HT4796 why a new user account following migration?

following  Itunes  migration from PC to Mac, a new user was created. Could not loads library to my existing account?

Because you're using the Migration Assistant, and it can't migrate data to an existing user account. Transfer everything at once or use a different method.

  • Import Time Machine backup to new user account? Migration Assistant?

Long story short: my wife has a recent Time Machine backup from HER iMac that we would like to import as a new user account on MY iMac.
No need to import apps--just user profile, settings, photos/docs, etc.
Do I need to create a new user account for her on my iMac first? Or will it be done during the import?
Also, should I be using Time Machine for this, or the Migration Assistant?
Just looking for the easiest way to do this, as it will be a temporary situation until her new MacBook Pro arrives.
    Thanks!
EDIT: Not sure if it makes a difference, but her iMac was running Snow Leopard at the time of the last Time Machine backup, and my iMac has Lion.

Use Migration assistant and import her user account from TM backup.
Don't create her user account first. Migrating her account will take care of that.
Shouldn't matter if her previous backup was SL.

  • How do I create a new user account and migrate my data to it?

I have problem with Adobe Bridge crashing when I exit Camera Raw.  I was advised by my local apple service store to create a new user account and test Bridge using the new account.  It works fine.  So what do I do now?  I don't know what in my account is causing the conflict but assume that the solution might be e newly setup user.

Checking the behaviour in another user account is a TEST, not a solution! You don't need to move everything over. Otherwise, every time you get a user account problem, you'll keep moving to a new user account again and again.
If the problem does not occur in a new user account, then the cause is something IN your user account. This is usually a Preference file. Adobe Bridge seems to crash a lot, and it can usually be fixed by deleting the Bridge folder in <user>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/
You can also try deleting the Bridge preference file, which will be in <user>/Library/Preferences, and called com.adobe.bridge5.plist (or similar).
If that doesn't work, you can test removing a whole bunch of the various Adobe files in those folders. You can always put them back if they don't change anything. And you've got a backup, haven't you? ;-)

  • Which files do I transfer to new user account to migrate iTunes playlists??

I created a user account for my wife and have copied over my iTunes library so she can access it all on her account (we didn't want to go through the trouble of using the "sharing" feature, more time consuming). I even transferred the com.apple.xxx files from my Users>MYUSERNAME>Library>Preferences to the comparable folder on her account but I can't get the playlists to show up. Anyone know where the info for these is contained so I can copy it to a comparable folder on her account and let her see use all our existing playlists? Thanks.

Thanks! That worked perfectly. Just made a few exported text files and then imported through iTunes on the new account. I did this process previously but our hard drive crashed and I had to replace it and my last backup was about 6 weeks old (oops...) and the work I did copying stuff over was lost. The way I did it before was different, I thought just a file that has this info in it. But, it worked just fine and took less than 5 minutes. Thanks very much.

  • Why is a new user account created every time I upload files from my old PC. Can't you just use the same user account all the time?

I'm a new Mac user and am finding my way slowly around it. One question: why is a new user account created every time I upload files from my old PC?

  • What is the password for the new user account that is set up via Migration Assistant?

I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro, and used Migration Assistant to download My Documents from a previous PC desktop. The migration was successful, but afterwards the new user account that was set up to house all the new documents became inaccessible to me.
My administrator's password works for my computer and I am able to log in and out, change settings, etc.
However, if I try to log in to the new user account, no password works. Through the administrator's account I have also attempted to change the password, and I am allowed to do so, but when I use the new password I set up, it still denies me access.
Additionally, if I log out the administrator's account and click the new account to log in, it prompts me to make a new password for the account, and whatever I enter is also rejected as "incorrect." (The screen shakes)
I am very frustrated my inability to access this information I must use to work, and I have no idea what the password might be, or how to change it properly.
PLEASE HELP COMMUNITY! I have only had my mac for about a week and I have had it up to hear with this "user friendly" system.

You can change the password from Visual administrator. login to visual administrator, and select services,, under that you will find the system details. change the password.
even if the visual administrator password is expired then u can go thorugh configtoo.bat and there u can change the password.
if that even not possible then u need to login to sql and can execute the commands for changing password.

  • Migrated files and New User Account

    Hello,
New Mac user here.  I successfully migrated all the content from my old PC onto my Mac Mini and it was put into a new user account.  I'd like to transfer this content into the Admin account and delete the added user.  What's the best way to go about doing this?  Thanks so much!

Use Quicktime Player version 7 instead of Quicktime 10.
Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl923
Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".

  • File associations are lost when user account is migrated from one domain to another domain (SID changes)

    Hello,
Currently we are in the middle of a migration project. We are migrating users from child domains to the root domain of one organization.
The user accounts are migrated with powershell using Move-ADObject cmdlet. This works as expected. The SIDHistory attribute is updated correctly.
Recently we received complaints from some *migrated* users - they lost their default/custom file associations. This happens only on Windows 8/Windows 8.1.
    What happens:
the user is migrated and logs on
her profile loads and everything's preserved (as expected)
the user clicks on a .jpeg file (previously associated with program XYZ)
OS asks the user to choose a program to open the file with
the user chooses a default program XYZ and the file opens
when the user clicks on a .jpeg file again - OS asks to choose a program again
i.e. the settings are not preserved.
Our investigation shows that it is connected with the UserChoice registry key and the HASH value under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.SomeExt
    According to this blog
the HASH is calculated based on user's SID. But after the migration the user has new SID and the HASH becomes invalid and we hit this:
"However In Win 8, the registry changes are verified by a hash (unique per user and app)  that detects tampering by apps. In the absence of a valid hash, we ignore the default in the registry."
Currently deleting the UserChoice key for all associations solves the problem. But the user has to make all her customizations again which is undesirable.
Is there any supported way to fix this? Why the OS doesn't update the HASH after the first logon when the SID has changed as it updates the SID for the ProfileList key?
This could become big issue in large migrations.

    Hello Petar K. Georgiev,
Please check the following article to change the registry key to change back to the default file type associations.

  • Creating a new user account and curious log in behavior...

First off I'd just like to apologize if that is not the correct place to be posting this, but after looking around I don't see a perfect fit for this topic anywhere, so I figured here should be okay. Also I want to apologize if this turns out to be a rather lengthy post, I just want to ensure that I supply all info...
Okay, so about a month ago I recognized that my current user account is slowly but surely taking longer and longer to "boot up" after I put in my password and tell it to log in. What usually happens is that I click log in, the background image and taskbar almost immediately pop up but nothing else (finder icons, dock, and the multiple icons in the taskbar which include the airport signal, user name, bluetooth status, battery strength, volume, and my iChat and Adium status) the only things to immediately "activate" in the taskbar are the clock and spotlight.
As of late when I log in something especially strange is happening in that after the 5 or so minutes it takes the dock, rest of taskbar, and finder icons to appear my PB will play the default Apple sound of me emptying trash, rather there is anything actually in the trash or not. It dosen't delete the objects in the trash (if any, as I usually keep it empty), just simply plays the sound. I'm not sure if it playing this sound ties in any with the lagging log in times, I just wanted to mention it as the log in times have slowed down considerably since this sound started.
Bottom line given that there is no way that I know of fixing this problem, I am planning to simply create a new user account. Actually I have already created the new account (by the way, it logs in literally instantaneously, and does not make the strange trash being emptied sound) but was looking for info on how to get all of my files from one account to the other. Unfortunately for me everytime that I install a program and the dialog box pops up asking if you want to install it on all user accounts or just the current one I always click "just the current one" (please don't ask why, as there is seriously no reasoning to this at all...), so is there a way to transfer my current programs from one user account to the other without reinstalling??? It's actually not that many programs I'm talking about here (Shapeshifter, Xounds, XFactor, AIM, Adium, Cocktail, Toast, Popcorn, iPod Rip, and Office), I just figured that if I can simply transfer rather than reinstalling them, it would be a lot easier.
However my 2 primary concerns are my iTunes and iPhoto libraries (3330 songs and 4182 pcitures respectively), considering that I've spent literally hours making countless playlist in iTunes, and countless folders, slideshows, and books in iPhoto, if I was to lose all this it would truly be a mess.
I know I'm probably making a big deal out of this and it's an extremely easy and basic process, please just pardon this still pretty new Mac user and help me out:) Also if anybody else has experienced the log in slow down or strange trash being emptied sound I would be glad to hear your experiences.
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Mervyn

    Hi Mervin,
Bottom line given that there is no way that I know of fixing this problem, I am planning to simply create a new user account.
You can do that (but I wouldn't) this KB article outlines how:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=155373
Basically you will copy the folders within your old home to replace the folders in the new home. Here is a list of specific folders if you decide to do that but a better solution would be to sort your existing user.
Here where your important data is stored ("~" stands for "Home"):
    Your Data in Documents
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Application Support/iCal(copy the whole folder)
Also in ~ / Library/ Application Support (copy whatever else you need)
~ /Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist * This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.
    ~ / Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
    ~ / Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    ~ / Library/iMovie (copy the whole folder)
    ~/ Pictures/iPhoto Library
    If you want cookies:
    ~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    ~/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
so is there a way to transfer my current programs from one user account to the other without reinstalling???
As for applications, they should all be in your Application folder(there is only one) and available to ALL users, unless you have put "limitations" or "parental controls" on the account.
Now to the best course of action:
To find the issue affecting your existing user account, follow these steps:
Log back into your normal user account:
    1. Navigate to ~(yourhome/library/fonts - drag this folder to the desktop.
         • Restart and test your applications.
         • If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( Likely suspects are Time RO & Helvetica Fractions, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
    2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
         • Navigate to ~(yourhome/library/preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
         • Restart and test your applications.
         • If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
    3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
       • Navigate to yourhome/library.
       • Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
       • Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
       • Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
    • Click on "apply to all"
       • If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same      procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are      having trouble with.
    Note:
The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.
If the isssue persists navigate to ~/library/caches and drag this folder to the trash, then log out and back or restart. There is no need to replace this folder.
    Good luck, let us know.

  • Application crashes, but not in new user account. How to fix?

Like many others on the forum, I have experienced frequent crashes in SL in Mail, Safari, Powerpoint, and other applications, particularly when adding an attachment to an email message or inserting an image file in a presentation slide. Did all the usual maintenance things such as verifying and repairing permissions, reinstalling SL, trashing virus protection apps, etc. Crashes persisted. However, I created a new user account and when working in that account the crashes do not occur.
What does this suggest about the nature of the problem and how do I resolve it, preferably without migrating all my files over to the new user account.
    Many thanks.

Open Directory Utility. You will find it in Applications/Utilities.
Click the lock to make changes and enter your admin password.
Go to the menu bar: Edit > Enable root user.
Follow the instuctions to create the System Administrator (Root) user.
Do not use the same password that a regular user already has. Do not use a trivial password.
    Log out the current user.
In the log in window, enter root as the user name.
Enter the password that you just created.
You now have access to all User accounts, folders and files. Move the files you need from the old account to the working one. For example move the contents of your old Documents folder to the new Documents folder. This is easiest if you open two Finder windows and place them side by side. repeat this for the other folders in your old user space with one exception. *Do not* copy the contents of the Library folder.
There are a couple of things in the Library folder that you probably do want. To retrieve your email, copy the contents of the Mail folder. If you have installed fonts in your user space copy those too.
Let your new Library manage itself from then on. Your apps will place preference files etc in the appropriate folders as they are launched.
You should also give the working account admin priviliges. (System Preferences > Accounts)
Be very careful whilst logged in as root. The main Library and System folders are no longer protected and nothing requires a further password entry. Do what you need to do and get out of there.
When you are finished log back in to the working account and open Directory Utility once more.
Go to Edit > Disable root user.
Keep the old user account on the drive for a while until you are sure everything is working correctly and nothing is missing.

  • New user account on iMac and now no music in iTunes.

I created a new user account on my imac because my husbands music kept showing up on my Itunes.  When I opened up Itunes on the new user name, there was no music in my library.  I signed in with my Itunes account.  Why is the music that i paid for not there?

Because it's in your other account where it was purchased originally. Now you have a new account. There is nothing in the iTunes Library until you put it there.
iTunes- How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
iTunes- How to share music and video
iTunes- Setting up Home Sharing on your computer
Sharing Stuff From Different iTunes Accounts (or Computers)
Here's how to do so using different computers:
Transfer what content you want to the separate iTunes library on each computer. To transfer content from your library to another library do the following. We'll assume this is between husband and wife separate accounts and different Apple IDs.
    Launch iTunes under your wife's login;
    Sign her out of iTunes, then you sign in;
    Select iTunes -> Preferences -> Devices -> Disable auto-sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected;
    Connect your phone, DO NOT SYNC;
    Select Store -> Authorize this Computer (only have to do this once);
    Select File -> Transfer Purchases (all of the purchased content on your phone will be transferred to your wife's library);
When complete eject your phone, sign out of iTunes, sign your wife back in.
You can now sync whatever content you want to your wife's phone. Just remember all updates to apps obtained using your account must be done while signed in using your account: sign wife out, you sign in, update apps, you sign out, sign wife in, sync her phone.
This way you can share content (permitted under the EUSLA) and still maintain your separate logins. Do the same on your computer if you want to share content from your wife's library.
Just load whatever content you want to share on each others phones, transfer the content, then delete it from the respective phone if you don't want to keep it there.

  • Deleting an older user account and migration assistant question

    Hello,
So I'm out of the loop big time. I've had my current 17" iMac since 2006 (10.5.8) it's the white border one. Anywho I just got my new 27" i7 iMac and feel really stupid trying to migrate from the old computer to the new one. I couldn't figure it out so had to call Apple help.
First off I put the ethernet cable in the back of both machines thinking it was the Firewire and chose the Firewire option and kept wondering why it wouldn't work. Then it dawns on me I have the ethernet cable in. So I try to transfer that way and get stuck on the Install Mac OSX install disk and install the CD or DVD setup something or other. Well I stick the DVD in my old iMac and open the install disk and see nothing that says CD or DVD setup. I call the Apple line and realize that because my new iMac isn't hooked up to the internet I can't use the ethernet option (okay why I didn't realize that I don't know but it's been a long week and I haven't migrated a computer in a long time).
On top of all that the lady tells me the new iMac has a 800 Firewire and my old one only has a 400 Firewire (so that is why I couldn't get my Firewire 400 cable to work).
So she tells me it will take ages to set up wirelessly but I need to click no and not transfer data to the new iMac, then setup my internet then go back into migration assistant on both machines and click the network option. It is taking ages to do this.
I told her I was on the forums and that doing it this way would create a new user account and she said just to delete the old one once the new one is created. Is it that simple? My old user account is called Pink Tuley and new one is called Tuley. So once the migration is complete (think it's going to take hours on end, my old machine is 160GB with about 140GB of it full) do I just delete the older Pink Tuley account?
Yes, this is a long winded question I know.

    elmac,
I'm currently migrating my old iMac to my new iMac via the internet wirelessly. I did what the Apple support told me to do since I don't want to go out and buy a new Firewire cable (I have a 400 one now and would have to get one that has a 400 and 800 on each end which I could have bought at the store had I known).
Instead I chose not to migrate and set up my iMac with the internet, and now I'm migrating via migration assistant opened up on both machines using using the network option. It's okay if it takes forever to do as I've waited this long (I had to wait 5 weeks for my Macbook Pro HR-AG to arrive).
My old user account is called Pink Tuley and I thought there would be mass confusion if I named the new user account the same name so I chose Tuley for this one. Once I'm all migrated do I just go into the user accounts on my new iMac and delete Pink Tuley?

  • New user account created when transferring  iTunes

Ive just succeeded in transferring my active iTunes from my XP PC to my Mac Book using Migration Assistant however, it has been placed in a new User Account. I don't really want another User Account and so need to know if there is anyway I can merge the User Accounts so that I can use my main iTunes account in my main User Account?

See especially step 9 of "Use Migration Assistant after your Mac has started up" here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4796
This deals with getting the information into the correct user account.

  • Cannot log in to new user accounts

I am a long time Apple user and am completely confounded by a problem I am having creating new user accounts on my G4/400 PowerMac running OX 10.4.11. I've been attempting to setup some user accounts for my kids to use. I have no problems setting up the accounts but when I log out of mine and try to log in as them the login window shakes from side to side indicating an incorrect password. This is something that I had a problem a year ago and never solved and today I am trying once again with out success. I feel like I am doing everything correctly since I've been able to do this on my G3 iBook and MacBook.
Here are a few things I've also done.
-repaired permissions on the drive ( I have 2 in the machine right now but the other is just my iTunes LIbrary drive)
-deleted the old user accounts that I setup but couldn't access.
-tried setting up more new accounts
-repeated the process several times without ever being able to successfully login to any of the new accounts that I created.
Any advice to solve this problem would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Chris

    Hi cc_mac,
I don't know if you have solved this one yet, but I had exactly the same issue when I recently had a hard drive failure and had to re-install everything. I had copies of all my files, but when I went to set up the user accounts, I could create each account, but I couldn't log in.
There is a simple solution, you will need to be in an admin account and you will need to use the command line, so open up a terminal window.
Use the following command for each account you need to fix:
    sudo passwd <username>
where <username> is the account name that you cannot currently log in to.
You will need to enter your admin password to allow you to use sudo, so do that. Then you will be asked to type in the new password for the new account. Just to be absolutely sure, you will be asked to re-enter the new password, so do that, and you are done.
Log out of your admin account, this should bring you back to the log in screen. Now, if everything has gone according to plan, you should have an operational user account.
I'm not sure what the cause of this issue is but it might be some sort of permissions issue happening in the background. Nevertheless, manually setting the password this way seems to have fixed it for me. I sincerely hope this helps you too.
    Kind Regards,
    Mark D.

  • Setting Up a New User Account - iTunes issue

My wife and I were both using our Mac as a single user, but logging into iTunes under separate iTunes accounts to download our own music and apps.
This week I set up a new User Account in her name, and transferred all music and apps to her User Account so she would be able to access and sync on her own account, just by fast switching, rather than logging into iTunes each visit.
When she plugs her phone into the iMac to sync via iTunes, she gets the following message:
*iTunes could not sync information to the iPhone " " because another sync client is already running*.
Anyone had this problem and found a solution ?

I recently had this same error message problem with my 3GS. Here's everything I did, one of the steps solved the problem...
    1. Restarted with the phone unattached.
    2. Repaired permissions using Disk Utility.
    3. Restarted the phone. Here's where I had some difficulty: After swiping to confirm the shutdown, the screen went black, and I had the spinning icon that wouldn't go away. I ended up having to hold the lock and home buttons down to force shutdown the phone. I powered it back up, and it took forever to start, but it eventually did. I then power-cycled it one more time, and everything was back to normal.
    4. Started up iTunes. Go into the preferences, and under the "Devices" tab, I found my previous backup. I deleted it.
    5. Plugged in the phone, and everything was normal. iTunes made a new backup, so the sync took awhile, but it was successful.
    Good luck!
