  • I would like to connect a printer that requires OS 10.6 or newer. My MacBook is currently using OS 10.5.8. In searching for a software update, I am told no updates are needed. How can I upgrade my OS to 10.6 or better?

I would like to connect a printer that requires OS 10.6 or newer. My MacBook is currently using OS 10.5.8. In searching for a software update, I am told no updates are needed (and am given no option for updating my OS). How can I upgrade my OS to 10.6 or newer?

You have to understand the difference between an Update and an Upgrade.
An Update is a free change to add to the base code or as a bug fix within an existing Operating System. Such as the .8 added to OSX 10.5 or the .11 added to OSX 10.4..
An Upgrade is a complete new Operating System that must be purchased. Such as 10.5 Leopard to 10.6 Snow Leopard.
10.5 Leopard was written for Power PC Macs with code added to force it to run on Intel processors.
10.6 Snow Leopard has completely rewritten code and only runs on Intel Macs.
10.7 Lion ($19.99) used some 32 bit which allows it to run on Late 2006 through Early 2008 MacBooks and a lot of 64 bit code.
10.8 Mountain Lion ($19.99) is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It can only run on the Late 2008 through Mid 2010 MacBooks. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.
10.9 Mavericks is pure 64 bit and is a free download from the App store.
The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard After you’ve installed that then download the 10.6.8 combo updater to finish it off. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks which are downloads only.
    System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.

If they are the grey discs which came with the iMac, then they will be machine specific and will not work on the MBP anyway. You will need to purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard from the Apple Store for about $29 and upgrade from that. I presume your MBP is Intel and not G4.

  • I am currently using Tiger 10.4.11 how can I upgrade to Panther?

Hi  I have a iMacg5 intel,  currently using Tiger 10.4.11 how can I upgrade to  10.5? Thanks in advance, Rene.

There is no iMac G5 Intel,
"G5" is a PowerPC processor and "Intel" is well a Intel processor.
    10.5 is Leopard
10.6 is Snow Leopard whichh only runs on Intel processors)
10.7 is coming out soon and doens't run on 32 bit Intel Core Duo processors.
You can find out exactly what machine you have by going to the Apple Menu > About this Mac > More information.
Look for something like "iMac 1,2" and post what you see here.
You might have to have someone from a Mac friendly computer shop come take a look at your machine, set you up, backup your files and set a backup plan in place and so forth.
Problems with third party software could arise, and you might be forced to upgrade software. All that will have to be investigated before you proceed with a operating system upgrade.
Don't want to be caught later paying for upgrades you might not be able to get.

As long as you have the serial number you should not have an issue installing and activating Lightroom when you finish the system reinstall.

If you purchased Lion for your iMac, just log into the Mac App Store from your MacBook using the Apple ID under which you purchased Lion and go to the Purchases page. You will be able to download and install Lion there.
searching the internet i found a link to upgrtade to 10.7
The only place you get get Lion is from the Mac App Store. If you found some other site, that was an illegal copy and almost certainly tied to someone else's Apple ID and hence unusable by you. If the link was just to the Mac App Store, see above.
As to the problem with synchronization to iCloud, that's not a 10.6 question, so I'd suggest you take up that specific issue in either the Lion or iCloud forums, providing full details, and someone there can probably help you sort things out.
    Regards.

  • HT3965 i have an old phone backup but named the same as current phone.  how can I rename the older phone backup?

i have an old phone backup but named the same as current phone.  how can I rename the older phone backup?

I'm about to buy a new phone.  last time when I had repairs, I have to restore so I can get my numbers, etc on the new phone, and when I do, there are two phones with same name (actually in 4 lines).  I restored from the one that came up, but it turned out not to be the most current information.  So I'm told I can rename the others (dont' know if deleting can be done) so that I always know which one to choose.  When restoring, it does not show the date, so I don't know which one to choose.

  • How can I upgrade my iBook G4?

I have an old iBook G4 with Mac OS X 10.2.8 ... what do I need to download to bring it the most current I can? And how can I upgrade to the latest OS version (whatever it is)?
I would prefer to download as many of the free updates as I can, before I begin buying a bunch of upgrade packs. I tried to do system updates in the system preferences, but it keeps closing on me saying the program "unexpectedly quit". So I can't seem to upgrade anything that way.
Also, I do NOT have the original system disk, but I do have the admin password.
What do I need to do to bring this laptop current - or at least as current as this machine can be?

    Hi rsottney!
"So do I need to get 10.3 upgrade before I get 10.4, or can I just go straight from .2 to .4?"
Not if your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements.
"I tried to do system updates in the system preferences, but it keeps closing on me saying the program "unexpectedly quit"."
You must resolve this issue before upgrading to a newer version of OS X.
Upgrading a problematic system, will only compound the situation.
"...I do NOT have the original system disk,..."
Without those discs, correcting the problem could be difficult.
But you could try running FSCK, as instructed in this KB Article ...perform disk maintenance with ... fsck.
Also navigate to HD Users > The Admin Account > Library > Preferences:
In there, locate the file com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist, and move it to the Trash.
    Run Repair Permissions.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP, until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.2.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".
If you purchase a set of install discs, for a newer version of OS X, you could also perform an Erase & Install of the new system.
But if you do not have a backup, you will lose all data.
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
Once an OS has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.10 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

Also check to see if your Mac model, is listed in this KB Article OS X Must Be Installed On First -8GB Partition.
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.10 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Review these Apple documents for Panther System Requirements,
    and Additional Panther System Requirements.
Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.

The Tiger Media Exchange Program, referred to in that article, is no longer available.

  • How can I upgrade from Infinity to 56K dial-up?

I have had Infinity for about a month. At first everything was great, 38Mbps. I am about 25m from the cabinet where the optical fibre is terminated so I expected this to be quite consistent.
Seven days ago the speed dropped to about 5Mbps and over the next 12 hours or so dropped even further. The last time I managed to get a download speed measurement I recorded a speed of 28.2Kbps (yes, that is Kilobits). I have not had a speed as low as that in almost 20 years. Currently the BT speed tester is not working, I suspect my speed is too slow for it. The BBC speed tester reports my speed as being 0Mbps.
I have called the BT help line every day since and have been told today that it has finally been escalated to the BT Openreach Engineering Dept. I am told that an engineer will visit me in 3 days time to fix the problem. Why has it taken a week to do this and why can somebody not do something quicker? Is BT Infinity so bad that all the engineers are running around trying to get it to work. People always go on about Microsoft getting customers to test their products, I think BT are doing the same thing with a product which is obviously not suitable for it's task.
This is absolutely awful customer service. Seven days for a succession of "support engineers" a few thousand miles away reading from a prepared script is not my idea of looking after customers.
I cannot express how this has changed my opinion of BT.
A few years ago I worked for a major supplier of satellite communications equipment. BT were one of our first big customers. We had to jump though so many hoops before we installed the equipment it was unbelievable. The system was tested to death before it entered service. What has happened to this level of quality control?
To reiterate the subject heading - how can I upgrade from BT Infinity to 56K dial-up?

    Hi Satcomman,
Welcome to the forums! I'm sorry to hear of the problems you're having with your speeds. If you could fill out our contact webform (you can find the link in my profile under "about me") and include details of your home network setup, I'll be able to run a few checks and hopefully find out where the problem lies.

  • How can I upgrade from Lion OS X to Mountain Lion OS X

Hi my question is "How can I upgrade from Lion OS X to Mountain Lion OS X?"
I don't want to lose any data from my current Lion OS X, at the same time I don't have enough external HDD to backup. I tried to do the same was as http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/ says but I didn't get Mountain Lion OS X as an option for update.
    Pleade advice,
    Mustafa

Well, right.  In 99.99% of cases you shouldn't lose any data.
But if something goes wrong, well, if you don't have a backup you're SOL.
You truly don't have ANY drive that you're using for Time Machine?
FYI: It's not a matter of IF, but WHEN, your hard drive will fail.  It will eventually happen, so you should have a backup, unless you don't have any data you care about.
