In the OS X Mavericks site, Why indicate a link to OS manual, when there are none for the "Mavericks"?

    Hi Histotek,
You may want to make sure that your computer meets the system requirements for upgrading to Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) -
Apple - OS X Mavericks - Read the technical specifications.

In particular the supported models part is important.

  • HT6114 I installed Mavericks and now safari wont work.  Help!

I gleefully installed Mavericks thinking I was doing the right thing.  After an hour of figuring out that I had internet connectivity but Safari wasnt working I spent several more hours trying to figure out what to do .  I did not back up the system before I upgraded (brillinat decision on my part) but now I am stuck.  Do I just use Firefox or chrome which dont seeem to have problems and wait until Apple comes out with a fix or???? I thought getting an Apple was supposed to avoid this kind of issue.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • HT6114 OS X Mavericks v10.9.2 Update will not install after restart

My iMac continues to say I need to restart in order to install 10.9.2 but after restart it freezes up on the restart and then I have to shut down with power button. It always restarts after power shut down but then continues to say it needs to be restarted in order for install. This as been going on for weeks. I contacted Apple support - they want me to pay $ 19.99 so they can tell me how to fix their update! This is the first dissatisfied call to Apple I have had, hope it's not a trend!

I suggest you backup your data to an external drive as a clone. If your drive has issues you want to be sure your data is safely backed up.
Both of these applications are free to clone. You will need to purchase an external drive.

If the Safe boot fails to help, I would boot into the Recovery Drive and run Repair Drive using Disk Utility. You cannot repair your drive while you are booted from the drive.
If this still fails, boot back into the Recovery Drive and re-install Mavericks.
    Boot into Recovery Drive.
Hold down Command R key when restarting.

  • HT6114 OS X Mavericks v10.9.2 Update - How do you block incoming iMessages from individual senders?

Just trying to figured out how to block individual senders on iMessage (blocking feature added to 10.9.2). I thought that an option would exist in the application by going to the "Buddies" menu but alas, the option is greyed out on both my systems after the 10.9.2 update.
The help file associated says to
Select a conversation in the sidebar, or a buddy in your buddy list, then choose Buddies > Block.

    A quick summary.
In Messages menu > Preferences > Accounts > iMessages account which now has a Blocked tab.
The Messages > Buddies Menu > Block only applies to AIM Accounts
You can also block them by name in Messages > Preferences > Accounts > AIM accounts Privacy tab > Block Specific People List button (Block by Screen Name)
Jabber Buddies are effectively "blocked" if they are not Authorised (to be a Buddy).
    See also the Buddies Menu.
Many of the Menu items refer to iChat Actions which is the backbone of the app.

  • HT6114 Update to Mavericks?

I am thinking about updating to Mavericks from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 . I don't use a lot of third party software, Quark I do use and it is version 8.5.1 - their site isn't tell me if compatible, does anyone know if that is compatible with Mavericks? I mainly just use this for internet so will I have any issues doing the upgrade? Also, I did a test on Lion a long time ago and now have a split drive with 2 partitions (I don't really know much about this but was told to do this for the test). I "never" use the Lion portion so want to get rid of it and get back to one partition. How would I do this and can I just upgrade without transferring all the software back and forth, etc.? I just want to do the upgrade, remove the 2 partitions and make it one, without having to reinstall all software, etc., is that possible? I know Quark has issues when I have to reinstall because need all kinds of codes, etc. Also, I have Verizon FiOS and print wirelessly so will all that work the same after this is done? Can anyone tell me exactly what to do to get this to one partition and upgrade without a major reinstall of all software - any help is appreciated. THANKS!

Quark says it's not: Important message BEFORE upgrading to OS X Mavericks - Quark Forums
I mainly just use this for internet so will I have any issues doing the upgrade?
I had no "issues" with upgrading to Mavericks, or after.
Folks that have "issues" usually have bad/old/incompatible software/hardware that doesn't play well with Mavericks, for example:
any third party "utilities" like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, or similar dreck
    third party antivirus software
    Blackberry software
anything from Google (Google Drive, Chrome, etc.)
    WD hard drives
I just want to do the upgrade, remove the 2 partitions and make it one, without having to reinstall all software, etc., is that possible?
Yes. Using Disk Utility you would delete the Lion partition and then resize the SL partition. See Recombine Partitions on Mac | SkimFeed.com
without having to reinstall all software, etc., is that possible?
Most of the apps you are using with SL are going to have to be updated to work with Mavericks, and thus you will need to download and install updated versions.
Also, I have Verizon FiOS and print wirelessly so will all that work the same after this is done?
FiOS works with Mavericks (I'm a FiOS customer too). Whether your printer will still work with Mavericks is another matter. It will depend on whether your printer and its Wifi capabilities are Mavericks compatible. Check on your printer manufacturer's website to see if it is. This information can be very difficult to figure out from the printer manufacturer's website, however. If it does not explicitly say that the printer is Mavericks compatible I would not assume that it is. Printer manufacturers do not go out of their way to support their printers with new operating systems, especially if the printer is a few years old. This is how they encourage you to buy a new printer (it would seem that this would encourage you to buy a printer from somebody else, but these corporate types are not Rhodes scholars). There are some options (like generic print drivers, Gutenprint, and AirPrint) if your printer is no longer supported. If your printer is still supported under Mavericks, then most likely when you install Mavericks, the new drivers that you will need for printing and/or scanning will be automatically available via Software Update.
Can anyone tell me exactly what to do to get this to one partition and upgrade without a major reinstall of all software - any help is appreciated. THANKS!
See the answer above regarding the partitions and resizing.
For the upgrade, especially if you are going to upgrade from 10.6.8, a clean install would be a good idea:
figure out your compatibility issues and decide whether you want to upgrade your apps too.
run disk utility and repair your hard drive and permissions.
do a complete backup of your old system.
    unplug your peripherals
    download the Mavericks installer
reboot in safe mode (restart and hold down shift)
    run the installer
    install your apps
copy your documents over from your backup

  • IWork apps gone after upgrading to mavericks

    Hello guys !
Recently my macbook pro (running Mountain Lion ) was unable to install some apps and after 2 year it was some kind of slow .. so I erase my hard and reinstall it using bootable USB ( I once did it before )
after that I upgrade to mavericks manually ... since I bought macbook > I own iWork & iLife apps ( not on DVD) ... going to mac store for redownloading purchased apps ...WOW ... iWork apps was gone and I have to pay ! but iLife apps was still free for me
free upgrade to mavericks cust me 60$ to rebuy what I own before !!!
I don't know what happend here ..  even I've mailed to mac os support and they answer me that I only own these apps for iOS ... but I do owned them !!!
do you have any idea what should I do ?
what is wrong with apple about this ?

This is a user to user support forum. We don't have access to your Purchase History. iTunes/Mac App Store support does. They can see everything that you have bought since you opened the iTunes account. We can't help with your dispute with iTunes Support.
Why would you erase the HDD and not have a secure backup of all your apps and data?

  • Seriously messed up my macbook pro... I think.

    Hello!
I purchased a toshiba hybrid HD/SSD (MQ01ABD100H) and 8gb of ram from macsales.com. I purchased this to upgrade my macbook pro from 4gb of memory and 500gb hdd to a hybrid 1tb hd/ssd and 8gb of ram. I received these items in the mail today, and went on their website to install everything correctly. After successfully installing everything into the computer, I turned it on. At first, I was getting the folder with a question mark in it, so I just loaded mavericks off of my flash drive. When I went to boot it off that, it comes up with an error saying there was an error, please wait a few seconds or press a key to continue startup; this is a new error to me so I just continued the startup. A few seconds later, next to the Apple a bunch of black text with some errors and the computer name came up. It then restarted the computer before I could take a picture and white screened . I turned it off and removed the new hard drive and put it in a passport to install the mavericks manually from my iMac. I did that sucessfully, and when I put it in my computer it was doing the same thing. So then I launched it from the recovery drive. I went to install a fresh install, but after about 2 minutes in, it restarts itself and goes back to the selection of time machine back up, fresh install, or disk utility. It's in a never ending loop of this. I then to troubleshoot put in my old drive hoping I could just use that. As soon as I put it in and closed it up and turned it on, it was doing the error and black text with whitescreen. I proceeded to call apple a few minutes ago, hoping they could give me some advice. I then learned by telling them I did it myself, I voided my hardware warranty (how happy I am about this). They gave me some repair places I could go to, but it's not very likely they will take me due to me voiding my warranty. Is there anyone that has had this problem? Or can give me help/advice or anything? I'm going on vacation friday to Hawaii and I need the Macbook for business... This has been a disaster. I have a feeling it's the actual macbook pro, since when I switch the hard drives it's messing up still. If anyone can help me, I appreciate all suggestions or solutions!!!
    Thank you!

I can boot it off of the external enclosure; here is what happened.
When I turned it on, after going into the select a boot and selecting the external drive, it went into the white screen with a bunch of black text(i assume errors.)After this error, it automatically restarted itself. I let it run it's course and figured it would whitescreen again, however it did not. It successfully went to my log in screen, but there are major graphic errors with the mouse and the display (shown below.) After successfully logging in, it took about 4-5 minutes to load the desktop successfully (usually takes about 12-20 seconds). Does this help at all?
    I really appreciate your help!

  • TC 3TB Model A1409 compatibility with OS X 10.9.4

I have a TC 3TB model A1409.  I have 2 OS X 10.7.5 machines and 2 OS X 10.9.4 machines.  The 10.7.5 machines back up to the TC fine using Time Machine.  The OS X 10.9.4 have stopped working, wire or wirelessly.  All are on the same network.  What is the issue?  Will a new TC fix it?  Will a new TC work with my 10.7.5 machines?

The older Gen4 TC is perfectly fine with any OS. The problem is Mavericks network is up the creek.
Often a simple reboot will refresh everything.. or a full network restart which should be done in correct order. modem.. TC.. clients with a couple of min for each device to boot between them.
When Apple changed to Mavericks they changed from AFP to SMB as the default network protocol. This I think has led them into a world even more bug filled than in earlier OS.
Please try the following to get your Gen4 working again.
    1. Factory reset.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    2. Ensure all computers have ipv6 set to link-local only. Eg for wireless
Do the same for ethernet if you use it. IPv6 is now vital to OS to work with the TC.
    3. SMB naming rules are much tighter.. so please use new names when you go through the setup in airport utility.
    eg TC name.. TCgen4
    eg TC wireless name. TCwifi
    4. In Mavericks manually mount the TC disk in finder.
Use Go in the top menu, Connect to Server.
    type in
AFP://TCgen4.local (replace with whatever name you use, local is the default domain and will not change).
OR even better use the TC IP address. You can do this if the TC is the main router or you setup with static IP.
AFP://10.0.1.1 (that is the default IP.. replace with whatever IP your TC is on).
Store the disk password in the keychain. This should help to keep the TC running and available.. although the occasional reboot might still be necessary.

  • How to create a simple filing system for my personal material

--After using Windows for several years, I have bought my first Apple computer last month: MacBook Pro, with OS X Mavericks 10.9.5. I find that just creating files, saving text/photos etc in them, and then creating a folder and saving the files in the folder, is a major operation for me. Obviously there must be a simple, straightforward way to do it, that I don't know. I have not found anything in my Apple books - too basic for them. If somebody could help me, I will appreciate. I am new to the Apple system, so please describe to me step-by-step the way.
--Also, should I download the new Yosemite 10.10 now? Thanks.

    Hi ..
You can save text files to the Documents folder.
You can save photos to the Pictures folder.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Finder > Preferences then select the Sidebar tab.
The Finder can also be opened by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock.
    Select both:  Documents and Pictures
That makes it convenient to save text files and photos.
As far as Yosemite goes, since you're coming from Windows, it be better to learn Mac OS X there first, then upgrade to Yosemite at a later date. It's free and available at the App Store. The App Store icon should be in your Dock.
