Most things that you need to see and change are available to Admin users. Some of the unix "guts" are in hidden files.
Most of those can be accessed by using the Finder's Go menu and entering "/private" in the where to go box. This will give you access to many files in var, tmp, and etc directories, but some will still be locked, and a few are still invisible.
If you need to, you can enablle and log in as Root User. This will give you access to everything, and by accessing things you should not be accessing while the system is running, you can quickly make it so that your Mac will not work without a System re-Install.

If you are still within your 15 day return period. Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge. (There are no realistic substitutes.)
Nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick. You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.

Did you remove Quicktime X?
On a normal install Quicktime 7 is installed in the Utilities folder and Quicktime Pro in the main Applications folder.
You will need to reinstall OS X to get Quicktime X back if you have deleted it.
I notice yor profile says 10.5.8. Quicktime X is only available on 10.6 and above.

How did the photos that you want to copy off get on the iPad ? To copy photos to your computer that were taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites then see this page - on a Mac you should be able to use iPhoto, Aperture or Image Capture
To copy photos that were originally synced from a computer you will need a third-party app on your iPad such as Simple Transfer which can copy them off via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to the iPad, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer.

Choose Home from the Finder's Go menu, click on the Desktop item, choose Get Info from the File menu, and give yourself read and write access in the Sharing & Permissions section.

Until last July, the model identifier on every Intel Mac would tell you exact minimum and maximum expansion in terms of RAM, retail operating system, and any system specific required firmware updates, video and audio expansion capabilities, and patches for Wifi available. The serial number is only of consequence if you wish to date a Mac down to the week. This can help in determining system specific disks, available warranty, and exchange/repair program eligibility. Outside of that the year and month can usually be narrowed down to a six month period with model identifier alone on all except MacPros. So my question is, is it really that relevant for your needs?

My MacBook Pro with 750GB storage refuses to startup due to a problem with logic board (unfortunately I'm in Singapore and there is no Apple store here and zero customer support). I'm trying to access some of the files from the time machine back-up using my MacBook Air with 120GB storage, but I'm unable to open the backup. I don't really want to migrate the data from the time machine to the MacBook Air as I simply don't have sufficient storage space on the MacBook Air. The iPhoto library which I'm trying to access is 200GB, which is more than the size of the MacBookAir.

When you setup the Mac, you created a Admin user account with say name X
You ran Migration Assistant and it migrated user Y from the Windows machine.
User Y has different permissions than User X.
User X can't normally access User Y's account.
So what you do is log out of User X via the Apple menu and into User Y, this way you have permission to access the files.
If you want to transfer files from User Y to User X account
Transfer files between user accounts on the same machine instructions
Finder > Go menu > Computer
A window appears with your boot drive, double click on it to open
Inside is Users folder, double click to open it
Inside is your User accounts, double click on the one you want to send files too
Double click on the Public folder drop the files into the DropBox folder,
The permissions will change and can be used in the other user account when you log into it and moved to the appropriate folders.
Applications are typically installed and kept in the Applications folder which is a global access folder all users can access to run them from, but not all users can modify unless they are a Admin user.
Windows programs won't run on a Mac, but they can be instaled into a virtual machine program that is running Windows.

For the second user, it will not allow me to access the "Data" file on Time Capsule but instead tells me "The folder “Data” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents." Are you trying to do both at once? There is an issue with TC where if you have one login user accessing the drive, another user cannot use it. You need one to log out so the other can log in. It is ok from another computer I think.. just you cannot maintain two logins from the same computer.

I am not running off a disk image and I have admin privileges... Not sure what the problem is, but it just started happening (a week or two ago) and I have never previously had a problem with these applications auto-updating. If you updated using the default install (merge) from before Tiger, you may be seeing an issue that we saw when Leopard first came out last year.
Not sure of the fix - it was not simple - but if you search back in these forums you might find something that will help. I believe it deals with the numbers assigned to accounts (501, etc).
If you open your Accounts Preferences and unlock the padlock, right-click Advanced Options and read your User ID and Group ID. Let us know what they are.
Now, in the other user admin account, do the same thing.
One of the real experts who knows much more about this than I may be able to then help.
