Inserting blanks into a NOT NULL CHAR column

How do you insert a value of blank/spaces into a NOT NULL CHAR column. Oracle 9i interprets the space as a NULL and the insert fails because the column does not allow NULLS. Thanks in advance.

    I am trying to run a C program in which I am inserting a space character into a database table, where the column has been defined as CHAR(1) NOT NULL.
    I am initialising a variable defined in C as: char, with a blank but after running the insert statement I get an error: ORA-01400: cannot insert NULL into �. .
    create table nullTest ( col1 char(1) NOT NULL );
    Sample code:

    My options are: char_map=charz, code=ANSI_C, mode=ANSI.
    I understand that if I was using char_map = VARCHA2, on input - if the input value contains nothing but blanks Oracle treats it like a null, but I am not using VARCHAR2 option, but CHARZ.
    I tried STRING and other options and I cannot get this to work.
    Is there a way where I can insert a space character into a table (using a C program), which has a constraint of �not null� while using C type variables?

    Since you did not post a sample of the code that produces an error, its hard to speculate what might be wrong with it.
    But, the following sample works, and successfully inserts a space into the table.

    Is there anyone out there that has come across this problem I am experiencing?
    I have a form I'm trying to submit to an Access DB that has an Auto-Incremented Table Column. I have followed Stefan Cameron's instructions to a "T" on his blog page here:

    My OLEDB Connection Record Source is the SQL Query which reads: SELECT FedTaxID, LegalID FROM dbtest; My simple test DB is Access and its only 3 columns; dbID, FedTaxID, LegalID. dbID is the Auto-Incremented Column.
    If I remove the Auto column from my DB table it inserts just fine but I get this error:
    GeneralError: Operation failed.
    XFAObject.open:10:XFA:form1[0]:mysubform[0]:myEIFform[0]:overflowLeader[0]:Submit[0]:click

    First, please pay attention to the forum in which you are posting.  This particular post would be more appropriate to tsql rather than datamining.  Second, what specific problem are you trying to solve.  The code you posted appears to be
    correct.  I will say that your DataTable will likely be a source of future problems if it contains only the 2 columns.

    Here is the scenario I am trying to achieve:
    - Video clip of Grandpa talking about his childhood
    - Fade into a picture of Grandpa as a kid while audio continues
    - Fade back into the video clip of Grandpa talking
    I have the video on the Mac (2 hours - 30+ clips in iMovieHD)
    I have the photos in iPhoto
    I can insert the pictures between clips, but audio stops
    I extracted the audio from the clips and can see it as a separate track
    Using iMovieHD 6.0.3 - MacOS 10.5.5
    Can I do it with this setup?
    If not with this, what application would do this? Seems the older version of iMovie could do this.

    Yes, you can do it with iM6. You use the Paste Over at Playhead function found in the Advanced menu.
    Select/Edit/Copy your still photo. Place the playhead at the point in the video clip where you want to insert the photo. Then go to Advanced/Paste Over at Playhead. The photo will be inserted into the video clip at the playhead and the audio will play through it. If you want fade in and fade out, insert a Fade In transition at the beginning of the photo and a Fade Out at the end. Don't use Cross Dissolve because that shortens your time line and may put the audio out of sync. The Overlap transition I think will work because that one does not shorten the time line.
    Before you begin, go to your iMovie General Preferences and check the box "Extract Audio when using Paste Over at Playhead".

    Hello I need insert data in a data table component, but i need insert column by column, the number of columns it�s static per exemple 3 colums, but the numbers of rows it�s dynamic. If my data is a vector of Integers like [1,2,3,4,5,6,7] The component have to display the data like that:

    4 5 6
    7
    And in the cells have to have a checkbox componet to check de data to submit.
    Any ideas, could be posible with de data table component or another component ?�?�

  • Inserting photo into project not working right

    When I inserted a photo from iPhoto between two video clips, the thumbnail shows in the right place. But, when I scrub over it (or just PLAY it) the image is really a freeze of the last frame of the clip before it! Any editing on that clip just shows that same freeze frame - like setting duration, adjusting Ken Burns, etc.
    I have done this same procedure several times before, in other projects, with no problems.

    corresponding to an item in an underlying collection (specified in the
    dataProvider property). In order to add data to a DataGrid you
    manipulate the underlying collection, rather than the grid directly.
    Based on the limited description of your problem I would imagine you
    would need to create dynamic objects with property names that correspond
    to the dataFields of your dynamically created datagrid columns.
    So if you had created columns with dataFields "alpha", "beta" and
    "gamma" on your datagrid, you could create an item in your grid by
    adding the following object to your dataProvider:

    gridItem.alpha = "alphaValue";
    gridItem.beta = "betaValue";

  • Error when inserting in a table with an identity column

    I am new to Oracle SOA suite and ESB.
    I have been through the Oracle training and have worked for about 2 months with the tooling.
    We have a Database adabter that inserts data in 5 Tables with relations to each other.
    Each table has his own not NULL Identity column.
    When running/ testing the ESB service we get the error at the end of this post.
    From this we learned that the Database adapter inserts the value NULL in the identity column.
    We cannot find in the documentation how to get the database adabter to skip this first column and ignore it.
    Is this possible within the wizard? Our impression is no
    Is this possible somwhere else/
    And if so How can we do this?

    Click on the resources tab in the ESB system/ Project to see the ESB system design and all the components in it.
    Click on the Database adapter that you want to edit..and make the necesary changes..
    Check this link.

    If you are calling a database procedure which inturn makes the insert, you will have to make changes in the database and you job would be much simpler. It seems there are limitations on what you can change in the Database adapter once it is created. Please check the link for further details.

    This is what I've understood from your question. You want to replace @TradeIn_2_VIN value if @TradeIn_1_VIN
    is NULL, else the value of @TradeIn_1_VIN.
    If this is the requirement then, your CASE statement is missing ELSE part. You can re-write this as below

    ELSE @TradeIn_1_VIN end,
    or simply you can replace the CASE statement with the below
    COALESCE function,

    These statements show an unexpected behavior when a column is added to a table as 'BOOLEAN DEFAULT FALSE NOT NULL' and added afterward to the table's primary key column set:

    I think the error message '[350] Referential integrity violated' should not happen because the column 'b' really contains 'false'. But there obviously seem to be a difference before and after setting the column 'b' explicitly to 'false'. I can imagine that this depends on the way how the index for the primary key is updated. Probably the index is not properly updated in this context(?)

    Hi Gabriel,
    you're right, this is a bug and indeed seems to caused by the way the DEFAULT boolean is stored in the page.
    (There is no separate index for the primary key in MaxDB as all data is stored in B*trees - basically the table is the primary key).
    This is how the record looks like when column b is 'false' only due to the change of the DEFAULT value:

    Little difference but this leads to the problems during the foreign key validation.
    I'll inform the developers next week about this.
    As a workaround you'll have to explicitly update the columns for which you change the default setting.
