Are you sure your computer is authorized for this? This is probably your issue.
If you go to the "Advanced" tab on the top in iTunes, is there a "Deauthorize computer..." button or an "Authorize computer..." button? If there's an "authorize computer" link, then that is your issue. Authorize your computer, and you should be able to transfer iTMS purchased songs from iTunes to iPod.

The advertised number of songs an iPod can hold is based on set factors such as the encoding for each song and the length for each song.
Transferring movies is selected under the Movies tab for your iPod sync preferences with iTunes.
Transferring TV Shows is selected under the TV Shows tab for your iPod sync preferences with iTunes.
Include Music Videos is selected under the Music tab for your iPod sync preferences with iTunes.

I just recently purchased an IMac. My music was all on my hard drive on my old computer. I went to sync some new music onto my Ipod Touch and Itunes deleted all my old music off of my Ipod Touch. My new music synced fine but I lost over 500 songs! If you have your hard drive from your old computer you can transfer it...
...but anotherway I don't know, not a genius on computers hehe.

From what you describe it sounds like the phone is in recovery mode. Try connecting the phone to the wall charger that it came with, and perform a reset then connect it to iTunes again and try:
Reset
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

I just rented a movie today of itunes and it is in my rentals however this is my first time renting a movie and i tried to sync it onto my ipod touch version: 4.2.1, (I am going on holiday tomorrow and need it on my ipod before then). I go onto my syncing page and go to movies and my rentals are there and i can move them across to my ipod but underneath it says - 'You must be connected to the internet to transfer rented films' but the thing is i am connected and when i click apply it tries to sync it but then they go back to where they were.
