    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

hi i was using safari one day and my ipod randomly shut off it will now not turn back on i tried hard resting and everything else when i plug the ipod into a charger it gets really hot in the left corner and itunes did not recognize any help will be apreciated thank you

Try placing the iPodin recovery mode and then try to restore the iPod via iTunes on your computer.  For recovery mode see:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
Next would be to make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since you likely have a hardware problem.

  • Please help! I keep getting the sad face icon

according to the troubleshooting steps i am supposed to restore my ipod if the sad face shows up... and i tried but my computer no longer recognizes my ipod... so i tried to switch to disk mode and that won't work... and now my ipod wont even charge anymore what should i do?

The Sad iPods icon or folder with an exclamation mark are the toughest problems to deal with, and must do a Restore in order to fix it. However, when your iPod is showing this icon, it is probably too late for your computer to recognize the iPod.
    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    8. Try to do an Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a format with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer). You may need to plug and unplug your iPod with the computer for several attempts, and switching around Format and Restore, and hope out of sudden, it will get recognized.
    9. Diagnostic mode solution – which I copied from a thread of a post from thinktwice
“Then I cam across this special Diganostics Mode that you can get to by resetting and then while the Apple is showing pressing the Select and backwards keys simultaneously. It bring up and weird Diagnostic utility witha a abunch of tests. Here is what I did
    - I tried the 5in1 test and got and error on Firewire.
    - I did the HDD R/W and surprisingly it passed.
    - I went on to the HDD scan. This supposedly tkaes acouple of minute so I waited. I think 4-5 dots appeared then nothing. The iPod started to get hot. THe disk was spinning away. After a while the battery got very low. THis test chews up the battery. So I escaped out by resetting and went to connect it to a power source.
My USB was dangling out of my computer and I was too lazy to get the Firewire AC adapter thing going so I connected expecting the whole lockup thing with iTunes. Surprise. IT was recognized immediately and has been working like a champ. So go figure.
Details on Diag mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
10.Let me ask you a question, if an iPod with no iPod software with it. When your connect it with a computer, what would happen?
Yeah, the computer will treat it as a fresh external hard disk, which will get force mounted, the computer will ask you to format the iPod. It does not really matter the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted iPod software on the iPod, after that the computer will recognize it.
Once it has been completed, eject your iPod, open the iPod updater and interestingly, you will able to do the Restore this time.
Base on the above, that's why I suggest Windows users who experience trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac machine or vice versa. PC computer will not recognize a Mac formatted iPod, but it will get mounted in an attempt to format your iPod.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
I have just read an interesting solution about the Sad iPod, it does make sense but the warranty will be waived once you open the iPod, I would not do it myself as I am not good on doing this

  • Get a sad face icon on ipod with website for support

I've been playing my ipod through altec speakers today. I went to start another playlist and when I tried, the apple appeared on the screen. I attempted to reset, using hold/toggle a few times, then menu and play/select-
that's when I get an ipod with a sad face and www.apple/support.com. What's going on. Can someone help me with this issue?

Also, there is a pretty comprehensive post written by another forum member which is about the sad iPod icon or the folder and ! icon. Be aware that it's quite involved and contains some info that will almost certainly void the warranty. If your iPod is still within the warranty period, you should use that option first.

  • Imac intel won't restart, I get gray screen and spinning wheel then shut off

My imac intel only restart after running disk utility, otherwise I get a gray screen with apple logo and spinning wheel then after about 2min it shuts off.  this all started after a power outage.  I have tried everything that I have read online to fix this, it seems doing a clean install is last resort. Does anyone have any other options for me?

I have tried disconnecting the periperals, restarting in "safe boot", resetting the pram and I tried starting up in single user mode.  It will only start up if I start up from the original gray 10.4 start up disk and run "repair disk"....I get errors including "The underlying task reported failure on exit".  I then eject the disk and restart and it works fine but if I have to shut down or restart for any reason it's back to the gray screen.
Your system profile confirms you are using OS 10.5.8.  Boot up from your OS 10.5.x install dvd.  Use the "repair disk" setting.  If you get the same error, then run Apple Hardware Test from your original system dvd.

    See these.
iPod shows a folder icon with exclamation point after disconnecting.
iPod shows a folder icon with exclamation point when you turn it on.
iPod only shows an Apple logo and doesn't start up.
Only Apple Logo appears on display when turned on.

    Hello korncompaq,
    Your computer will not boot.
It sounds like you may have a problem with your board.
I’d suggest take the computer somewhere local and have them check everything out.
Let me know how everything goes.

  • Grey screen with apple and spinning progress then shuts off

    how can i fix this?

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • My iMac displays apple and progress bar then shuts off

Hi I heard the apple bar erases the memory when this happens. Does anyone have another option?

The progress bar usually indicates it is attempting a Safe Boot, which does clear some Caches. It doesn't erase the memory.
    First, try resetting NVRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Can you boot into Recovery? If so, try to repair the disk in Disk Utility.

  • Very angry: sad face icon appears: must I do a restore?

I get a sad face icon. I read the following:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61771
wherein it (the website) informes me that I must do a restore which erases all my songs/ data.
Is this true, or am I mistaken?
I wouldn't normally care about this sort of inconvenience, but I am 9000 miles from my cd's and I just spent about $100 on new songs at the iTunes store.

    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery
inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod
warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering
an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do
is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the
battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the
iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them
back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do
a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you
want do it itself and you believe that you are good
on fixing the electronics devices and have experience
to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you
can read the following of how to open the iPod case
for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)

ave I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it
myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside
electronic devices, I have few experiences that
either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or
fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main
case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it
    fixed by a Pro.
thanks for the link to the previous thread, it helps. good reading! boosts my spirits considerably and gives me a little hope.
    cheers!

  • Question about Sad Face Icon

If a restore / reset doesn't fix the sad face icon. What other problems would could it be? A bad battery? or Hard Drive. The reason I ask is a friend has a 4th G 20 Gb and he has the sad face Icon and I asked him if he restore it and he informed he did. That being said his technology knowledge isn't the best.. he is still thinks a camera will steal your soul.

If you ask me - in normal case, the Restore will solve the Sad iPod problem, however, iPod with this problem, its hard drive could have some bad sectors. Therefore, even doing a Restore, it will only temporary fix it. I could be wrong I do no think doing a Restore = 100% doing a format, so I will suggest the iPod with this problem need to do a format (on Mac we use disk utility - Erase with security option of zero data out)

  • 4th iPod in 2 months: Sad face icon appears and freezes entire iPod

Why does this continue to happen? I receive a free, brand new iPod from Apple. I upload all my purchased songs, videos, and podcasts. I listen to iPod and hear the songs freeze then bam!, the iPod shuts down, only to reboot with the sad face icon appearing.
Here is what I know is not causing the issues.
    -not temperature related.
-all songs are legit, itunes bought. (1300 to be exact)
-iPod is listened to very little. Maybe 30 minutes a day so heavy use is not an issue.
    What may be causing it:
    -Car charger/frequency player.
-Bad hardware, but 4 in a row? I think not.
What am I doing to make these iPods go caput?

    Have a read through this.
