Huge memory leaks after upgrading from kernel 2.6.38(?)

My system began leaking memory some months ago and I've little to no idea what is causing it. The closest hint I can give is that I think these problems started around upgrading from Linux 2.6.38 to 2.6.39 and have continued with 3.0 aswell. Sometimes my whole system freezes due to extensive swapping (HDD usage led stays lit), sometimes it stops after consuming almost all of my 4 GB RAM.
I think the leak has to come from inside the kernel because all sysmon apps claim no application is eating too much RAM yet the system memory consumption is at 100 % or even using swap. Even after I kill Xorg the memory usage will stay at least at 2.0 GB, when it should be less than half a gig.
I'd like to guess the blame is on Nouveau, because it was giving me a hell of a time back with Linux 2.6.39. It had a habit of freezing my system when re-enabling suspended compositing (both with Kwin and Mutter). Also video playback was corrupted sometimes. These probs have since been fixed with Linux 3.0.
I cannot name any spesific app that might trigger this memory leaking. I don't play any games and mainly use Firefox, Chromium and VLC day in, day out.
There seems to be absolutely no way of reclaiming the reserved memory than rebooting the whole system. I have even tried unloading Nouveau.
I am currently running the [testing] repo with ~daily upgrades.

OK, this kind of surprised me. No wonder I couldn't find any relevant stuff while googling for kernel issues. I have had Strigi disabled for some time now because it is miserably broken, but I now disabled the whole Nepomuk too. Let's see if my problem now goes away or what...
The release of KDE 4.7 Beta 1 actually lines up with the launch of Linux 2.6.39 so this really might be the case. I moved to KDE 4.7 already with the first beta.

  • Memory leak after upgrading to ColdFusion 10

We recently upgraded from CF8 to CF10 and we're running into some issues.  We started off getting a lot of OutOfMemory errors with the default heap settings. Chaning them to 768MB/1280MB which has helped, but we're still running into occasional OOM issues.  We took a heapdump as the instance was having problems today with blocked threads and noticed the heap usage was near the max so it was probably going to run out of memory soon too.  Below is what the eclipse memory analyzer tool found as a possible leak suspect.  Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go from here?  Not sure if it's an issue with CF itself or something in the app.  Thanks

    Hi Sharma,
Here's the settings summary from the console.  The OOM issue is now happening about 1-2 times weekly after increasing the heap size.  Before that it was almost daily.  It seems we can go about 75-85 hours before we restart due to either OOM or blocked threads.

  • Can't undo a Huge Mouse Pointer after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard.

I did an upgrade from Leopard to Tiger.
When I was on Tiger, I had a setting for a huge mouse pointer. I upgraded to Leopard. No matter how many times I reset the pointer to small, when restarting it goes back to huge.
    How can I fix this?

    gaccawi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
No matter how many times I reset the pointer to small, when restarting it goes back to huge.
That statement indicates to me that you have made this attempt using System Preferences>Universal Access>Mouse>For difficulties seeing the mouse...Normal.
If that is the true, have you previously installed any third party pointer software?
    ;~)

  • Memory leak after connect from Weblogic 8.1 to oracle 9.1.2

    Hi,
I have a application migrated from Weblogic 6.1 to Weblogic 8.1. It is working
fine in weblogic 6.1. But it has memmory leak in weblogic 8.1. My current system
    is
    Solaris 9 with weblogic 8.1(SP2)
    Solaris 9 with oralce 9i
The problem happen when the application is running for some time. All memory
is ate out in oracle instance. But the weblogic is alive. And in fact oracle
is alive too but it is not allowed for any future connection. Then after that,
all hang. We need to restart both webligc and oracle instances.
Does anyone can help on this? Is any specicial things in weblogic 8.1 for JDBC
    connection? Thank you very much.

As said, he performed the upgrade and now we can't start the DB, anybody that had the same issue?
We run on AIX 5.3 and from the unix side, nothing changed. After 7.5 we plan on going to 7.6 but that is in the stars I guess...
We posted a high message with SAP and since over 10 hours nobody picked the message up... we are getting kind of desperate... Any pointers are appreciated...
    thanks

    Hello Thomas,
-> If you run the database update using the database update tool, the permissions/ownership will be set correctly for the database software & the permissions/ownership of the database log files will be also changed correctly.
Please check the upgrade log in the /sapdb/data/wrk
-> Please check the ownership of the files in the database RUNDIRECTORY.
For example, if the database owner:group of your database is sdb:sdba, then
    -rw-rw----   1  sdb        sdba  u2026.     knltrace
-> Please update the thread with the output of the following commands :
               sdbregview -l
               xinstinfo SD3
               id sdb
              ls -l <runditectory>
< rundirectory is the database parameter value and by default is /sapdb/data/wrk/SD3 >
            more /etc/opt/sdb
Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina

  • My Arch is very slow after upgrading to kernel 3.0

Hi men! This is my first post on this forum, i'm italian and i'm using archlinux since 4 months (sorry if my english is bad)...  I would like you to help me to solve a problem: as i wrote in object  my system has became very slow after upgrading to kernel 3.0: system booting, applications launch, general responses of my tasks....what's the problem? How can i resolve it? Thanks!!

However the kernel26-lts looks slower than 3.0 so i returned to the last one...iìm going to see dmesg outputs...i've to remove "quiet" from the grub.cfg
EDIT: I've checked but no error is shown....this is dmesg.log:

  • Firefox 4.0 RC has huge memory leak + slow down problem

Firefox 4.0 RC Seems to have a huge memory leak issue. After leaving the program open for around half an hour the RAM usage climbs to over 1 gb.
However, I have 12 gb of physical ram, so firefox staking 1 gb for itself is not too big of a problem (and is probably a blessing as it means it's caching more data), but the problem is that the UI begins to slow down and become clunky after about 30 minutes.
Browsing, switching tabs, even typing becomes jittery and not very responsive.
This happens regardless of how many tabs I have open.
Now it's also crashing every once in a while.

Even with Firefox 4.0 (Release) running in Safe Mode, with all add-ons and themes disabled, I'm still inclined to think there's something screwy going on here.
I was watching Page Faults/sec, Page File Bytes and Working Set in Performance Monitor and tailing the Privoxy log for requests. Even with Firefox minimized and "doing nothing" (making no requests, anyway), over the space of a 10 minute period the Working Set grew from 244,375,552 bytes to 274,939,004 bytes (averaging 50,939 bytes/second). This behaviour doesn't seem consistent though - sometimes it doesn't seem to grow at all.
Additionally the Page Faults/Sec went nuts, accompanied by a step in Page File Bytes and Working Set, whenever a request got made to http://safebrowsing.clients.google.com/safebrowsing/downloads which seems to happens on a regular basis (approximately every 30 minutes).

  • Firefox 17 huge memory leak

Since the last update today, Firefox seems to got a huge memory leak. After one hour idle on some pages it was up to 750MB memory usage, and constant 100% load of one CPU core.
Looks like something is not going well with the garbage collection, if I visit http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/forums/forum/forum-category-2/ for example.
Had to disable the graphic hardware acceleration, because of the newly introduced "clear type" font bug.
Edit: May also be related to mail.google.com, which I have running in an app tab.

For what it's worth, I had exactly the same problem (except that it's on Linux) since the upgrade to 17.0. When I disabled greasemonkey, the problem instantly disappeared, so it looks like the compatibility with greasemonkey got broken.
Likewise, I'm very disappointed with the frequent bugs/annoyances that come with the rolling upgrade system; I find myself more and more using Chromium because of it. Mozilla really needs to give people the option to run a stable branch that receives security updates only.

  • Tvtime not working after upgrading to kernel-2.6.31-1 (Solved)

    Hello friends,
When I am using kernel-2.6.30.8 it was everything ok with my system. tvtime has been working with least cpu utilization then. But after upgrading to kernel-2.6.31-1 I got following error messages when trying to open tvtime
    damu@station210 ~]$ tvtime
    Running tvtime 1.0.2.
    Reading configuration from /etc/tvtime/tvtime.xml

What happened to driver and kernel? any way to go back to previous kernel version?
    Requesting help! Thanks

Try disabling KMS by appending nomodeset to the kernel parameters. At the moment kms ist not usable without upgrading some libs (mesa?, libdrm?). Search the forums for kms to get more information.
    Thanks Perry3D
I disabled KMS as per http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI. Now tvtime is working great. With the release of kernel 2.6.32 KMS can be enabled for ati card with radeon3200 chips

  • Remote Desktop Connection stop working after upgrade from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1

I too could not connect to a W2K3 server with RDC 2.0.1 after upgrading from Mac OS X, 10.5.8 to 10.6/10.6.1. I have another Mac which is on 10.5.8 and connect fine with the same version of RDC 2.0.1 as well as other PC with Terminal Service Clients.
There is no change on the server side. I have uninstalled and reinstalled RDC 2.0.1 several time and it did not resolve the issue. To rule out firewall/network, I tested with another remote desktop application called CoRD (for Mac) on the same laptop running SL 10.6.1 and it connected to the same W2K3 server fine.
One thing that is worth mentioning (in my case), when it does not connect, RDC totally quit (not running anymore. Not minimize, no cannot connect error message, no little dot on the Dock for RDC, nothing) right after I put in the credential in. Doing some more troubleshooting after my post above as I saw a couple of entries referencing Stop Light keep popping up in the log of the Console. I removed Stoplight and Cocoa Gesture (for good meausre) and RDC 2.0.1 started working. I think it is Stop Light which causes RDC stop working, but I don't have to time right now to put Cocoa Gesture back to confirm that. I might if I have the time or post here if you have Stop Light installed as well and removing it resolved the RDC issue for you.

  • Graphics instability and crashing after upgrade from FF 32 to 33

Soon after upgrading from 32.0.3 to 33 (Windows 7), I was seeing occasional flicker-like split-second black flashes. (I *think* this was mostly when opening new pages, but I don't recall for sure...maybe also when scrolling). Then a few minutes later I was scrolling a page with my laptop touchpad and the screen flashed completely black, stayed that way for about a second, and then came back up with a Windows message that Intel Graphics had recovered from a crash. (Which is doubly interesting given that FF set to use my discrete NVIDIA graphics on this computer.). I haven't seen anything like this happen in the nine months I've had this laptop, with or without FF open. There was also a message that FF had crashed.
Then I restarted FF, and all was going OK, except that I believe I still saw a few split-second "in the blink of an eye" black screens as I opened new pages. But then I went to Google Maps, and was dragging a map upwards. But instead of the lower portion of the map moving into view, I only got a blank white screen. The further up I dragged the map, the more of the the screen that was blank white, until it was completely white. Then FF crashed again.
I thought the new FF native H.264 might be causing the issue so I disabled it and restarted FF. But then I went back to Google Maps, tried the same thing and had the same issue (but no associated crash, although I closed FF very soon after I saw the odd graphics behavior recurring so maybe I didn't give it enough "time to crash").
I re-installed 32.0.3 and all the issues went away. FWIW, I've had occasional crashes and slowdowns with 32 and other recent versions. (I could recover from the slowdowns just by restarting FF.) Most of those issues seemed to be associated with Adobe Flash. That behavior was an occasional annoyance but nothing of the magnitude of what happened when I tried FF 33. I don't know if this latter observation adds anything, but I just thought I'd throw it out there. Fyi, the laptop has 2.4 Ghz CPU (Intel i7) and 16GB memory.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

Today when I noted that Lenovo still hadn't released an updated driver specifically for the Intel Graphics, I went back and installed a Lenovo NVIDIA Optimus update that I had tried 4 or 5 months ago but had subsequently reversed because it had created problems with Firefox. (Specifically, it was causing Firefox context menus to render slowly and incompletely.) Not only does the NVIDIA update no longer cause the FF context menu problem, it seems to have *solved* the problem I posted about here. It updated the NVIDIA driver ("GPU #2" above) from version 9.18.13.1269 to version 9.18.13.3302.
This makes some intuitive sense, since -- as I said above -- I have Optimus set to use the NVIDIA graphics with Firefox instead of Intel. (I had thought that, based on what I read in Lenovo support, the NVIDIA Optimus update might install a new Intel Graphics driver as well, but the Intel driver is still shown as the same version listed above (8.15.10.2725). (I don't know whether or not these driver numbers might be Lenovo-specific.)
Anyway, the NVIDIA Optimus update fixed my problem, so thanks for pointing me in the direction of graphics drivers. (I suppose there's also a small possibility that something had simply gone awry with my first update to FF 33, and that what really solved things was simply reinstallingl...)

  • Upgrading from Kernel 3.0.7 (keyboard/mouse dont work)

    Hey,
when i upgrade, from Kernel version 3.0.7 to something newer (3.1/3.2)
i get odd problems after reboot:
    - resolution is wrong
    - keyboard and mouse don't work
I have to restart via powerbutton and downgrade to use my system.
For now i ignore kernel upgrades.
    I have and Thinkpad T420s.
How can i find out whats wrong?
    Thanks,

Does your keyboard not work at all or only in X? If your keyboard doesn't work at all, boot into a live CD (so that your keyboard works) and post your /var/log/everything.log. If your keyboard works everywhere but in X, post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
-- edit: If you are positive that you ONLY upgraded your kernel, just boot a live CD and post your everything.log.

  • Issue after upgrading SOLMAN-Kernel to 700-201

    Hi Gurus,
I have upgraded SOLMAN Kernel from 700-144 to 700-201. I have done step by step upgrade i.e.,
    700-147 to 700-175 - No issues
    700-175 to 700-201 - Server started partially.
In the Console, the server is partially started after upgrading from 175 to 201(Yellow and Green).
"Dispatcher Running but not connected to Message Server, J2EE: All processes  running"
I am able to login to all clients as well as J2EE.
are there any patch or any OSS notes to implement after upgrading to Kernel 700-201?
    SOLMAN:
    SP-17
    WIN-32
    Thanks in advance...
    Regards
    Shreeshail Ganiger

    Dear Shreeshail,
Try to upgrade your kernel to 221, there are quite issues with 201for some installations.
Check if your satstartsrv.exe has been updated with new version too. this you can check with file version by right clicking.
    Regards

  • Bad performance on CF9 after upgrade from CF8

Hello and happy new year for everybody
I'm stuck with a problem after upgrade from CF8 entreprise to CF9 entreprise.
    We are using IIS6 on WIN2003R2 (SP2).
There are a lot of  "503 Server Error" with no content. (about 0.05% of request). This can be occured on big or small CFM, graphic ressources, etc...
For each error I can see the following error on the connector logs (jrun_iis6_wildcardYYMMDD.log).
2011-01-02 19:00:05 jrISAPI[1456:3940]  returning error page for JRun too busy or out of memory
I've never seen this message in previous CF connector version.
And on the jrun log (coldfusion-outXXX.log), I read the following errors:

There is no line about a memory issue!
These errors happening on random request not ALL!! (arround 0.05%), and there is no real link between load and this... Our applications handle a lot of POST download, but like I've described before, error can occured on classic cfm page and static ressource...
What I mean with upgrade CF8 to CF9, is with our 10 other servers running on CF8, I've never see that 503 issue outside a real jrun problem (like a memory crash, restart, etc...)
    @Carl:
Server is running on WIN2003R2SP2 32 bits OS (dual Xeon E5506, 4Go RAM). Here is the jvm.config arguments:
    # Arguments to VM

Do you know if it should be possible to try old JRun connector used by CF8 ?
