally non-responsive and can only be recovered by a force shut down) Each time this happens, I am using safari or firefox, when the browser stops loading new data (although the wifi logo up top still says fully connected) - clicking the wifi button will then completely crash the system (starting with the spinning beach ball of death.) Even if the wifi button is not clicked, the system will still crash of its own accord about 5 minutes later, during which period programs behave extremely erratically.
Most of the time this has happened I have been on YouTube.
I have already tried reinstalling mavericks, firefox, and the flash plugin.
    Any help much appreciated, thanks!

  • HT4628 MacBook Pro connection timeout.

I'm running Lion on my MBP version 10.7.5 and I can't connect to my friend's wifi. Every time I try to connect it reads a connection timeout. I can connect to every other wifi network I try but his. I can connect with my iPod and his entire family with their devices but not my MBP. I've read other forums and tried everything. I've done Ethernet and it works fine. I've set my network priority to wifi and even manually set his. I've done the custom location thing and all of that but no luck no matter what I do. I need help.

In support of Nykki, we have same issue with connection timeout.  Have trawled the support here and on others and in summary:
Macbook Pro on 10.7.5 software is up to date.
It doesn't always do it - I'm posting from the notebook now.
It hasn't always done it, problem started in last 2 weeks and my daughter with a 13 inch Macbook has the same intermittent problem since two months.
No, it's not helpful to suggest changing routers or blaming firmware on the router - my iphone, ipod touch, kids' imac, wife's ipad and an Apple TV3 all work fine.   If one more Apple worker or Apple fan suggests the problem is somewhere other than on my MacBook Pro I'll scream.
Sometimes it manages to connect if I do a shutdown-restart on the notebook.
Yes, I have tried the tricks with deleting the wireless networks using KeyChain access, did not work.
Has Apple itself actually acknowledged this issue - there are thousands of search hits on the topic?

  • Macbook Pro's Wifi only works at my house, it has been working perfectly fine everywhere for the past 2 years

    Hi there,
    I have a 13-in Macbook Pro, 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5.
My wifi only works at my house. it has been fine for the past 2 years everywhere else, but now the wifi says its connected, but the internet doesnt work.
I have already tried a number of things to resolve this as it has been happening the past 2 months by looking on here and some have worked, but I can't seem to get anything to work anymore.
When I run the Network Diagnostics the Network Status is the following:
    wifi- Green
    Wifi-settings- Green
    Network Settings- Red
    ISP-Red
    Internet Server-Red
I am home right now so the internet is working fine, but seeing as I use my macbook for school and work, I need it to work everywhere.
    Thanks!

    jcupat,
when you ran the Network Diagnostics above, was that run from home, or was it run away from home?
If it was away from home, do you get all green lights when you run it at home, or does it work properly despite not all of the lights being green?
Does your school or work allow anyone’s computer to connect wirelessly, or do these sites require whitelisting of some sort to permit a computer to use their respective networks?

  • Macbook Pro Retina Wifi problems

I just recently got my macbook pro 13" retina (aprox half week). Recently the wifi has been acting up. I go on sites and randomly sometimes the wifi signal is on and shows its working but the wifi freezes. Nothing on the internet will load, my phones wifi works fine, but not my laptop. I have to turn off the wifi and turn it back on.
Is there anyway to fix this?

  • New MacBook Pro slower wifi than iBookG4

My new MacBook Pro tests at a slower download speed than my iBook G4 1.42 GHz.
I am running a wireless network using a Belkin router (b&g enabled) on a cable network connection (20Mb/2Mb).
When connected via ethernet, the MacBook Pro gets 20,000 kbps download. When connected via wifi, it gets 7-10,000 kbps. (DNS servers are identified and listed in the network control panel.)
The iBook gets 15,000-20,000 kbps via wifi. The iBook is running 10.4.11.
Is this a function of the MacBook Pro or Leopard?
(speeds measured with repeated tests at speakeasy.net).

You can definitely thank Leopard for that.
