Hyper V guest slow disk access

I have a Hyper V cluster(2012) with a 2012 guest running 2012 acting as my file server.
My 2 hosts are connected to a gig switch stack which in turn is connected to my Dell MD3200i.
My file server has a "data" disk that is a VHD(fixed) on the iSCSI storage. As is it OS(dynamic)
I'm coping 200GB right now and only seeing data thoughtput of 8MB/sec.
When I check perfrmance on the file server the disk queue is huge. But when I check the queue for C: on the host, which is where the cluster storage appears to sit, its got a low if not no queue.
Also did a copy using the host and saw 58MB/sec so I'm happy the network should be able to pass the data.
Switch CPU is at 5%
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Fixed VHD always performs better than Dynamic VHD in most scenarios by roughly 10% to 15% within the exception of 4K writes, where fixed VHD performs significantly better according to the Windows Server Performance Team Blog.

  • Extremely slow disk access iMac5.1

Hello, my daughter is having problems with her computer. She has a Mac5.1 ( intel ) running 10.4.11.
In the process of trying to determine the problem, I installed Xbench on her computer. The numbers for the disk access category are dismal, all others (although low) appear normal.
    This disk values are:
    Sequential                         0.03
        Uncached Write            0.01        0.01 MB/sec [4K blocks]
        Uncached Write            0.17        0.10 MB/sec [256K blocks]

Aparently sequential access is much worse that random access however Apple utilities as well as Onyx claims that the disk is fine. However the computer is nearly unusable.   What else can I try?  I ran an fsck on the disk, I also caused the write permissions to be corrected. I am running out of ideas.
BTW her disk is a WDC WD160JS-40TGB0.  Out of 148 Gig, 110 are used and about 40 are free.
Any Ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated.

How much RAM does the iMac have and how many Applications are running concurrently or set to open at login?
40GB should be ample free space for V-RAM, but it could definitely get bogged down if there is to little RAM for the users needs.
Sometimes one will inadvertently set a bunch of stuff to automatically open at login. Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items and remove any unnecessary Application automatically set to open at login-in and then restart the computer.
Then again it could be that the HD is just suffering from age, if it has been thrashed because of continual page outs due to the lack of system memory. Because my Earlier 2006 Mac4,1 with 2GB of RAM that I upgraded (for space reasons) to a WD 320GB Hard Drive in 2009 is getting:

  • Macbook pro mid-2012 13" has very slow disk access

Until 3 days ago my macbook pro mid-2012 13" running OX 10.8.3 was running fine. Then, it showed very slow response anytime it had to access the hard disk. After doing the usual checks and disk first aid repairs to no avail, I booted from my external disk with an older copy of my hard disk and everything then worked as normal, except when I accessed the internal hard disk, then it crawled once again (spinning beach ball, took many seconds just to open a finder window and then several minutes to display the contents). I ran the Apple Hardware Tests and it said everything was fine, even though it tooks several minutes before the test would actually start. I also ran the program BlackMagic Speed Disk to find out if the disk was having transfer speed problems and it showed a respectible transfer rate (60MB/s), not great but not like the 0.3MB/s I was getting when I tried to back up the internal disk. I was using Carbon Copy Cloner to try to back up the internal disk but had to give up since at 0.3MB/s, it would take days to back up the 250GB on the disk. I found on the web that using "restore" in Disk Utility, I could do a disk copy without the file by file copy which allowed me to back up my disk in "only" 6 hours. Booting from my newly made copy on an external disk worked fine and ran at nearly normal speed (slightly slower since it was an external disk running through USB2). As a final attempt to prove this was a disk problem, I erased the internal disk and reinstalled OSX 10.8. I am still waiting for this install to finish, it has been 5 hours although the progress bar said it should be done in 20 minutes. This was fairly convincing evidence that it is not a software or settings problem. However, all my web searches could find no other case of a problem like mine. I presume I have a failed hard disk but as all the diagnostic programs say it is working fine, I was hesitating to bring it in without hard diagnostic evidence. If anyone knows what might be the problem, it would be much appreciated to hear from you.

It should not take 5 hours to install Mac OS X.  There is something wrong with the disk.  Try reformatting where you do a wipe of the drive (an select the option to write zeros which will remap bad sectors).   Then try to install MAc OS X.
I got this information from here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20064489-263.html
    Back up your data.
Use Time Machine or a system cloning utility to create a full and restorable backup of your data. If you suspect bad blocks, then when cloning you might consider not using a "block-level" copy process, since this will likely run into problems.
    Boot to the utilities DVD.
If you have a boot DVD for a tool like Drive Genius or another drive utility, then boot to that; if not, use your OS X installation DVD (once you select your language, open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu).
    Format the drive.
Using your selected utility, format the drive and check for bad blocks. If you are using Disk Utility, click the Erase tab, click the Options button, and then select the option to write zeros to the disk (you do not need to do multipass erase options, as this will provide no additional benefit for managing bad blocks). Writing to zeros may take a couple of hours depending on the size of the drive, but when done the drive will have remapped any blocks that were not reliably read.
    Restore the OS installation.
If you have used Time Machine to create your backup, boot to your OS X installation DVD (if you are not using Disk Utility) and use the option in the Utilities menu to restore from backup. Attach your Time Machine drive and then proceed with the restoration, selecting the newest backup as the one to restore to your system. If you have used a system cloning tool, then attach the cloned drive and boot off of it (hold the Option key at start-up to select it from the boot menu). When you are booted to the cloned drive, run your cloning utility to copy the installation back to the computer's main boot drive. An optional approach here is to perform a full reinstallation of the OS from your installation DVD, and then migrate your data, applications, and settings from either the clone or the Time Machine backups using Apple's Migration Assistant.

  • Guest LDOM disk access through multiple IO domains

    Hi All,
I am working on a configuration, wherein the boot disk to the Guest LDOM is being provided through an image file hosted on a VxVM diskgroup (vmdg1). The configuration has another copy of the same image file being provided through another VxVM diskgroup (vmdg2)l through another virtual disk service.
let me clear the configuration a little more in detail
A T-5240 server having 2 IO domains configured
Primary (Control domain + IO domain + Service domain) configuration
A VxVM diskgrop (vmdg1) having a boot image file
Secondary (IO domain + Service domain) configuration
A VxVM diskgroup (vmdg2) having a copy of the boot image file
these devices are exported through their respective virtual disk services with the same mpgroup name to a guest LDOM. The vdsisk is then assigned to the guest ldom which is using the volume through the primary service.
When the guest LDOM is started it starts with the disk export through the Primary domain. All writes happen fine. When the VxVM diskgroup is deported from the Primary the Guest LDOM still remains online as starts using the disk image path through the secondary domain.
I then bring the VxVM diskgroup and the mounts back online on the Primary domain and deport the diskgroup from the secondary domain to see if it failsback to the image through the Primary domain. The Guest LDOM now is in a hung state and does not allow access through the local console or through network logins.
Has anyone see such a problem? Also is it recommended to use disk based image as a backend device in mpgroups through "ldm add-vdsdev" ?
    TIA,
    Sudhir

As far as I know then only way to "re-balance" the I/O across the domains is to unbind/bind the guests. Not a great answer, but this could be done as part of the guests patching cycle.
I think there is an RFE to provide MPxIO-like features to guests.

  • Qosmio X505-Q870 with "slow" disk access

i"ve got a several month old X505 870 with 4GB of memory and TWO Hitachi 7200 rpm 500GB SATA II hard drives. The system is used primarily for initial examination of digital images, with each image being around 20MB. Accessing images to display previews is perceptibly slow. YES, the system is tuned to the best of my ability. YES, both disks have been, and are REGULARLY defragmented - both show 0% fragmentation. YES, I've thrown away the original O/S with all the trialware, stupidity, and goop, and installed W7, 64-bit. YES, all the drivers I'm aware of are current, including the Intel storage drivers. NO, other than the periodic Side-By-Side errors that show up every couple days, I'm NOT getting application or system errors.
In Bridge or Lightroom I"m not getting CPU bound, but this thing beats on the disk(s) quite a bit, and takes MUCH longer than the desktop system to display images. YES, the desktop is a slightly faster CPU, but it
also has standard 7200 rpm drives for images, and it's SIGNIFICANTLY faster at retrieving and displaying images in Bridge or Lightroom...
Is there any PRACTICAL (no, putting in 2, 500GB SSD drives is NOT practical) thing that can be done to improve disk performance on this box, 'cause right now it certainly isn't any speedster?

I don't have any empirical evidence about whether the original installation was this slow, but my recollection is the reason I dumped an re-installed a clean W7 was because the original was REALLY a dog. I also wanted to put partitions on the drives and the original installation caused problems with the partitioning... But, I'm confident that the original was definitely not faster...
As far as drivers, I believe I have everything current.
My antivirus is Microsoft Security Essentials, but I currently have it turned off. So that's probably not the issue.....
As far as "is it really slow", I can't say. It's SLOWER, but I suppose if you're not doing anything very demanding it'd probably be all right. It's just significantly slower doing what I do, than my desktop. I don't have anything else to compare it to, but it SEEMS (the ever popular "seems") to me that a quad-core with 4GB of memory and 7200 rpm drives should be extremely quick to pull up images and render previews. But, I'll admit my expectations may be too high.
Which is why I'm hoping there's something I've neglected that'll make things perform better. I even dumbed down the interface with the "best performance versus best appearance" thing to see if that'd help. Didn't.

  • VM Guest Slow Disk

    Hi all,
Forewarning:  I sort of got this stuff dumped in my lap so I am by no means close to an expert in virtualization.  I apologize in advance.
    Scenario:
We are using Hyper-V VMs as our build machines (Windows 7 SP1 64-bit guest OS) for all of our products.  Right now I'm trying to shave time in the main solution compilation times for the one project and have been getting hardware increases on the Hyper-V
    host server.
The IT admin ran SQLIO on the host (Server 2012 - not R2) and saw numbers like:
    IOs/sec: 28259.00
    MBs/sec: 220.77
I ran SQLIO on the VM in question and saw numbers like:
    IOs/sec 4070.33
    MBs/sec: 7.94
Now the host hard disk setup is 2x 10k SAS drives.  I've tried plugging an SSD in and sticking one VM on there and re-running and saw no increase.
This is leading me to believe there's a wonky configuration somewhere.  I have the drive set to a fixed-disk vhdx on IDE controller.
    Any ideas?

    Hi jmcdade11,
I ran SQLIO on the VM in question and saw numbers like:
    IOs/sec 4070.33
    MBs/sec: 7.94 "
This is the result of SQLIO test on win7 64bit VM with 16 vCPU ?
Please run command  "fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo  X: " (X is the drive   which storing win7 VHD file )in hyper-v host and check the value of "Bytes Per Sector" and "Bytes per Physical
    Sector"
The SCSI disk with RAID ?

  • Extremely Slow Disk Access from External Drives (USB & Firewire)

Following the upgrade to 10.6.2 (from 10.6.1), my computer is communicating extremely slowly with all external drives (both Firewire 400 and USB). File transfers which used to take less than a minute now take 5-10 minutes (less than 1 GB). Peering into the Console, I see messages for each aspect of a file reading: Nov 13 12:30:12 Nautilus /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[152]: Possible unresolved transaction race -105/filename
(Nautilus is the name of the computer)
By "each aspect", I mean that for Pages files, it provides a message for Quicklook,(null) , Contents,(null) , and filename,(null).
All disks are in good health, formatted as FAT32 for ease of use with all OS types, and are SATA.
Again, this occurred immediately following the installation of 10.6.2 (both Software Update and Combo). I've seen similar errors online with iTunes libraries on network drives, but this is on directly connected drives.
I normally wouldn't ask this, but, is there a way to reinstall 10.6.1 over .2? At this point, Time Machine would likely cause me to lose other data as well in a full revert, since it has been more than a few days.

I have various personal files backed up on these drives (not system data): music, pictures, documents, etc.
FAT32 should not be an issue, as I have used these drives for over 2 years with Tiger, Leopard, and then Snow Leopard with nay an issue, until now. Additionally, while the Time Machine backup may be an archive, it is the sole occupier of an HFS-formatted partition which is not exhibiting the issue. I only included that information since it is physically on the same drive as a partition (FAT32) which is being troublesome to rule out driver/hardware problems.
Bottom line: All of my drives worked perfectly on 10.6.1 (and continue to do so on my other Macs (10.5.8), but do not on 10.6.2. I was only looking for a potential solution to my computer's specific issue, not a statement that my "compromise" is the cause of my problems.
Actually, since Apple fully supports read/write access on FAT32 partitions, I should, indeed, be able to "have all things all ways...", no offense intended.

  • Slow Disk Access

    Hi,
I have a Dual 2.5 Ghz PowerPC G5, which has two 250GB hard disks. I also have a Lacie 250GB Firewire hard disk installed. I am using Mac OS X 10.4.4.
When use this computer the CPU and disk performance are OK. However, whenever and application uses a File Open dialog to find or save files the dialog (such as with Macrosoft Word, Macromedia Flash etc) is incredibly slow. It can take up to a minute before the application will find all the files and display them. This is incredibly frustrating. I mean, I hardly have any files! Is there anyway to fix or resolve this problem?
    Thanks, David.

    1. Did you try the advice in my FAQ w.r.t. Energy Saver settings? The spin-up noise may be too low for you to hear: some drives are nearly dead silent in this respect.
    2. There are only two other things I can suggest:
    - Open Activity Monitor (in Applications > Utilities). Sort processes in descending order by %CPU and monitor it when the problem occurs.
    - Check Console for clues after the problem occurs.
    Good luck!

  • Really slow disk access

our iMac runs like a dog. I've max'd RAM, cleaned and optimized the hard drive. Configured with two non-admin users (myself & my wife - I need right-click but it drives here crazy), and an admin account. iTunes and iPhoto libraries are shared, and they are stored on an external 500g drive. in addition we have TimeMachine active to a 2tb drive thru. External drives are connected thru the USB hi-Speed bus.
Examples of slow: up to a minute to switch users, 10-20 seconds for a cursor in Spotlight, Safari takes about a minute to get "warmed up".
I decided to do a clean install of Mavericks - all previous updates/upgrades were automated via Apple and/or AppStore.
So I'm creating a redundant backup of folders on the internal drive (everything except movies, music, & photos which are on the 500g and backed up via TimeMachine on the 2tb drive).  in total only 172g to copy to another 1tb drive.
I started last night, but it went to sleep and did not work all night. in total it's been working 4-6hrs last night and 8hrs today. There is still 22hrs to go!
Is there any hope for this machine?
    Larry :-)
    ========

I watch Activity Monitor a lot, CPU never really seems to be stressed, nor the Disk. While I don't know how to read the Memory monitor, "memory presure" is typically stable at about 25%.
The terminal showed 0.0 pages written to the pagefile - taken while only doing back-up and Activity Monitor, no real change now that I'm also in Safari.

  • Very Slow Disk Access

Recently I've had to restart my PB multiple times in order for it to start up because it just sits with the Apple logo and the circle going. I booted from a backup drive, no problem, but when I attempted to reformat the drive via Disk Utilities, it would not allow it. DU went into 'not responding' mode. Now when I boot, it takes forever and there is a tremendous lag time. How do I determine if there is an actual hardware error with the drive or if Disk Warrior would be able to correct the problem (I would have to buy DW)?

You may have a cache overload.
Make sure your reset Safari if that is your bowser all the time and empty the caches on it and also on any third party software.
I empty my caches all the time on Safari, yet it still shows up I need to clean it using my NetBarrierX4. You may also empty temporary files.
And I have resorted to taking my battery out to reset my logic board when I can't fix things.
Adware and Malware and spyware and trojans can cause this also.
I reset Safari everyday. Go to Safari preferences or any brower you use and reset to empty caches....and then go to system preferences and click on security and delete any cookies. Cookie cleaning is very important...at least for me.
Let me know if any of these things work.
    Worms can also cause it.

  • Time Capsule disk access SLOW!   2TB - Dual band

I have a Time Capsule (2TB, Dual Band, Firmare at 7.4.2)
Its been working like a dream, backing up 3 Macs for the last 8 months.
I also use it for connecting two or three other disks via USB and then making those accessible over the LAN, and there is also about 100GB of data on the Time capsule disk itself that i use as a dump for files so i can get to them from anywhere on my LAN.
Lately I started to notice EXTREMELY slow disk access, even when i am connected via ethernet (1000 base) - and equally when I am connected via wifi (n)
for example, copying over a 2Mb photo can take minutes when it should take seconds.
i've been trying to figure out whats going on here for a while and so i checked out the sizes of the backup files.. the sparseimages that time machine creates.
one of them was nearly 1TB, while another was around 500GB and the other was around 120GB
that plus my data meant there was only about 300GB free on the 2TB disk.
I have a feeling the slowness could be down to extreme fragmentation of the drive... ??
so i decided to dump the backup files and copy off my other data and do a erase of the disk and start again.. but get this.. i can't even delete the 1TB file ! I have been trying for about 3 days now and it just will not delete.. i get the Deleting msg box and it just sits there, literally ALL night...
i know it isn't just hanging on the Mac (10.6.4) because deleting the other two images also took a long time (but not this long!)
i can't just wipe the disk now because i can't get my other data off either.. I have tried copying it over the network and onto a USB disk connected directly to the Time Capsule, but 3 days later and i'm still copying files..
to put some context into this, I copied over 1.8Gb today and it took about 4 hours...
has anyone had this problem before?? what on earth is going on?? is it down to fragmentation, or something else?? the TC has been working fine up until a few weeks ago when i started to notice slow speed.
    any ideas ?
    thanks
    Adam

if anyone ever has this issue ....
it must have been EXTREME fragmentation. I bought another 2TB external disk, connected it to the TC, did a complete archive, which took around 24 hours... then i wiped the TC and put stuff back... it now works fine again...

  • Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V has really slow VMs disk access

Wondering if anyone can help? I have noticed in a couple of Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V scenarios, that the VM guests are often very slow. Disk access is especially slow.
In one situation their was only a couple of guest VMs, and they were running of mirrored IDE HDDs.  Performance improved significantly when I used two mirrored SSD hdds instead.
My other main situation is where the VHDs are stored on HP Lefthand P4300, over 2-nodes with 8 SATA hdds in each, using iSCSI.
So I ran a few tests with robocopy copying 4-6GB of files (mostly large) or whole VHDs (40GB or more), using HP4300 SATA, a newer HP 4330 SAS, a THECUS NAS with SATA hdds,  and an SSD in a THECUS NAS, and local SAS mirrored hdds. All using iSCSI except
    the local SAS hdds.
You can see from results that Guests run considerably slower than host. Any ideas?
Sample data (although not always same background conditions of load etc):
From within Guest direct iSCSI to same (from HP 4330): 34MB/s
From other Guest using VHD (from HP4300) to direct iSCSI (from HP4330): 14MB/s
From within Guest using VHD (from HP4330) to same: 9MB/s
From within Guest using VHD (from HP4300) to VHD (from HP4330): 11MB/s
From within Guest using VHD (from HP4330) to VHD (from HP4330): 19MB/s
From within Guest using VHD (from THECUS SSD) to same VHD (from THECUS SSD): 18MB/s
From within Guest using VHD (from HP4300) to VHD (from THECUS SSD): 13MB/s
From within Host from HP4300 iSCSI to HP4330 iSCSI: 12MB/s
From within Host using VHD (from THECUS SSD) to same VHD (from THECUS SSD): 40MB/s
From within Host from HP4330 iSCSI to same HP4330 iSCSI: 232MB/s & 132MB/s
    From within Host from HP4330 iSCSI to HP4300 iSCSI: 40MB/s & 57MB/s
From within Host from HP4300 iSCSI to same HP4300 iSCSI: 26MB/s & 47MB/s
From within Host from HP4300 iSCSI to Guest VHD (from THECUS SATA): 15MB/s

    Hi aucj,
I would suggest to use host level ISCSI connection then build VM on that ISCSI disk .
please add more Vcpu for that VM then try to copy again (shutdown the other VMs ,in that online VM from one folder to another folder ).
    Hp4330 ISCSI connection is 1GB , right ?
If yes , it should be with max 100M/s with the single ISCSI connection .
    Best Regards

  • Hyper-V Guest Disk Configuration and SAN placement

In a nutshell, I have a test 2012 R2 cluster (2-node) attached by fibre to a SAN.  The SAN at present is configured with 2 volumes, one RAID 10 and the other RAID 5.
2 questions really.  Is it best practice for each guest to have 2 virtual hard disks, one for OS and the other for data.  If so, would it be appropriate to put the OS vhdx on the RAID 10 and the data on RAID 5?
I'm trying to get a general rule of thumb rather than cater for say specifics such as SQL server.  I'm really looking at file servers and the like initially.
    Ian

Hi Ian, I have a similar setup in production, I have 5 CSV volumes, 2 of them are using SATA disks, and 3 are high performance SAS, based on an EMC VNX. I have classed these storage volume as Gold and Bronze.
we have some guests that are files servers, so the OS is on the fast disk, and the data is on the slower SATA disk.
I used SCVMM to Storage migrate and split the VHDX files up across CSV volumes.
I did see this in an article on Hyper-V and its a fully supported practice. I think it more down to requirements rather than best practice. and making use of any slower disk you have rather than wasting the high performance on applications that don't require
    it.
    Hope that helps
    Cheers
    Mark

  • Error "NOTICE: [0] disk access failed" during guest domain network booting

    Hi,
Could you please tell me what is the problem with my configuration?
I created guest domain on my T1000 server.
As a disk I used disk from disk array: /dev/dsk/c0t18d0
    I added disk using commands:

    # ldm add-vdisk vdisk1 vol1@primary-vds0 myldom1
    # ldm set-variable auto-boot\?=false myldom1
    # ldm set-variable boot-device=/virtual-devices@100/channel-devices@200/disk@0 myldom1

  • USB Disk access "Extremely" Slow

I am unable to use my network disk essentially because the disk access write/read times are SO SLOW...I am better off running backups by connecting my disk directly to the compter. Does anyone else have this problem?
It took 5 Minutes to read my Music directory; connected directly via the same cable it takes seconds.
    What gives?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I got my AE and Seagate FreeAgent Pro hard drive
yesturday and I have the exact same problem.
If I hook up the drive to the computer directly it is
    very very fast.
If I hook it up to the AE it takes about 2 hours to
move a couple fils totaling 2 gigs over ETHERNET!
If I transfer the same files over the same network
between 2 computers the speed is much much faster.
Is this normal or some nasty firmware bug. It almost
feels like the AE is using USB 1.0 for some reason.
You guys are funny. How about checking out the specs of USB 2.0 and 802.11g/n?
    Go here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/802.11g#802.11g
    and here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_2.0
Firewire vs. USB tests are here:
    http://www.g4tv.com/techtvvault/features/39129/USB20_Versus_FireWirepg3.html
    802.11g:
Release Date Op. Frequency Data Rate (Typ) Data Rate (Max) Range (Indoor)
    June 2003 2.4 GHz 19 Mbit/s 54 Mbit/s ~35 meters
    802.11n:
Release Date Op. Frequency Data Rate (Typ) Data Rate (Max) Range (Indoor)
    Mid 2008 5 GHz and/or 2.4 GHz 74 Mbit/s 248 Mbit/s (2 stream) ~70 meters
Bottom line: 802.11n typical is 74Mbps, 802.11g typical is 19Mbps. USB 2.0 typical is 50Mbps.
On the average, you should expect your speed to drop by over 50% when connecting the USB drive to AESB using an 802.11g device. If your device is 802.11n, then you should have pretty much similar performance.
Now, if you increase the distance from your base station, or you put walls in between, the performance of 802.11g will go down "dramatically", all the way to 2-3Mbps, easy. Not so for 802.11n, which behaves much better at longer distances.
