I can't write to usb stick [solved]

I've installed arch on my notebook yesterday. It took a few hours, but I got almost everything working correctly.
My issue is that when I plug in a usb stick, it gets automatically mounted, but I can't write to it.
I had the same issue with my ntfs data partition, but I solved it by adding an entry to /etc/fstab.
Unfortunately that won't be  an efficient solution for usb sticks, since their partition type might vary.

I don't think that the storage group covers this.  All USB storage devices that I have seem to come up as being part of the disk group.  You should really not make your user part of the disk group.
If you read the post, and saw the info provided by the OP, you would see that he/she is trying to write to an iso, which is read-only.

  • Cannot Write to USB Stick

    I can copy from USB sticks but cannot write to USB stick.
    I have tried various USB sticks to ensure I wasn't using an old stick or a damaged stick but nothing works.
    I have tried formatting the sticks differently, i.e. FAT32, Mac OS Extended etc but still doesn't work.
    The files I am trying to copy are only 200KB onto an empty, newly formatted 16GB stick.
    I have checked and permissions for the stick is Read/Write.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Does nobody read OP anymore? USB had the Arch installer on it, which involves some non-standard partitioning.
    @radoslav192
    Manually re-partition your thumb drive with fdisk, etc., then format the partition.
    Edit: had to remove the log from my eye.

  • Windows 7 doesn't release USB stick - can't safely remove USB stick

    Sometimes when I'm trying to safely remove an USB stick formatted with NTFS from any Windows 7 installation, Windows 7 refuses to release the USB device.
    This occurs on host machines as well as on VM guest machines. When I'm attaching the USB stick to a virtual machine (VMware Workstation) and when this effect occurs in there I can see from Workstation's device manager that the USB stick is getting accessed
    once every (approx.) five seconds. The USB stick shortly flashes up accordingly then, so there is indeed some access to the USB stick.
    Now, this doesn't happen all the time. This effect only occurs, say once or twice a week.
    Waiting for 5 to 10 Minutes, the low-frequent regular short flashing finally stops and I can safely remove my USB stick then.
    Well, what I want to know: Which Windows service is sometimes accessing my USB stick in this manner?
    This happens on several machines, some of them having almost no software installed.
    When exploring the file handles with SysInternals Process Explorer, there's only a Windows Explorer handle attached to the USB device.
    I suspect it might either be Windows Defender (having Search Removable Devices enabled), Windows Search or Windows Defragment. But this is only a guess.
    Can anyone please enlighten me on which service is capturing my USB device for such a long time, keeping me from safely removing the USB device?

    Hi,
    We can use USB parser in WDK8 or 8.1.
    To install USB ETW parsers:
    1.Determine whether you have 32-bit Windows or 64-bit Windows: ◦Open the Start Menu.
    ◦Right click Computer and select Properties.
    ◦Look at the System type field. (Note: 32-bit corresponds to “x86” for the downloads).
    2.Install Netmon:
    ◦Go to the bottom of the Quick details on the Netmon 3.4 download page and press the Download button for your system type.
    ◦Download and run the exe. When it asks about setup type, Typical is fine.
    3.Download and install the Windows Driver Kit for Windows 8.
    4.Allow execution of PowerShell scripts:
    ◦Open the Start screen, type "powershell", right click on the Windows PowerShell result, and select Run as administrator.
    ◦Type or paste the following command:
    Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -Force
    4.Close the PowerShell window
    5.Open a PowerShell window (you don't need to Run as administrator) and run the following commands. Adjust the path if you installed the kit to a different location:
    cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.0\Tools\x86\Network Monitor Parsers\usb"
    ..\NplAutoProfile.ps1
    Now you're set up! You can now launch Netmon and open an .etl trace by selecting File -> Open -> Capture.
    You can also use OneDrive to upload the trace file in forum so that we can help you analyze your problem.

  • 1)Problems with Fusiondrive 2) Can't start from USB-Stick to repair

    I have a big problem witn my self created fusion drive on my macbook pro. For weeks it worked fine and fast. But since the last week more and more errors ocured, such like stopping com.apple.medialibrary service etc. The system ran hot and hanged sometimes or shut down suddenly..
    Now, it won't start anymore.
    Following message appears after turning on:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff7f93075b65): *This LVG was created before the fix for <rdar ://11023142>,you must recreate your LVGs"@/SourceCache/CoreStorage-380/core/btree/btree_impl .h:55
    Debugger called: <panic>
    Backtrace (CPU 0), Frame : Return Adress
    ....followed by somelines of hex-adresses and further error mesages corresponding to the LVG-Problem...
    I tried to start from my mavericks-usb-Stick, which works on my second Macbook (nearly the same settimg) fine and without problems. I pressed the "alt"-key while system start and could choose the stick as startup medium.
    But after a few seconds the same error messages appear... The system won't start.
    So I can't reformat and create a new Fusion drive. I have erased the NVRAM, which solved the problem, that the startup chime was missing...
    I tried also to start with cmd+R, but the errors stayed the same...
    Please is there anyone who can give me a hint. I need my macbook and I have only today a little time to fix it...
    Thank
    Mike

    Thank you for your answer. I have put me internal DVD in an external case to make place for the hard disk (the ssd is at the old place of the hard disc).
    I can't choose the externalDVD to start when I press "alt"-key...
    Any other idea?

  • Can't write in dashboard stickies

    Today, out of nowhere, I've been stripped of the ability to write into Dashboard Stickies. Whenever I try to do so, this appears: http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/8881/stickyq.png
    The same applies for copying into it.
    What seems to be the problem?
    Thanks for your time.

    Ok try this.
    Since you can write stickies as other users, that means there is something amiss with your home folder, as opposed to the whole system.
    In your home/library/preferences folder, see if you can find a file called com.apple.stickeies.plist
    Delete it and see if that helps
    Past that, in your home/library/ folder should be a file called StickiesDatabase
    Delete it and see if that help.
    KEEP IN MIND that deleted one or the other of these files may cause you to loose your existing stickies.... so be warned.
    If deleting one or the other of these files doesn't solve the problem, then delete them both at the same time. And of course, once deleted, make sure the trash must be emptied for this to have any effect.
    Good Luck

  • Satellite Z930 - Cannot write on USB Stick

    I have a Problem to write any file on any USB Stick on any USB port on my Satellite Z930 with Windows 8: When I try to write a file on the USB Stick the Explorer will just freeze and not react anymore.
    When reading from the same USB stick everything is fine. There is no write protection on the USB sticks (I have tried many).
    However when connecting a USB hard disk there is no Problem to write information on the hard disk.
    I hope somebody could help me to solve this mysterious Problem...

    I dont think its Windows Explorer issue since its working in connection with another devices and processes Somehow the writing on this USB flash memory needs to long and this is the reason why explorer does not responds Its difficult to say whats cause this
    Did you try to update the USB 3.0 driver?
    On the Toshiba EU driver page you will find Win 7 USB Driver 3.0
    Even if you are using Win 8, try to install this driver.

  • Can no longer write to USB stick when formatted as FAT/FAT32

    I had about 2GB worth of mixed content on an 8GB stick, which I use daily on my Mac (OS X 10.6.2) and at work (XP).
    I copied all the files off it onto a folder on my Mac so I could use it to transfer some big files to my mum's laptop (Windows 7).
    Having finished the job, I formatted the stick in OS X as FAT, but when I tried to copy my files back, I got an Error Code -36 when writing one of them. I tried formatting the stick in Windows 7 as FAT32, and got the exact same problem.
    I then formatted it as Mac OS Extended in OS X (after doing a Verify & Repair), and this time the files all copied across to it perfectly. However when I plug the stick into Windows 7 now, it doesn't show up.
    I tried formatting as FAT again in OS X, but again the files won't copy and give an Error Code -36
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Two things to try: (1) On your Mac in Disk Utility, verify that the "Partition Map Scheme" of the USB drive is set to "Master Boot Record". If it's not, repartition the drive to have that scheme. (2) Format that USB drive in Windows.

  • USB Stick [solved]

    Hi,
    I've got a problem with my Mp3 Stick, i tried to mount it with
    mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/usb -o umask=022
    it worked, but if i now try to copy musik on it, it doesnt work, i did it with MidnightCommander and it said "That chown couldn't be performed". Somewhere in dmesg i read too, that the Stick was only mounted ReadOnly, someone knows what i did wrong? Maybe i forgot to add some arguments to mount?
    Trapdoor

    With adding
    /dev/sda /mnt/usb vfat user,noauto,uid=trapdoor,gid=users,sync
    writing on the stick works, but he files are not displayed on the stick if i try to play them. I think it has something to do with the dmesg output

  • Php/mysql: can't write to mysql database [SOLVED]

    I'm writing a login script using php and mysql. I got it to work on my server about a week ago, and then I set up apache, php and mysql on my netbook so that I could take my code with me and test it. Now it doesn't work. My registration script doesn't write to the mysql database but has no errors. Here is register.php:
    <?php
    define("DB_SERVER", "localhost");
    define("DB_USER", "root");
    define("DB_PASS", "swordfish");
    define("DB_NAME", "users");
    define("TBL_USERS", "users");
    $connection = mysql_connect(DB_SERVER, DB_USER, DB_PASS) or die(mysql_error());
    mysql_select_db(DB_NAME, $connection) or die(mysql_error());
    function addUser($username, $password)
    global $connection;
    $password = md5($password);
    echo("adding $username,$password<br />");
    $q = "INSERT INTO " . TBL_USERS . " VALUES ('$username', '$password')";
    echo("query: $q<br />");
    $result = mysql_query($q, $connection);
    echo("$result<br />");
    if (isset($_POST["reg"]))
    addUser($_POST["username"], $_POST["password"]);
    echo("<a href='index.php'>click here to login</a>");
    ?>
    <html>
    <head>
    <title>Register</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <form method="Post" name="login">
    <input type="text", name="username" /> Username<br />
    <input type="text", name="password" /> Password<br />
    <input type="submit" name="reg", value="Register" />
    </form>
    </body>
    </html>
    and here is the output (without the form):
    adding lexion,6f1ed002ab5595859014ebf0951522d9
    query: INSERT INTO users VALUES ('lexion', '6f1ed002ab5595859014ebf0951522d9')
    Also, I tried manually adding the content to the database:
    $ mysql -p -u root
    Enter password:
    Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
    Your MySQL connection id is 9
    Server version 5.1.42 Source distribution
    Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the current input statement.
    mysql> users
    -> INSERT INTO users VALUES('lexion', 'foo')
    -> ^D
    -> Bye
    I would assume that I got something wrong with the last bit, but the php script seems like it should work. Does anybody know why it doesn't?
    Last edited by Lexion (2010-01-10 19:04:15)

    What is wrong with your PHP? Why do you think it is failing? An INSERT query doesn't return anything. Also, it's a good idea to specify which fields you are inserting into, unless you want to have to provide something for every field (tedious for tables with many fields with default values). eg:
    $q = "INSERT INTO `" . TBL_USERS . "`(`username`, `password`) VALUES ('$username', '$password')";
    As for your experiment with the mysql prompt; queries have to end with a semicolon. PHP is nice and hides that little detail from you.
    edit: Also, you're echoing text out before the HTML starts. That won't produce valid HTML. I also noticed a few other things which I corrected; look at my comments:
    <?php
    define("DB_SERVER", "localhost");
    define("DB_USER", "root");
    define("DB_PASS", "swordfish");
    define("DB_NAME", "users");
    define("TBL_USERS", "users");
    $connection = mysql_connect(DB_SERVER, DB_USER, DB_PASS) or die(mysql_error());
    mysql_select_db(DB_NAME, $connection) or die(mysql_error());
    function addUser($username, $password)
    global $connection;
    $password = md5($password);
    // echo("adding $username,$password<br />"); - Don't echo stuff before HTML starts.

    $cleanusername = mysql_real_escape_string($username, $connection);
    $cleanpassword = mysql_real_escape_string($password, $connection); // Obviously you'd generally use some hashing algorithm like md5 or sha1 for passwords
    $q = "INSERT INTO `" . TBL_USERS . "`(`username`, `password`) VALUES ('{$cleanusername}', '{$cleanpassword}')"; // The backticks tell MySQL not to interpret any text within as a keyword (good for field names, eg a field called `date`. The curly brackets tell PHP that the stuff within refers to a variable; it's nice as PHP knows exactly what the variable name is with no possible ambiguity.
    // echo("query: $q<br />");
    $result = mysql_query($q, $connection);
    // echo("$result<br />"); - This won't do anything; in addition to INSERT queries not returning anything, the $result variable doesn't contain the results of the query, it's a pointer to them for use with mysql_result().

  • I want to "burn" a .dmg (windows 7 file) to a bootable usb stick

    I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro and the superdrive doesn't read or write any disks (a common problem with this type of syperdrive)
    I want to install the dvd with Windows 7 on my Mac and of course i can't because of my superdrive problem.
    I have converted the dvd to a .dmg file so that I can make a bootable usb stick.
    But I can't "burn" the .dmg image to a usb. I've tried many ways to copy it but unsuccessful.
    Can someone please help me?

    Welcome to Apple Communities
    If you use Lion, you can use Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate, 32 or 64 bit. You can't upgrade to a 64 bit Windows from a 32 bit, and to downgrade (Ultimate to Home Premium)

  • Mount USB stick on an ASA 5505?

    Hello,
    I have an ASA 5505 and the built in flash is pretty small and I need to put 3 .pkg on it for Anyconnect 4.
    I formated an USB Stick (4GB) to FAT32 and put in the USB Port 2 on the back and rebooted the firewall.
    But in the filemanager I see disk0 and disk1, but disk1 does not work, doesn't list anything and I can't create folders on it.
    Can I mount the USB stick manually or something?
    Kind Regards.

    The USB port on the 5505 is not a supported file storage location.
    On the newer 5500-X series (including the 5506-X) you can do that.
