    Either - if you need the 'ultimate' in portability, buy the Air. But whichever you buy, make sure that you max out the RAM and the storage as neither the Air or the Retina MacBook Pro are user upgradeable.

  • Looking to buy a laptop

    I'm looking at the Dell Inspiron 15 line, and I think it would have a good cost/value ratio..
    The user reviews are fairly positive, but I want to get your thoughts on it (or on Dell laptops in general).
    I'm looking for comments about hardware quality and durability. Aesthetics don't matter to me much. If you have suggestions for alternate brands, please mention why I shouldn't consider a Dell as well.
    I'm planning to get it customised like this;
    * intel core2 duo 2.0ghz processor
    * 4gb ram
    * 160gb HDD
    * intel graphics
    * no webcam
    * WLED screen
    * 1-year warranty
    that comes out to $589 (USD). Most other laptops with 4gb ram and a core2 duo tend to offer 250gb HDDs as the minimum, which jacks up the price =p. That's why I like this one - I can strip off everything I don't need (and save money).
    So, what do you guys think?

    I have handled many laptops, and nothing (except possibly the Macbook Pro) compares to the quality of a Thinkpad.  They may be expensive, but I am on my second one and I will never buy anything else.

    If you just want a consumer (cheap) laptop that will hold up well, a Dell should do you fine.  The Inspiron line is IIRC the lowest quality, though, so watch what you pick.  Check them out at Best Buy etc. before you buy.  But I really like Thinkpads; they're well worth the money IMO.  The online community (forum.thinkpads.com) is remarkable as well.

  • Looking at buying an iMac for Adobe Design Suite & gaming; opinions?

    Hello!
    I'm currently using a 2007 15" MacBook Pro. I upgraded my RAM myself to 4GB a few years back, and while it still gets the job done, I have a feeling it's going to kick the bucket soon.
    I'm looking at getting a desktop now that I'm out of school. I am deliberating between a 21.5-inch and a 27-inch, mostly because of the option to upgrade the graphics card to 2GB on the 27". If I bought the 21.5", I would buy another off-brand monitor; have two on my desk.
    Aside from that, when comparing at the Apple Store, the 27" felt uncomfortably large (*that'swhatshesaid*), but probably since I work on a 15" laptop, and have two ~22" Dell monitors at work. I'd get used to it, no doubt, but it was a concern I had at the time.
    The representatives that I spoke to gave me mixed signals about which I should buy (which I guess a lot of it is based on personal preference), so that's why I'm here.
    This is what I would use my Mac for:
    -An assortment of Adobe programs, usually running two or three programs at once (but no movie editing)
    -Gaming (Minecraft/Skyrim, mostly. I'll probably be looking at partitioning my hard drive to be able to play other PC games.)
    -I hardly if ever watch TV/movies on it, but that may change
    Does it make sense to buy the larger option, to just be able to get the 2GB graphics card and slightly better processor? Or is 1GB on the 21.5" more than adequate for my needs, and I'll save myself about 600 dollars?
    I'll be upgrading the RAM myself to 8GB or 16GB.
    Thanks for any input, I appreciate it!
    Damaris

    Yeah, I am definitely considering it now, thanks!
    With the specs I'm currently considering, I'm at $2,300:
    Base 21.5": $1,500
    i7 Processor: $200
    1TB/SDD Hard Drive: $600
    (+$150 of my own Crucial 2x8GB RAM brings me up to: $2,450)
    Other things I'm thinking about:
    Apple Care: $170 (probably not going to get this)
    Windows 7: $120
    Additional Monitor: $300?
    Dell/other brand monitors run for 100-500 bucks, right? I need to do more research; really have only taken a cursory glace at them; I know I need an adaptor for the firewire port.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Looking to buy new laptop?

    I am in the market for a new laptop. Something I can use to surf the web, iTunes for music, nothing crazy, but still want something with a fast processor and decent graphics. Which models should I take a look at? Thanks

    Hi motherof4kids,
    That is a good question and there is a lot to consider.  A lot of laptops should be able to help with your standard kind of school work (unless you are going to school for video editing, which you might need something more powerful) and also download music.  When it comes to gaming, a good video card, memory and processor are probably the top things I look for.  It also depends on how much you are looking to spend on your laptop.
    League of Legends doesn't require a whole of graphics, however World of Warcraft can, depending if you want to run on Ultra or not.  Without knowing exactly how much you are looking to spend, something I can recommend is to check out BestBuy.com and type in "laptop".  When looking all "all laptops" you can narrow your search in the left hand column to specifications you'll need.
    You can put your price range in there and then compare the specifications to WoW (since that will be the most resource heavy application you are looking to run).  WoW requires a 1.3GHz process, 2 GB's of memory and a 32MB video card.  More than this will certainly help the performance of your game.
    I hope that this helps and gives some guidance and let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hi folks, my mothers 40th next week and im looking to buy an iphone for her now and pay later. I see its available but will i be granted the loan on here ? really need help with this . thanks folks

    Hi folks its my mothers 40th next week and im looking to get an iphone4s or 5 from apple and then pay back monthly as in buy now pay later . i do not want contract . Im only 19 and cant afford to buy one right away although i can pay monthly back to apply if i was to get the iphone. Help needed here and thank use

    This is Apple's financing program in the US if you want to buy an iPhone without a carrier subsidy:
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/finance/instant_credit_page
    Whether you could qualify I can't say. And as Lawrence said, even without a contract the plans from the carriers are expensive, so you will need to consider whether you or your mother can afford the monthly ree.
    Regards.

    The GH82N  is capable of using DVD-R or DVD+R media. That said, I use only DVD+R.

  • I want to buy an app for my daughter using my account but putting the app on hers any suggestions as to how to do this?

    How can I use my appleid account to buy a gift on my daughters iPod touch that has her own appleid account?

    "1) Sign out of the iTunes Store by choosing Sign Out from the Store menu in iTunes.
    2) Visit the My Apple ID website at:
    http://appleid.apple.com
    3) If the site is not displayed in your preferred language, click the Change Language link in the upper-right corner, type the name of your language in the field that appears, then click the Save button.
    4) Click the "Manage your account" link.
    5) Type your iTunes Store account name (which is your Apple ID) in the Apple ID field, type your password in the password field, then click the Sign In button.
    6) Click "Addresses" in the column on the left. Look at your shipping addresses at the bottom. If you have multiple shipping addresses, remove any out-of-date or duplicate addresses by clicking Delete. Also, make sure the state or province field is filled out correctly for each address. To edit an address, click Edit.
    7) Now click "Phone Numbers" on the left. The area codes should be in the area code fields and the phone numbers should be in the phone number fields. If an area code is missing, or if it is in a phone number field, your account information may not save properly.
    8) Make any other necessary corrections, then click the Save Changes button.
    9) Click Log out in the upper-right corner.
    When you make your next iTunes Store purchase, you will be asked to review your billing information. At that point, you can change your information or simply click Done. After that, you should be able to purchase items."
    I had the same problem once although I wasn't in a different country.

  • I am buying an iPad for my daughter.

    Is the GB size important for downloading and watching movies?

    I've got 20movies 230 music vids on my iPad 3  64gb in standard definition high definition movies would take up a lot more space.the bigger the capacity the more u can hold.

  • How can I transfer purchased music to a new iTunes account for my daughter who now wants to make her own purchases?

    Daughter is over 18 and wants to make her own purchases. She has music I no longer need to share with her. Can I give it to her somehow?

    purchased music is tied to the iTunes store account (Apple ID) used to purchase the content and cannot be transferred.
    however, a single iTunes can be authorized for up to five Apple IDs. so, all your daughter needs to do is authorize her iTunes for your Apple ID along with her own. you can use home sharing or an external HD or burn the tunes to disc to transfer them to her computer/user account on your computer.

  • I want to clean out my macBrook pro for my daughter to use in college

    I have a macBook pro I want to clean out, would it be better to take it to the apple counter or do it myself?  If doing it myself, simple simple pls, how do I go about it?

    I assumed you didn't mean physically clean it.
    Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
    Step One - Back up your data:
           A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
           B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
              1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
              2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
              3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
                  side.
              4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
                  sure to opt for that.
                   Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
                   startup drive.
    Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
              1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
              2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
              3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
              4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
              5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
    Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
         A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
              1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
              2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
              3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
                  Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              4. Install OS X.
              5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
              6. Shutdown the computer.
         B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
             Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
                       it is three times faster than wireless.
              1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
                  Utilities window appears.
              2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
              3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
                  on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
              4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
                  and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
              6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
              7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
              8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
    *If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.
