I can't copy a song from my PC to itunes or to my ipod

For some reason I can't seem to copy files from my PC to iTunes or to my ipod. I've trid drag and drop, add song and add folder. None seem to work. Please help!!

I have checked the "manual" add and delete box. When I check the sync box the alert box comes up and says that the system will automatically delete everything that I have on my iPod and I don't want to have to go back and reload the songs and books that I have already on the iPod. What am I doing wrong?

I figured this out; just go to the itunes folder, open it, and then move the song, or album, into that artist's folder in "my music." I thought about doing this, then I read the cautions about renaming, or moving, tracks and hesitated. It worked just fine.

I can't copy certain songs from my iTunes library to my iPhone despite repeated attempts. These are songs I copied way back when from CDs onto my computer. I can play them on my computer just fine in iTunes too. Status bar says "Updating files" and "Preparing to Copy" but nothing actually copies to my phone. My phone shows the songs greyed out and circles to the left of the song in the Store column and the songs never get copied onto my phone.
My guess is that there is something I am missing or something I am doing wrong.
Any advice/help is appreciated.

Have you not got a backup of your content ? iTunes will only copy back purchases that you made from Apple. For music from other sources you will need to find a program from another source which can copy them back from the phone - if you do a search on google you might find some. Or depending from where you got them from can you re-download them from those sites ?

I fixed this issue (with help from tech support) and it involved several things.
After adding a song to iTunes, right-click on the song in iTunes and select "Update iTunes Match."
OR go to the iTunes menu-->Store-->Update iTunes Match.
Maybe that's the reason, it just hadn't updated to the cloud.
OR maybe it's not a high-enough bitrate file. This happens to me because most of my tunes are home-recorded.
Sometimes converting to .mp3 or Create AAC version might work. (You do this with a right-click in iTunes, and then you will want to remove the original file from iTunes.)
There is an iTunes Preferences setting, under General Preferences called Import Settings. Try setting it to AAC Encoder and iTunes Plus. That (I think) causes imports to be slightly better quality.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Have you failed to do this?
If so, not good, then you may be able to purchase third party software to extract the music from your iphone. This is not supported by Apple.

I have iTunes installed in my personal computer and that's the only computer where I connect my ipod touch (5th generation) and where I have all my music. But the problem is that this personal computer doesn't have a CD drive. I was thinking about installing iTunes on another computer (that does have a CD drive) and transfering the songs from the CD here and then connect my ipod to transfer the album. But will my ipod synce in this new computer and make a security copy and delete all my previous songs (from my personal computer)? Be careful, the method you describe will indeed delete the contents of your iPod.
Instead, after you rip your CD on the other computer, copy the resulting song files to a flash drive. Then copy them from the flash drive to your main computer, and add them to your iTunes library.

Can't copy all songs from an imported CD

I have an OLD 15gb iPod. I bought a new CD and successfully imported all the songs into iTunes (V.7). I then selected all songs and dragged them to my iPod. However, only some of the songs copied. I cannot even drag some of them one-by-one to my iPod from iTunes.
I cannot figure out why I can't copy all the songs.
Any help would be appreciated.

I never laughed in all my life. Here I was, inserting the cd Dance with Me, thinking it's not going to copy the whole thing. yeah, right.
Sure, it prompted me, Do I want to replace the songs, so of course I said "no, don't replace the songs". and guess what it did. It copied the whole cd (at least I got my two songs).
I went into the itunes library, and sure enough, all the songs were there twice. So what did my intelligent brain think of? I just unchecked the doubled songs and stuck my ipod into my computer and it synched up and I got what I wanted.
Now what did I do wrong when it prompted me. I clicked on "don't replace" and it replaced them anyway.
Am I dumb? or is itunes stupid?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

I can purchase songs from iTunes, and I can connect my iPod and play the music. However, when I tried to put a purchased song from iTunes onto my iPod, I was told that I wasn't allowed. Are you sure your computer is authorized for this? This is probably your issue.
If you go to the "Advanced" tab on the top in iTunes, is there a "Deauthorize computer..." button or an "Authorize computer..." button? If there's an "authorize computer" link, then that is your issue. Authorize your computer, and you should be able to transfer iTMS purchased songs from iTunes to iPod.

My HD crashed.. Can't copy the songs from my ipod to my PC...

I was very disapointed that itune couldn't synch the files from my ipod back to my PC. The excuses from Apple is completely insignificant.
Also, I found that ITUNE is a REAL VIRUS... You just simply CAN'T uninstall it correctly from your PC. I've been going into my registry, deleted everything there, deleted every files on my PC that had anything to do with my ipod and still when I boot, the IPOD is still locked by itunes....
I've been dreaming for 3 years to get my ipod and now that I have it... I'm dreaming I should ask for a refund...

We've run into this problem as well. To satisfy the music industry, I can see why Apple can't provide the plug-ins to move files from the iPod to your (or your friend's) PC. But go to this web site and check out this program - it worked perfectly for us.
