- The 2G and 3G iPods have different hardware. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Touch
- Apple only made the 3G iPod in 32 and 64 Gb models. the 2G came in 8, 16 and 32 GB models. When the 3G iPod was realeased, Apple continuded sell the 8 GB 2G iPod wiht updated firmware.

BEFORE YOU READ THIS! IF YOUR IPOD HAS A CAMERA IT IS A 4th GENERATION IPOD TOUCH AND IS COMPATIBLE
1st and 2nd generation ipod touch's wont run ios5
another thing to note is that 8gb 2nd generation ipod touches and 8gb 3rd generation ipod touches have the same hardware thus if you have a 3rd generation 8gb ipod touch it will also not work.
to check if your ipod touch is a second or a third generation ipod touch look on the back of your device.
if it is an 8gb ipod or a 16gb ipod it is a 2nd (or 1st) generation ipod touch and does not support IOS5
if it is a 64gb ipod it is a 3rd (or 4th) generation ipod touch and does support IOS5
if it is a 32gb ipod touch go to your settings app, then general and then about and under model check what the first two letters are.
If they are MC your ipod is a 3rd (or 4th) generation ipod touch
If they are anything else your ipod is a 2nd or first generation ipod touch
if you have  gone through these steps and your ipod is a 3rd or 4th generation ipod touch restore it to its factory settings by clicking restore in itunes
if restoring doesn't work press and hold the power and home button until the ipod reboots, then let go of the power button but still hold the home button

Hello! Not a problem, because you will get a Ipod Nano 1st generation as a replacement, not a new / latest generation.

  • Upgraded my iPod touch to iOS5. How do I get my music back?

Using my MacBook Pro, I just upgraded my iPod Touch to iOS5 and it erased all the content on my iPod. Now how do I get the content back onto the iPod?

Thanks for your help, but I found an easier way: Since I have about 3000 songs, a few videos and a few audiobooks, it would have taken me forever to move each item one by one. So instead, I just dragged the content categories from the iTunes library into the iPod content catgories and it worked like a charm. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

  • I can't upgrade my iPod touch (from version 1.1.5)

    Hello there,
Sorry for my english if it's bad.
I have a problem with my very old ipod touch (i got about 2 years ago).
Yesterday i decided that i wanted to download some games and applications to use on my Ipod touch, but after downloading one for free on the app store, i couldn't synch it on my ipod.
I was told that i needed to upgrade my iPod. It had the 1.1.4 version.
So i upgraded it, and it only upgraded it to the 1.1.5 version, which seems to be a very old version.
I do have the latest version of iTunes (version 9.2) but next to the upgrade button, my iTunes tells me that the 1.1.5 version is the latest version, and that it will search for new versions only on the 18.07.2010.
I would very much like to upgrade my ipod touch so that i can use some applications on it, but i just can't, apparently.
Thank you so much for your help, i'm pretty bad with this stuff.
ps: i have a macbook pro that i bought one year ago, so my computer isn't very old either...

iPod Touch 2nd gen 32GB Mac OS 10.6.4
Since I have upgraded to iOS4, I have run into the following problems:
1: Safari crashes on many of my previously favorite websites. They start to load and whamo a back screen and then my home screen returns.
2: Very slow to open most apps. Takes many times as long as previously.
3: Slow wifi. I'm practically sitting on top of my modem and I am getting only one little rainbow bar showing. This happens at other wifi locations too, so it's not a modem incompatibility.
I have erased all of my coockies, history and cache to little avail.
I have restored my iPod from my Mac.
I have erased and re bookmarked my sites.
I'm only using up half of the RAM so its not that.
What else can I do. I love the folders, but this isn't worth it.
    Thank you in advance.

  • How can i upgrade my ipod touch 4g to iOS 5???

can i upgrade it on my laptop or do i have to consult any apple store???

iOS 5 is not out yet, so you cannot update your iPod Touch with it.
When it does come out, you can do it from your own laptop.

  • Can i upgrade an iPod Touch 2 so I can skype?

My sister just gave me an "old" iPod Touch she had lying around - i think it's 2nd generation - only to find I can't skype on it ("This app requires iOS 4.0").
Can I upgrade to my device to iOS 4.0 at least so I can skype?

    Thanks for your quick response!
I tried this - opened iTunes on my laptop, connected the iPod and all I see is the standard suggestion to download 10.5 (for Mac and PC).
Should the prompt to update be on the computer or the iPod?
    What am I doing wrong?

  • Can I upgrade my ipod touch from ios6.1.5 to ios7 which i need to use bbc podcasts

I want to be able to download BBC podcasts.
My ipod touch has IOS6.1.5 but to access podcasts I need ios7.
Is it possible to install IO7 and how do I do it?
    Thanks for any help.
    Bob

iOS7 only runs on touch 5's, so unless you have a 5, you can't up grade to iOS 7, sorry.

  • How can I upgrade my iPod Touch 1st gen?

I've found the purchase it to iOS 3.1 software thing, but I do not understand how it works. I already have the newest iTunes, but when I click on "find updates" it says that 1.1.5 is the newest available. What do I do wrong?
Please do not add this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2052
I read it, and I'm not at all further. I know I miss something I just don't get, what? Thanks for your help!

You have to buy the update from the iTunes Store, as the article says; the update is not free, so the "Find Updates" will not show it; that's only valid for free updates. Click the link on the page that says "Purchase the iOS 3.1 Software Update directly from the iTunes Store" as instructed.
    Regards.

  • How can I sync my ipod touch my old itunes library?

I had orginially synched my itunes library on my work laptop(macbook pro). Now I have changed jobs I would like to synch my ipod touch onto my home laptop (Dell Windows). However, I have already got an itunes library on my home machine (only ten or so songs). I don't want this library anymore, I want to synch the tunes I have got on my ipod touch. I have some purchased tunes but mostly they are from my own CD collection. I also have loads of apps and photos/videos on my itouch. As well as this I need to upgrade my ipod touch to iOS 5.
So...I don't think I can transfer my tunes, apps, photos/videos from my ipod touch to my home computer's itunes library and therefore cannot upgrade my ipod touch to iOS5.
Can anybody help me find a way to transfer my ipod content onto my home laptop? All my content is purchsed from CDs, Appstore, itunes or my own photo video collection.
    Hope someone can help!
    Cheers

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music bt using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communities
    - Connct the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.
