Huge SharePoint_Config Database/Timer Job History Overflow

Hello All,
I know there are quite a few sites about this issue, but none of them seem to work for me so I was hoping for some help.
Just for reference, this is in my dev environment on a VM running:
SP2010
SQL Server 2008 R2
Windows Server 2008 R2
It is the same old story of SharePoint's "Delete Job History" timer job not running and therefor the “TimerJobHistory” database table growing massive. For the last couple of months
my drive keeps running out of space and putting a halt to my work. So I went to the Net looking for a solution. I found a few that looked promising, but either caused more problems or simply did not work. Now that I have my environment back up and running
I was hoping for some help in solving this.
Does anyone know how to purge the “TimerJobHistory” table so my SharePoint_Config database will not keep filling up my space? From there is there anyway to prevent this from happening again?
The “Delete Job History” will not run currently even though I have adjusted the days to keep history and increased the duration that the job should run.
So far here is what I tried and the results:
http://sharepoint.it-professional.co.uk/?p=228 – Runs for a while and seems promising, but keeps growing the log and database
file until out of space, then crashes. I have to spend a lot of time freeing up space, detaching, and reattaching the config database. At this point I have removed everything from that drive that I can so no more space can be freed.
Shrinking files – This is only a temporary fix and I heard that it is a bad idea to do this more than once every now and again anyway. I am sure my database is already fragmented terribly
(which also if anyone can point me to a working solution for defragging in SQL Server 2008 R2 I would greatly appreciate it.)
There are a number of other sites that make recommendations that seem to be… well… less than what would be considered a “good practice” so I avoided those.
For the time being I have done what I had hoped not to and turned the SharePoint Timer service off to prevent the database from filling up again. If I turn it back on the log fill will be full
in a matter of seconds which will move me back to no space and in a bad position.
This seems to be happening to all the devs here, but I got a bit too brave and tried to find a solution… I learn a lot from my mistakes though!
If any other information is needed, please let me know.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks,
J.

Hi,
We need to reduce the amount of data being deleted by the timer job during each run, so I need to modify the daystokeephistory value of the timer job.
The following PowerShell script for your reference:
$history = Get-SPTimerJob | Where-Object {$_.name -eq "job-delete-job-history"}
$history.daystokeephistory = 25
$history.update()
$history.runnow()

  • Is there a relationship between InfoPath and the "Solution Approval" and "Solution Unpublish" timer jobs?

    One of our developers has a test SP 2010, service pack 2 system. Against it, he is testing form library InfoPath 2010 applications that he is developing.
    There are, over the 2 months he has been working, an increasing number of times that the machine becomes so slow as to be unusable. For instance, in his attempt to publish an updated form this morning, the publish time was about 2 hours.
    I see nothing obvious in the event log.
    However, in the 5.7 million line 14 hive log, there are 5.6 million lines of the form:
    Solution Deployment : Deleting directory C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\Template\Features\FT-01-6d499aed-f899-c88e-5f7e-8dad243ccaf1\solution.xsn.1.0.0.1018.1.0.0.735. Delete if not empty.   ae8f490c-f1bf-4f25-92aa-6fc8e0de7de5
    When I look in the Features subfolder, there are over 13k of folders containing a solutions.xsn and a DLL with the name of the application.
    These folders date back to when the work began.
    When I look at timer job history , all I see are status of Succeeded.
    But I do notice that every minute a series of 6 Solution Approval and 6 Solution Unpublish timer jobs run.
    Since the timer says to run every minute, I suspect that something is wrong with the jobs.
    This being a test machine, there is no reason to have 13k of old copies of the form and dll. He is not going back to one of those as far as I am aware.
    Is there some action that he should be taking that should be "cleaning up" this situation?
    Is there something that a SP admin could do to clean things up so that things no longer take so long to run and create such large log files?
    Thanks for your ideas.

    Nate

    Thank you Trevor,
    As per this blog (http://www.houberg.com/2008/05/16/sharepoint-database-indexes-and-statistics/) it seems like
    Microsoft allows this (not explicitly though)
    I ran the Health Analyzer rule  for "Databases used by SharePoint have fragmented Indexes" for all servers.
    I am still seeing a lot of cluster and non clustered indexes having avg_fragmentation_in_percent
     > 60%.
    SELECT * FROM sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats (7, NULL, NULL, NULL , 'DETAILED');
    I finally thought that I should rebuild the indexes to fix the issue, but please suggest if that is not the correct approach to resolve the high fragmented indexes.
    thanks

  • SQL Server Agent - Job History not being recorded (SQL Server 2005)

    I have been trying to get to the bottom of an issue with SQL Server Agent not recording any job history. I am using SQL Server 2005 on a single Windows Server 2008 machine (i.e. no other domain controllers/active directory servers).
    The SQL Server Agent service is configured to 'Log On As' NT user account 'sqlagent'. The jobs themselves are executed successfully (all 'Transact-SQL' type steps actually use the 'sa' account) however the there is no actual job history to be found for any
    of the jobs -- in the SQL Activity monitor, the 'Last Run Outcome' is always 'Unknown' and the 'Last Run' date is always 'Never' for all jobs; in the SQL Job History Viewer there are no entries for any instances of a job being executed.
    The 'sqlagent' NT user account ia a member of the 'Administrators' NT group; the 'Administrators' group appears under Security > Logins on the database server. I have another server that also uses the same setup with a 'sqlagent' NT user account, on that
    database server the 'sqlagent' user account appears under Security > Logins and the SQL job history works correctly. I have attempted to add the 'sqlagent' to the Logins on the affected server using the SQL Server Surface Area configuration but this operation
    returns an error, detailed below.
    Additionally, I have attempted to use the built-in NT system account 'NETWORKSEVICES' to run the SQL Agent Service but this also results in exceptions in the error log and no job history being recorded. The entries in the error logs are very similar to those
    from the 'sqlagent' NT user account but instead the user is referred to as 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON' in the error logs, again these are detailed below.
    Many thanks in advance for anyone's time and help with this issue!
    Arthur
    The following errors are raised in SQL Server Agent > Error Logs each time a job is executed:

    I have tried granting the 'sqlagent' NT user account with SysAdmin Server Role privaledges using the SQL Server User Provisioning tool in SQL Server Surface Area Configuration, but this always throws the following, similar error:

    Hi Rama,
    Thanks for your reply. I have run the query you specified and can see only one entry with "NTLM" in the auth_scheme column, all of the rest have "SQL". It figures that the entry with "NTLM" is relating to the one NT user account that can successfully log
    in to the service (as mentioned in my reply to Nag above, this is the NT user account that installed the service on the machine). I have also executed the same query on the other machine that I mentioned in my original post and this contains two "NTLM" entries,
    I'd assume that these relate to the NT user that installed the software and the correctly working "sqlagent" NT user account that is correctly logging the job history on that machine.
    I think the problem is very much to do with granting access to new NT user accounts, as per the KB article that you have quoted above. In this case, it is not relating to scenarios 1 or 2 as these relate to SQL Server logins and this issue is about a Windows
    Authentication login. As I mentioned to Nag above, I am unable to grant any NT user accounts with access to the service however the NT accounts are all defined locally on the same machine as the SQL server is installed (i.e. there is no domain controller,
    active directory controller, etc) so I don't understand how the Windows login cannot be verified.
    Any further advice on the issue would be greatly appreciated, please let me know if there is any more information I can provide to help diagnose the problem.
    Many thanks!

  • Need help on TRacking Jobs history of an ETL package

    Hello there, Kindly Elaborate me the way to track Job history of my ETL package.
    For Sample I am running that package on my local Server.
    i need a SQL Server tAble, Which Gives me following information
    -Name of the package
    -TYpe of job.: Etl or TSql
    -Is_SuccessRun
    -LAst run time
    -ErrorRun
    -Last Execution time Taken by the ETL.
    Kindly Guide me on this,
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Aditya,
    We cannot integrate the package execution information into the job history.
    This sysssislog table is created in the msdb database when we install SQL Server Integration Services. If you configure logging to log to a different SQL Server database, a sysssislog table with this format is created in the specified database. So, whether
    the sysssislog table in the MSDB database or in a specified database depends on how you create the connection manager for the SSIS log provider for SQL Server, and either one is okay.
    For more information about implementing SQL Server logging, please see:
    http://www.bidn.com/blogs/ShawnHarrison/ssis/2436/basics-of-ssis-logging-part-1-enabling-and-using-sql-server-provider
    http://www.msbiguide.com/2013/10/logging-in-ssis-sql-server-log-provider/
    In addition, you can implement custom logging using event handlers:

  • Force immediate alerts timer job to run on a particular server

    In Central Admin->Manage Content Database->Preferred server for timer jobs says "Not selected".  We have 2 WFE servers, server1 and server2.  server1 currently is not able to connect to the smtp server so we would like for the immediate
    alerts timer job to be executed on server2 which has access to smtp.  I know I could set the preferred server for timer jobs to be server2 but that would mean that all timer jobs would execute on that server.
    I have a few questions:
    1. Is there a way to force just immediate alert timer job to run on server2?
    2. How can I find out which server is currently processing the immediate alerts timer job (or which server processed the last immediate alerts timer job)
    3.  If I force all timer jobs to execute on server2, how much of an effect does it have on the server in terms of RAM, CPU and other resources?
    thanks,

    What i believe is, alerts timer jobs is ContentDatabase Locktype so if you select the prefred server from the Central admin.
    I am sure, all the timer jobs which having the ContentDB lock type will run on preferred server.
     Note that content database locks are handled at the server and database level, not at the individual job level.
    The Article Trevor mentioned is great for explanation.
    2.) you can check it from the Central admin > Monitoring  > Job History and from here select the job definition which history you want
    to see.
    3)you forcing all timer jobs in one server that's mean you are increasing the over head for that server so performance may be issue. Its depend how many user / load you already have
    on the server. another thing, may be deadlock between the jobs i.e if one job took more time and other jobs wait for it ends up skipping it.
    Please remember to mark your question as answered &Vote helpful,if this solves/helps your problem. ****************************************************************************************** Thanks -WS MCITP(SharePoint 2010, 2013) Blog: http://wscheema.com/blog

    Hi All
    Please give me some advice about this Data-driven Subscription runs every hour misses out once or twice a day, but the subscription job history shows it ran sucessfull but it doesnt trigger the e-mail out.
    Is there a way to check on subscription logs that SSRS has triggered the report out to the e-mail server.
    Is there a way to add add logs for the e-mail part to make sure it has sent out the email ?
    Nothing in the E-mail server logs to show this report email was requested / delivered / rejected by it.
    So - Kindy advice me how can I proceed my findings on this.

  • Job History stopped updating

    I am running Oracle Management Server on Red Hat Enterprise 3. Everything has worked flawlessly for the last 9 months (the time at which I implemented it). Now out of nowhere, completed jobs stopped showing up in the job history tab in OEM. I have check the filesystems of my database servers (the jobs are daily RMAN backups) and the files are up to date. RMAN even reports the backups as being completed. But job history stopped updating on September 24th.
    Has anyone ever seen this or have any suggestions?

    Where is that setting? I do delete entries in the job history on a monthly basis.

  • Format of Date Field in RAR background job history page

    Hi Everyone,
    Is it possible to customize the format of the fileds: "last run", "next start" in RAR background job history page?
    By default it is in the format yyyy-mm-dd.
    I am just wondering my customer's requirement is possible or not?

    Hi,
    There is no option to set the date format in the Configuration settings. Check the FM /VIRSA/ZCC_GET_STATREC_DATA which has the CALL FUNCTION 'GET_SYSTEM_TIMEZONE'. RAR will read the time from the system.
    You may look at formatting the the date format here.
    Hope this helps!!
    Warm Regards,
    Raghu

  • Create Timer Jobs dynamically using code (on the fly)

    What I am trying to accomplish here is different from the usual "Create and deploy a new custom timer job". So please co operate.
    Scenario : I have around 200 lists in my site. Each list gets its data from a third part web service (cutom code / not BCS). The data retrieval happens via Timer Jobs. The Timer Jobs call the web service, gets the fresh data and updates the
    list items. This is currently working fine with multiple lists and 1 timer job to refresh the data.
    Problem : Now the issue I am facing is, each of the lists have its own Refresh Frequency. Say List 1 to 30 needs to be refreshed every 5 mins. List 31 to 60 every 10 mins, etc. I am currently handling this by having a RefreshLastRun timestamp.
    This works fine in most of the scenarios - unless the Web service returns large data, in which case it takes more than 5 to 10 mins for the Update to complete on 4 to 5 lists. At the same time, the other lists - they were supposed to be updated 5 mins ago,
    but are still waiting to get updated because the timer job is busy updating another list, and the refresh is in Que. This is a completely unaccepatable solution to my client because the list with lower frequency duration (5 mins) is of a higher priority than
    the lists getting refreshed every 10 mins.
    My Question is : How do I create a new Timer Job for each list? Whenever I add a new list (through code), I want to create a Timer Job at the same time, which will take care of refreshing the data in this and this list only. This way, I will
    have a independent Timer Job for each list and dont have to depend on 1 timer job to take all the load. With this approach I will have 200 timer jobs running. Which is OK with my client. So I create one class inhereting from SPJobDefinition class, and
    use it repeatedly to create unlimted timer jobs?
    I hope I am able to convey the message. My Timer Jobs are working fine. I dont need suggestions on how to get the timer job working etc. My question is, how do I create a new Job Definition dynamically through code (no deployment).
    Hanif

    I'm afraid this leads to a path where you create a single timer job (or windows service) that uses parallel programming (tpl) to handle all the lists. However, that places a huge burden on you to manage schedules, monitoring etc., something the timer job
    framework handles for you.

  • Why data has not been copied from staging DB to Reporting DB even timer job status is success ?

    Hello,
    I am facing following issue regarding web analytic service for specific date 2014-08-18:
    Verified following services which are running and status was success on that specific date 2014-08-18 :
    Web Analytics Service
    Microsoft Usage Data Import
    Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Usage Data Processing
    Observed latest Web Analytics Setting as below :
    LastAggregationDateId
    20140817 -   The date id of the last successfully completed data aggregation
    LastAggregationTime
    2014-08-18T00:00:13.210 - The time of the last successfully completed data aggregation
    LastBestBetSuggestionAggregationDateId
    20140818 - The date id of the last successfully completed best bet suggestion data aggregation. This date id should not be reset to an earlier date manually.
    LastDataCopyTime
    2014-08-17T23:59:09.693 - The last time the data were copied from the staging databases to this reporting database for aggregation
    Above settings says that Data has not copied from Staging DB to Reporting DB on Date 2014-08-18
    In order to verify the same I have checked as follow:
    SELECT COUNT (*) FROM [dbo].[WATrafficAggregationByDate] WITH (NOLOCK)
    WHERE  [DateId] = 20140818
    Above SQL Query has returned ZERO value.
    Can anyone please let me know Why data has not been copied from staging DB to Reporting DB even timer job status is success ?
    Your help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Dipti Chhatrapati

    The image itself has the answer
    The user requests a page, and the action gets picked up by the Web Analytics service that runs on SharePoint.
    The Web Analytics service logs this in the “.usage” files.
    A Timer job called “Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Usage Data Import” by default runs every 30 minutes. It imports the logs into the staging database.
    Each night the “Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Usage Data Processing” Timer job runs and transforms the data into the reporting database.
    The last run time of the import from staging and the aggregation is logged in the Settings table in the Reporting database.
    Usage and Health Data Collection Service Application collects Data about Usage and Health of your farm.
    This information is used for Health Monitoring and this is also required for running the Web Analytics Service. If you do not have a Usage and Health Data Collection Service Application or your
    Usage and Health Data Collection Proxy is stopped, you will not see any data in the Web Analytics Report

  • Real time job doesn't receive automatically changes in SAP ECC 6

    Hi Experts,
    <br/>
    <br/>I'm trying to (using Data Integrator) automatically retrieve data from SAP ECC and store it in a local database table. I followed the steps written in this article: http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/BOBJ/Receiving+IDOCs. I'm modifying some records in the Cost Center Master Data (CSKS) and using COSMAS01 as the IDOC in which I'm trying to send the information.
    <br/>
    <br/>All seems to be OK, since I manually sent a Cost Center data row using the /nbd16 transaction, SAP ECC displayed a message telling that an IDOC had been generated. Also, when I checked the IDOC status in BD87 it had status 03, meaning that it had been sent correctly.
    <br/>
    <br/>In Data Services when I clicked on 'View Data' in the local database table that I put in the dataflow I could see the rows that I manually sent from the ECC. However, after truncating the local table, it bothered me that when I tried to send manually a second IDOC with another row from the Cost Center Master Data table, my real-time job didn't receive the request and consequently didn't insert the desired rows. I didn't change anything in the configuration, so my first question to any of you is that if you know what could it be that causes my real-time job to not receive the request from ECC?. I tried making a third try, but at my company they had to shut down the ECC server, so it's going to be a while before I make another try.
    <br/>
    <br/>Now, the REAL question of this post is that after I sent the first IDOC successfully (and before sending manually the second one mentioned earlier), I changed a record in the CSKS table directly in the ECC, hoping that it would automatically generate an COSMAS01 IDOC and send all the data in the table to the Data Integrator. This didn't happen and no IDOC was generated, so do any of you know why the automatic change didn't trigger the sending of the IDOC with the data?
    <br/>
    <br/>As I said before, I made the configuration in ECC and DI following the steps in the link written at the start of the post, and it was tested OK by successfully sending a COSMAS01 IDOC once, manually using bd16.
    <br/>
    <br/>In advance I thank you all for your cooperation. This is my first thread in the SDN forum so also please excuse any mistakes in my english.
    <br/>
    <br/>Best regards...

    You do not need to schedule this job every 10 min.  Why?
    If we can't schedule this job every 10 mints how can I able to retrive the delta records into Queue(RSA7)
    What is your advice I mean how to schedule in order to get the delta?
    Thanks

  • Audit log trimmer timer job

    HI
    Audit log trimmer timer job
    what this job do
    I set the sitecollection audit settings to trim the audit data after 7 days
    is this job before delete it generate Excel report and save in document library?
    adil

    The job 'Trims audit trail entries from site collections.'
    It runs by defualt every month, which means you need to adjust the schedule so that it runs weekly so that it'll pick up your accelerated audit rules.
    This is the job that exports the data to Excel and cleans up the entries from the database.

  • Access denied error in feature receiver code when deploying-activating custom timer job feature

    hi,
    am creating a sp timer job for a updating a list.when i write this code in a  the event receiver featureactivated  method, and when i activate this feature , am getting access denied error.
    but, when i deploy this timer job [ without feature receiver] through powershell, it works.
    i didnt run  this feature receiver with runwithelevatedprivileges delegate - i think this wlll NOT solve the issue.
    from one of the posts i seen that, current logedin user needs to be part of config database roles. i didnt understand this point. how can i add my current loge din user into the sp_config database roles? is it through SSMS 2012?
    or
    is there any way to achieve without feature event receiver?
    otherwise i will be forced to write my business logic in a console appln and add this exe in a windows scheduler.!
    help is appreciated!

    hi Waqas,
    i have ran that powershell script you have pointed to me.
    function Set-RemoteAdministratorAccessDenied-False()
        [System.Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("Microsoft.SharePoint") > $null
        [System.Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration") > $null
        # get content web service
        $contentService = [Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPWebService]::ContentService
        # turn off remote administration security
        $contentService.RemoteAdministratorAccessDenied = $false
       $contentService.Update()
    now i need to test the functionality from the event receiver after Activate feature button click.
    BTW, i have written a console appln for my business  logic and created  an exe.
    also, should i test it with a web application levels coped feature instead of  site collection level feature? this  thread talks abt the same:

  • CCMS job monitoring -- RZ20 job history node get duplicated record

    Hi,
    I configured CCMS/Solution Manager auto monitoring job failure. When a job failed on my satellite system, it created a alert and send notification to my CEN, which is my solution manager. Then solution manager send e-mail to a distribution group.
    This is working fine until last week. Now when a job failed, in job history node of RZ20 of my satellite system, the alerts are created mutiple times even the job actually only failed once. For some reasons, the history node of the alerts are updated every 5 minutes with the same job failure. More interestingly, after one hour, it did not create alerts any more. However, as the result I get many e-mails with the same job failure in this once hour, which I expect only one e-mail.
    Do you guys encounter the same problem? I am wondering something has been unintentionaly turned on so it's updating every 5 minutes. I want to turn it off. I looked at SM37 try to find if some batch jobs are doing this but did not find anything running on every 5 minutes.
    Any helpful answers will definitely be appreciated and reward point.
    Yujun Ran

    Hi Suhas,
    Once we had the same issue. But once we updated the current ccmsagent in both Solution manger and the satellite system the issue got resolved.
