How fast is your download speed? If it's less than 10Mbps, it's going to take hours.
Make sure your Mac can run Mavericks >  OS X Mavericks: System Requirements

  • HT6114 I am trying to upgrade to Mavericks from 10.6.8.  When it tells me to close all applications, Safari will not close and I cannot proceed.  What to do?

I am trying to upgrade to Mavericks from 10.6.8.  It tells me to close all open applications.  However, Safari will not close and the installation cannot proceed.  Any suggestions?

Either try to force quit Safari (press Command + Option + Escape keys and then choose force quit in the pop up window), or, you can also shut down the computer. Then boot up and open the app store application to download Mavericks - you don't need Safari for it.

May I know the version of Mac computer ?

  • Since upgrading to Mavericks from Snow Leopard, I am continuously getting the spinning disk???

I am so sorry for not including my computer information, I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks. I have an I-Mac   3.2 GHZ Intel Core 13 processor,  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3---Now I am constantly getting the spinning disk when I try and do the things I used to do without problems. Is there something that can fix this? I downloaded from the Apple Store App

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).

  • Considering upgrading to Mavericks (from OS 10.8); have most of the bugs been worked out?

I'm considering upgrading to Mavericks soon (like, maybe today). The reason I haven't done it before now is because I wanted to wait for most  (if not all) of the bugs to be worked out of it. For those who have Mavericks or have just recently upgraded, how is it working out?
Also…this might be a stupid question.. but will I need to backup all my stuff before I upgrade (like…will upgrading cause me to lose anything)? Or will it all be fine?

If you don't have a backup of your hard drive you will lose your data at some time.  There are only two types of hard drives: those that have crashed and those that will.  All it takes is a power surge or other type of interruption to damage the drive or corrupt the data.
I would not even do a minor update of the system without assuring my backup is current.
The easiest backup strategy to implement is an external HD and Time Machine.

  • Tried to connect my messages from my phone to my macbook, but the accounts tab under preferences won't let me type in my Apple ID and I can't save, cancel, or exit out of the window

I just got a new MacBook Pro today. My friend explained to me how to connect my messaged from my phone to my Mac, since they weren't connected yet. I opened Messages > Preferences > Accounts. My Apple ID and account info was already there and it was enabled, but the messages still weren't syncing, so I disabled it and tried to add the account again. I went to put in my account info, but I realized there was no space to put in my Apple ID, even though it said to. I typed in my first and last name, password and country, but when I clicked "save" nothing happened. The section that asked my ID, name and password disappeared, the "save" button keeps flashing, and I can't "cancel" or exit out of the window. If I press "cancel", an alert message appears but all it says is "(null)". How can I fix this so that I can exit out of it? It won't let me shut down because of this.

It will only sync with new messages received after Mac's Messages is configured and running.
It will not synced old messages.

  • I am having trouble upgrading to Yosemite from OS X 10.7.5.  The download just freezes.

I am not able to upgrade from OS X 10.7.5 to Yosemite.  The download stays frozen.  Anything I can do?

The OS itself is free, although that doesn't mean there's no cost to upgrade. You sound like you've put in the research and have backups - I'd be inclined to clone your working 10.7 system to an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper so you can quickly recover in case 10.10 doesn't do what you need. You can't recover quickly from Time Machine.

  • Should I upgrade to Mavericks from OS X Lion (on iMac Intel late 2009)?

I've been using Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 on my iMac (late 2009) for a long time and have no complaint about it — and I wonder if I'm missing something in not upgrading to the newest OS. But will upgrading at this point create problems where currently I see none? Advice, please. Thanks.

And, here is a different view on Yosemite: I don't care for the changes in the user interface and I don't care about icloud integration; nor do I like the fact that some of my apps (iMovie, iDVD, etc) no longer work in Yosemite - I won't use the latest iMovie as it has lost many of its capabilities in editing and export quality options. So, although I am running Yosemite on my MBP, my iMac will remain with Mavericks so I can use the apps I want to use.
FWIW, you won't be able to get Mavericks unless you've purchased/downloaded it previously - Apple pulled it when they introduced Yosemite.

Can anyone offer advice on this please, trying to upgrade to mavericks from snow leopard 10.6.8, when tryin to download from app store the mavericks X icon drops into the dock and continuously says ‘waiting’, I’ve installed the installer update which is meant to make this possible for snow leopard 10.6.8. Check the App Store Purchases tab to make sure the download hasn't been paused.

  • Snow Leopard clock problem Trying to upgrade to Mavericks

I have a class set of 28 mac books that I am trying to upgrade to Mavericks from Snow Leopard.  All have the hardware to run the OS.  The problem I am having is all the computers have clocks that are incorrect by a few minutes either way, and I cannot get them to talk to the app store.  What can I do to get this problem solved? (By the way, our district network is designed and run by mac-hating PC nazis, so I am going to try this at home tonight).

Thanks.  I'm going to do that.  The intersting thing... I brought one of my student computers home and had ZERO problems upgrading here.  I have my external drive that I use for re-imaging the machines in the summer, so the plan is to load Mavericks on it at home, then add it to all of the school machines from the drive.
    Thanks for your help.
