Huge windowserver_last.log !

Hello everybody,
I'm quite new to MacOS X, even though I've been using Unix-like systems for years. Recently, I discovered there was "Zero Ko" left on the hard drive of my iBook, which was surprinsing since I always keep about 4.0G of free space on it.
So I parsed my F.S. and discovered that te file /private/var/log/windowserver_last.log was 4.6G, and fullfiled with the same message from the beginning to the end :
Aug 01 00:57:46 [14120] (ipc/rcv) invalid name: CGXRunOneServerPass: mach_msg (gServiceSet) failed (last RPC: LaunchAppRequestWithAuditInfo)
With about 700 lines per second.
But then, I don't know where the problem is, so I can't correct it. I just know it started about esterday evening, but I was just using Firefox and Dashboard, nothing very terrific.
Can anybody advise me about how to solve that windowserver's super-logging attitude ?

I'm responding because I am in the process of cleaning out hard drive space with Omni's Disk Sweeper and discovered my windowserver_last.log file is over 8GB in size on my 15" PB G4. I've tried to open it so I could post what it is aying, but it crashes console out. I can open my console and the last entry there is:
2006-08-27 17:20:47.816 SyndicationAgent[1821] WARNING: BestCalendarDateFromString - can't interpret: 'Sun 27 Aug 2006 12:26:55 -800'
this has been repeated twenty five times beginning with this below and ending with the one above:

I am not very UNIX savvy and I am leery to use the console commands to delete it. I want to fix the problem, but I don't know how. I'm going to check my G4 tower soon to see if it has the same problem.
The previous 10 or so lines of code from console are included in case they may help determine what is causing this on my PB

  • Help fixing a huge windowserver_last.log file

While using Omni Disk Sweeper, I discovered that my windowserver_last.log file is in excess of 8GB in size. I'm not very unix command savvy, but I am trying to reclaim the space without wiping something important. I'm unable to open the file using console because it crashes every time it opens that log. I have looked at the console and it has an error code that posted 25 times in less than a second. I've copied the error code below.
    2006-08-27 17:20:46.890 SyndicationAgent[1821] WARNING: BestCalendarDateFromString - can't interpret: 'Sun 27 Aug 2006 12:26:55 -800'
From this, I have posted the last 8 lines of code from the console as well. I have seen that thisw problem was encountered by someone before, but I don't know how to fix it without probably breaking my PB. If anyone can give me some guidance on how to fix it, or let me know if this is normal, thanks.

  • What is windowserver_last.log and why does it hate me?

My MacBook hard drive is making some click/clunk noises every half minute or so. Sounds like something indexing or writing to the hard drive in the background. Keeps doing it across restarts. Nothing super scary but enough to make me do a quick back up of the important files. I check my available disk space after backing up and discovered it was only 7GB when it should be 20GB! With a tool called WhatSize I discovered that the private directory is at 12.7 GB, most of that being a file called windowserver_last.log at 12.2 GB, with the rest being virtual memory swap stuff at an apparently reasonable .5 GB.
I assume it's safe to delete the log in console. What could be causing this? I think the little click/clunk hard drive noise I'm hearing right now is actually the MacBook writing to that log file a couple times a minute. Will deleting that file stop the constant logging?

    HI, Sanford.
Yes, it is safe to delete windowserver_last.log.
There are some bugs related to these logs.
The current windowserver.log is supposed to be rotated whenever you restart (or shutdown and restart). The old windowserver_last.log replaced by the existing windowserver.log and a new, blank windowserver.log created. It appears that in some cases this isn't happening.
It's also been found that every time one uses Command-Tab to switch between applications, the following three entries are written to windowserver.log:
Jun 10 19:55:56 [58] Hot key operating mode is now all but UA disabled
Jun 10 19:55:56 [58] "Dock" (0x5b0f) set hot key operating mode to normal
Jun 10 19:55:56 [58] Hot key operating mode is now normal
If you're a heavy user of Command-Tab and don't restart often, the windowserver.log will grow quite large. Likewise, after a restart and the rotation of the log, the windowserver_last.log will still be consuming a good bit of space as, if everything works, it is simply the previous windowserver.log.
IMO, writing this message to the log is unnecessary logging.
None of the normal Mac OS X Mac OS X Maintenance Scripts rotate or prune these logs: it seems it is only done via a restart or shutdown/restart.
The bug has been reported, so hopefully it will be fixed in some future Mac OS X Update.
    Good luck!

  • Windowserver_last.log = 20.6GB!

Looking at "Whatsize" I find this and it doesn't allow me to delete it.
I can't find it in the Finder or in Spotlight either; it's "/private/var/log/windowserver_last.log"
It's in my daughters MacBook, and taking a lot of space.
Any help in how to find it and get rid of it will be of much help

Well that's the next obvious question to ask . Why did this file balloon in such a way?Did you not look inside to find out? Sorry, that's the obvious answer!
Some further info on this: The "windowserver.log" and "windowserver_last.log" appear to be rotated on either a restart, or wake from sleep, but only when the primary log has reached of the order of 54 to 56 KB. This would explain why most of your "last.log"s are of that order.
If you use Command-Tab to switch applications, 3 lines are written to the log about "hot keys". Likewise if the machine goes to sleep 2 lines are written, and a further 2 lines on wake from sleep, all again relating to "hot keys". This was reported as "unnecessary logging" about a year ago.
In addition there may be messages about illegal arguments to "CGXOrderWindowList" and such like. For it to reach 20 GB, it must not have been restarted in quite a while, OR something is wrong and is writing a lot of error messages.
I would keep an eye on that particular machine just in case, and next time read the log before deleting it
Edit: it is very easy to look at these files using the Console which you can find in /Applications/Utilities.

  • Windowserver_last.log is too large

    Hi,
My MacBook was suddenly left with Zero KB free on its drive, so I started some research and found this post (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5021191&#5021191) that helped me find that my windowserver_last log file is 16GB (!!!).
I've already removed the widget that (I think) caused the flood in the log. Since after I freed some space on my drive, the log isn't cumulating anymore.
To make a long story short, I just want to know what the repeating msg in the log means, so I know that the problem is really solved:
(ipc/rcv) invalid name: CGXRunOneServerPass: mach_msg (gServiceSet) failed (last RPC: LaunchAppRequestWithAuditInfo)
    Thanks for the help!!
    PiTZiK.

Hello Matt, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Open Console in Applications>Utilities, select that Log and choose delete it.
Also, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go., then use Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities to Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishe.
    Report outcome please.

If you get slow sync and huge ~/Library/Logs/Sync/syncservices.log file, check that iSync is log logging everything it can.
    In terminal, type :
    defaults read -g SyncServicesLogEverything
if it returns YES, then here is your probem, just turn it off or delete this default :
    defaults delete -g SyncServicesLogEverything

  • Huge system.log file filled with over a million messages about NSATSTypeset

    Hi,
I just happened to notice the system.log file on my MacBook Pro laptop was absolutely huge - over 1.2 GBytes in just one day. Almost all of it is messages like this:
    Mar 31 12:26:23 macbook quicklookd[228]: <NSATSTypesetter: 0x146b40>: Exception * table 0x1473caa0 has block 0x147b3040 rather than 0x147b4850 at index 7573 raised during typesetting layout manager <NSLayoutManager: 0x124140>\n 1 containers, text backing has 16461 characters\n selected character range {16461, 0} affinity: downstream granularity: character\n marked character range {16461, 0}\n Currentl

and there are over 1.3 million of these messages!!!! There is a tiny bit of variation in some of the numbers (but not all). That is just a little bit more than the total number of files I have on the hard drive in the laptop, so it would appear that the quicklookd is doing something to each and every file on the computer. Any idea why all of a sudden these messages appear and why so many. I only have about 7 versions of the system.log files and none of them are even close to this big, but the one one thing I did do today that I have not in a few weeks is reboot my laptop because of another problem with the laptop screen not waking this morning from being put to sleep last night (was just black but computer was running and could login to it from another computer in the LAN it is attached).
Any ideas why this is happening, or is this something that always happens on a reboot/boot rather than waking from sleep. Why would the quicklookd be printing out so many of these messages that are almost exactly alike???
I have only had this MacBook for a few weeks, so don't have a good feel for what is normal and what isn't yet.
    THanks...
    -Bob

    Bob,
Thanks for your further thoughts and the additional information. My guess is that Quick Look does its file processing independently of whether or not or how recently the computer has been rebooted. The NSATSTypesetter messages filling up the log file are almost certainly error messages and should not occur with normal operation of Quick Look. I suspect that your reboot doesn't directly have anything to do with this problem. (It might have indirectly contributed in the sense that either whatever caused the need for the reboot or the reboot process itself corrupted a file, which in turn caused Quick Look to fail and generate all those error messages in the log file.)
In the meantime I may have a solution for this problem. This morning I rebooted in single user mode and ran AppleJack in manual mode so that I could tell it to clean up all user cache files. (I'd previously downloaded AppleJack application from http://applejack.sourceforge.net/ . To boot in single user mode hold command and s keys at startup chime. ... Run the five AppleJack maintenance tasks in order. The third task will give you the option to enter numbers of users whose cache files will be cleaned. Do this cache cleaning for all users.) In the six hours since I ran AppleJack I've seen exactly two NSATSTypesetter error messages in /var/log/system.log . This compares with hundreds of thousands in the same period yesterday. I just set an iCal alarm to remind me to report back to this discussion thread in two weeks on this issue.
    Best,
    Chris.
PS: Above you mention 7 log files. Are the older ones of the form system.log.0.bz2 ? If so they have been compressed. Just because they are small doesn't necessarily mean there are not a lot of nearly identical error messages. Uncompress to check. I haven't tried this because large files are very inconvenient to work with on my old iBook.

  • Huge errors.log daemons.log and everything.log [SOLVED]

Ok people i have i big problem since my last update, wich happened yesterday.
errors.log, daemons.log and everything.log are extremly huge over 1.3G per file.
I tried this to make them smaller with this:
    >errors.log
    >daemons.log
    >everything.log
and this helps for about 5 mins, but after that 5 mins, those three files are growing large again.
logrotate is in my /etc/cron.daily. Should i put it in /etc/cron.hourly. Is this gonna help me with my problem or is it something else that causes it.
This is the message that is written over and over in errors.log:
Jul  6 13:06:44 myhost famd[2151]: fd 4 message length 1347375956 bytes exceeds max of 4136.
    This one is from daemon.log:
Jul  6 13:08:09 myhost famd[2151]: fd 4 message length 1347375956 bytes exceeds max of 4136.
And this one is fron everything.log:
Jul  6 13:09:03 myhost famd[2151]: fd 4 message length 1347375956 bytes exceeds max of 4136.
As you can see this is the same message in all three files.

  • Huge System.log and asl files. Can these be deleted? What may be the casue?

Following on from an earlier posting regarding disappearing disk space, a couple of responses suggested running a disk utility such as OmniDiskSweeper.
I ran this and it highlighted that the private folder, specifically 'private/var/log' is taking up almost 49 GB! There are 2 system log files:
system.log.0 is almost 20 GB and system.log is close to 19 GB and a file, asl is 10 GB
What are these, can they be deleted, and what may have caused them to be so large in the first place?

This was being written repeatedly to the system.log file. I removed the application, restarted the Mac and the problem appears to be resolved

  • Windowserver_last.log...Why Ballooning to 30gig and Ruining Me and My Life?

What is this file and why is it suddenly draining all my hard drive space? I have read on other threads that is happens from "Command-Tab." Perhaps from Command-Tab to open a new window in Firefox?
I should be able to use this. Is there a reason for the draining? How do I stop it in the future.
    Thanks
    Matt

Hello Matt, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Open Console in Applications>Utilities, select that Log and choose delete it.
Also, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go., then use Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities to Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishe.
    Report outcome please.

are you sure DR is in sync .
I see bellow in metalink [ID 18373.1]
    Error: ORA-314
Text: log <name> of thread <num>, expected sequence # <num> does not match
    <num>
Cause: The online log is out of sequence, probably because it is corrupted or
    an old version.
Action: For more information on recovery procedures, see the <Oracle Server
    Administrator's Guide>.
*** Important: The notes below are for experienced users - See Note:22080.1
    Support Notes:
If the database is from a clean shutdown and no restore has been
performed then it may be just the Online logs have been over-written.
    A useful quick check is:
    select * from v$recover_file;
If this shows no rows then the following steps may be useful:
    a. If you do not know why the current online log is an old copy
take a backup of all existing datafiles (V$datafile),
controlfile (v$controlfile) and the online logs (even though old)
(v$logfile). This ensures you can never get into a worse position
    than you are in now.
    b. Once you have a safe backup copy:
    startup mount
    recover database until cancel;
    ## This should report "Media recovery complete."
    alter database open resetlogs;
    ## The database should open here unless there is some other problem.
    c. Now shutdown take a FULL backup of all datafiles / logfiles and
controlfile as you cannot perform recoveries through a resetlogs.

  • Huge log.xml are generaing in 11.1.0.7 database.

    Hi
we have an issue where listner log file is generating hugely and also it is creatin very huge listner logs. we tried bounce the listner and database but still it geerates huge log files

how big is the listener log file.... ?
to save on space, you may backup and truncate the existing listener log file with the below steps.
lsnrctl set log_status off (turn listener logging off)
gzip <listener.log>listener.log.07052011.gz (backup listener file by zipping)
next step to truncate by doing this $>listener.log (do this to truncate the existing listener log)
lsnrctl set log_status on (turn listener logging on)
Again, I would like to know the listener.log file size..

  • Huge 114GB and 53GB Kernel logs

    Hi all,
I was wondering why my iMac had such a small amount of free space and took a look at it using Disk Inventory X. Apparently I have two log files in private/var/log that are huge. kernel.log.0 which weighs in at 114GB and kernel.log.1 at 53GB. What looks to be an active kernel.log is only 813KB. I'm not very experienced in this area of the mac so while this looks highly fishy to me, I'm not sure what to do about it. The installation is a recent clean install and the machine only a few months old.
Any thoughts on how I can reclaim the disk space? Can these log files be safely deleted and if so how? And is there likely to be a wider problem that this is a symptom of? Many thanks in advance.
    MrGatsby

Can these log files be safely deleted and if so how?
Yes, using Go to Folder in the Finder's Go menu to navigate to /private/var/log .
is there likely to be a wider problem that this is a symptom of?
Double-click one of the files and look for one or more lines repeated many times.

  • Distribution log retation - log is huge!

    Hi,
I have 26 publishers with transactional replication to a central subscriber.
All the distributor properties and publication properties in these publishers are the same.
5 of these 26 publishers (publisher/distributor in the same server) have huge distribution log files (up to 100GB) and the log space used is over 90%, even using recovery model simple.
I already tried to configure the distribution retention and the publication retention, already checked the cleanup jobs and even executed the cleanup procedures myself, but the % space used in the huge logs are still over 90%.
I can understand a log retention in the publication database because the log reader agent needs to read the log and send the information to the distributor, but I can't understant this retention in the distributor database. As far I know, the information
in the distributor database is inside the system tables, the cleanup jobs delete old information in these tables, but why I still have this problem in the distribution log and only 5 of 26 distributors with this problem ?
How can I shrink the distribution log in this case ? The database is already in simple recovery model, I'm not understanding the log retention.
    Thank you !

I had the same exact problem and tried everything thing:
    Problem:
    Distribution data file = 19gb
Distribution log file = Ballooned to dangerous 700gb
    Setup:
    1) Transactional replication setup, continuous
    2) 13 publications
    3) Largest database = 200 gb
    4) Distributor properties:
     Transaction retention 0-72 hours
     History Retention 48 hours
    5) Subscriptions all configured as pull subscriptions
    6) Distribution database is set to simple
    7) Distribution clean up: distribution job run fine in 13 min(kinda long though)
    8) Agent history clean up runs fine (2 sec)
    9) Expired cleanup job runs fine (17 sec)
I noticed a few setup inneficiencies and recently made this change:
    1) Changed each publication from "never expire" to  120 hour retention
    Manually ran some diagnostics:
Segment Name Group Id Size in MB     Space Used Available Space Percent Used
    distribution 1 19629.00       3635.81 15993.19  18.52
    distribution_log 0 774523.06      741109.16 33413.91  95.69
    DBCC OPENTRAN
     No active open transactions
    Manually ran EXEC dbo.sp_MSdistribution_cleanup @min_distretention = 0, @max_distretention = 72
Removed 0 replicated transactions consisting of 0 statements in 80 seconds (0 rows/sec).
    DBCC Loginfo
    Returns 1104 rows
    Select name, Log_reuse_wait_desc FROM sys.databasess
     Name             Log_reuse_wait_desc
     distribution        LOG_Backup
     REPLuserdb        Replication
Manually confirmed all data from source to subscriber has been replicated and is a match. The data is all there at the subscriber.
I considered stopping the sql server agent and running the following command to reset the replication status: EXEC sp_repldone @xactid = NULL, @xact_segno = NULL, @numtrans = 0, @time= 0, @reset = 1    Then running the distribution cleanup
job again or shrinking the log.
    ....but this is very disruptive.
Finally I just changed the recovery model to full and back to simple and truncated the log file. Just like your case this is the only thing that worked!
