I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up. My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive. Both drives are backed up on Time Machine. I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac. This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data. Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one. See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD. Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select. Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows. Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items. That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

If you plan on using the WD with the Mac after the iTunes transfer I would strongly recommend against WD. WD external HD's tend to be the most troublesome with Macs. If you intend to use the drive for backup using Time Machine or creating a bootable clone then I'd recommend a higher quality drive than WD. The drives I'd recommend in that case would be:
OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
LaCie d2 Quadra series
G-Tech G-DRIVE series
These are all high quality drives and enclosures with similar features. Personally I use the LaCie's however I would be happy to have OWC and G-Tech on my desk too. FWIW I've been using the LaCie's for 4 years and have 4 of them, all work perfectly and have never given me any trouble.

I have my old miniMac and all are linked up through the Airport Extreme.
I want to transfer all of my old files from my G4 miniMac to my new iMac but the Migration Assistant says I have to use (buy) a firewire cable.

sorry to say but its the firewire technique which Migration Asst. uses. It does not migrate over Ethernet.. its actually very simple...
you put your G4 into target disk mode. You put the iMac into migration asst., attach the cable and the migration (file copying) begins after you chose to proceed.
The reality is firewire is faster than most standard ethernet anyway... and wireless? it would take an extraordinary amount of time.

Start over, restoring the OS on the new machine, and follow the steps outlined in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide using the Setup Assistant.

Transferring Data from old iMac to new iMac via Firewire

I am having difficulty transferring data from my old iMac to my new iMac via firewire. Per the instructions contained in migration assistant, when I hold down the letter "T" key during startup of the "old" mac the firewire symbol does not appear. Given that the firewire symbol does not appear I am unable to proceed with the transfer. Of note, my new Mac is the '09 24" iMac and my old iMac is the early 2006 model with the 17" screen. Incidentally, I am using the following cable contained in the attached link along with the adaptor (400) with respect to my old iMac.

Not sure why that wouldn't work, but it could be that cable and adapter setup as the Early Core Duo only supports firewire 400.
You should try a 9 to 6 Pin Bilingual FireWire Cable:

There is no need to import anything or use Home Sharing.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer, everything will be exactly as it was.

Best way is to restore your backup from before the problem, rebuild it and update it again

i moved my itunes and iphoto libraries to an external hard drive to free up space on my mac.
after i had moved them and checked they could be found i trashed the originals and checked again that the could be found on the external hdd.
all seemed to be ok.
when i checked the disc utility it did not show i has made any more free space than i had before.
any help please as i am loving tje mac but i am still quite new to it.

You should also be able to access your docs (even without the Pages app on your iMac) by logging into iCloud.com and using the Pages for iCloud beta app via your browser.
(By the way your iPad uses iOS and not OS X)

i have also tried facetiming with several other people. the same thing has hapened every single time and it has always worked just fine until that 800 number called me.

Judging by all the posts on the forum, there seems to be an issue at Apple's end, although they have made no announcement on their status page. Some users have reported that Apple is aware of the issue.

Search the web or help doco about the Captivate feature called Return to Quiz. It will do what you are looking for here according to your description. There's even a Youtube video from a year or two back that shows how it works.

Do you have the OS 10.6 disk? You can run Disk Utility from that disk and format and partition the new drive.
If you don't have the disk you can buy it from Apple for $20.00

Iphoto Libraries are to large. Next step.

Weighing my options, trying to reach a final decision on what to do next.
My Iphoto libraries are 350 GB I am ready for new editing tools. I want to have an organized library and when I return to my photos I need to be productive with my time.
I have lots of slide shows to convert; cannot use Iphoto Library Manager
What do I need to manage as my image files double and triple in size each year?
IS there a Database that I should be using for photos or should I consider a web service for these photos, (helpful for storage, back ups) and then work on small libraries as projects?
Does Aperture’s library manager handle and organize these libraries well, and I can remain productive? If so it seems from my online research Aperture is easy to use and convert and begin organizing existing libraries (just need a sanity check).
If not what are other choices.
I am moving on with editing tools my choices are, Aperture, Photoshop$$, or Adobe Light Room.
Need to solve the photo organization, storage, backup and be certain the size of the library or project I am working on does not bog down the tools I choose.

First let me state that what you are considering is an apples to oranges comparison.
Both Aperture and Lightroom are DAM applications where DAM stands for Digital Asset Management. These applications provide a database for the storage of your photos.
Photoshop is not. It is a photographic editor.
Personally I find Aperture to be perfectly fine for all of my photographic needs. I have a library of about 260 GB. I experience no problems with it all.
