I can't do ANYTHING on my ipod touch.

*my ipod touch (2nd gen?) won't turn on, won't show up on my computer - and i've tried 'recovery mode'. if anyone else has had the same problem and sorted it i would appreciate greatly tips / info.* here's what happened:
1. the battery ran low and device turned itself off.
2. i plugged it in to my ibook with usb cable (as usual) and got the low battery (red) screen, ok so far.
3. about an hour later i looked at it because it wasn't showing up on itunes...
and the battery indicator is still red.
4. i decide to plug it into the wall with mains adaptor...
i unplug the usb cable and the ipod screen goes white with some flickering lines.
5. i plug it in to mains adapter and wait for 20 mins, screen is still white. something is wrong so i go to the apple support page. it says press and hold the home + on/off button for 10 secs, so I do.
6. ipod turns off, screen goes completely black. i think this is ok so i leave it to charge.
7. a couple of hours later and i try to turn it on (still plugged into the mains) and nothing happens, not even the low battery screen.
I've looked around forums and have tried pretty much everything i can think of / find online, including pressing home as i'm plugging it in. it doesn't show up on my computer at all when i plug it in - even when i go to the usb connections bit on System Profiler - which usually works for my temperamental external hd.
does anybody have any advice? or maybe you are having the same problem? thank you!!!!
+(if i manage to fix it myself i will post solution here for anyone else with same prob.)+

Thank you both for replying.
I had already tried different usb ports and it didn't seem to make a difference, however I've just plugged it into the mains again now (but a different wall socket) and the battery indicator is showing! It is still red, and I'm going to keep it plugged in until it is fully charged, so as yet I don't know if my computer will see it. I have tried to switch it on again, but it won't - I'll try again when the battery has charged a bit.
I wonder if there is not enough power from my computer to charge from empty and this is the problem. Last night when I plugged it into the wall I was using an extension lead which shared the power between my iPod and bedside lamp, whereas now the only thing plugged in is the ipod. Perhaps this is an issue for you also?
