HTML DB and Web 2.0

I started discussing this at
Future direction of HTML DB
I have been doing some reading about this new buzzword Web 2.0 that seems to have sprouted in the last few months. It is all about rich, thin-client Web applications with amazing amount of interactivity and responsiveness.
See
http://www.smartclient.com
http://www.bindows.net
http://dojotoolkit.com/
etc
All this and much more is discussed on the blog at http://www.ajaxian.com
As far as HTML DB is concerned, Carl said on the earlier thread above that 3.0 is going to have features to add more AJAX style interactive stuff in the App Builder in a declarative way.
Thats great, but I think the entire philosophy of HTML DB (Application Builder) might need to change to really meet the needs of creating interactive apps like the ones showcased above. HTML DB has a very robust back-end infrastructure, great security, great show/accept processing, great reporting engine, but it has a really small selection of "widgets" and even poorer layout options. Template based layout is great when you want to have a consistent look and feel but it really goes against HTML DB's stated goal of rapid app development (drag and drop layout would be more in line here)
Would HTML DB 3.0 be able to create apps like the ones above? 4.0? 5.0?
I read on this forum once that HTML DB generates HTML, so anything that can be done in HTML can be done in HTML DB. But these rich apps are so much more than just HTML, they feature such a high degree of interactivity, that entire concept of user interactiion is missing from the HTML DB Application Builder.
To all the non-Oracle people out there, how important is this kind of functionality to you? Do you see a clamour for it today? Are your business users demanding these features? Are they even aware of this?
[Dont get me wrong: As anyone who lurks these forums knows, I am a great fan of HTML DB, I wouldnt hang around if I werent. I started off earlier this year and got some great help from this forum. Nowadays, I find that I have more answers than questions so I try to return the favor and help out when I can. But I cant help but shake the feeling that Oracle has kind of missed the boat on this one, HTML DB is too little, too late. Of course, I would be glad to be proven wrong!]
Closing comment: One of the blog entries was very blunt
"OS itself has a wonderful array of panels, buttons, etc.
Once upon a time there were great tools like Delphi that
allowed developers to take advantage of the operating
system. With Delphi's ability to create single-file exe's
with all dll's being optional, it was quite possible to
build a fantastic thin client app that outperforms all of
this silly ajax stuff, and was MUCH MORE secure. The rush to
web apps seems so silly, when Windows has provided the
ability to do all of this great work for a long, long
time... "
Comments welcome.
Thanks

Scott: Appreciate your input, as always.
No and no. Most business users are simply amazed by
HTML DB in and of itself. Nothing special or
additional is needed to "wow" them. Maybe my experience is slightly different because we just finished deploying Siebel CRM in our organization.
Have you seen the Siebel e-Business CRM software? Siebel 7 runs entirely in a browser and its UI is amazing, just like a desktop application, very responsive and seamless. No Submit button anywhere in sight. No explicit Save, just step off the record to save. Drag and drop to reorder stuff, the list goes on and on.
Contrast that to a traditional thin-client application (be it HTML DB or .NET or ASP or PHP or whatever) and you will see why business users get confused as to why thin-client means so wildly different things.
And Siebel, like a few other vendors, has been doing this for 3+ years now, long before the media attached these fancy buzz words like AJAX and DHTML to it.
I mean, here we are swooning into ecstasy, going Oooh, Ahh over little things like Type-ahead, Autocomplete in text boxes, dynamic select lists when this stuff has been available to business users via (desktop) client-server applications since Windows 3.1 days! With the advent of the Internet era and thin-client browser based UIs, we sacrificed rich application functionality for ease of deployment and maintenability for us (IT folks)! Business users got a raw deal!
[Maybe now that Oracle is thinking about buying Siebel some of that technology will seep over into HTML DB!]
Again, I tend to be more conservative when
recommending that a project use a brand new
technology, but at the same time, see lots of newI fully appreciate the value of stability and security and as I said in my original post HTML DB's back-end infrastructure is rock-solid. Great show/accept processing, insanely fast, great security, just superb.
But this AJAX stuff is neither so bleeding edge nor so unstable as it is made out to be.
Rumour has it that Microsoft's Outlook Web Access team "invented" the XMLHTTP object back in 2001 and many many robust Javascript libraries have been built on top of it. Javascript has been around in browsers for almost a decade now. Yes, industry standards and browser support for CSS still continues to evolve but good toolkits handle this (and cross-browser compatibilty) quite well.
Again, none of this stuff is exactly "new", the underlying components (XMLHTTP, Javascript, CSS, plain old DOM scripting) has been around for years now.
Thanks

  • Files needed to be present to use HTML help and Web help

For using RoboHelp for word generated .hlp files, we kept
.hlp and .cnt files in the production environment for the users.
Now, we are planning to migrate to Robohelp for HTML help and
    gradually to WebHelp.
In that case what are the files that are required to be
    present in the production environment?

With HTML Help all you need to ship are the CHM files. That
is because these are compiled files that contain all the essential
ingredients to see and use the help. The only exception to this
rule is if you are using a glossary or browse sequences. In this
instance you'll need to ensure all your users have the
HHACTIVEX.DLL file installed on their PC. If they don't they won't
be able to see them. You cab get the install routine for your
application to install and register this file.
With regards to Webhelp, you'll need to publise all the files
generated by the compile. Part of the compile process is setting up
the location of the published files (e.g. Intranet, FTP). You don't
have to worry about what to publish. As long as you have your
location correctly defined all the files are copied there.

  • Help with HTML tags and web page creating

I have a project that is supposed to use an HTML class we make. He has given us the basics but we have to fill it in. My question is: How do you code a value that has been passed to a method into an html tag. For instance we have one that is called makeEmail and it is supposed to place an email address on a webpage. Here is the method, I just need to figure out how to code it correctly. Any suggestions on how to do this?
    public void makeEmail(String address)
    webPage += "" + address + "";
    }

An email tag in html is very similar to a hyperlink. The string you want the makeEmail method to create is as follows:
<a href="mailto:(email address")>(email address or description or whatevber you want displayed on screen)</a>So using for example my email address, you use the following line:
<a href="mailto:[email protected]">Send an email to Mr_Silly</a>It is very much worth looking into an html tutorial, try searching for one on the web, cos there a thousands out there. It is a very simple language to learn.

  • Using WEB Output HTML Gallery and uploading using ftp upload the HTML page views correctly but images only display the alt tag?

Using WEB Output HTML Gallery and uploading using ftp upload the HTML page views correctly but images only display the alt tag in the browser window?

After a little investigation, I discovered that PNGs also do not render correctly in IE7 in similar circumstances.
I ended up using Levels in Photoshop to bring the output blacks up to "5", saved the images as PNGs, modified the HTML from .jpg to .png, and that seems to have covered up the problem well enough.
By the way, I did confirm that IE8 beta 2 renders the images correctly.

    String html = ...
    String[] imgTags = html.split("<img.*?>");[http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/lang/String.html#split(java.lang.String)|http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/lang/String.html#split(java.lang.String)]
to get your image tag data and then parsing that to get the src attribute. You can either treat this problem as a big string-parsing problem, or getting some HTML DOM library and using that to structure the page as a tree for easier access.
If you want more help you'll have to show the code you have so far. We can't write this for you.

  • Understanding Application and Web Server Integration

    Folks,
I am relatively new to web development and have some fundamental questions. I have read various articles and posts on these forums that describe the difference between an Application server and web server but haven't seen any on the integration of the two.
I have recently downloaded the Sun Java System Application Server, built a simple application with a couple of JSPs, servlets and static html pages and deployed it through a deployment tool that came with the application server.
Now, the application is accessible through my browser, so It seems the application server does everything I need, even for serving static pages. Do i need a web server? If so, would I implement a web server for design reasons and host static pages on that? Any hints on how to do this?
    Your help is appreciated.
    -joe

No you don not. However, if you had a large site, which experienced thousands of hits a minute, you wouldn't want to burden your application server with the overhead of serving static content. Otherwise, go for it.
As far as integrating an application server with a web server, I only have access integrating Tomcat with various web servers and it's not difficult at all. There's another post here (today as a matter of fact) where I give details for Tomcat and IIS.

  • Closing an application and web browser at same time at runtime

Does anyone have any ideas of code that addresses that problem of closes the web browser at runtime when the application closes?
I've been converted about 140+ forms and 300+ reports to 10g from 6i client/server and I've got all the forms converted but now that I've got it up on a website at runtime, I'm documenting all these application issues that I just haven't had time to research.
It sounded like I do write some Java Beans, based on some threads I've read. But I didn't fully understand.
    Any help is appreciated.

Ok, I was able to do it when I hard-coded to the http://servername:port in the web.show_document. My question is: I have a windows and Linux (Development and Test server). All 3 are different servers. How can I make it to where I don't have to hard-code the server name. I've put the html page in the ORACLE_HOME/forms/java folder. The application and web browser closes just fine when I hard-code the server name in the web.show_document command. Is there a way I can get around this where I don't have to hard-code the name, but still access it from the same path on all 3 servers?
    web.show_document(http://servername:port/forms/java/closewebbrowser.htm, -self)

  • Creative Suite 6 Design and Web Premium will not Reinstall: Says Serial Number is not "Valid"

Chat support has been no help.  I uninstalled Creative Suite 6 because I was having issues with some of the software and hoped that a reinstall would solve the problem.  Now the software will not reinstall.  It takes me to the validation screen where it asks for the serial number and says "We are unable to validate this serial number for CS6 Design and Web Premium.  Please contact customer service," when i type the serial number in.  I have now gone through THREE chat sessions with "customer support" in which they have sent me a link to download the same program, and it would not reload because of the serial number, and then have walked me TWICE through a multitude of tasks that have not solved the problem.  They keep asking me the same questions again and again, ignore my own questions to them, and cannot give me any information that actually helps.  The phone system will not support Creative Suite.  I NEED this software to reload as I've already missed one publishing deadline and will miss another if I cannot use this software, which, at the moment, seems to be a $350 coaster.
This is the same disc I used to install the software originally.  I installed it on my old laptop and used it there without incident until my new laptop came (a period of about two months).  I then Uninstalled the software from the old lap top and installed it on the new one, again, without incident.  When I found that the icons for switching between tools in Photoshop and Illustrator were so small I could not see them, and they seemingly could not be adjusted within the program, I uninstalled the software, and at this point is when the software would not reinstall on the same computer it was on in the first place.  My software is official, on a physical disc, and registered to my account with Adobe.  What do I do?  I just opened this press five months ago, and I cannot justify a Creative Cloud membership with the amount of work I'm actually putting out at the moment, and especially not with the terrible customer service I have been receiving so far.
    Please help.

  • Hi, We have an application  built using HTMl 5 and Javascript running on IPad2, iOS5.1 Safari 5.1. When we try to download a file(.pvw file) in that application safari throws "Download failed" error. Please suggest what needs to be done.

    Hi,
We have an application  built using HTMl 5 and Javascript running on IPad2, iOS5.1 Safari 5.1.
When a file url is clicked instead of asking for Save or Open or Cancel options, the file gets opened on IPad by default.
Is this default behaviour which cannot be changed or can it be configured to ask user preference?
When we try to download a file(.pvw file -> a model file) in the above application, safari throws "Download failed" error.
Please suggest what needs to be done.
    Regards,
    Pramod

Safari on an iPad in general does not allow downloading of files. That's a safety precaution in the iOS SDK to keep unauthorized content off of iOS devices. Safari will open from the web site file types that it can handle, but direct downloading isn't normal behavior, and I don't believe the behavior can be changed, though you can try asking in the developer forum, either here or the one to which you have access as a member of Apple's iOS developer program.
    Regards.

  • Multiple domains names and web sites with only one SLS and one static IP

I tried to find a post on this topic but I still can't find what needs to be done.
SLS is configured for one domain with one web site and it's working well. We will call it domain1.com. Here is the config:
    Static IP: 69.x.x.x
    DNS setting under Server Admin:
    hostname: server.domain1.com
Two DNS entries under domain1.com with:
    www - alias - server.domain1.com
server - Machine - 10.0.1.x (fixe IP for server on LAN)
    Web settings under Server Admin:
    server.domain1.com - 10.0.1.x - Port 80
Domain1.com is managed with DynDNS Custom DNS Service with 1 record:
    domain1.com - A-record - 69.x.x.x
I want to host a second domain (for a website) called domain2.com. It's also registred at DynDNS and I have custom DNS setting to configure.
What's need to be done to have both domains with seperate web site on SLS under DNS and Web settings (beside the fact that I will have 2 different folders with the website files in it). I understand that I will need a new entry in the DNS for the new domain (domain2.com) and also an entry in the Web Service pane. But what are the details.
    Thanks.

When you said, "you don't need to do CNAME for both sites…", would this method still allow me to use personal web addresses for both sites?
Yes. With "Ordinary Forwarding" you normally just type your .Mac url (web.mac.com/username/sitename) into a form at the place where you have your name.
I thought I was using 'web.mac.com' as the 'www' CNAME (alias) for my personal domain name (web address), so that when someone typed in my personal domain name they would 'go' to the domain registration location, which would then pass it on to the .Mac server, where my web site is hosted.
That's exactly right. It's just not the only way to do that. Ordinary Forwarding is another way, but it differs in terms of what appears in the address bar of the browser. Either you will see web.mac.com/username/.... or, if you add "masking", you will see your personal name for all pages. The CNAME method results in a address bar that reads www.myname.com/sitename/pagename.html.
    Am I way off?

  • PeopleSoft Invoking BPEL process gets HTML returned and not XML

I am executing a SyncRequestXmlDoc in PeopleCode to call a BPEL process.
In an earlier demo environment this works fine and when I interrogate the log I get a correct Request and Response message :
I have now installed SOA Suite and I am deploying to that and I now have a problem with the Call.
It works.... but does not execute the BPEL Process.
Investigation has found that the PeopleTools Synchronous Message log shows the failing call as returning the HTML form of the BPEL process instead of the XML.
Detailed below are the request and response logs for the working process and then the failing process.
    The question is :
Is the BPEL process launched by SOA suite being returned in HTML form because of a setting or configuration issue or .... ?

Is this a setting or configuration problem in my SOA suite install ?
Needless to say the BPEL process does not execute.
    Can anyone help ?

    Hi Lonneke
    Thanks for responding....
You are correct in seeing that the two services are different in name.
However they are identical in function.
I created the service POSyncComp in my earlier version of JDev and deployed it to my local OC4J.
Which is launched by a PeopleSoft call using PeopleCode.
I have now rewritten this service in my new JDev and called it POSyncCompInt and deployed to home in an SOA suite implementation.
So whilst I test and before I roll the original service call out, I have both.
I have duplicated the PeopleCode and tweaked the message call, so that for testing purposes, and before I drop the current working version I have both calls in my PeopleCode event.
The original POSyncComp call still works, but the call to the 'new replacement' does not.
Hence the log shows both calls.... with slightly different names.
The strange thing is that the PeopleSoft LOG shows very similar code in the Request Message, but the response from the new call shows the HTML Form that I get if I run the second BPEL process from the SOA BPEL console.
So it looks like it is addressing the URL correctly.... but it suggests that stand alone OC4J returns a different response to the SOA suite which I am using for the new version of the BPEL process.... Is this configuration ?
It hints at the xsd file and the complex message type at entry to the BPEL process.
I can run the new process from the SOA suite BPEL Console with no problems.
I hope that clarifies your question about two different service names

I currently run the Design and Web Premium CS6 on a first generation MacBook Air and want to buy a new MacBook Pro. How do I know whether I can install my Adobe programs onto the new computer? Because I know there is some kind of limit.
Also, I had to install the software twice on my same computer before because I had to reboot the computer. I don't know if this affects the limit.

You are allowed to have two activated installations so there should not be a problem having working installations on the two machines.  If by chance you have somehow tied up two activations for the one machine you can have Adobe support help resolve that thru chat.

How do I create an Lightroom HTML Gallery and preserve the - in the file name?
The hyphen (-) is more search engine friendly, so I label all my photos using hyphens (-) to separate the keywords in the file name
Here's a sample file name - it's for the "Guess Where Berkeley" flickr site
    guess-where-berkeley-serkes-xx-s-curve.jpg
I created a Lightroom HTML Gallery and posted it to the following link.
    http://www.berkeleyhomes.com/tests/lightroom/lightroom-test-1/
Though it looksl like the HML gallery shows the original file name in the web page, it looks like Adobe Lightroom modified each photo's file name by changing the - (hyphen) to an underscore (_)
    Originally
    guess-where-berkeley-serkes-xx-s-curve.jpg
After Adobe created the HTML photo gallery the name became
    guess_where_berkeley_serkes_xx_s_curve.jpg
Is there any way to preserve the – rather than the _ character
    Thank you!

InDesign's interactive PDF support is a small subset of what you can do in Acrobat Profesional.
I think you probably want to create a button (or change an existing button) in Acrobat Pro that causes Acrobat to close the document -- that should be analagous to "exitting the CD." I assume your autorun file is opening the PDF in Adobe Reader? You have not included it and are not specific, so it is tough to say.
I believe in Acrobat Javascript you can close the document with this.closeDoc(). You'll probaly need to ask on the Acrobat forums (possiby Acrobat Scripting) for more detail.
