No. It won't. You can NOT activate an iPhone without a SIM. There are no exceptions. If the OP is getting a message that the SIM is not valid, not present, or not recognized, it will NOT activate.

On restart and configuration as part of activation process, it tells me that activation is not possible and itunes tells me that iphone does not have a sim card (it does). If you go to iTunes on your computer and click on the iTunes Store in left margin and then scroll right to the bottom of the screen in the bottom right corner is a map . You should have the wrong map. Click on the map and choose another one

Hello, i really need help. I had just updated my iphone 3gs to i.o.s. 6.0.1, and after I updated, it won't activate.I tried it in itunes and it always says " We cannot activate your iphone at this time..." and when I activate using Wi-Fi, it says, "Your iPhone cannot be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable." I could swear that my Wi-Fi is fine, and my Itunes is on the latest version. Is this a bad thing or does this normally occurs? Can I still fix this ? I'm so desperate to use my iphone cause I use it everyday for personal purposes. I sure would appreciate any tip or help . PLSSSS ! Thank you for that wonderful being that can help.
Do not take it to a third party repair shop - downgrading causes problems and voids your warranty.
I had to unlock it so that i could really use it as a phone.
And that is the root of the problem. Unless you had your carrier unlock it, it was hacked and cannot be legitimately activated. Even if you don't care about warranty or problems, downgrading simply will not help an activation issue. -

Sorry, but Apple does not provide a downgrade path for iOS.
Because downgrading is unsupported by Apple we cannot discuss it on these forums, but you can use Google to find information on how to install an older version of iOS on any device.
Note that you will void the warranty and loose official support by Apple.

I just updated my iphone 3GS on itunes. It deleted my ipod on the phone as well as in itunes. My music is still in the library, but no ipod under devices. Does anyone know what happened and how to get either or both back?
Did you fail to import your photos before updating? If so, then they are likely gone. You can try restoring from backup. If that fails then they are gone. You should regularly import photos to your computer, most especially before any update.
Did you fail to transfer any purchases on iphone ( that were not on your computer) to your computer before updating? If so, then you will have to redownload:

To expand on Rudegar's comment, often, updating a jailbroken or hacked phone will permanently brick the phone.
If your phone was jailbroken or hacked to unlock it, it is now most likely completely useless. -
I just updated my Iphone 3GS from 4.3.3 to 6.1. Now is says that my SIM Card is not supported by my carrier. I called Rogers and he says to restore my phone. But I can't get there is it won't recognize my phone. Help!
Insert a SIM from a supported carrier.
Where did the phone come from, it sounds like the device has been hacked or jailbroken to be unlocked and updating has re locked to the original carrier. It is also possible that the SIM simply needs to be reseated or replaced. -

Contacts are NOT part of the iTunes backup. If you had read the User Guide when you got your phone, you would have learned that Apple recommends you synch your contacts for safekeeping to your computer (Outlook, Address Book) or a cloud service. Using the phone as your only source of your contacts is foolish as the phone can easily be lost, damaged, stolen, or the data become corrupt.
If you've been using your phone as strongly recommended, your contacts are safe and sound on your computer or cloud service ready to be synched back to your phone. Of course, you should be backing up your computer regularly as well.
If you haven't been doing this, your contacts are likely gone. -

Just a guess here, but when you are in Contacts, look to the top where it says Groups. Could yours be set to Hide All Contacts?
