Html- writing servlet with a twist

Is there any benefit in having a servlet create an html page automatically, write it down into a .htm file and then use some redirect command to serve the html file to the client?
Later on, when the request is over, the servlet can delete the file.
Is there any usefulness in such configuration?
Thanks,
Chris

I agree these are 2 different paradigms. However, some variations of this are still used:
Message Boards
-Some message boards create an .html file and append to it (typically they do not delete).
Historical Reports
-Many companies need to keep hard (or soft) copies of reports generated.
Writing them to a file would accomplish this.
A TON of multimedia content
-If your HTML output has a ton (and I mean a ton) of multimedia content it would increase performance to write the HTML and redirect to the page, because you would not need to load the content in the VM and then have it served.
Server Limitations (EXTREME)
-I've seen 1 (count them 1) situation where the server was configured that only one instance of the servlet could run. To increase performance the programmer created the .html page on initialize and redirected as long as the file was created. She deleted the page when the servlet was unloaded. This is an extreme situation where the guy who was administoring the server was an idiot and did not want to work the developer!!!
Outside of these unique situations, I do not see a benifit to generating a static file.

  • Deploying Servlet with HTML file on Tomcat

    Hi ,
    I created a servlet and an html file. The html file accepts user data and passes it to servlet.
    I want to deploy these two files using Tomcat server. Please tell me a sure procedure for deploying both files.
    Regards,
    ap.

    First of all its better to make a jsp rather than one HTML and a servlet but anyhow in order to deploy it first build your project and create a war file which should contain your HTML and servlet and the web.xml.
    Then place this war file inside the webapps folder of tomcat.Start the tomcat and hit your HTML on the browser....

  • Looking for a convertor from HTML to PDF with J2SE

    Hi all,
    My current project would generate some XML data and display it on the web. Needless to say I have to prepare a matching set of XSL to transform the XML into HTML. I got that part done.
    However, my project also requires a PDF output of the same XML data for download. Well, I planned to do the XSL-fo stuff on it as well. But at some point the client thought since new kind of XML data may be added and it's too troublesome to maintain 2 sets of XSLs, they are requesting a converter to translate HTML directly into PDF now.
    I've searched the web, and found a few converter. But all of them are written in C and can't be embeded directly into my Java code. And my servlet might not have rights to call an external program on the production machine.
    I would appreciate very much if anyone can share their experience on similar issue, using a Java component to convert HTML into PDF. Suggestion of commercial products or open source freeware are all welcome.
    Thank you very much.

    HTML to PDF with Java, using OpenOffice.org - example here: [http://www.dancrintea.ro/html-to-pdf/|http://www.dancrintea.ro/html-to-pdf/]
    You can use OpenOffice.org, running as a server and command it remotely for document convertion.
    Besides HTML to PDF, there are also possible other convertions:
    doc --> pdf, html, txt, rtf
    xls --> pdf, html, csv
    ppt --> pdf, swf
    Code example:
    import officetools.OfficeFile; // this is my tools package
    FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(new File("c:/test.html"));
    FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(new File("c:/test.pdf"));
    // suppose OpenOffice.org runs on localhost, port 8100
    OfficeFile f = new OfficeFile(fis,"localhost","8100", true);
    f.convert(fos,"pdf");

  • Proxy servlet with reports

    Has any one used a proxy servlet with reports to hide all the URL parms???
    We are about to try this, so just wanted to see if any one has an comments or suggestions.

    Just in case you do not know the following
    You can also use cgicmd.dat file for mapping key-value pairs and then use the key in url
    The file is in $OH\reports\conf\cgicmd.dat
    you can define key like
    mykey1: report=test.rdf .....<other comd line args>
    and
    use key in url
    http://machine/servlet/rwservlet?mykey1
    More examples in that file itself

  • Jsp/html form- servlet- xml parsing

    does anyone have an example or know of a place where I can get code
    which passes XML from jsp/html to servlet which parses the xml???
    will be appreciated..........thanks

    Hi,
    Are u trying to acheive indpendent of browser solution or just want to know the things..
    well,I have one idea ok.
    Using JavaScript Constructs the XmL as u want, "let say
    <root><name>Lokesh</name><age>25</age></root>" before submitting the page(I mean frm.submit()) assign to a hidden variable, since you have post kind of submit back at the servlet from the request object get the value and store it as String and using StringReader you just parse the XML
    Just try the above one the below code
         public org.w3c.dom.Document getXMLDocument() throws IllegalStateException,Exception
                        if (!containsXMLDocument())
                                  throw new IllegalStateException("This request does not contain an XMLDocument");
                   javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory dbf=javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
                   javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilder db=dbf.newDocumentBuilder();
                   java.io.StringReader strRdr=new java.io.StringReader(_xmlString);
                   org.xml.sax.InputSource ipSrc=new org.xml.sax.InputSource(strRdr);
                   org.w3c.dom.Document doc=db.parse(ipSrc);
                   return doc;
    best of luck..

    Problem with Arabic font: In certain contexts, when writing Arabic with vowel signs (fatha, damma, kasra, sukun) a sequence of sukun + fatha/damma etc. would reverse automatically. Is this a known bug?

    You can't do Arabic on MS Word for Mac.  This app has never supported RTL scripts, so you need to use something else.  Mellel is best, but Pages 5, TextEdit, Nisus Writer, Open/LibreOffice should work OK.
    You switch between languages by using the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen or by using the keyboard shortcuts apple/command plus space.  Go to system prefs/keyboard/shortcuts to make sure that is activated.
    To see which key does what, you use Keyboard  Viewer.

    You place vowels on letters by typing the key for the vowel after the key for the letter.  The vowels are on the option/alt keys, option/alt + a gives you َ

    How to upload a file into server using j2ee jsp and servlet with bean? Please give me the reference or url about how to do that. If related to struts is more suitable.
    Anyone help me please!

    u don't need j2ee and struts to do file uploading. An example is as such
    in JSP. u use the <input> file tag like
    <input type="file"....>You need a bean to capture the file contents like
    class FileUploadObj {
        private FormFile srcFile;
        private byte[] fileContent;
        // all the getter and setter methods
    }Then in the servlet, you process the file for uploading

  • How to pass parameters to servlet with POST with  Business Service OSB

    Hi all.
    I am newby in OSB. I am trying to send some values through a POST call to a servlet. I know how to call the servlet with Business Service of type "Messaging Service". I send the parameters of type Text.
    I have tried several ways, but I don`t find the proper way yo do it. I have tried to insert the param into the body and into the header.
    The problem is that I don`t know exactly where to put them, I don`t know if it must be done in the header or in the boy. I neither don`t know if there is a common way to do this.
    Please, could you give me a good example of an insert activity to isert a post parameter inside the call?
    For example: now I am using this one:
    Expression => "accountType=test"
    Location => as first child of"
    XPATH => empty.
    In variable => body.
    Where do I have to insert this, in the body or in the outbounds?

    Hi,
    Please be carefull about passing values such as Strings or number that contains ',' .
    using the way described above.
    the best way is to pass an ID and then use a select Statement to get the other Values in the target page.
