HT4972 I do not have an update option in my general/setting area on my iPad 2

I have been trying to update my iPad 2 for days.  I do not have an update option and I have tried updating from iTunes.  I get an error stating the network has timed out.  I have never selected for the time out.  I have version 4.3.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

Don't have "software update" option. How do I get ios5 on ipad

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 or earlier on it then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases if you are on iTunes 11). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

An iPad 2 will update to iOS 6.0.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple), so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change.

How do I get the update option in my settings trying to update to iOS 5

That only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you are on iOS 4 then you will need to do the next update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off it via File > Transfer Purchases (you may also want to copy photos off the iPad as well) and then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'. Trying to update ipad.  My ipad does not have the "Software update" option referenced in instructions.

  • Ipod 2g settings does not have software update option

Your software version is not up to date, and therefore does not have that in "settings" yet.  You must connect it to your computer and update via iTunes.
Your iPod needs iOS 5 or higher, in order to have the software update option in "settings"

  • HT4623 My iPhone does not have "software update" in Settings under General

    Hi,
I have an iPhone 4. It has the software it came with - iOS 4.3.3 I believe. I want to upgrade it to iOS6 but I'm not sure how. First, in my settings under general, there is no "upgrade software" section. Second, do I need to upgrade to iOS5 first before I upgrade the phone to iOS6? Also I ended my contract with AT&T months ago & they still have a "no sim" message on my ipad2 (successfully upgraded to IOS 6 after I upgraded using the macpro laptop computer I have to upgrade it to iOS5 it took forever to upgrade to 5 and only 20 minutes to upgrade to 6) anyway, back to my iPhone 4 - I use it on my wireless network at home. I do not use it as a phone and don't plan to. But I use it for so many other things around the house (stay at home mom) like calendars and email and a book. Can anyone help me with the questions I have about upgrading my iPhone 4 to iOS6 without losing the newborn baby photos of my 7 month old?
    Thank you!!

Only iOS 5 and later can be updated "over the air".  If you want to upgrade your iOS you will need to do so using iTunes.
