I can't afford these things

Question

I am paralyzed from shoulders down. Therefore, I cannot work and only make a certain amount of money through Social Security. I really, really want to buy my mom a new iPad because she wants one so badly. She is on disability as well and doesn't make a lot either. Majority of our money goes to the bills in my house or movies every week to entertain me because I get bored a lot, naturally. Why are these things so expensive? Is there a way to get a new one fairly cheap? Or even layaway are some kind of payment plan option where you receive the item up front and make reasonable payments every month? Anywhere? Anyone know?

I agree...
popularity makes iPads more expensive than other devices.  I love my Playbook at nearly 1/3 the cost and it comes with dual speakers!
the iPad2 is cheaper than the iPad 3
have you considered looking at the used market?
becareful, if you have mobility issues, iPads are not good for drop tests.  The slippery aluminum skin increases the likelyhood of a slip.  Mine has a big dent after a month (hit a office chair leg on the way down).
