HTML5 Playback causes choppy scrolling

HTML5 videos cause choppy scrolling - most notable when playing a YouTube video in a tab, and browsing in another one. If the video is paused there is no problem. Also, which is a bit weird, if I click on a YouTube video, and before it manages to fully load, switch to another tab, the scrolling is fine. If I switch back to the YouTube tab, it immediately gets choppy in all of Firefox. Similar problem with 9GAG gifs for example, so it's not just with YouTube.
All drivers are up to date. Windows 7 Professional N, hardware acceleration on or off makes no difference. Any ideas?

Also good to mention that if I switch to YouTube flash, the problem is gone, however Flash gives such a sh** performance, that I would rather tolerate a bit of choppy scroll than using the flash player :)

  • Logic Pro choppy scrolling after 10.8.4 update

I am trying to help out a composer who uses Logic Pro 9 on Mountain Lion. He has done all software updates so Logic is absolutey as up-to-date as possible.
He was on 10.8.1 and I recommended updating to 10.8.4
Ever since the 10.8.4 update, he is experiencing very choppy scrolling when scrolling up or down within Logic, but not left to right.
Booting from the old backup drive with 10.8.1 confirms the problem does not exist there, so something about the 10.8.4 update caused this.
Things we have tried to remedy the situation:
1 - Update his trackball driver
2 - Try a completely different mouse input device instead
    3 - Trash Logic's preferences
4 - Completely uninstall and reinstall Logic Pro
None of these things have fixed the situation.
Can anyone help? Thank you very much.

That is interesting info indeed. I appreciate it. I hope this can be fixed with a Logic or another 10.8.x update soon.
To clarify, I don't know that's what the problem is, your friend may have updated something else at the same time. Here in audio land the general advice is... "if it's not broken don't fix it". I still use Snow Leopard which is now 2 OSX upgrades behind the current version, but my system runs perfectly well and I see no need to upgrade.

  • FCP 7.0.3, 4x3Ghz CPU, 6GB Mem, RAID 10 but playback still choppy!

Hi,  this is a bit crazy.  I am editing a ProRez project and I would consider my MacPro reasonably powerful but when I play for 30 seconds or so the playback goes choppy.  I have to stop and start and then get another 30 second chunk playing smoothly, then choppy again.
I am not playing on a external motor or doing any type of playback preview, I do have a Blackmagic Intensity card but am not using it.
I have checked all the drive settings (User/System Settings) and they are all pointing to the RAID array.
RAID conested to Mac with FW 800.  I have done speed tests with blackmagic SW and got over 50MB/s read/write.  Project is 22 mins.  Format is ProRes 422. I am using Lion OS X.
    Any ideas?
    Ben
PS it now seems to be working a lot better but still cant play whole project.

Sorry, should have read your title more closely. Here's a handy reference doc on Pro Res specs. With respect to speed your setup should have no trouble. Do you have another drive you can use as a test media drive? Also, forgot to ask about available space on systems drive.

  • How to fix YouTube HTML5 playback?

All I want is to have 1080p available for YouTube with HTML5. The only way to achieve this I know of is enabling MSE (media source extensions). Enabling the required option [1] leads to stalled playback of videos. They don't play. Sometimes they do buffer. They may play for few seconds. Once they stall, it's done.
    Additional info:
It seems that when HTML5 playback ceases to work, Firefox will also refuse to close its process upon closing.

    Restarting without addons.

    Hello Ayanna R
Verify that you have done some of the other steps in the article below to resolve issues with audio playback. The only other advice I can give is updating iTunes.

  • Google Play Music HTML5 playback not working in Firefox

I can't seem to get Google Play Music to use HTML5 playback in Firefox. When I visit the library page it immediately complains that I don't have Flash installed. Then, when I try to start a track it again complains that I don't have flash installed. I have HTML5 audio enabled in the google labs settings. I also made sure that media.windows-media-foundation.enable is TRUE. (I've tried it using FALSE, also.) I have no add-ons installed/enabled at all. I really don't want to install flash (or Chrome which I'm guessing will work fine)... anyone have any ideas?

Side-note: it seems HTML5 playback works fine on other sites like Soundcloud... so it seems this is likely a Google issue, not a Firefox issue. But any ideas would still be appreciated.

  • Choppy scrolling in Firefox/Facebook

I beta tested Yosemite. That being said, when I was still running Mavericks, I had this awful problem in Firefox (especially on Facebook) where scrolling down got horribly choppy, and the rainbow spinny pinwheel would come up constantly. After installing beta 1 this ceased to be a problem, so I didn't give it much thought all through the betas. Today I've formatted, and did a clean install of the final release of Yosemite, and now the exact problem is back again! I am beyond annoyed. Does anyone else have this issue?
    Thanks
By the way, this problem is non-existent in Safari.

I'm also having similar issues with Chrome. When I switch between tabs it takes a couple seconds before the page shows up (even after it's already loaded). Also I have the choppy scrolling, and other apps take longer to open than they used to. I have a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro 13" with 750GB hard drive and 2.9 GHz. I'm assuming this is a Yosemite issue, rather than my computer as it ran flawlessly before.

  • I have choppy scrolling on pages with pictures

Lately I have slow and choppy scrolling on pages with pictures. I removed FLASH, fixed the .css file and disabled ALL Add-Ons but it did not help.
When I switch to the IE engine (with the Coral IE Tab addon) scrolling is smooth and nice.

I too had this problem after accidentally upgrading to 3.6.12. Ultimately, for me, the cure involved the following:
    1. Options-Advanced-General Tab- un-check Use Smooth Scrolling
If this doesn't help, then also do the following
    2. Disable Microsoft.NET Framework Assistant
This really resolved the issue-faster loading of pages and faster scrolling.

  • Audio waveform causing choppy playback

Having issues with nearly all Premiere cc 2014 (8.1) timelines where playback with audio track expanded to show waveform causes bad, choppy playback. As soon as i collapse the audio track playback is perfect. Not very useful when cutting interviews and needing to see waveforms.
Running a late 2013 mac pro 3.5ghz 6 core intel xeon e5 32gb ram all footage stored on a lacie 6tb thunderbolt.
    Any fixes or help appreciated
    Thanks

Everything's on the internal drive - a 320 gig 7200 rpm WD.  Still has ~120 gigs free.  The thing that's really getting me is that when I unplug the USB audio adapter, the video playback is fine.
There is an external drive for TM backups, but I just unplugged that to see if it was part of the issue and it doesn't seem to change anything.

  • Reverse Speed Causing Choppy Playback

I am using CC Premiere Pro 2014 and am getting choppy playback when I reverse the footage. The footage is slow and jumpy. The footage is mp4 shot at 24 fps. I have rendered the clip and still get the same results. Using a new souped up Mac and have cleared the cache so computer isn't the issue. Any way to fix this?

  • HTML5 playback issue when playing lots of html5 videos on a single page

    Hi,
I've got a use case where I need to play 48 to 150 videos per page and number of pages could be from few to thousands. I use html5 for video playback.
The video tag I use is the below one:
    <video width="20" height="20" autobuffer controls preload="none" ><source src="MY_VIDEO_WITHOUT_EXTENSION"type='video/webm; codecs="vp8,vorbis"'></video>
I have an Apache http server serving the videos. I store the videos without the extension so I've modified the httpd.conf and added "DefaultType video/mp4" since all videos have been transcoded to mp4 with h.264/mpeg-4 with AAC audio.
I created a simple html with the above video tag repeated 46 times with each having a different source. The videos are of varying lengths from few minutes to close to an hour. I noticed that I can play the first few videos - around 15 of them. I pause each video before playing the next one. After 15 videos or so, I start seeing the loading icon and the video just won't play no matter how long I wait.
I used firebug to see what's happening and noticed that it is waiting on the GET request. I see no incoming requests on the apache server logs for those failed videos.
If i reload the page and play those videos that didn't play earlier they would play without any issue till I reach the number of videos i've selected to play around 15 or so and then the problem starts again. The problem is not with the videos since they play at one time or the other based on what videos I choose to play first. I have no other tabs open that may interfere with this.
I noticed that I do not have this problem on Google Chrome, all videos play without any issues. So, it looks like it is a firefox issue. I have the latest FF and Chrome btw.
I added "browser.cache.memory.capacity" property and set it to 1GB but it still didn't help. The memory and CPU usage on the task manager is not significant enough to be the cause of this issue. I have 32GB RAM and 6core CPU. And its not just my desktop, its several other desktops that have this issue.
Even if I remove the codecs and use type='video/mp4', it doesn't work. I've tried removing autobuffer and it behaves the same.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    -G

    Sorry,
The video tag I use is the below one:

  • Any kind of video playback is choppy, eventually stops

So a couple weeks ago I dropped my macbook flat, upside down, from about 3 feet up, on a wooden floor. I died a little inside. Since then, it has been acting up. Any kind of video playback (html5, flash, quicktime, etc.) is great at the beginning, but then gets choppy, and eventually just comes to a stop. The weirdest part about this, is that I can avoid this, ONLY if I constantly move the cursor around while the video is playing! You all probably think I'm an idiot, but I have done extensive testing on this, and its definitely the mouse movement (trackpad or bluetooth mouse, either way), that keeps the video playing smoothly. As well as the video playback, my computer will sometimes not wake up from sleep, and when I do an emergency shutdown (hold the power button down til it shuts off), and fire it back up, it tells me to do another emergency shutdown, and will continue to do so until i remove the battery, replace it, and start it up again.
After this "behaviour" persisted for a few days, I did an erase and re-install of snow leopard (didn't make a difference), and I also removed/replaced my hard drive and ram, just for good measure.
Please, can someone tell me what the heck is going on, and maybe give me an idea of how much this is gonna cost me to fix (as I am clearly out of warrantee)?
    Thanks so much,
    Bobby

This is all most unfortunate...from what I read in your post you have covered everything that can be done at your end....something is damaged on the Logic Board it sounds like...as to how much it would cost only the people that end repairing will know after it is diagnosed....take it in...tell them what you have found and tried so far...maybe that will help narrow down the problem...
    Good Luck....

  • ITunes 11 HD video playback slow/choppy/stutter/skipping in OSX

    Hi guys,
I'm running iTunes 11.0.1 in OS 10.8.2 on my 2.66 GHzm, 8 GB RAM MacBook Pro and playback in HD (1080p) movies/TV shows in iTunes is slow, choppy, stuttering and skipping. Can't seem to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I was having this same problem, and found one cause.
I have an extensive library on a Drobo FS.  None of the AppleTV's in the house have any problem streaming full 1080p from it, but my new iMac does.  Choppy / laggy video play.  Movies and TV shows right from the iTunes store.  I can have 3 TV's streaming, and even a 4th laptop, all streaming from the iMac iTunes using the Drobo.  They all have zero issues.  No lag, no choppy, nothing.  iMac has the issue even when nothing else is running.  Every time.
BTW, it's happend on my old iMac and the brand new one, both with iTunes 11.
I was told to try setting up a second account on my iMac, and try playing video there.  It worked.  No problems at all.  Weird.
So I started looking at differences between the new account, and my standard.  I'd already made sure nothing unusual was running, and no processor hogs (not that anything short of Handbrake at full settings has come close to pegging out the processers on the new box).  I found one thing, that made a difference.  I had Timemachine backups, going to the same Drobo FS (though a different partition) turned on on the iMac.
Timemachine was running the whole time, and didn't impact any other streaming from the same machine, but it did make iTunes video playback of 1080p movies skip like my 6 year old daughter on the iMac.  I turned it off.... no more skipping.  I've watched 5 TV shows and 2 movies on that account, and not had another single incident.
Obviously, there is still a problem.  The iMac and Drobo have enough bandwidth that they can do all the work at the same time (or I'd be seeing the problem on the other devices while streaming), but they are not playing well together on the same account.  I've also checked the throughput to the Drobo FS from the iMac... way more than necessary.  If it were a read / write thing on the Drobo, then I'd expect other devices to see the issue when I'm watching something on the iMac that is skipping, but there was still no skipping on any other device at that same time...
But, as I said, I found the root cause in my case.  I can turn off Timemachine backups while I'm watching a movie on the iMac, or I can move where I write the Timemachine backups to (going to try this over the weekend to be sure it works).  If moving the Timemachine backup to a different drive doesn't work, it's a bigger problem.
I'd really love to see Apple fix this and the issue where I have to turn iTunes on in 32bit mode when using an external library (of it gives the funky quicktime error until you delete and readd the movie).
Hope this helps some of you, if not all.

  • Metallic blips interrupt playback, cause computer lag, iTunes library gradually depleted

I didn't realize there would be a comment box
here's the story friends, perhaps you can help me!
This has not been an issue with any of my other pcs. I am running Windows 7 on a (cheap) Gateway I bought this summer. I keep ALL of my music on an external terabyte and have never encountered problems with external HD music in iTunes on another machine.
Since loading iTunes onto this computer, I have experienced:
-metallic, buzzing interruptions to music playback with no discernible pattern or cause. All programs can be closed, or open, machine can be active or relatively inactive, and i will hear this sound intermittently and indiscriminately, regardless. I can listen to a song on repeat, for example, and the buzzing will happen multiple times in one playback, none in another, and several times again, in different places, in a third playback. This would indicate to me some kind of external influence, but those factors are not consistent either.
    - slow depletion of library. iTunes will, after an uncertain amount of time (i have not clocked it because I had not thought it to recur again), begin to lose connection to files. I will open up iTunes and songs I was recently listening to will have exclamation marks next to them, indicative of a missing file that the program could not locate. When I double-click on them, it states it's unable to find the file and when I attempt to find it where all my music is stored, I frequently CAN'T.
Due to this, I have deleted my library, approximately 50G, three times and re-imported it all at once thereafter, each time. The missing songs will reappear in working order, and even those I was not aware I'd lost will return.
I did this about a month and a half ago, I think, and now files are disappearing again.
Does ANYONE have the slightest inkling of what's going on here? I am very frustrated, obviously, because I have used iTunes for over 5 years and have put a good deal of money into it that cannot be transferred to another platform. I would be elated to even hear from someone with a similar problem.

when i play videos off youtube, many times it is choppy and very laggy.  could there be a setting to improve video playback, or is it likely my wifi /internet is too slow?  although no problem on mac book, or imac??

Have you tried when conected to another network? Your performance is typical of a network problem.

  • What causes choppy streaming video?

I have a problem with playing streaming video on my powerbook. The video is choppy but the sound is fine. What exactly causes that? I have a 6 Mbps DSL connection at the house, so I figured it was something internal with the Powerbook. Would this be a graphics card, RAM, or processor issue?? I'm not quite sure. Or is it just a matter of changing a setting?

    Hi BJ,
Not to state the obvious, but video requires significantly more bandwith than audio.
What app are you using to stream? What is its internet connection speed set at? What speed does the stream show it's streaming at?
