Just got a second iPad for the home.
Can I have multiple users's family devices backed up to the cloud e.g. 2 iPhones and 2 iPads under the same iTunes account?Yes, but it's not usually recommended to share an iCloud account within a family. If you do, any data you sync with iCloud will be merged and you, for example, will end up with each other's contacts and calendars on your devices. Also, any action taken on one device (such as adding or deleting a contact) will be replicated on the other devices. You will also all be sharing the same 5GB of free storage for all your data and device backups.
Normally it's best to use separate iCloud accounts for each person's devices. This will keep your data separated, and allow each person to have their own free 5GB of storage. You can continue to share the same iTunes ID within the family; the ID you use for iCloud does not need to be the same as the one your use for iTunes purchasing. (Each person should also use a separate ID on their devices for iMessage and FaceTime to avoid getting each other's text messages and FaceTime calls.) -
My phone was stolen. I first backe up from the icloud but then synced with my computer and lost some pictures that are backed up on the cloud. How do I get pics from my old phone which are backed up on the cloud but are not in my photostream?
If you have an iCloud backup, restore it to your phone as explained here: https://support.apple.com/kb/ph12521. If you have a backup on your computer instead, restore it to your phone by connecting your phone to your computer, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Restore from Backup.

I just downloaded iTunes on my new PC and all the music that I have purchased through ITunes that was backed up on the cloud won't play. It is telling me I must authorize this computer before it can play pre purchased music. how do I authorize my computer to play this music?
Thank you for any assistance.Tigon's already got you covered here. But I'll chime in with some English localisation advice.
There's a couple of ways to get through to the authorisation controls in the 11.0.x versions.
The control is still in the Store menu, but first (if you're using iTunes versions 11.0.x) you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the Store menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Then you'll find the control in the Store menu:
Alternatively, if you don't want to bring up the menu bar, it's still possible to get into the authorise controls via nested menus accessible from the wee boxy icon. Here's a screenshot of where to find them: -
When I completed my last software update directly on my phone I didn't realise I would then be prompted to do and I-tunes update that would wipe my phone. There seemed to be no turning back so I lost some data and photos. I'm assuming these will be backed up to the cloud but have no idea how to retrieve them.
The explanation given on the support community is a bit complicated and beyond my capabilities! I recently changed devices - my old device had 1200 photo's on it and I believe it was backed up to the cloud. My old device now has 0 photo's on it and I can't seem to restore to it. Help.
1.) Thank you.
2.) Your answer is partially correct - well mostly.
While I was waiting I tripped over an old question on the icloud community about restoring an iPhone 4 from the cloud. I could see that the bulk of my 5gb was backup and surmised that most was photos - so as the iPhone 4 question stated the phone needed to be reset and then restored from the cloud. Doing this, allows you to see the different backups that went to the cloud and dates. The concept was from the old IOS - (this is for iOS version 8.1) Tap Settings > General > Reset > all content and settings . Once done, restore from your cloud backup.
I want to back this phone up to the computer one last time with the photos sent to the cloud - and then wipe it again and set it up as a spare.
So you see, your answer was mostly correct - Wipe and restore from the cloud. The photo's are downloading as I write this and I believe I am still in the 30 window for camera roll.as well. -
grandson loaded up the iPad touch we gifted him. iTunes (he uses a PC at home) says to restore factory settings. we understand that will wipe data from iPod touch - but we did confirm his "Minecraft" app and a half-dozen others were backed up as recently as 1 pm today. If we restore to factory settings, then "restore" his iPod from the iCloud back up, can anyone confirm his "gameplay" will also be restored as of the last backup? Not a gamer, never had this concern... I know his Purchased Apps are still on iTunes, but he's panicked about losing his minecraft "score."
Yes it you restore from iCloud backup game status will also be restore provided that the app is still avaialbe form the App store.

how do i get my contacts back? they are backed up by i cloud but when I "MERGE" only the new ones are there and not the old ones
Hi sfuentes,
You need to check iCloud to see if they are actually there. Go to iCloud.com and sign in and then look at your Contacts there to see if the old ones are still showing on iCloud.
If they are not, then you can either re-enter them while you are on iCloud.com, or you can restore your device from the backup where you saved them:

Hi. I just got the iPhone 6, plugged into itunes and made the mistake of putting an OLD back up on my new phone resulting in losing all contacts after 2013. They are not saved on the cloud. Is there any way to go back to before I screwed up?
If you have performed a sync with the device since you restored this old backup, then don't bother looking for another backup. iTunes writes over the last backup each time you sync. If you were handling contacts in iCloud, you would find them by logging into iCloud. Or you can check settings and iCloud and see if the button it on for Contacts. Otherwise it might have been on the computer, if you had a program that syncs with iTunes and handles contacts, depending on the computer system you use. If Windows, it would be Windows Contacts or Outlook. If a Mac, there is a Mac Address book as well.

I have merged my iPhoto and Photo app. I have over 19,000 pics on my Mac but only 4,000 are showing up in the cloud. I added some pictures yesterday to my Mac that I had taken, but they do not show up on any of my other devices. What is wrong?

Were you perhaps using a mix of "managed" photos (copied into your iPhoto library) and "referenced" photos (kept only external to your library)? Only "managed" are eligible to be in iClout Photo Library.

Did you add them to your iPhoto library (using iPhoto) or your Photos library (using the new Photos application)? If with the Photos app, did you have the "Copy items to the Photos library" option checked in Photos > Preferences > General? -
The last 2 songs I purchased, Treasure and Take Back the Night, are not downloading from the cloud on my iPhone 4 or my iPad2. I have tried previous suggestions on the support page. Can anyone suggest further solutions?
Hello BwarsIG88
Check your purchase history by going to the iTunes Store and then click on purchases. From there you can see all your purchase history and download what you are missing.
Downloading past purchases from the iTunes Store, App Store, and iBooks Store

Dear experts, I am quite a newbie when it comes to understanding the Mac filing system, as I originally came from the PC world. There's lots of things I dont understand in the iMac file viewer and how to organise and backup my photos is an important issue for me.
I know that if I want to look at the original photo files on my iMac, I can right-click on users/myname/pictures and select "Show Package Contents".
Question 1 - What are all these folders for?
Please can someone explain what is the difference between all the folders I see? Some of them seem to be exact duplicates of the others e.g. Masters, Modified and Originals all seem to have the same content. So here is a list of folders that I see. What is in them?, or what is their purpose?
Data
Data.noindex
Modified
Originals
Apple TV Photo Cache
Attachments
Auto Import
Backup
Caches
Contents
Database
iLifeShared
iPod Photo Cache
Masters
Previews
ProjectCache
Thumbnails
Question 2 - Which photo folder should I back-up?
If I want to keep a physical backup of my photos, which of the above folders should I copy to an external hard drive? (I use Get Backup to automatically copy all important new or changed files to an external drive)
Question 3 - Using the cloud: What is the best way to backup my large photo library in the cloud safely?
I would like to have some kind of safe backup in the cloud for my photos. However the size of the iphoto library is huge at 165GB. Even the Masters folder is huge. It is 130GB. Is it possible to back up files of this size in the cloud? I have a couple of services called photo streaming and Dropbox, but they don't seem to be able to handle this kind of size. Photo streaming only works with 1000 photos (as far as I can tell), and my Dropbox probably has a limit too. I guess it's about 5GB. I am already using about 3GB of my Dropbox space for other files. I would consider both paid and free solutions.
Many thanks to all the experts for your help!know that if I want to look at the original photo files on my iMac, I can right-click on users/myname/pictures and select "Show Package Contents".
Don't do that. That's like opening the hood of your car and trying to figure out what all the different bits and peices are and which you can yank out and dispose of. Simply, there are no user-serviceable parts in here.
So, your Question 2:
You back up the iPhoto Library as a single unit.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
Your question 3:
There is no good back up to the Cloud. There are a couple of reasons for this. One is that the datasets are so large and the cloud services shapre their download speeds. This means restoring can take days to complete. Then, and this is the big problem, the iPhoto Library needs to sit on a disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Bluntly, no servers online are formatted appropriately, and if the Library is written to - by an incremental back up, for instance - there is a very high likelihood that the library will be corrupted.
Your Question 1:
The Library you're describing there sounds like one that has been updated a few times. Not everything you list there is a folder. Some will be aliases.
The Data folders hold thumbnails.
The Masters and Originals folders hold the files as imported from the camera
The Previews hold the versions of the edited photos that are accessed via the Sharing mechanism.
I think if you look losely that you'll notice that one of the Data folders and one of either the Masters or the Originals folders is actually an alias.
Everything else is a database or cache file of some form. All are required for iPhoto to work.

Is it possible to keep contacts on my iphone that are not included in the cloud?
I am using icloud to sync company contacts between all users. Is it possible for someone to keep their contacts on their Iphone and still use the cloud without losing their personal contacts or syncing them into the cloud?
In other words, we are using the cloud company wide for the contacts information - which is stored on a Maverick computer. The owner would like to sync her Iphone with the cloud, but not lose her personal contacts on her phone. Meanwhile, she does not want her personal contacts synced with the cloud.
How can I accomplish this task?Have her create a second ("secondary") iCloud account on your phone by going to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Add Account>iCloud, entering her Apple ID (a different one than is being used for the company iCloud account), the turn on contacts syncing with this account. After doing this she can then sign into the company iCloud account in Settings>iCloud and turn on contacts syncing there as well. Both contact lists will appear on her phone but her personal contacts will only sync with the secondary account which only she will have access to. She can easily filter her view to see only the company or personal contacts by opening the contacts app on her phone, tapping Groups, then tap each of the accounts until only the one she wants to view is checked, then tap Done.
If she would rather not use iCloud at all for her personal contacts, have her set up a Gmail account on her phone (Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Add Account>Gmail) and sync her personal contacts with Gmail instead. -
