I dont belong in this forum!!

hi all. i really hate to bother, especially when everyone else on this disscussion page has complex real problems......but i am fairly novice!
I was wandering if someone could explain what i do when my newly downloaded application finishes? for example , i just downloaded "geomac" (a free appliciation for drawing geometrical shapes) but im confused as to which icons to store where etc.. there always seems to be a disk icon, dmg? and some strange white icon that looks to me like an ipod viewed from a low angle (which brings up an eject icon in my dock when i hover over it!? do i need to just insert the picture icon into my dock then restart??
I am sorry this is probably a very stupid question with a very basic answer, but i would be very thankful for some illumination on the subject

Brad,
Darren's nicely summarized the answer to your immediate question. One thing to add: it's not necessary, but many people like to save downloaded .dmg files. This saves time in case you ever need to reinstall and have a dial-up connection. Even with a broadband connection, saving .dmg files can be handy if you ever need to go back to an earlier version of a program (say you download the latest update to a program, only to discover it has a bug). You can set up a folder to hold downloaded .dmg files, and when the saved downloads folder size gets close to 660MB or so, burn the contents onto CD-R, clear the folder on your hard drive, and archive the CD-R. (See NIST CD-R Guidlines)
The only stupid questions are the ones you're afraid to ask for fear of looking stupid.
BTW, many people have sworn by David Pogue's series of books Mac OS X: The Missing Manual (with 10.3.8 as shown in your profile, you'll want the Panther edition). An earlier edition in that series got my computer-phobic in-laws comfortable enough with computers to send me most of the spam I get in my e-mail! That's either high praise or cursed condemnation; either way, you should find the book useful.

Hi, from my observation, it is UK time. However, you can set it to your local timezone when you are logged into your account. Once that is set, you will always view the forum in your local time whenever you are logged in.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
Halo 3 is at the moment avaiable/planned only for the XBox360.
If and when a Mac version will come out is unknown.
Even when a Wondows version will come out, which you can use when installing Windows on your iMac, is at present unknown.

  • How to effectively ask a question on this forum

Ok, so this'll take a little explaining. I was kinda bored over my lunch break, so i decided I'd write a general reference for how to post well on this forum. I realize that many people aren't gonna read this the first time they post, but i thought it would be a good thing to reference when replying to people who post a poor question.
_10 Ways to Post a Good Question on this Forum_
_1) Write a descriptive subject line_
This is the first thing that people see, and it influences how they read a question. Subjects like "Java error" tell people nothing about your problem. Subjects like "How to implement a SAX parser for use in multiple classes" are infinitely more useful.
_2) Don't use phrases such as URGENT or HELP ME!!! or IT'S DUE IN AN HOUR!!!!_
The people on this forum don't have the same priorities as you, and therefore don't care if your problem is urgent. In fact, they find it rude to assert that your problem should be solved before somebody else's just because you procrastinated. They also don't pleas for help too fondly. Typically posters who write this sort of phrase in their post has given up and become helpless, making it very difficult to guide them to the answer. Also, keep the caps lock off. THERE IS NOTHING MORE ANNOYING THAN ALL-CAPS POSTS. IT SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE YELLING, and people will make you aware of how it annoys them.
_3) Dont post your homework assignments asking for "teh codez"_
You will get flamed like none other for this sort of question. You may get codes, but when you submit them to your instructor, you may get suspended or expelled (depending on your school's cheating policy). The people on this forum are more advanced than you in Java, and can make it painfully obvious to your instructor that you cheated.
    _4) Write in normal English_
Think of this forum as your supervisor or instructor, you want to sound professional and convey your question effectively. SMS speak or any other sort of abbreviation of the English language becomes difficult to read, and many people on this forum won't even try. This forum is filled with professionals in the Java world, and they are accustomed to reading true English (full sentences).
    _5) Don't be helpless_
This forum is here mainly to help with specific problems, not to teach you Java. If you don't know where to start, a person is most likely going to tell you to write the solution out on paper first, breaking it down into small steps that can be accomplished by the computer.
    _6) Do your research_
Many of the questions posted can be solved with a quick Google search. You should check a few places before you even post a question. They include: this forum (do a forum search), Google (do a Google search), the API's (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/), and the Java Tutorials(http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/)
_7) Post code and errors with your question_
The answer to your problem is in the error messages and the code. Instead of asking a general question about for loops, post the code that you have written and the error info that you get. When asking a question it is IMPERATIVE that you have tried to do it your own way, because the people on the forum mostly won't do it for you, they'll only point out where you have done it wrong and try to help you fix it. Don't paraphrase your error messages, because there are subtleties in the actual messages that you may unknowingly edit out.
    _8) Don't Multi-post_
It is rude to post the same question multiple times or in multiple places in the this forum. This is for the same reason as #2, it makes it seem that you think your problem is more urgent or important than others' problems.
    _9) Don't resurrect dead threads_
If a thread is 3 years old, nobody is going to remember it, so make a new thread to ask your question. If you have a question about something in the old thread, reference it through a hyperlink.
    _10) Take it easy_
As long as the people in the forum see that you're legitimately trying to help yourself, they'll help you as much as they see fit. The biggest problem that newbies have is they rely on the forum to spoonfeed them the info, and it's not going to happen. They'll either get flamed or ignored. The people on the forum aren't trying to find "fresh meat to flame", they legitimately want to help you, and they'll typically give you fair warning if you're doing something annoying or unorthodox.

There does seem to be a way to sticky posts, but I think only mods and admins have the power to do it. There's one over on the Generics forum : http://forum.java.sun.com/forum.jspa?forumID=316
I've been trying to add a pseudo-signature to my posts as far as possible, with a link to a page which pretty much covers this stuff, only it's on JavaRanch:
People on the forum help others voluntarily, it's not their job.
    Help them help you.
Learn how to ask questions first: http://faq.javaranch.com/java/HowToAskQuestionsOnJavaRanch
But I've had a couple of occasions where the OPs thought it was directed at them and they got a tad upset :)
And without hyperlinks, I'm not quite sure how many people actually take the pains to go to that page.
Ah well, no one can say I didn't try.

  • Windows Live Mail ?   Links to this forum not working correctly.

I got a new computer running Windows 7 and have been using Windows Live Mail.
This is where I get my e-mails for updates to messages on this forum.
The link for the message thread has a link that includes the # sign with the correct message to go to on the page.
Now with Windows Live when I click the link it leaves the number after the # sign and just goes to the top of the thread instead to the exact comment.
I can copy and paste the link into a browser and it works fine but if I just click it it does not work like it used to with Outlook Express.
Any ideas if this might be fixable.
    Thanks:  GLenn

I still have outlook express running on my OLD SLOW windows XP
My new Windows 7 only has Windows Live Mail so I have to use it unless I get another program.
I just thought that someone here might have figured it out.
I dont know what the extra part after the # sign is called so i havent been luck searching google for an answer.
Here is the link to your message:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2965072#2965072
but when I click it it just puts this link in the browser:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2965072
it does work but just takes me to the top of the thread.
Im not sure why it doesnt use the part with the # and number that follows it.
It does see it and if hover over it it sees the whole link.
Just something new to figure out.
I will try a Windows Live Forum too but if anyone knows any hints that would be great too.
    Thanks:  GLenn

  • How to upload Apex-application in this forum

i want a help. i develop a apex-applicatin . by use apex-4.2. now i want to upload my app: in this forum. how to i do it? plz give me suggest.

    Moderator Action:
Your post has been moved from the Storage General Discussions forum space
(where it definitely didn't belong - this isn't a storage hardware question),
to the Application Express general discussion forum, for a guess at closer topic alignment.
... and to answer your question?
You don't upload your application to a discussion forum.
Perhaps you might get a clearer picture of what Apex is by reading previous forum threads in this space - perhaps read the last two years' worth of such posts.

  • Customize the look of this forum as per my requirement

I am a oracle dba and newbe to this forum. Here is my question.
I want to view and follow up only few categories in this forum. I have bookmarked oracle database category in this forum and it is also having few categories which i am not interested in.
So as soon as i log in, i would like to view few categories(like general question, rman, etc.) and i dont want see few categories(like sql/pl sql, streams, etc.)
Is it possible to customize the look of this forum as per my requirement?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bala

No, you can't do this with the current software used for this forum. The software will be updated in the next couple of weeks. Check We are upgrading OTN Forums!  This is the place for questions and comments. for more info. It might be possible in the future.

  • Help on using this forum

    Hi,
I was just wondering how to keep track of the "last message seen" :-)
eg: when i shut-down my pc on friday evening, and return on monday morning, there are dozens n dozens of new messages. is there any way i can set a time-stamp before exitting on friday, and then, on monday, i can see all the mew messages. right now, i try to remember it manually, but due to a different timezone, it messes things up.
    thanx n regards

    thanx all for ur replies:
the prob i face is this:
suppose i dont check this forum for a day. there are too many messages and new Threads. I m usually interested in looking at both. currently, i m adopting a very conventional and crude method. note down the time of exitting. then, when i relogin, i try to find that time. usually, it is atleast 10 pages behind. once i find that time, then i again scroll forward thru the pages, scanning messages one by one.
do any of u have a better approach ?
    thanx n regards

  • What is the Purpose of this Forum?

If it is to reduce traffic by driving people away, forcing them to log on simply to read to see if there is an answer to their question, or to see if there is a question they might be able to answer, then you guys are on the right track!
If the original idea of having people help each other is still around, forcing them to log in just to read is "dumb as a bag of hammers" (local expression).
Have seen this brain-dead stunt pulled in other forums (e.g. OCWORKBENCH) - after a few weeks, they usually figure it out.
    Sheesh.

    Who are you talking to?

One can take many opinions, and make observations but sarcastic posts like this don't belong in these forums and I wont tolerate them here, it does nothing but start problems. If you have problems with the way MSI does things then I suggest you take it somewhere else, because no one from MSI will see this. You've been told before that this is a user to user forum and you know the rules.
This thread is closed for obvious reasons.

  • HOWTO: get your questions answered on this forum

As this is primarily about formatting, I hope I've got everything right :)
Giving your posting a clear layout is helpful to the other participants in this forum, because it makes your contribution easier to read. Here are some tips for increasing the clarity of your question or reply.
    [list=1]
[*]1. PLEASE DO NOT USE ALL CAPITALS. It makes your posting harder to read. Mixed case (at least in English) has the greatest variety of letter shapes and therefore conveys the most information to a reader's eyes. Also, netiquette considers all capitals to be the equivalent of SHOUTING and is thus rude.
[*]2. Pls dont us txt abbrvtns n ur pstng. This also makes things difficult to read. Nobody will think you are less of a "d00d" if you use you instead of u.
[*]3. Please make use of the UBB formatting options. These are like HTML mark-up, but they use square brackets - []- instead of pointy ones - <>. More information can be found at the Forum FAQ http://forums.oracle.com/forums/faq.jsp?uid=1027669490365 (unfortunately, the URL for the actual formatting page is not visible to us, so I can't post it here).
[*]4. Please include all necessary information. This usually means, at minimum, the database version you are using. If you are asking about a piece of your own code that does not work, post the error code and/or message, or at least describe its behaviour. Saying "it doesn't work" doesn't give us much to go on. Posting the code is a good idea, unless it's humongous: use the UBB [ code ][ /code ] format.
[*]5. Please read the documentation before posting. Some people are offended by replies that say RTFM or STFW. You won't invite such replies if you have made reasonable efforts to find out the answer yourself before posting here. This means at least reading the Oracle manual. You should also try using the Forum search engine, although we know it is somewhat unreliable: OTN have promised to make it better soon. There is a lot of information on the web so learning to use a search engine like Google (http://www.google.com) will help you as well.
[*]6. Start a new thread for a fresh topic. Appending a new subject to an existing thread is not a good idea. If it's a long running thread only a handful of people might visit it - as everyone else has got bored - which decreases your chances of getting a reply. Also, it antagonises the people who are following that thread.
    [list]
There's further discussion of formatting postings here: The specified item was not found..
In summary, if you cannot be bothered to spend the time making you post easy and interesting to read why should other people spend their time answering it? There are no Oracle moderators on this forum, we are all volunteers.

    Caveat emptor
This advice is posted on behalf of the Rogue Moderators. It is posted with the best of intentions but is not guaranteed in any way, shape or form

    7. Don't post the same question several times. If someone can answer your question, he/she will do, asking twice or more often
    doesn't give better answers.
    8. Do not use terms like "URGENT" or "pl.answer asap".
Noone will answer faster, but many will be bored.
    9. Do not login with a name like NULL NULL.
People answering your question would like to talk to a person,
    not to a brain damage.

  • Apple support disscussions - where has this forum gone?

Developers - (if you are still there)
does anybody know where the apple support discussions is now held.  I found this forum really useful for learning about iPhone programming.
Im not sure about this new setup.
    james

I followed the instructions you directed me to, and after moving those two fles to the desktop, i go to system pref>network>assis me>assistant.
Going through that, i create a new location, than select 'I use airport to connect to the internet wirelessly'. I select the network that is ours, adn click connect. It runs for a bit, than the error message pops up saying "UNABLE TO ESTABLISH A NETWORK CONNECTION. Your computer could not connect to the internet. Click OK to go back and change your network settings and try again."
I push OK, go back try again, it does nothing. I quit, go under aurport settings, and instead of having it as automatic, i select preferred networks, and select mine as the only network under that.
I restart the computer, same problem happens. Open a web browser, says i am not connected, open my system prefs, and it reads: "AirPort is connected to the network xxxx. Aurport has a self-assigned IP Address and may not be able to connect to the internet."
I have full range on my router, the aurport is connected to the network, i just dont get an IP.
I go and renew the DHCP Lease, and it does nothing. Beside the IP Address, it reads a set of numbers which indicate its self assigned: "169.254.xxx.xxx"
To make things more confusing now, once i reset my system preferences, my roomate, who is running a mac, and couldnt connect to the internet at the same time i couldnt, could now connect. What is the next step for me to do?
Its not the router, because i have tried multiple routers. Its not the computer, because i did have a connection to this network prior to about 5 days ago, and i can still connect to the internet wirelessly at different locations. I reinstalled my os, updated it, nothing. I reset my system preferences and again nothing.
This is becoming a major problem, as i need this connection to do school work.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • I have in us app store 10$ gift but i dont buy with this 10$ "boom beach gem". Why ?

i have in us app store 10$ gift but i dont buy with this 10$ "boom beach gem". Why ?

We are fellow users here on these forums, if you would like help then you will need to provide more information that 'I don't buy with this $10' - what happens when you try to buy them, if you are getting an error message then what does it say ? How much are the gems that you are trying to buy - you need to add on your state's sales tax to the listed price, would that take it over your account's balance ?
If you are getting a message to contact iTunes Support then you can do so via this link and ask them why the message is appearing (we won't know why) : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption
    If it's a different problem ... ?

  • Question to Moderators of this Forum

    Hello Moderators,
First of all, a very LOTs of thanks, for creating such a Great Platform for the solution of an ERROR known as Community Network Forums.
Here we can discuss regarding any error, issue related to the SAP, But i am seeing that most of my Post are being neglected and thrown-away from this  Forum to the Test and Playground environment.
I am not in a Habit of posting my question to this Forum, first i try to take Help of Mr. GOOGLE, if i do not get any suggestion then i POST my questions to the Forums.
I did not got any of the Solution from Test and Playground Environment, and there are certaing issues which needs to be taken care immediately, and for that People use this Forum.
These thing are not mentioned in the Rules OF Engagement for this Forum, that the Post will be moved to Test and Playground system.
I know in SAP we have Test System, where we can test our functinality before putting it into PRODUCTION.
But here in test and playground system, i am seeing that my post are not been attended, and getting older and older.
Can anybody explain, whether my Questions are irrelevant, so that they can be neglected, OR my questions are not made for this Forum.
    Please do reply.
    Thanks and Regards,
    CB

    Hi CB,
What typically happens is that the "Report Abuse" button raises an alert for the moderators from one or more community members that some thing is not right with the thread.
We then also look at the track record of previous complaints to gage how to react.
In your specific case more effort should go into the question and I also recomment stating what you have managed to find or try yourself that does not work.
Also you have duplicate posted in the past, which does not count in your favour and contributors as well as moderators dont like that.
In the past we have rejected such posts. Now we often move them to the "Beginner's Corner" (which for the moment still has the title "Test & Playground forum" but will be changed later this year to a beginners forum for each category - I am told).
Personally I also dont like the side affect of folks rushing in to answer easy questions over and over again and neglecting the more interesting ones (a.k.a. "flooding the forum").
    Hope you understand.
Is there any specific question of yours which you feel should be moved back to the forum? I will take a second look at it if you do as well..
    Cheers,
    Julius
