I think word procession mode but I used a magazine template to get started and then just kept adding blank pages to finish...I have done these before without any trouble moving the pages around...so very confused.  Thanks for any assistance.

  • Help with a program book ad page

    Hello,
    I have finished creating an ad for a program book and I cannot get it to either print right or when I did get it to do right I now have a right margin going into the crease and I have my ad going over the 1/4 margins on the bottom.
    First I set up a 8.5 in by 5.5 in page size (size of program book) because I am only going to be using 1/2 of that page for my ad. I finished my design, then printed it out. My design came out landscape on the page, rather than upright portrait on the page. Obviously I think Im getting its because of the way it wants to print it.  There are not many choices given in the print options for telling it to print a certain way (at least I cant find it).
    Now, after messing with that a few times, I somehow finally got it to print at the top left of my paper (it actually doesnt matter if its at the top or bottom).  When I fold it to 8.5 in x 5.5 in and fold the book in half I can see its not set up correct.  I am not sure if its on my end or if its the printer again.  The right margin runs into the spine of my paper (or crease) and the bottom of my ad has run over the middle crease. My left margin is at least 1/2" away from the left edge of my paper. I need my ad to be 1/2 the page of a 8.5in x 5.5 in page. The ad's are sold as a full page or 1/2 page.
    My page set up is as a document.  Its set as Page Size: Letter - 1/2 (I did not set this?), width 5.5 in and height 8.5 in, orientation is Portrait. I do have a bleed, but I dont need it and ignore it.  Ive started my ad at the top Margin lines, but I made ad short of the right margin, so as to leave room near the inside crease where it would be stapled. I did not set up these margin lines and not sure how to change it. When I added my background artwork, I pulled it down till it turned PINK so that I would know where the middle of the page is. But my ad prints over this.
    I am needing this ad to be at least 1/2" away from the top, left and right margin of the page and pretty close to the 1/2 page mark, but not over.  Do i make sense?
    Now, just a little back ground. Ive designed program books in the past using Publisher.  I designed a whole program book, cover to cover and I had very little issues doing it.  Now I am using InDesign for the first time to do this and struggling a bit here.  The printing of stuff from ID is also driving me nuts. Im not liking the way ID prints and if I tell my Epson printer how to print, it doesnt work and continues to give me crappy outputs.
    Any help would be appreciated.  I need to turn this in tonight, but i cant turn in a camera ready printout if its not printing out correctly.

    You really can't control for that. If she doesn't know what she's doing, you could send her a technician with a brand new printer, and she could do it wrong.     Now, your InDesign document is half-letter size (5.5x8.5). If you subtract the amount of margin you used (in my example, I used .5" on all sides), you have the size of the image area (my example has a 4.5x7.5 image area). You can make a new InDesign document the size of your image area (4.5x7.5) and place the PDF that has the margins (like in the screenshot above) onto the page and position it so that the image area lines up with the document page borders, as you can see in this screenshot:
    You can see the blue InDesign image frame with the handles, which is the size of the half-letter PDF, and the image area contained within the document border, which is the black stroke that you normally see in InDesign. Don't worry about the magenta inner margin—that could be set to anything, and isn't in play here. In order to position the placed PDF into the new 4.5x7.5 InDesign document, when you place the PDF, check the Show Import Options box in the Place window. that will bring up a new screen after you select which image you are placing and you hit the OK button. The screen looks like this:
    In the Options section, change the Crop to from Bounding Box (Visible Layers only) (which should be the default choice) to Art, and you will see the dotted line that represents the size of the image change to include the margins.
    Now, when you place the image, just set the position proxy (which looks like this: ) to the top left corner and in the X and Y fields, enter the negative of the amount of margin you have. Since I used .5" margins, I set X and Y to -.5" each, and that aligned the image area of the larger PDF to the document borders of the smaller InDesign document. You could just eyeball it in if you want, but this way you can be a little more sure you aren't cutting off a hair of some of your image area.
    If you export that document to PDF, it will look like this:
    …which the person who will be putting this together will probably use, since it will be easier to place into something like Publisher or Word because it is smaller than a half page (an image that is larger than the document will probably be reduced in size to fit automatically—something that Word does, and maybe Publisher does that too, but I don't use Publisher so I don't know). How She positions it within the page is up to her, and not something you can control unless you are in the room with her, so it's a crapshoot. She could also use the PDF with the margins if it works better for her, but all you can do is explain to her what you are sending and what you would like.

  • URGENT !!! Book disappeared. Need help.

    Hi,
    I have been working on a book in Lightroom continuously for the past 7 days. When I say continuosly I really mean 24 / 7. I took my vacation time in order to work on this project.
    As I was working on Lightroom today on this book it simply disappeared all of sudden. I can't see it. I do have a back up of my catalog from several days ago but reverting to this back-up means that I would have do redo approximately 80% of the book and will not have the time to do that.
    What could have possibly happened ? How can a book I have been working on in the book module for the past 7+ days and that contains approximately 200 pages simply disappear ?
    I want to believe that the book is still there and that there is a way to retrieve it while returning Lightroom to the same state it was in before the book disappeared.
    How can I restore my book ? Do any of you have any idea as to what happened and how to fix it ? This is urgent and very important.

    I wanted to follow up on this thread. I have been waiting for the results of this experiment in order to post my views here. I just received the Blurb book I ordered yesterday and would like to share some of my findings as well as some questions or concerns. Since this is an older thread I will also post this as another post or thread so others can read it and provide their input in case they miss it here.
    First, after the catastrophic failure with the book I had created in Lightroom's book module (I lost a book that was nearly finished and contained approximately 220 pages) I was able to recover an early back-up done by Lightroom with the initial 60 pages of the book. I exported the pages as JPEGs following John's helpful advice and instructions. The pages were exported as JPEG's with 300 dpi and compression set to the highest level of quality.
    After that I downloaded Blurb's InDesign template for the same book size I had created in Lightroom (in my case the large landscape, 10" x 13"). I was able next to place the JPEG images on the first 60 pages of my InDesign book and then just continued from there. The JPEG images were placed on a layer of their own. Next I locked that layer so that no changes could be made by accident and created additional layers for the other elements. I continued to place my images on the subsequent pages (from page 61 forward) as well as to place additional elements such as text, image caption, page numbers and others. These elements were placed on the initial pages on layers above that containing the JPEG images exported from Lightroom. They were also placed above the image layer on the subsequent pages. When the book was finished I exported the book using the Blurb downloaded PDF export preset. The book was submitted as a PDF to book. The uploading took less time than I anticipated and, with the exception of the price (I wish it would be a bit more reasonable), everyting went very smoothly.
    The book looks great. The hardcover makes it look like a book you would expect to find at your local Barnes & Noble store - really professional. In general I am quite impressed and the following are my observations:
    1. It's not a photographic quality book.
    The book was a pictorial containing photos for the most part. The images are 'book quality' but not 'photo quality', if you know what I mean. It is not the quality you would expect from even a low cost Epson photo printer but looks like photos you would find on your typical printed book. Most of my images were either 300 dpi or higher. InDesign has a nice feature that allows you to place an image on a page and then reduce its size. As the size is reduced you can see the resolution increasing on one of its menus. The resolution should have been enough to produce high quality images but I suspect the process has to do with the printing process rather than the resolution (registration?, others?).
    2. The images appear darker.
    The images were in general darker than they appeared when the book was created. I know there are differences between both media - computer screen is emissive and paper is reflective. However, I had hoped that the printing process would take this into account, including the brightness of the paper, and make proper adjustments so that the book would look as close as possible to its screen counterpart. This is clearly not the case.
    Is there a scientific way to address this ? Is there a calculate way to increase brightness prior to submitting a book for printing that would compensate for this phenomenon ? If not, is this more art than science and one must 'guess' the loss and increase brightness at will ?
    3. The paper looks great but affects (sometimes negatively) the viewing experience.
    I chose the most expensive paper Blurb offers. It is the Proline Pearl Photo Paper and it has a very nice, soft, matte finish I like. The downside is that it is not very reflective and further compounds the 'darker' feel. In addition I think that its 'white' isn't really white due to the characteristics of the paper. It is probably more like an off-white or light gray. Again, it would be nice to know if there is a scientific way to address this. One would expect the press to utilize some kind of algorithm that takes all these variables into account, including the paper individual qualities. Is there a way to do this ?
    4. The hardcover looks really nice but I can already see fingerprints on it. The cover isn't offered with a choice of UV coating, which would be nice to protect it and make this a longer term investment. I can see this book ageing faster if care is not exercised in its handling.
    Having said all of the above I must say that my experience has, for the most part, been a positive one. The book looks quite nice. Adobe InDesign has proven to be a terrific tool for this type of job and there can definitely be good integration between Lightroom's book module (once that thing is working the way it should) and InDesign. I didn't notice any difference in quality between the images exported from Lightroom and those I manually placed in InDesign.
    I wish Blurb would offer more choices and that I few issues would be addressed:
    1. More paper choices.
    2. UV coating for cover (and also for pages).
    3. A reliable method to compensate for brightness so images on books don't appear dark.
    4. Lightroom export to InDesign document for those who wish to add, refine or edit the book in InDesign.

  • Address book entries erased - need help

    Does anyone know how to recover erased Address book entries? I've found that Contact info inside a card can be easily erased/typed over and there does not appear to be an easy way to "undo" as the Edit/Undo command doesnt seem to work in this application. The downside of using Mobile Me is that my devices are getting wiped out quicker than I can copy down the info and save it.

    Genius said I had to re-install.
    did you try what I said? i suggest you do that before reinstalling. that's quick and easy and won't hurt anything. if the problem is with your AB database file then reinstalling won't help but what I said will. and since you have time machine you should not reinstall in any case. you should just do a full system restore from TM from before the problem started.

  • First Java Programming Assignment - Grad student needs Help

    Thank-you to whomever helps me out here (I have been waiting for the Professor to respond for 2 days now, and our asignment is due by midnight 2-nite. Here is my problem. We have a value called nPer. This value is defined as a double (it needs to since, it perfoms lots of calculations). Now the assigment calls for the print line to display the field in its integer format. So I have done the following:
    nPer=Math.ceil(nPer);
    This has caused the value to be represented as 181.0. Not good enough! The value needs to be truncated and represented as 181.
    The professor has provided us with directions that use the following syntax
    (int)181.0
    Putting that exact code in my program causes JBuilder to create an error message. Ergo, its not right. I have serached all over the tutorial looking for the proper method to resolve this, however - no luck. Could some kind sole please help??? Thank-you.

In the Program Monitor I've been getting these strange black and white bars. Below is the screenshot. Can anyone help me? This is really scaring me.

    Hi folks I have searched around quite a bit but I need more specific advice based my situation...I am editing a docu about Japanese biker gangs shot on several different SD cameras:
    MY FOOTAGE
    1.Sony Vx-2000 fitted with a  Century Optics 16:9 converter lens bayonet mounted
    2.Canon Xl2 shot in 16:9 mode
    But I also have:
    ARCHIVAL/ACQUIRED FOOTAGE
    1. Contributor's camera SD 4:3 aspect ratio
    2.Contributor's camera SD 16:9 aspect ratio
    3. Transferred from VHS into SD 4:3 aspect ratio
    I would like to standardize the aspect ratio for the project but I am getting confused as sometimes the footage shot on the sony (which should be true 16:9) appears elongated vertically at times.
    Are my settings off?
    Also, I have "title safe" wireframe on in the Canvas and the images all exceed the outer box. I don't have a TV so it's hard to check what (if anything) gets
    lost. I guees most TVs can handle 16:9 without letterboxing....
    Do I have to worry about that? Which box should I crop to if I letterbox? The out or inner? Or the outside of the screen? Should I just letterbox the whole project?
    BTW eventually I am planning on Uprezing the project to HD using Magic Bullet when outputting.
    The overall question is: Who has experience dealing with multiple aspect ratios in one timeline? Can you offer any advice on a work flow to output successfully?

    Sorry to butt in, haven't read the entire thread.
    Suggest you plan from the beginning to create one timeline but encode for two separate output formats.
    Standard procedure for bringing multiple formats is to convert them to a single format as they are ingested. Decide early what the timeline format will be and transcode everything to that codec before anything is brought into the timeline.
    When your project goesgolden, export a single self-contained movie and take that to Compressor to create release movies that will be played on Blu-ray, SD  DVD, online, or in Power Point, whatever you need.

  • IPhone 4 bluetooth no longer working in my 2010 Hyundai Tucson. Need Help.

    Hi.  I have a 2010 Hyundai Tucson.  In June of this year I bought the iphone 4.  I was able to use the bluetooth / pairing in my Tucson with no problems.  It was great because I could just push the buttons on my steering wheel to talk on my phone through the car!  It worked until two or three weeks ago.  Now my Tucson will not "pair" with the phone.  My phone identifies that it is "Tucson" it is trying to link up with but won't ever do it.  Sometimes the keyboard comes up on my phone so I can type in a 4 digit password (0000) provided by my Tucson, but it disappears before I can get the password typed in and gives me a message saying I took too long, pairing failed.  I am typing REALLY fast but it is not fast enough.  I have read a few other posts and looks like their might be a problem with the latest update for the iphone 4.  What am I supposed to do now?  Is their a place I report this to Apple at?  Any suggestions appreciated.  Thanks!

    I am having the absolute exact same problem with my 2010 Hyundai Tucson.  After reading some of the other forum posts, it appears that this may be related to an iPhone update.  Have you had any luck with a solution?  I'm so frustrated.  To make matters worse, I was trying to trouble shoot the problem and narrow the issue, so I took my husband's Nokia Lumina phone to see if I could pair it....paired it within seconds.  No problem!  Ughhhhhh!  I need some suggestions.

    I am suffering the problem with some plug-ins (some others still okey) of Color Efex when I use them with Lightroom. Specifically, the image I chose to edit in Color Efex turned black as I tried to apply a plug-in, ex Detail extractor. Pls see the pic below:

    I emailed Nik team and it is just exact as what you said, they are very helpful and supportive when provide me several of solutions. Thank god one amongst them solves my issue completely. I performed the following steps:
    If you are able to open Color Efex Pro 4and can see part of the interface, see if you can click on the"Settings" button in the lower left.
    In Settings locate the section "GPU" and expand it, in this section you will see a check box "Enable GPU Processing", uncheck this so the GPU will be disabled, then close the settings window.
    Close out of Color Efex Pro 4 (click Cancel), quit out of any and all host applications (Photoshop,Lightroom, Aperture), and then relaunch Color Efex Pro 4 to see if this corrects this issue.

  • My iTunes gift cards worked but i had a glitch and need help

    I redeemed 2 iTunes gift cards and then bought a music video off of iTunes. Once i completed the download a box popped up on my screen and said,"iTunes has encountered a problem and must shut down". I tried everything I could to try to keep it from shutting down but it didnt work. So when i restarted iTunes I found that the music video and the 30$ added on to my iTunes credit was missing. So i tried entering the codes for my iTunes gift cards to see if i could get back the money on them, but they both replied,"this card has already been redeemed". I am very devastated i lost 30$ of money that my family had gaven to me. Is there any way i can get my amount of money back from iTunes?

    First, make sure you've logged back into the iTunes Music Store (the login button is at the upper-right of the main iTMS window in iTunes). If your account name isn't showing, you're not logged in.
    If you confirm that you're logged in using the correct user name and it's still not showing the correct balance, contact the iTunes Music Store customer support department through the form at the bottom of this web page and explain the problem to them.

    I almost have it all set up. It still won't make the selection though >_< The script won't open when I'm in QuickTime (via the script menu. all of the others open just fine.   • Delete row option doesn't work and then becomes greyed out. Need help troubleshooting.

    Hello!
    I'm hoping that someone can please help me troubleshoot an issue I'm having with a table in my form. It has a menu associated with each row that allows you to add, delete, reset, etc. rows. The name of the table on the form is the Purchase Items table. It's the first table on the form.
    Here are the steps to recreate the issue:
    1. Create 3 rows in the table
    2. Click the menu ("X") button associated with the first row.
    3. Select "Delete this row". Nothing happens.
    4. Click the menu ("X") button associated with the first row.
    5. Select "Delete this row" again. Nothing happens.
    6. Click the menu ("X") button associated with the first row. You'll notice that the "Delete this row" option is greyed out.
    My best guess that the rows are being deleted in the background which would explain that if I have 3 rows, and "delete" 2, that my delete option is then greyed out because I believe there is logic in there such that if there is only 1 row then grey out the option to delete rows. I was planning to attach the file as I have seen others do but don't see the option. I'm happy to provide the file via email if that's easier. Thank you in advance!

    The instance manager methods were being given the wrong index of the row to work with. They need to be passed the index for the row that the button you are pressing is in (of course). Instead they were given some v8b index, which I honestly cannot decipher as to what that number possibly means. (Math.round((v3-v4)*v6........)???
    Anyways, I fixed it up and also changed some of the logic in the sub menu to determine what's greyed out.
    I like that feature! Might even show it to a client!
