I bought a used ipod touch, unopened.  I want to enter the serial number to find out if it is stolen.  how do i do that?

So i bought a 4th gen 32gb ipod touch off of craigslist.  It had never been opened.  It still had the seals on it. I opened it, but never connected it to itunes.  I didn't use it because it dawned on me that this ipod might be stolen.  I have the serial number, so is there a way to contact apple and see if this ipod has been reported stolen?  If it has, I will turn it into the police, because i do not want to be in possession of stolen goods.
Thanks

I would suggest you to call Apple.
I am not sure if you can find such an information on line.
You can for sure check if the device was registered just going here   http://www.apple.com/it/support/contact/
This is the link in Italian. try to put us instead of it between com/ and /support to get US. and try to register it.
But I believe if it is still in its package it will probably not jet regiostered.
Try google: there is probably a page were pepople put stolen devices.
