Need help from people who know Java. Some beginner questions.

Hello all.
I just recently became interested in programming and I chose Java to learn (not really sure why), I am not really interested in the whole Java Applets thing because i can already do the same things in Flash. What I really want to do is to be able to make a program that can actually complete a task; for instance Is it hard/possible to fabricate a program that could say... do a simple task like open my browser, copy a file, move something ect. What type of file would it be? Would it be a standalone program or .class for MS-DOS? Also (I'v been doing examples and lessons) why are these done in my command prompt and not just executed as the program (.java?) they are (written in notepad). What is my java program export file called that can be used by others with java enviornment. I will finish an excersize and it will say congrats you've just made you first program, but if its a program then why am i running it in command prompt unlike a program i have like Adobe Photoshop where i click the icon and it opens. Is there a better language for me?
These questions may sound stupid but i'v scrutinized the internet and found very little on these topics.
Any help to any question would be greatly appreciated!

there a better language for me?Thats because it starts you out with the language basics. Almost all languages start with the historic command shell programming.
If you want to write a GUI, then you will have to use AWT, Swing, and or SWT....
There are several advanced concepts you will have to master before you can write effective GUI's..
If your looking for an easy way out, learn VB. You will need M$'s IDE to compile though.. Or VBA from within your favorite Windows APP... Many support VBA like the Office Suite, Autocad, and Open Office, and many more..

Need help from somebody who knows computers

I recently transferred all of my files on my computer to an external hard drive because we didn't think we'd use this particular computer anymore. Anyway, when I try to download iTunes to this same computer it tells me "Invalid drive f:\" - In other words, my computer thinks that I already have iTunes on this computer but it isn't working. I get the same message when I try to remove the iTunes program in my control panel.
Can anybody help me convince my computer that I don't have iTunes so that I will be able to reload it?

Oh my. Yes, that is what is happening.(your drive is missing) You will get that error. There is a fix that involves registry editing, but registry editing can disable your computer in a permanent way. I'd recommend waiting until you have that drive available if possible.
1.Try the troubleshooting instructions at this page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976 under the "Clean up iTunes installer files on the computer" heading. Which may solve your problem.
EDIT: On review, this looks like a good candidate for a solution.
2.http://www.apple.com/support/contact/ has limited resources for iTunes install probems, but may be your best final resort.

I have a small problem, ever since I updated my adobe flash, every single time I load my web browser. Be it IE or Firefox or hell even Netzero's crap wb, it crashes the page I tried to open up.
I tried to find the flashplayer that was out prior to 10.2(whatever) but I can't seem to find it and am always redirected right to the newest one that has just come out.
I am at my wits end with this thing please someone help me out.

Go to C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash Open the Flash folder and post back all files listed. The NPSWF files you will need to Right click on and Open, then click on Properties to obtain the Version numbers.
Then using IE, go to Tools, Manage addons and find Shockwave Flash Object, make sure it's Installed, Enabled and the same version of Flash Player that you have Installed. Let me know.
Using FF, go to all plugins and make sure Shockwave Flash plugin is Installed and Enabled. Let me know.
Test both browsers here and you should see the Flash Player logo animation(RED F spin)

Also the version of Flash Player will be displayed.
If you use adblock or adblock plus or any popup blocking software you may want to disable them since they block Flash Content.
Any Virus issues? If so which program removed them?
Go to this site and see if you have a Kill-bit set. Just look to see if that Key is there in Post#1. If it is, then in Post#4 at the bottom is the solution needed.

Restoring your iPod makes it return to factory settings, making it work like a completely new iPod, thus deleting all media, including music, photos, videos, movies etc., and any files you may have stored on it whilst using it as an external hard drive in disk mode. It will only delete files stored on the iPod, so if you have 'Song A' on your iPod and in your iTunes library, when you restore the iPod it will be deleted from the iPod but will remain in your iTunes library.
Music ripped from CDs should also remain in the iTunes library, but just in case, right click the songs you ripped (press shift to select more than one song) and click on 'Show in Windows Explorer'. Then, copy the music files from the folder in Windows Explorer to a folder in another directory, (eg. Music), to make a backup. Though this is not necessary, I recommend it as iTunes can be unpredictable at times. Purchased music can always be downloaded again, but it shouldn't delete itself.
If your whole music collection is on your iPod again you could try pressing the 'Sync all music' button in iTunes in the iPod directory, which should automatically sync all playlists and songs like it used to, but it might not work. In the end a restore should help but bare in mind that you might have problems syncing music in large quantities again, so be prepared to methodically add more songs like explained in the other post. First of all, don't make your own search engine from scratch. An example of a good usable base for many kinds of search engines is Lucene
Second, use a real database and not ms access. If all you need to do is to search for some patterns in some db columns, indexing and sql queries is probably all you need.

Wanted: Help from an experienced AEBS user

The setup is:
Airport Extreme Base Station
G4 Gigabit Ethernet PowerMac with original Airport card
OS X 10.4.2
I found the instructions to configure logging on AEBS straight forward, but I'm getting stuck. I don't understand what we're doing when we're modding the etc/rc file to read /usr/sbin/syslogd -m 0. I can't find such an instruction. Is there another way to accomplish this?
Here's what I did:
1. In AirPort Admin Utility I entered the logging computer's IP address in the "Send Base Station Logging to" field. I entered the assigned static private IP of the G4 "10.0.1.201."

2. On the G4, I logged in with an administrator account.
(Complete)
3. I executed these commands in Terminal:
# sudo touch /var/log/AirPort.log
# sudo pico /etc/syslog.conf
(Complete)
4. I scrolled to the bottom of the file, and added this line:
local0.* /var/log/AirPort.log
I added tabs between * and / to get the text lined up with the other entries in the file.
(Complete)
5. I pressed Control-O, Return, and Control-X to save the file.
(Complete)
6. I executed this command:
# sudo pico /etc/rc
(Complete)
OK, this is where things go awry...
7. I tried to find this line...
/usr/sbin/syslogd -s -m 0
...using Control-W. But, there's nothing like it in /etc/rc. So, I can't continue here.
I realize the last steps are:

/usr/sbin/syslogd -m 0
9. To save and close the file, press Control-O, Return, and Control-X.
10. Restart the computer.

I'm getting accustomed to the MacBook Air and have gone through all of the available Apple Support tools and schooling. It has helped quite a bit. Having been an employee of an unnamed computer mfr. for several decades, I must unlearn many 'tricks of the trade'. As far as the permissions problem: I needed the help of an Apple Tech. that remotely examined and used the disk tools to repair the damage I caused. I need to know how to connect different projects in final edit - please help!

Okay, here's my predicament:
I'm editing a movie, but I've been putting each scene together individually. I have a different file for each scene, and sometimes even small parts of a scene were edited in a seperate file. Now I need to piece them together, but I don't know how. I'm a beginer with this, I only have a basic understanding of Premiere. I don't understand all of the technical stuff. It was hard to even word this properly, so I couldn't just search for an answer.
My original idea was to export all of the seperate scenes and then put those video files together in a project, but that didn't work. The size of the video too small. It only took up half of the preview screen. Again, it's hard to really explain what I mean, since I don't know the technical term for it. After that didn't work, I tried copying each clip from one file to another, but I didn't expect that to work. It didn't.
Is there perhaps some export setting that will not make the video too small? There are too many settings, and I couldn't try them all. Or is there something else I could do? Please help!

Put all your Premiere projects into the same folder (optional).
Create a new project.
Go to FILE > IMPORT
Select either
The entire folder where your projects are located (hence step 1) or,
The individual projects you want to bring in
Drag/drop whatever you want to a master timeline sequece in the new project and

Hi, I need help! Below is listed my code for a bar code scanning project that my company has asked me to write. I want to read a barcode, make sure that it is not already in my file, if not in file write to file(this part works - the write to file), if in file pop up an error message. I have a feeling you've already figured it out but I'll give a quick example. I didn't see where you're actually reading from the scan.txt file so I'm assuming that you're starting from scratch every time. It seems to me that you only need one Vector too - the one that contains all of the previously scanned codes.
Let's rename v to scannedList.

How do I get Customer Service from people who do not want to give it?

I recently went into a Verizon store to try to upgrade my phones. I am on a Family Plan. When I renewed my contract 2 years ago, one of the phones received was defective. After going back to the store several times, it still did not work properly. I asked for a replacement. I was sent a refurbished phone, which I did not want and complained. I sent it back and was finally sent a new phone. Now it's time to upgrade. The catch is that the date I can upgrade on 1 phone was set back 2 months-- the time it took to resolve the problem with the defective phone. In essence, I was being punished fo rreceiving a defective phone. The clerk in the store called customer service for me. I spoke to someone who had the authority to make

1st of all, by activating the "new" phone, you are agreeing to the ToS and "giving your ok".
Next, when you renewed 2 yrs ago, you signed a contract in which you had 30 days to return the phone in exchange for a "new" one. After this 30 day period, you "agreed" to refurbished replacements by signing the original contract and activating your original phone, thus agreeing to the ToS. YOU were not willing to adhere to the contract and ToS which you had previously agreed to, but you now want Verizon to follow those terms that you have already backed out on?

I'm planning to buy a iMac 21.5, 2.7Ghz with Intel Iris Pro 5200 and i was wondering if this would help me work on my Lightroom and Photoshop with ease... Please provide your feedback

I am having doubts on the Intel Irish Pro 5200, dont know will it work fine for the latest versions of Photoshop and Lightroom and other Graphics software as this version is said to be the basic and was wondering if it would help for the type of work i do.

Nothing specific against the Iris Pro graphics ...
Just that it's the GPU in the lowest-end iMac model. The software you intend to use (Photoshop, Lightroom,etc) are resource intensive applications and the more powerful system you have the better they perform.
And there is more to performance than just the GPU ... CPU type/speed, VRAM, disk speed for starters. If your use of PS, LR etc. is light and you expect it to remain light, then maybe the low-end iMac will be fine. But if you are any kind of prosumer/power user I suspect you will quickly discover the performance limitations of the low-end model. I'd point you at least to the next model "up."

To people who know about Macbook startup issues, can you please help me???

I have a troubleshooting issue regarding the bootup on my Macbook which I have been using it for a year or two since December of 2007. I have no problems of it until now and it's making me frustrated. When I was doing a homework assignment for school, I used the Spotlight search feature to search for the assignment I wanted. All of a sudden, my Mac frozed on me that I decided to press the power button to turn it off. I did it successfully until I started it back up. When the computer tries to turn it on, there are three short beeps (beep - beep - beep repeating itself for 2-3 sec) along with the blinking light indicating something's is up. Any ideas or solutions??? Please, thank you.

Hmm. Is this series of beeps similar to a "S.O.S." type sound?
First thing to try is reseating the memory as outlined here:

Do you have your install discs? Has the computer been repaired or upgraded since you purchased it?
