I need help - OSX 10.8.4 brand new today - never had Java 6 so I can't go back to it. Is there any way to get it to work on my computer? I really need to get Java asap so I can take some assessment tests for a job (which is why I bought the computer today!)
Any help is greatly greatly greatly appreciated. I'm hitting my head against the wall.

The Apple support article HT5559 is easy to follow and clear, tried, but it just does not work.
Javaws still starts the JDK 7
(which can be checked using jvisualvm)
For our customers it is a big problem due to a bug in Java7 on OSX.
Right now i tried to start different javaws files (e.g. /System/Library/Java/Support/Deploy.bundle/Contents/MacOS/javaws OR /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home/bin/javaws )
with no success..
e.g. As brute force test renaming the folder /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.7.0_09.jdk/ should cause no harm (it is Oracle's JDK7, right..) but it stops javaws functioning. Therefore some reference still points to it (after HT5559). Why, which?
So we would be happy to figure out how to re-activate JDK6 on OSX.

Check out the Java for Mac FAQs. You might have to uninstall the JDK first. Between it and the Apple doc, you should be able to sort things out.

Java Malfunction in Mac OSX 10.5 - .jar files won't open

All of a sudden none of my .jar files will open (most importantly the dimsum.jar which I use almost everyday). I have run a clean up of my cache and tried everything I can think of to bring back the .jar operations and nothing works as it did before. Upon attempting to open the file my Console messages consist of a huge list of font names something like (0x0-0x233233.com.apple.JarLauncher1561 Type: TONES Name: ZoobeSSK-BoldItalic) and I get a loading window that freezes never leads to the main program.
I had this problem before and I simply rearranged my Java preferences so the 32-bit J2SE 5.0 was at the top of the list and it solved the issue but this time it didn't work. Right now my Java Applications list order is like this
J2SE 5.0 32-bit
Java SE 6 64-bit
J2SE 1.4.2 32-bit
J2SE 5.0 64-bit
Being that I am not an official "developer" and that I only basically know my way around OSX, I thought maybe I could skirt the problem by changing my .jar file into an .app and skip the Java console all together. So I DL'd jarbundler which it turns out is also a .jar file and it won't open either. I simply get a message saying "The Java JAR file "jarbundler 2.1.0.jar" could not be launched."
Here is the Console message when I attempt to open Jarbundler.jar if this helps:

Recently nothing has really changed... I tried reinstalling my stock fonts and that didn't help. The programs that aren't working are Dimsum (http://www.mandarintools.com/dimsum.html) and Jar Bundler that comes with the Apple's free Xcode Developer Tools. I thought if I could get Jar Bundler to work I could turn Dimsum into an app and dodge the problem altogether, but that didn't work either... My Java is updated (according to my computers Software Update window) and everything else seems to be working fine... I hope it doesn't turn into a system reinstall...

Startup Problems with CQ5.6, Java 1.7, and OSX 10.8

I'm having a problem with installing CQ5.6 on OSX 10.8 with Java 1.7. Installing with Java 1.6 is ok, and on OSX 10.7 is ok, but the combo of 10.8 and java 1.7 is having problems. I've found two issues, but it hasn't gotten us to a solution:
1) Just out of the box, I get an error connecting to the repository, with the root cause :
Caused by: java.io.IOException: Could not create a listener on any of the following ports: [8088, 8089, 8090, 8091, 8092, 8093], and could not connect to another cluster node
I then found this answer: http://www.eyelock.net/blog/archives/490 - and tried starting up with that JVM startup param.
2) Then, the IOException went away, but was left with the Unknown Host Exception - described here: http://blogs.adobe.com/dmcmahon/2012/09/03/cq5-5-javax-jcr-repositoryexception-unable-to-r egister-data-store-in-cluster/
After modifying the hosts file and restarting, I'm still having problems. Anyone else have problems with this combo?

The envirnoment you are running does it have internet connection? Please try with adding alias[1]. If does not solve let us know exact stack trace.

Errors running Java app on Mac OSX

Hello,
I've written a Java application and packaged it as a JAR file that runs fine on Windows. When I try to run it on
Mac OSX, though, I get the following error:
% java -jar Clavis.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
java/awt/KeyEventDispatcher
at Clavis.main(Clavis.java:7)
I'm assuming this means that the program needs and is somehow not getting access to the java.awt.* classes it requires. How can I tell it where they are? Is it possible to do this within the JAR file so that users don't have to configure this manually?

Q: When will Apple have an implementation of J2SE 1.4 available?
A: A Java 1.4 Developer Preview was released at WWDC2002 to all seeded ADC members. This pre-release has only been qualified against the WWDC Jaguar seed, and has not been qualified against any other seeds/builds, including the final release of Mac OS X 10.2. It is for this reason that the WWDC preview has remained unavailable to ADC members, even though Jaguar has shipped.
The product development cycle includes plans to seed an additional, more complete prerelease version of J2SE 1.4.1 to developers. Specific dates for releases have not been determined and are in part dependent upon Sun's release schedule. Please note that J2SE 1.4.x will not be available in any form for versions of Mac OS X prior to 10.2.
If it follows the same pattern as past releases, the answer to your question will probably be months, albeit a low number of them, from Sun's official release date of 1.4.

First of all i am running mac osx and i want a decent dbms system.
i'm working on a windows db2 server but i want to port my java application for that dbms to mac.
Do you know any db2 compartible system? (Of course i'm working with java clients)

Running Java SE 6 on OSX 10.5.8

I have a 24" iMac running OSX 10.5.8, and trying to use a web based collaboration tool that requires Java 6. The page doesn't load properly.
When I check Java Preferences, it shows I have the following enabled:
       Java SE 6     64-bit
       J2SE 5.0      64-bit
       J2SE 5.0      32-bit
(in that order...)
But when I go to the Java test page at http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml, it shows I'm running Java 5 Update 24.
It does this with both Safari 5.0.2 and Firefox 3.6.10.
How can I convince my browsers to use Java 6?

I reset the Apple ID and I change the password EVERY TIME I've to log in with my Apple ID.
I try to login, the message appears, I change the password and then I can log in.
But the next time (maybe the next day) I've to repeat the process.
Why?

i have installed java 1.4.2 in Mac and set the path to a location.
like
export JAVA_HOME={some path} in the .bashrc file
But when ever i run the following command from the terminal
$which java
it shows the default java path instead of one put in .bashrc file

Do you speak of true blue Java or Javascript? If the latter then it is a problem with the Browser.
But if it is the real Java, do you have the offical version of Java from Oracle installed?
Getting applications to see official Java is a nightmare. If you install the Runtime Environment only (JavaRTE) most applications do not see it.
To force offical Java system wide, I found you have to install the Java Developer Kit (JavaJDK). It's a larger install as it also comes with documentation and compilers but it make offical Java system wide.

HT5559 JAVA problems!

Hi, I might have installed Java 7 on my Mac OS 10.6.8 before I finding out that it is incompatible with Mac OS 10.6.8. I therefore need to make sure I am using Java 6. I found this page very usefull for what I need to do. BUT: after I copy-paste the first command line in Terminal, it asks me for my administrator password but does not take in any typing or copy-pasting. It only allows me to abort (ctrl+C) or hit enter!! I find myself obliged to restart my computer again and again and getting stuck at the same point.
Any suggestions?

When Terminal asks for your password, type it in and hit return. The password is not displayed.

HT1338 Cant find find Java 6 for Mac OSX 10.4.11

Go to Java's website, it says use Software Update. Software Update says that there is nothing to update - but I am missing Java 6!!!

You need to install Snow Leopard to install Java 6. You cannot on a PPC computer. You must have an Intel machine. To get the latest available Java you can run you will need to purchase and install Leopard. Look for copies on eBay and Amazon.

HT5559 Java web start does not work

I have followed the instructions in this article, including the last step about web start, but it still does not work, neither applets or web start. When I try to launch a JWS application by double clicking it I get the dreaded warning dialog:
To open this Web Start application, you need to download the Java Runtime Environment.
Click “More Info…” to visit the website for the Java Runtime Environment.
I do have a JRE installed, 1.6, since I for compatibility reasons can't upgrade.
Trying to launch a web start application from the commandline looks like this:
$ javaws /tmp/airview.jnlp
Java Web Start splash screen process exiting ...
Can not find message file: No such file or directory
Regular Java-programs work fine.
$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_37"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_37-b06-434-11M3909)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.12-b01-434, mixed mode)

This fixed the issue for me:
sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Delete :JavaWebComponentVersionMinimum" /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta. plist
In the comments to the linked article someone suggests to comment out the node in stead of deleting it. Probably safer (it's explained further down how to do that). Anyway I already spent to much time on this nonsense, deleted it and it worked, so I'm happy.
